478 Most High Exalted Candle Lady and the Rusty Anchor
Jun 30, 2024
Pumpkin is in the lounge with Sunshine and it’s Summer. That means blendy drinks! Our version of Missionaries Downfall stays pretty close to the classic, but switches out honey with agave syrup to make it vegan, and adds a bit more rum to punch it up a bit. Pumpkin sucked down two of these quickly in the first half of the show. This drink alone is reason enough to plant some mint in the Spring and Summer. You will gladly use it all.
Sunshine and Pumpkin discuss candle tips part 2, why mojitos aren’t so great, the demise of The Mirage Las Vegas, Rhumbar says good bye, Aloha to the volcano, and other shenanigans.
We don’t just promote them, we wear them. so soft and tikitastic
477 It Doesn't Feel Natural For Pumpkin, Cranking Their Knobs
Jun 23, 2024
On this episode we are drinking The Diane. Click on this AI generated image to get the recipe and the story. It’s a perfect summer libation with actual “nutrition”.
476 Tiki Chance on Me and Inappropriate Conversations with a peek at 9 North Rum
Apr 10, 2024
Here in the lounge we talk about our favorite event on half of our podcasts. Well, its sold out as usual, BUT, you may still be able to attend. Are you a female between 37 and 50 years of age? Can you be at the event? Would like a wristband with one small harmless catch? Listen to this episode to find out how. We promise, no stranger danger. It’ll be fun and you get to be on the podcast.
If you are attending Tiki Caliente 15, you won’t want to miss our annual room party. This year for the first time we will be the kick off party on Thursday night. Tiki Chance On Me smashes ABBA and Tiki together in ways we aren’t even sure how to explain. As always the drinks and music will be just what you need to start a wonderful TC weekend.
Tiki Mirage, the moving tiki bar in the back of a truck. Starshine and the Surfing Samurai booked seats in Tiki Mirage and give a review of the bar in a truck. The decor, aroma and drinks were all highly recommended by both of them. Listen for their full review and more details.
We hope to have some new rum friends here at ZTL. Sunshine is speaking with the team at 9 North Rum and hope to be sharing them with you at Tiki Caliente this May. Take a look at their info and follow the instagram page for all the details. 9 North offers an aged silver, dark spiced and an aged. We just got some bottles of the silver and spiced. The Blanca is a lovely sweet and auricle aroma with some nice fruit flavors and lightly sweet feel. The Especiado or spiced is not your usual holiday spiced rum. (I said that, not like mine at all) This spiced option is very smooth, a little overproof and a complex blend of not your mothers spiced rum. Its unique, floral and citrusy, maybe some chocolate…there’s a lot going on there. Listen to episode 476 for some tasting notes and a first ZTL cocktail made with 9 north rum.
Soft! Tiki! Cleans up Mai Tai spills! You need tiki bar T-shirt club shirts. A new one each month. We wear them and swear by them. Click the image!
475 To Be Or Not To Be
Apr 02, 2024
Below you see all 4 ZTL podcast hosts enjoying a libation at the Reef Palm Springs. We haven’t been this happy in a few months now. 16 years hosting together and we have run into some challenges that normally would have never come between us. Listen if you like.
Parting is such sweet sorrow.
474 Wrangling Cats, Dry January?, New Music: Mr. Moai and the Tiki Heads
Mar 03, 2024
We always start with a beverage. Usually a spirited drink, but Starshine ask for a mocktail and we know better than upsetting her. The Insurrection was crafted just for dry January at Starshines request.
This is one of our rare episodes with all four hosts present. Sunshine is doing his best to wrangle the cats and still share some tiki news and updates on new bars and events. The ladies were actually on their “better” behavior.
Conversation includes:
Dry January, soap making, a visit to the Lost Inferno, things you do only when in college, Pumpkins tips for staying youthful and thoughts about a tiki bar train tour in Southern California.
On this episode we are happy to share the latest from Mr. Moai & The Tikiheads, listen at the end of the podcast. From their recent press release: The band has consistently delivered feel-good music that captures the essence of island life, and "Rongo Rongo" is no exception. Mark your calendars for January 18, 2024, as the band invites you to kick off the new year with the infectious rhythms and sunny melodies of their latest single. Kane Manakoora, also known as Jeremy DeHart, is a distinguished artist associated with The Manakooras (Hi-Tide Recordings), The Lords Of Atlantis (Tabu Recordings), and Charlotte, NC’s own Aqualads. With a stellar reputation in the music industry, Kane Manakoora brings his unparalleled talent on the steel guitar to collaborate with Mr. Moai & The Tikiheads on "Rongo Rongo," promising a sonic experience that transcends boundaries.
We recommend their newest release Rongo Rongo feat. Kane Manakoora as well as their most recent album Surfotica. Use the link to download all of the tracks, just $8! What do we like most about Mr. Moai? Chill surf that feels good.
473 Who Says Aloha? We May Never Know
Dec 09, 2023
During the recording of this, our 473rd episode, Pumpkin acted like she didn’t know how we start the show. There is a way of doing things. We may not be very professional but we do have some “best practices”. After clearing up who says Aloha first we get right to the cocktail, our listener mail and some party planning and hosting tips. Thats pretty much the show. We stuck to the basics. Listen, drink, enjoy!
Below are two of our time tested holiday cocktails. Every tiki bar has a few festive rum concoctions to keep us all merry and bright. Start with Xmas Helper to get everyone in the mood for wrapping presents and putting up the lights. Then put out Dirty Christmas Punch , one of our ZTL favorites during the holidays. Our record is 5 punchbowls at one event. Can you do more?
472 Are Tomatoes Tiki? And The Missionaries Downfall
Oct 14, 2023
Starshine and Kalani and Pumpkin, Oh my! All the ladies are in the lounge for one of our rare all host podcasts. If you hear meowing cats its because Sunshine couldn’t edit out all the cross talk. Sorry. Sunshine and the ladies have some catching up to do including: Summer tomato tastings from our gardens (it turns dirty say you may assume), what scent is your tiki bar (it also turns dirty), and what event was I ate when I was found passed out in a stairwell. Classic.
We are drinking a lovely Summer Missionaries Downfall. This classic tiki drink from Don the Beachcomber in the 1940’s. Our version simply adds more booze. Specifically more rum and a little more mint. Click HERE for our recipe!
Below you will see clip from the hit toy of this years potty training crowd. Although I Gotta Go Flamingo isn’t new, it might as well be for these inebriated podcast hosts. Pumpkin came up with more synonyms for poop than you might imagine. If you have a potty trainer in your family you need Gotta Go Flamingo.
Listener Bonus! Count how many scents the ladies describe in this episode. Send your answer to mail@zentikilounge.com and give us your answer. First person who is correct gets a pair of our signature rocks glasses. Or just buy them by clicking here…
Have you heard of the Mrs. Roper Romp? We have! But what we didn’t know is that this awesome fun has been growing each year. If you live in the Mecca of San Diego you must join next year. Not in SD? Try staring a romp of your own. Or, just get your pals together in caftans and big wigs and hit the local tiki bar. Mrs. Roper is a true legend of TV.
Its been a few months since the horrible fire the ravaged Maui and burned Lahaina to the ground. The island is special to all of us, but most of all it is home to thousands who have lost their home, their belongings and even their lives. You can’t make lite of something that has had such a huge impact on so many and our tiki community. There are may organizations you can donate to that make sure your contribution really helps people and doesn’t get trapped in charity red tape. While we don’t recommend a specific charity, we do recommend that you use Charity Navigator.org to see how well your money will be put to use before you donate. Please help however you can.
471 Cruising To The Shameful Tiki With Kalani
Aug 06, 2023
Sunshine and Kalani in the Zen Tiki Lounge for this episode. Sunshine surprised Kalani with one of her all time favorite drinks. Marooned! We first came across this drink in 2009 while visiting the Florida Keys. Then, we served it as one of two cocktails at Tiki Oasis 2010. Now, we are finally posting the recipe.
Both hosts were back from vacations. Kalani spent 17 days in Hawaii doing a little island hopping while Sunshine was on an Alaskan cruise. Most of the conversations centers on our very different summer trips. Listen to the show to hear our vacay stories, mix yourself a marooned and don’t miss the links below for destination recommendations.
Sunshine shares his recent vacation visit to The Shameful Tiki Room while on an Alaskan cruise. If you are in Vancouver BC we recommend a visit to this small but might tiki bar. The drink menu is extensive with classics and new. And, food!
Also while cruising Alaska, Sunshine visited Port Chilkoot Distillery. To his surprise, Sunshine tasted 8 spirits distilled in Haines Alaska. Rum, Vodka, Gin, Bourbon, Absinthe and more. Both the tasting room and the spirits were all good. The distillery has a small list of cocktails that offer a twist on some classics like Mai Tai and Mojitos.
470 Bamboo Club With Dustin Rodriquez, Bamboo Ben and Marty Lush
Jul 31, 2023
Aloha, welcome to our LIVE recording at the Bamboo Club in Long Beach. The ZTL crew was looking forward to this podcast for many weeks and when it finally happened, we were ready to drink! That said, below are some of our favorite drinks from the Bamboo Club. From left to right: Zombie, Fog Cutter, Daiquiris, and the Mai Tai. Every drink we sipped was presented perfectly despite the bar not actually opening for a few hours. The Zombie was Sunshines first drink of the day at 9am and was perfectly balanced with the Zombie kick we expect from a drink named after the undead. We cannot recommend enough that you drink your way through the menu at Bamboo Club at your soonest convenience and don’t forget to bring a DD or get a LYFT.
On this episode we met up with Bamboo Ben, his son Blake, Dustin Rodriguez and Marty Lush. We couldn’t ask for a better group of people to discuss the creation of the Bamboo Club from concept to reality and what it feels like just a few years later. Can you believe that Marty and never been here before? He doesn’t get out much ;)
Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani sat down with Dustin Rodriguez who manages the Bamboo Club as well as directs their drink program. Our first time meeting Dustin we noticed he takes a lot of pride talking about the bar and all it has to offer. Dustin has been around since day one and even for the creating of Long Beach’s premiere dimly lit libation sanctuary.
During our conversation we learned that Dustin along with Bamboo Ben and the proprietors of The Bamboo Club worked hand in hand to create an authentic looking and feeling tropical escape. You do smell the thatch when you walk in. Your eyes need time to adjust to the dark and cool venue. You will likely notice hints of citrus juice and sweet aromas when you step up to the bar. Dustin shared that every drink is made by hand without batching ahead. Its hard to hand mix in a busy bar but they make it happen at The Bamboo Club. In addition to the excellent drinks, there is a full menu of tiki/polynesian style food that helps guard your blood alcohol from sneaking up on you.
The Bamboo Club also hosts events every weekend and has live entertainment almost 365 days a year. Dustin let us know they are testing a drag brunch and the ZTL crew is hoping that it really takes off so we can make that a regular weekend stop for us.
There is so much more to hear from our interview with Dustin. Listen to the full podcast to get all the insights, some laughs and inebriated banter.
Sunshine was a bit of a fan boy interviewing Bamboo Ben and his Blake. Following both of these guys on social is a trip into the creation of tiki bars across the country. You really never know where they will pop up with their nail guns and blow torches. We just didn’t have enough time to interview a true Grand Poobah of tiki so we may have more Bamboo Ben coming at you in the future.
Where and when can you see Ben and his works for sale? Don’t miss the Hardcore Tiki Marketplace the first Saturday of each month and the Bamboo Club.
We asked Ben and Son which of their most recent projects we should visit first. Two spots were recommended and are perfect for those of us who live in Southern California. STOWAWAY Tiki Bar in Tustin, CA was just completely redone by Ben and is now a true tiki destination. Kapu Bar in Petaluma is just north fo the Bay Area and worth a visit. Both locations serve great tiki drinks and food. ZTL gives an extra thumbs up to any tiki bar that graces us with Polynesian style tidbits and larger meals.
What does Bamboo Ben drink after a long day of building tiki bars? Coconut water and Hawaiian vodka. Lime is optional. We tried it, not bad at all. And, low calorie.
Oh Marty! How much fun did we have getting together at The Bamboo Club? It would be hard to believe that any ZTL fans don’t already listen to another great podcast by Marty Lush, aka Mark Riddle. Marty was also at the bar with us and we really couldn’t be in better company. If you aren’t listening to the Quiet Village podcast were absolutely demand that you do so right now!
Not just a podcaster, Marty is a musician who has been entertaining people since before Sunshine graduated high school. ;) Most recently Marty (Mark Riddle) released his first solo exotica album, Lahaina Sunset. The album is available on vinyl and digital formats and you can grab a copy on his sit. Digitiki.com On the two previous episodes of ZTL we played several tracks from the new album and have been spinning it in the Zen Tiki Lounge for weeks. Lahaina Sunset sets the perfect mood for pool time, cocktails in dimly lit tiki bars and just about anywhere you want to escape the world.
Below are just some of the pics we got while visiting The Bamboo Club with so many great people.
468 LIVE @ Tiki Caliente With Rory Snyder & Mark Riddle
May 26, 2023
This episode of ZTL recorded at Le Fern during Tiki Caliente 14. Le Fern is a 70’s fern bar with throwback cocktails and appetizers to match. The only thing they don’t offer is fondue…(that’s a hint Rory). We give you just a taste of all the fun you can have over a four day weekend filled with live music, over a dozen parties and lots of great food and cocktails. Special guests this time are Rory Snyder, host and creator of Tiki Caliente. Each year Rory pulls off an even more spectacular weekend that pictures don’t do justice. All of us at ZTL are tipsy with joy being partners with this event for over a decade.
We also have a very special interview with Mark Riddle, aka Marty Lush. Marty has just released his first solo exotica album, Lahaina Sunset. It was a pleasure sitting with Marty and talking about his inspiration for this LP and how it was composed. There is no nicer guy in all of the tiki community. Marty will do almost anything to help keep the party going.
Below from left to right: Marty Lush, Sunshine Tiki and Rory Snyder behind the mics in Le Fern.
In order below: Marty Lush shows off his new album, Lahaina Sunset. The Lahaina Sunset cover is reminiscent of exotica albums during the hey day of Martin Denny, Les Baxter and Arthur Lyman. Get the album in a bamboo case for digital consumption with extra tracks you will not find on the album. Marty and Sunshine pose for a pic after getting the album autographed. And a HUGE Mahalo to Marty for putting together a soundtrack for our room party “The Disenchanted Tiki Room.” It was a few years ago that Marty suggested the theme and we finally partnered together to pull it off.
We love tiki bar tshirt club and so should you. every month a new T with a different tiki bar design. click the pic and visit the site. buy just the one you want or get a montly subscription.
467 Fight!? What Fight? Aloooooooha
Apr 16, 2023
April 1st is just another day. Though, there is one tradition we had never participated in. Practical jokes are always fun for someone but not always everyone. Well, we went for it with mostly positive “ha ha” results. On our previous episode the hosts of ZTL created a not so elaborate scheme to convince people that we had broken up due to a little tiki back stabbing. But not to worry, all is good with the four of us and this podcast is proof.
What if there was a tiki centric football podcast? Would you listen?
If Starshine and Kalani could no longer be in the same room together, would ZTL still go on?
Does Pumpkin really care at all?
Those are some of the things we explore on this reunion episode. In addition to some Mai Tai’s and listener mail. We hope you enjoy having all four hosts back together
464 Pipi Longstocking Takes Over Kalani's Mind
Mar 04, 2023
Kalani and Sunshine are in the lounge with several cocktails and some packet drinks to review. You may notice we decided this episode back before Valentine’s Day. Well, we meant to get it posted sooner but that just didn’t happen. You were sure to enjoy our comments about the noble mix packet drinks, they were surprisingly good. We have a review on a new cocktail that uses strawberry sorbet and mount gay rum. Some updates on local, Tiki events and East Coast Tiki events. Sorry to say that most of these events sold out so quickly that nothing is available at this time. We recommend signing up for the email lists of any events that are sold out, they often release additional tickets later.
Ohana tickets sold out in mere hours. But you can click the pic to put your name on the waitlist. If you are in the NY area in June this is a great weekend with all the tiki Ohana.
We love Tiki Bar T Shirt Club. Click the picture below to get the T-shirt you want or subscribe and get one every month.
463 Making Tiki Babies With Sweet Sweet Exotica
Jan 23, 2023
Aloooooooooha! and welcome to the Zen Tiki Lounge. The bar is full this time. Sunshine, Kalani, Neighbor Julio and Neighbor Nicole are on board for a new cocktail, some shots and a new rum to taste. 459 Casino Time With Pumpkin And A New Tiki Slot Machine
Aug 13, 2022
Sunshine and Pumpkin hit the road and spend a night at the local casino. Lucky for them, Harrahs Southern California has a great craft called bar, Spiked. When two long time friends enjoy gambling, drinking and shenanigans its easy to have a good time.
Using just iPhones, recordings of the fun were put together and interspersed with great lounge music from the bands we have played previously on this podcast. Hear some of our favorites from Martini Kings, Nutty, Jill Martini and the Shrunken Heads and Marty Lush of DigiTiki.com and the Quiet Village Podcast.
Pumpkin gives the new tiki slot machine a try, gets a bonus.
There are so many “tiki” themed slot machines out there. Most of them are terrible. This one from Aruze gaming is actually pretty fun. The standard slot spins or OK, and don’t pay very well. This game is all about hitting one of the several bonuses or random payouts. When all 6 tiki flames are burning, you can trigger the wheel on any spin regardless of the symbols you hit on the reels. This bonus wheel gives you the opportunity to hit the GRAND jackpot that can be as mush as $20,000. Watch the video of Pumpkin playing and be sure to try this one if you see it at your local casino. We will be playing this one again.
We love Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club and so should you. Get a new shirt each month. Soft cotton in both mens and women styles. Each month is a new logo from one of the many extinct tiki bars, restaurants, or palaces around the USA.
458 We Have Been Probed And They Came Back For The Tiki Bars
Jul 23, 2022
Don’t worry. Beings from other worlds have visited us and many of us have been probed without knowing, What you don’t know, can’t hurt? Or did it? Let’s drink!
New to the ZTL podcast is Ricky! He joins us for a wonderful conversation about sci fi, tiki events, adult shenanigans and lifes essential questions. Are tiki bars a universal phenononem? We think so.
What are you drinking? Sunshines version of a 1944 Mai Tai. You will enjoy a Mai Tai with Sunshine added. Listen for the recipe.
Other tidbits on this episode: Drag Queens, Star Trek is awesome, How do you want to die?, and so much more.
As of this post, there are just a few rooms left at the main hotel. Book and be one of us,. Or, grab a wristband and stay where you like.
So soft and comfy. You need a Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club shirt on your back. We LOVE them and you will too.
457 It's A Clip Show With Sunshine, Pumpkin, Starshine And Friends
Jun 17, 2022
Sunshine uncovered a dozen or so audio clips in his iPhone. Put then together while drinking a Mai Tai and this episode is what you get. Hope you enjoy.
Our friends at Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club have just the soft cotton T for you. New design every month with a different classic tiki bar. We love Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club!
456 Rory Snyder, Le Fern Grand Opening, Bryan Azorsky of Tiki Bar T-shirt Club
May 25, 2022
Please forgive the audio quality on this episode. It was a party after all. Tiki Caliente 13 finally arrived and is now in the rear view mirror. The crew from ZTL was in attendance (except for the reclusive Pumpkin) and we enjoyed every minute of the four day weekend.
On day 1 we pulled Rory Snyder up to the mic while experiencing the grand opening of Le Fern. Rory shared some of the backstory on opening his newest bar location at the world famous Caliente Tropics. Over the course of the interview you can hear the patrons of Le Fern having a great time ordering the daily sloshy and classic 70’s cocktails. Rory also shares some background on Sanchos’ the New Mexican joint on property, plus why we will NEVER see the old Cellar location reopened.
Listen to the first 30 minutes of this episode to hear Sunshine, Rory and Starshine shoot the breeze and take jabs at each other all in good fun.
Also on this episode we sit down with Bryan Azorsky of Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Its been almost 7 years since we first starting talking about the great shirts from the club and now we finally get to meet Bryan in person. The interview includes some nice info about Bryan’s past endeavors and the making of Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club as we know it now. Bryan has an interesting past working in many capacities and interest, Sunshine was all ears for the story behind this cool Guy. BTW, have you ever wanted to know how you can find a club shirt that you didn’t catch the first time? Listen to this interview for details plus some cool driving stories.
Over the years we have come to the conclusion that talking to you about the various room parties during the tiki weekend events isn’t the best approach. The picture below give you a small taste of what you can expect when hopping from hotel room to hotel room over the weekend. Themes this year were varied and quite fun. One moment you are having your tiki trinkets appraised and the next you might be watching a belly dancer while sipping a strong cocktail. Every team that opens their door for the room crawl is appreciated for their hospitality and effort.
Sancho’s is now OPEN at the Caliente Tropics. Currently the restaurant is serving breakfast/brunch and lunch but will offer dinner in the future. The current menu offers something for everyone, meat eater or not. The plates are large and priced reasonably. The house margarita is a great place to start your adventure. Starshine says DON”T MISS the Michelada. We must say that in typical Mexican restaurant fashion we were seated quickly and food arrived fast. Great service.
Whats a Fern Bar? Great question. Our interview with Rory Snyder will help explain that in his own words without us adding our own commentary. Le Fern is a good size location with a very nice ambiance created by lots of dark woods and ambient lighting. You can really get out of the sun and heat of Palm Springs when visiting Le Fern. The bar offers a daily “sloshy” drink and each one we dried was worth the tasting. This is just one of three food and beverage locations at the Caliente Tropics also including The Reef and Sancho’s Restaurant. Try them all.
455 CharPooterie And Seasonal Cocktails
Mar 05, 2022
We LOVE Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Listen to this episode to find out how you can snag a shirt, or better yet click the pic and follow to their store.
454 Could Anita Mai Tai Be The Next Drag Superstar?
Feb 06, 2022
Neighbor Nicole joins us in the Zen Tiki Lounge for her third visit. Since she liked one of our previous cocktails so much we are again pouring Moog Over Rita. This take on a Rita is both sweet and savory with passion fruit and Chile vodka. Click the link above for the recipe and try this one for your self.
Nicole is joining Sunshine to talk about a project that is a long time in the making. Anita Mai Tai will someday be Sunshines official drag persona. Anitas look is being worked on and Nicole is leading the effort to design a wig and makeup routine that will give Anita a signature look. Sunshine will bring the personality, of course. Follow Anita Mai Tai on Instagram to see the progress…its going to be slow BTW.
Mentioned on this episode is the Elevated Craft cocktail shaker. This shaker is awesome for a few reasons but here are our favorites. Keeps your drink cold for hours once sealed. The lid is a measuring cup. It fits in a cup holder…although you should never drink in the car. And its stainless so easy to clean. Take a drink to the beach or wherever and it will be cold many hours later. Holds 3-4 average size drinks.
As of posting this episode, wristbands for TC 13 are on sale. Get them fast! The event will be sold out momentarily. Rooms at the host hotel are already sold out but you can book many of the cool Palm Springs hotels nearby and walk. We will be hosting a room party as always plus so much great music, food, pool time, desert fun and much more.
453 Let's Get The Holiday Cocktails Pouring
Dec 16, 2021
We are BACK! Its been a busy and odd few months. Haven’t posted a podcast in a few months. Below are pics from our super fun Bewitched themed party at Tiki Caliente 12. Copalli rum sponsored our cocktail called Bewitching. Serving over 250 drinks in 90 minutes, we know it was popular. If you haven’t tried Copalli we recommend the silver for an awesome Mojito or Daiquiri. We used the barrel rested in our signature cocktail at the event. Below from left to right are Aaron, our devoted rum sponsor. A full cast from the Bewitched party. Endora (Sunshine) playing bartender. And a shot of some of the revelers enjoying themselves.
The first of our Holiday gift ideas is from Cocktail Cadre. This line of shirts, mugs, posters and more are essentially architectural renderings of some of your favorite alcoholic drinks. Sunshine is wearing the Manhattan t-shirt during this episode. Cocktail nerds will love these designs and enjoy wearing them.
Click the pic below to find out more about Copalli Rum. We wouldn’t recommend if we didn't love it. There is a place on the bar shelf for both of these offerings. Try gifting this and grabbing a bottle for yourself. We found them at Hi Times, BevMo and Total Wine.
Another idea for the liquor fan in your life. We tried this scotch and fell in love. Its lightly smoky, fruity and has some nice aged qualities. Enjoy this neat or on the rocks. We have not tried this in a cocktail yet but there is still time for that. Try Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve.
May we suggest a gift for someone who has nothing or everything. Most people like to color, paint, be creative. These Cat Butt coloring books belong on your kitchen fridge. Include a nice set of coloring pencils and your special someone will have hours a fun. Or misery. Perhaps a restraining order filed against them.
Just visit Amazon and search for “catbutt coloring book” and you will have about 100 options. We like this one.
Its Time! Sunshines Very Spicy Rum season. Watch this video for quick instructions and make your own spiced rum. Once you try Sunshines version you can adjust the ingredients to your preferences. There really is no way to mess it up…..sort of.
452 A Zombie Went To Las Vegas
Sep 11, 2021
Alrighty. This podcast is just a quick little something to hold y’all over till the Ladies of the Lounge are back behind the bar. Sunshine is solo this episode with a few quick topics and some listener feedback. MORE notes coming soon…got a party to go to
451 Lost Spirits, Gin In My Tiki Drink, And Changing Your Tiki Name
Aug 14, 2021
Turn the lights down, put on the exotica and mix up the Akashi Guava Sour. This new drink by Sunshine Tiki was inspired by our growing love of Gin. 135º East Dry Gin is a lovely herbal dry gin that mixes very well in a cocktail. All four hosts enjoyed sipping this while recording this episode of ZTL podcast.
All four hosts are in on this episode of ZTL. Sunshine, Starshine, Kalani and Pumpkin are together for one of the rare times we can all be together. After many years of trying to wrangle the cats Sunshine realized that making the ladies wear their headphones helped to keep them in line. When they can hear their own off topic conversation.
This episode focuses on listener mail and feedback. We had several fan submissions to discuss as well as some iTunes reviews that Starshine had been waiting for at least a year or two.
On this episode we again talk about a trip to Area15 in Las Vegas and our much anticipated visit to the new Lost Spirits distillery. The Area15 attraction is a vast indoor array of food, drinks, sights and sounds with many interactive experiences. Previously we shared how much we enjoyed our visit to the Meow Wolf Omega Mart installation. This time we are going to head into the newly opened Lost Spirits. This location is larger than the LA location and has several speakeasy style bars within. Tune in to the next podcast for our review. Check out the links below to consider making your own visit. We highly recommend this Las Vegas experience.
Go Ahead! Check out our friends at Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Soft cotton t’s with great sizing and a new tiki bar on each one. We wear them. We love them. So will you.
450 Bottled Mai Tais, Vegan Tacos And Gotta Go Flamingo
Jul 18, 2021
Sunshine and Kalani here in the lounge for two cocktails and a LOT of listener mail. We have some serious catching up to do with our fans after taking so many weeks off. Conversation includes: Gotta Go Flamingo, Kate’s Lazy Desert, Hi Time wine cellar, pre bottled mai tai, home pickling and Sunshines very odd late night dreams.
What are we drinking on this episode? The Sand Trap. Sunshine is not a fan of blends drinks but does have three recipes in his little book. This one is a take on the piña colada but lets just say its better if you don’t like those SWEET cocktails.
One of our listeners again asked us to review Kate’s Lazy Desert airstream motel in the California desert. Sunshine and the husband have booked a stay and will share all the details when we get back. Till then check out the site yourself and think about booking.
OK, this thing is ridiculous and deservers conversation. Just listen to this episode as we try out this potty training toy/gimmick for the kiddies. Yeah, we have one and we are not embarrassed.
Mentioned on this episode, our favorite booze emporium and EXCELLENT rum selection!
Even the snootiest cocktail snob sometimes has to make do with a quick cocktail shortcut…or go sober. When going sober is not your preference you may try one of the now many bottled cocktails. On The Rocks has a line of drinks including a Mai Tai. Sunshine rated this one 6 of 10 and recommends adding a squeeze of fresh lime and a dark Jamaican rum float. In a pinch this will do. If you have the ingredients and time it is recommended that you mix your own Mai Tai and store it in a large bottle for traveling. It will stay fresh enough for a day or two even without refrigeration if the alcohol content is 20% or more. Don’t forget the ice.
414 Vegan Missionaries Downfall And The Bar Flies Who Like Them More Than Marvel Super Hero Movies
Jun 19, 2021
Sunshine and Pumpkin hopped onto the bar stools for this episode on a warm June afternoon. When Pumpkin is in the lounge we have blends drinks. Sunshine does NOT have many of these blended cocktails in his recipe book so turning to classic drink recipes is always a good idea. Missionaries Downfall from the Total Tiki app by Beachbum Berry. This particular classic 40’s recipe from Don the Beachcomber could be the best of the best when it comes to blended concoctions. Lime, mint and rum are perfectly combined for a refreshing drink that isn’t too sweet or too strong and can be sipped liberally.
Conversation on this episode includes: Super hero movies just need to stop, Golden Tiki Las Vegas has new food items and great new decor, memories of the first ZTL podcasts, dead raccoons in the ceiling of our old apartment, a tiki bar t-shirt club giveaway and more.
As discussed on this episode we recommend the Tiki Plus app from Beachbum Berry. This app is filled with over 250 classic and modern tiki drinks. The app continues to be updated making sure it works on your newest iPhone. On this episode we make Missionaries Downfall using the recipe from the app and no one was disappointed.
Previously on the podcast we have mentioned one of the great tiki events here in the US. Ohana Luaua at the Lake is every June in Lake George NY. Although the event is sold out and likely concluded by the time you see this, LIKE their page on facebook and be ready to book next year so you don’t miss the fun. If you enjoy great music, cocktails, pool time, shopping, room parties and more. The location in the world famous Adirondacks of New York is reason enough to attend. This is one event that we have not yet attended but hear only the best reviews from our regular podcast listeners.
Below, pics from the Golden Tiki. On his last trip to Las Vegas, Sunshine popped into the Golden Tiki as he always does. The bar has added some new food items as well as some great new decor and interactive birds who have a naughty preoccupation with adult language. Listen to the show for more details and you will be compelled to visit for yourself. Oh, and the video poker is usually great!
We love Tiki Bar T-shirt Club. Every month a new shirt delivered right to your door through subscription. Or, go to the site and order just the one you want. Soft cotton T’s that look great on everyone and come in a great range of sizes for men and women. Get your!!!
449 Auntie PuPu Gets A Visit From Mama Juana
Jun 06, 2021
The last new podcast from the ZTL crew was March 15 2021. Apparently we all needed three months off. As all of your hosts started to either return to work or get ready for workplaces that are reopening to the public, things got a little crazy.
This episode was almost a little emotional to record. Sunshine and Kalani are behind the mic with a fantastic new gin cocktail and no scripted talking points at all. Kalani does not like gin but she did enjoy Auntie PuPu’s Butterfly. The drink changes color when acid is added and looks amazing in pictures. It also tastes great. Follow the link for the recipe and try making this one at home. One tip. Get your own bag of butterfly pea flowers and start making the tea right away. Fun!
This episode includes:
Lost of listener mail and iTunes reviews
The smell of space
Mama Juana home infusing challenge
Tiki Oasis Arizona or AZTO actually happened
Inebriated banter and a nice exotica soundtrack for your 60 minute jog, drive, flight etc.
Podcast listener Meredith asked if we had come across a spirit from the Dominican Republic called Mama Juana. And if we had, what would we mix it with. Sunshine had the “pleasure” of trying this infused rum/wine beverage while at Tiki Oasis in 2011 in an elevator of all placed. Not thinking about till the question was asked we have never bought any or mixed any. As luck would have it you can purchase a bag of Mama Juana herbs online and make your own without having to travel to the DR. Stay tuned for a future podcast when we can play with mixing cocktails with this Caribbean concoction.
Ahhhhhhh, the smell of space. Something most human beings will never have the opportunity to experience. A while back Sunshine noticed a kickstarter offer the chance to smell what the blackness of space is like. Turns out its like burnt meat, gunpowder and Bactene. You can still get a bottle for curiosity but be careful. This stuff is POTENT!
Always great new designs coming from our friends at Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Get a one each month or just the one you want. Give a gift subscription to a friend or loved one. We LOVE Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club.
448 Moog Over Rita With Guest Host Nichole Plus Arizona Tiki Oasis Booking Time
Mar 15, 2021
Welcoming new friends to the podcast has been a little more difficult since March of 2020. Keeping things close to home is one way to stay safe and keep the show on the road. Neighbor Nichole joins us for the first time behind the microphone. Nichole was a natural behind the microphone on her first try. Sunshine was actually the one who made some mistakes that caused a few re takes.
Our drink is called MOOG Over Rita. This is a take on a tropical margarita that ended up better than any margarita we have had. The cocktail is simple to build but does have a fair number of ingredients. We do recommend the grapefruit rimming salt for the perfect pop of salty/sweet.
Conversation on this podcast includes: aged rum vs. Añejo, added colors and “natural” flavors in your spirits, visiting Cuba, Tasting grapefruit and coconut liquors and lots more
Step back in time to the early 70’s and get to know the MOOG, the first commercially available synthesizer. Used with some frequency in the exotica genre you will sometimes hear these spaced out vibes while sipping a drink in a tiki bar. Try the Les Baxter album as a great starting point. We have a feeling that you will be adding some Moog exotica classics to your dimly lit tiki bar soundtrack.
As discussed on this episode it is time to register and book rooms for the first tiki event of 2021 since the pandemic started. AZTO is going forward. While we will not be attending (work conflicts) we feel that its a great event for those are feeling safe to do so. Check out the details and decide for yourself. If you do attend please send us some pics and details of the fun. As of posting of this podcast (4/15/21) rooms and wristbands are still available. But, looks like they are booking fairly quick. Go get em!
Join the club! Soft cotton T’s with some of the best vintage tiki bar/hotel art you can find. We wear these shirts every week and always get compliments. We love Tiki Bar T Shirt Club and so will you.
447 Two Rums And a Pisco Make Three Fun Classic Daiquris
Feb 24, 2021
Welcome to the lounge. Sunshine is solo at the bar this time. While the Ladies are off doing what they, Sunshine wanted to send out a podcast that answers a few questions. Top of mind has been a flurry of interest in what rum we prefer with our classic lime daiquiri. Pictured to right are some of (not all by any means) favorite spirits to enjoy in the quintessential drink. Plantation 3 Stars is a blended rum that offers a light sweetness and wonderful aroma. Barsol Pisco isn’t rum at all…;) which is why you should try it. This particular Pisco is classy like a brandy and takes our daiquiri on a journey to South America. Finally, we have an aged rum from SEATTLE…yes. Seattle. Sunshine came across this while on a trip to Washington and now keeps this wonderful rum behind the bar. Sun Rum amber is a good sipper and mixer. Listen to the podcast for all the tasting notes and details about these spirits.
Click any of the pictures below to visit the sites of each of these great spirits.
Also discussed on this episode: Why are drinks made at home not the same as your drink at the bar? Weight loss while drinking, Girl Scout cookies are here, reasons NOT to visit a “tiki bar” , salt free seasons that really taste good, and some Martin Denny on vinyl converted to Digital.
This year all of us in the lounge have been trying things to adjust our lifestyles, improve our health and live our best. Removing added salt from our diets is just one modification. These inexpensive salt free seasons from Target of all places are a slam dunk…and the Chipotle is the super star.
We love Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Click the banner and check out the cool designs. Buy a shirt. Subscribe and get a new one each month. We wear them and so should you.
446 Entice Her With Apricot, Then Give Her A Peach
Feb 11, 2021
The lights are dim, the exotica is playing and Starshine and Sunshine are craving another cocktail that uses egg whites. Last time it was the Pisco Sour, but this time we came across an easy recipe from one of those too common books with 1000 plus drink recipes. The Apricot Lady is short on ingredients but tall on its classy appearance and simple flavor. Robert Hess already had a great how to video on his youtube channel so we recommend watching and trying this one yourself. Don’t be afraid of the egg white. Robert explains why they are safe in almost all cases.

This podcast is known to be a place you can come to find out more of the great things going on in the tiki world. Such are the regular videos from Spike of the Hula Girls. Below are two we talked bout on this episode. Specifically you’ll want to watch this for some back story on both Don the Beachcomber that was located in Huntington Beach/Sunset Beach California and the Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Plus you get some great drink recipes and see how to make them. Black Magic is one of Sunshines all time favorite tiki drinks and until know we didn’t have a recipe.
What an honor to host Jim Hurricane Hayward from the Atomic Grog blog on our first video conference! He has worked tirelessly to decode many Mai Kai cocktail...

The Atomic Grog has many of the secret Mai Kai drink recipes, carefully deconstructed by Jim Hayward.
Mentioned on the show is a site we used to visit all the team. Critiki had been a fun reproduce for finding tiki bars around the world. Although the site is no longer updated it is still a trove of history for the tiki community. If you ever wanted to know what tiki joints may have been in your are in the past you can find out here. Many of the listed locations are still in operation and many others are not. If you haven’t tried it out before take a look and you may find out something you didn’t previously know about one of your favorite haunts or find a new one to visit when pandemic is over.

445 Is That Kombucha In Your Tiki Drink?
Jan 23, 2021
This trip into the Zen Tiki Lounge is nothing more than a nice conversation with great drinks and exotica. Sunshine mixed up a little something tropical with kombucha, rum and fresh juice. Les Baxter is playing throughout the show. Kalani assists with the conversation. Topics include: age demographics in the tiki community, skin care for those who don’t need it, the new dating app for tikis who hate diversity, new exotica playlists on apple radio, dealing with being born last century, and much more.
On this episode we tried the most tropical Kombucha flavor we would find. This pineapple guava, passion fruit booch was a hit. And we make a cocktail with it. This appears to be a limited time flavor so you may not be able to make the exact same drink as we did. Try Brew Dr.
444 A Blue Tsunami Is Headed Your Way, We Warned You
Jan 17, 2021
First things first. Mix yourself the same drink we enjoy on this episode of ZTL. The Blue Tsunami. Pumpkin requested a fruity/boozy tropical style cocktail that would remind her of floating around on a mega cruise ship. It should go without saying that this drink is better than your standard cruise ship libation.
Its 2021 and things are looking so much different than 2020. OK, not really. Reason enough to visit our dimly lit tiki bar for drinks, exotica tunes and conversation. Sunshine is sharing over a dozen of his favorite Arthur Lyman songs including his all time favorite Dahil Sayo.
About 20 minutes into the show the cocktail does its magic on Pumpkin. Long time listeners often tell us they enjoy those moments when she gets a bit tipsy and even more liberal with her vocabulary. Wish granted.
Conversation includes: pandemic survival, what to do outside the house without risking your life, moments of Zen, how to enjoy alcohol based on ABV percentage, ugly food close ups and missed and forgotten listener correspondence.
Just do it! Visit our online store and pick up a pair of our rocks glasses and a nice soft cotton t-shirt. The glasses stack well and take up little space. Our shirts proudly feature our logo and signature saying “The dimly lit tiki bar that lives in your head”
Just a quick suggesting for getting out of the house by staying safe. Get yourself a picnic basket or backpack. Pack it up with your preferred food and beverage. Head to the local park and enjoy your day. Just be sure to find a place with few other people and good distancing. That fresh air will do you good.
443 Bossa Nova, Pisco Sours And A Vist From John Dillermand
Jan 09, 2021
Screwing takes a little longer than just popping it off. And, Starshine would rather screw it than pop it off. These are just two inebriated quotes from this episode of everyones favorite dimly lit tiki bar. Join Sunshine and Starshine for our first episode of 2021. Our theme this time is South America. Bossa Nova and Pisco Sours set the mood for some conversation about 2020 listener statistics, a new naughty kids show from Denmark, Sunshines favorite new bar toy and much more.
Make a Pisco Sour. A classic South American cocktail that is argued to be better in either Chile or Peru. We like the classic version and also enjoy a few twists now and then. Try using a passion fruit syrup instead of simple syrup for a nice change.
2 oz Pisco
1 oz Egg White
1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice (strain pulp)
.75 oz Simple Syrup
Dash of Angostura Bitters
Combine everything but bitters in a shaker with ice and shake very very well. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and top with Angostura Bitters. Extra points if you can make a letter or design with the bitters. Egg whites scare some people but using the pasteurized egg whites in the carton is a safe way to go. Though nothing beats a fresh egg white.
Over a year ago now Sunshine joined a kickstarter for THE NEW cocktail shaker of the future. Elevated Craft Cocktail Shaker is pretty darn nice. The size is just right. Stainless steel. Insulated with locking lid and cap, you can take it anywhere with the drink already inside. Drinks stay cold for up to 24 hours! This is your to go mixed drink for two to four people. Now that we have used it a few times we LOVE that the lid has up to 6oz of measuring rings in the inside. Its wonderful to get one less thing from the bar, ditch that measuring device.
Just watch the children show below from our friends in Denmark. We go into some fun detail about the already off air program on this episode. Again, just watch it. You won’t be sorry. But you may wonder why it was meant for kids.

442 Zooming Towards The New Year In A Tiki Bar With No Mail Service
Dec 27, 2020
Have we made it? Is 2020 about to end? Will it be replaced with something better? There really is no way to tell. So mix yourself a cocktail and listen to us pontificate the potential future for all of us. Sunshine is drinking a Mai Tai made with Ten To One dark Caribbean rum and Facundo Neo silver rum. Kalani is enjoying a right proper Painkiller made with Pussers Navy rum. Pumpkin….well, iced tea.
Mentioned above we tried the Flaviar tasting kit as a holiday gift. Sunshine tried Ten To One rum which was reminiscent of Plantation dark but overall more complex. Facundo Neo is a nice sliver that is dry in taste and sweet on aroma. Both worked very well in a lime daiquiri and the Neo was wonderful in a Hemmingway Daiquiri. Should you try the Flaviar tasting kit? We will discuss more on one of our next podcasts.
Just like 2020 starting to move to the rear view mirror, our old podcast mixing board is doing the same. Sunshine was gifted the Rodecaster Pro seen on the right. We have high hopes that this little doo dad will add some efficiency to editing our humble show as well as make things more fun. One of the best features is the ability to directly input phone calls. Long time listeners recall some very poor quality interviews in the past. We hope 2021 will provide the opportunity to interview more great people in the tiki, rum, music and party scenes. Plus…colorful buttons and lots of fun switches and knobs. Hell, if it lights up with pretty colors Sunshine is all over it. Stay tuned to future podcasts for whatever comes of this new fun toy. And special Mahalo to the husband (Sunshines Hubby) for the purchase.
441 A Very Merry Covid Safe Gift Exchange & Holiday Spectacular
Dec 09, 2020
What a difference a pandemic makes when recording our annual holiday spectacular. In previous years we have invited podcast listeners, friends and family. This year its just your four hosts and a husband or two. Plus masks and distancing. Yeah, not as fun. But we make the most of a holiday gathering with the shenanigans you may be used to. Sipping on several cocktails from our library helps make things fun. CLICK HERE for the full list of drinks and start mixing at home.
We have some great music for you on this episode. The Urban Surf Kings and Jill Martini and the Shrunken Heads have recorded some classics in their unique styles. See below for the links to the artists pages and consider purchasing the ones you like. We only play what we recommend.
Our pictures this year were taken with the aid of a green screen. Each of us posed individually and then we put it all together. If you have a creative someone in your household who can do this we recommend it for some safe fun during quarantine. Who knew that Starshine could bench three podcast hosts holding cocktails?
We really do hope you enjoy the show. We did!
It’s Coquito Time!
Our annual tradition includes Coquito shots on the podcast to get everyone in the mood. Use your recipe and make your own just in time for the holidays.
Podcast listeners ask us each year where they can get holiday music for their tiki bar. We have been fortunate over the years to have relationships with bands who send us music for the show. The Urban Surf Kings have released a trio of songs this season that you will want to hear and add to your collection. Greensleeves, Deck the Halls and I Saw Three Ships. You will hear all three tracks on this episode of Zen Tiki Lounge. And give a listen to their other albums. Sunshine particularly likes the pictured album below, El Camino Del Los Muertos. Mahalo to the band for giving us a jingle to let us know about this awesome album. You can also get their music on iTunes.
In this season of giving we have a treat for you. Jill Martini and the Shrunken Heads have a holiday tune you know and love. The band have released Let it Snow with a tiki/exotica style that you will certainly love and add to your playlist. Click the link and head on over to their site and consider purchasing their 2019 album The Natives are Restless. Mele Kalikimaka! A huge mahalo to the band for allowing us to play the tune on this episode of the podcast.
Several excerpts on this podcast come from the wonderful Christmas albums from Tiki Joe’s Ocean. So great they released a second album just for the holidays. Click the pic and get your copy of the albums.
Give the gift of good taste in t-shirts. Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club has a new soft cotton T each month delivered right to your mailbox.
440 ASMR Failure But Worth A Shot Of Coquito
Dec 02, 2020
Its no secret that the Covid pandemic continues to blaze around the globe. In an abundance of caution (aren’t we all sick of hearing that phrase) we continue to record the podcast via Zoom on most occasions so that we can remain safe in our little bubbles. The first two segments of the show were a failed attempt to try ASMR on our audience. If you follow the kids on tiktok or instagram no doubt you have heard of the popularity of this relaxing and cult like phenomenon. Why didn’t it work? Well, you just can’t speak softly and be heard well over Zoom. Perhaps we will try again when we can all get in the lounge with the good microphones.
Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani are here on this episode sipping this seasons first batch of Coquito. If you haven’t tried making your own, its time. Better than eggnog and easily prepared vegan without sacrificing any flavor or holiday joy.
You should be wearing a shirt from Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Each month a new soft cotton t that people will ask “where did you get that”?
266 A Tiki Bar Holiday In Retro Style
Nov 24, 2020
ZTL XMAS
This episode has been re posted on 11/24/2020 and was originally posted 12/14/12.
Notes and song titles coming soon... Enjoy the podcast and Happy Holidays
Make our classy holiday cocktails in your very own home:
Coquito ("little coconut")
Ingredients
1 cup water
12 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1 inch-long piece of fresh ginger, peeled
1 15-ounce can of Coco Lopez
1 12-ounce can of Carnation Evaporated Milk
1.5 cup light rum (I use Cruzan)
Powdered cinnamon
Directions
Place water, cloves, cinnamon sticks and ginger in a small saucepan to create an infusion. Cook at medium heat until the mixture begins to boil.
After cooking, cover and let the infusion cool for 15 minutes. Remove cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
Place the Coco Lopez, evaporated milk, rum and infusion in a blender. Cover and blend for 30 seconds.
Pour contents into a glass bottle with a cinnamon stick and refrigerate until cold.
Serve in 2-5 ounce glasses. Sprinkle top with powdered cinnamon.
Like an egg nog, the flavor improves with time. It's quite good freshly made, but a 14-28 day aging in the refrigerator does wonders for it.
Christmas Island Sparkling Punch
1 bottle brut champagne
2 cups peppermint tea (brew 4 bags in two cups boiling water, chill before adding to punch)
30 oz pineapple juice
1.5 cups spiced rum (Sunshine's Very Spicy Rum, or another spiced rum that is heavier on the spice and lighter on the vanilla)
4 oz Hibiscus syrup or REAL pomegranate grenadine
Lemon juice to adjust sweet/tartness to your liking
Add everything to a chilled punch bowl and use a large ice ring to keep it cold.
Spiced Caramel Apple
3/4 oz Caramel Apple Vodka
3/4 oz Spiced Rum
1.5 oz Apple Cider
Shake well with crushed ice and serve in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with apple wedges that have been soaked in spiced rum overnight.
439 Don't Be Too Cheap To Put Purple Lights On Your Bush
Oct 20, 2020
Muahahahahaa! Its our favorite time of year here in the Zen Tiki Lounge. Starshine, Pumpkin and Sunshine put on some wigs, grabbed a cocktail and turned on the ol’ ZOOM. Our newest Halloween time cocktail is Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down. SoCal silver rum and Stolen Smoked rum. With citrus and spice plus a torched orange wheel. You’ll be drinking this one through Thanksgiving.
Listen to the show for our hopes and dreams of the Halloween season. The end of the episode includes 4 of Sunshines favorite darker exotica tunes to set the proper mood for. your dimly lit dungeon. Cheers and Mahalo
Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down showcases both SoCal silver rum and Stolen Smoked rum. With citrus and spice plus a torched orange wheel. You’ll be drinking this one through Thanksgiving.
Mentioned on this episode is Sunshines man crush on Spike’s Breezeway Cocktail Hour show. Spike of the Hula Girls has been making the most of Covid while performances are not so much happening. Enjoy Spike as he takes you through a new drink each episode with special guests and tiki centric conversations. Better yet, make the drinks and keep watching more episodes.

324 A Pisco Sour By Any Other Name
Sep 12, 2020
Podcast Re Post: This episode is originally from February 2015. He’s baaaaaaaaaaaaack. Campari Kraken visits the lounge for the fifth time and he has some questions from podcast listeners who joined us during the recording. If you enjoy not having any of your fortunes told, CK is the tiki bar psychic you have been looking for.
Our cocktail this week is a take on the Pisco sour, adding a slight tiki twist. Sunshine mixes both Pisco and Brandy along with falernum and the standard citrus and egg white you love in this classic cocktail. Don’t forget the bitters on top.
287 New Gods Just Discovered While Drinking
Sep 01, 2020
This weeks podcast was almost completely hijacked by Campari Kraken. Flying in on his used magic carpet, Campari guessed the futures of several listeners. Anyone who asks CK a question should always be prepared for a rude if not very honest answer. That is exactly what he delivered.
Sunshine and Kalani engage in a discussion of Gods and Goddesses. As human cultures did in the past, you can always make up a new God to explain something you don't understand. Don't know why toilet water swirls in a certain direction? No problem. Think of a name for your new God. Now make up a story that explains your problem, and it is best that there is not scientific basis for the story whatsoever. See! Now you can explain anything just like the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians did.
Prior to recording the show we asked our friends on Facebook if they wanted to share a cocktail recipe. And, if sipped on the podcast the winners received a ZTL T-Shirt. Kelly Patterson of Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en submitted her drink called Sitting Pretty. This tequila drink was perfect for the hottest week of Summer. Try it for yourself. All ingredients are easy to come by, nothing to difficult here.
Sitting Pretty (submitted by Kelly Patterson)
2 oz Gold Tequila
1 oz Pineapple Juice
.5 oz Grendadine
.25 oz Lime Juice
1 Dash Angostura Bitters
Shake all with ice and strain into a chilled champagne glass. Top with sparkling wine of your choice. Refreshing and intoxicating. Cheers!
270 Passion Pineapple Mojitos And A Tiki Bar Psychic
Aug 21, 2020
This podcast originally posted 2/22/2013 and has been reposted along with the other 6 episodes with appearances by Campari Kraken. Kalani and Sunshine are in the lounge sipping a variety of flavored and classic mojitos. People often ask what drink or drinks to serve for a group when they have little behind the bar experience. A mojito is a great option. Few ingredients and can be customized easily with little effort. See Sunshines batch recipe below and invite your guests to experiment a little at your next cocktail party. Our music this week is an album we found on eMusic.com. "Erotic Lounge Essentials" is a decent album with a large track list of exotica classics covered by Ethel Azama, Bas Sheva and Tak Shindo. Good album to put on and just let it go so you don't have to worry about a play list. Is it erotic per say? Nah. After a few drinks and some music we are joined by resident tiki bar psychic Campari Kraken. CK answers a few listener questions and tells a fortune or two. And in true self aggrandizing style, he subtly informs people how trivial their lives really are. We finish the show with a tune from our friends The Revomatics, White Cap Sunrise. Cheers and Mahalo!

245 The Return of Campari Kraken, Tiki Bar Psychic
Aug 08, 2020
This podcast was originally posted March 16, 2012 and has been re posted August 8, 2020.
Aloha, and welcome to the Zen Tiki Lounge. It has been a few weeks since we got back in the lounge and recorded a podcast. Sunshine, Starshine and Campari Kraken are all here this week. On his first visit, the renowned Kampari Kraken introduced himself as the worlds most famous tiki bar psychic. This time, Campari sips a cocktail that Sunshine named in his honor and reflects on the difficulties of traveling via flying carpet when the weather is damp. No one likes a wet carpet. Campari also answers a few listener questions, if you consider his responses answers. Starshine shares of her excitement for a quickly approaching Las Vegas trip that will include a visit to Frankies Tiki Room and the Rhum Bar, our two favorite places in sin city to grab well crafted rum drinks. If you haven't been to Frankies, we recommend going while the sun is still up. This helps you experience the stark contrast of the Vegas sun and the dimly lit interior of a classic looking tiki bar complete with bamboo decor, carved tikis, hanging puffer fish and a few of their exclusive tiki mugs. And don't forget the cocktails. A complete list of drinks is available by clicking the link above. Sunshine will tell you not to be afraid of their high proof drinks like Bender Ender and Wild Watusi. And, over at Rhum Bar you can find some Cuba and Florida inspired libations. Their zombie isn't quite the traditional because it lacks the anise flavor, which for some is why the like this zombie so much. An ample selection of rum for mixing and sipping is also available at this bright and airy watering hole. Well, there is plenty more squeezed into this show. So listen for all the rest. Sunshine plays one of his favorite tunes at the end, Passage to Papeetee by Kahuna Kawentzmann. A true gem of a tune that takes you to the mystical island of your choice. Cheers and Mahalo.
1 dash orange bitters (Angostura Orange bitters work best)
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with long curl of grapefruit peel. Now you will be able to see the future.
241 Campari Kraken Is The Tiki Bar Psychic
Aug 02, 2020
This is a repost of the original podcast episode which was released February 7, 2012.
After a recent trip to a local casino, Starshine and Sunshine are back in the lounge to tell of their travels. This is mostly to lampoon the worst psychic experience we have ever had. Sylvia Brown attempted to put on a "show" or "reading" but really just ended up leaving us with a heated desire to run back into the casino and find the nearest mai tai. And we did just that. That disappointment led us to finding our own tiki bar psychic Campari Kraken, who makes his first appearance on this episode answering listener questions. But we couldn't be in the mood for predicting the future without a cocktail. Since Starshine wasn't here when we first tried the Puka Shell, we brought it back for a another taste. Just pronouncing Okolehao, the key ingredient in this drink proves that Sunshine still has a lot to learn about the Hawaiian culture. Sunshine was hearing he islands call so our music this week is all Danny Stewart and the Islanders. Good ukelele to drink by. And to prove we are somewhat cultured there is a little bit of island inspired art via the old fashioned X ray machine. The art of Bert Meyers is not only beautiful, but shows us the creatures of the deep and long long ago in a totally new light. Listener mail includes some tips and tricks for easy party planning and how to choose the party to go to. Before we called it a week it was another update for Tiki Caliente 4. This event is something not to miss. Not only will you have a chance to join our ZTL room party but the entire weekend is filled with great musical acts like Martini Kings, Hula Girls, Smokin Menehunes, Sand Devils and The Deadbeat Daddies. Rooms and tickets are on sale now and are going fast. Book NOW and be sure to grab one of the limited edition event mugs when you check out. Puka Shell
4 ounces white grapefruit juice
2.5 ounces Okolehao (Hawaiian ti plant liquor)
1/4 to 1/2 ounce cinnamon infused syrup*
Shake very well with ice and pour into highball filled with crushed ice. Garnish with grapefruit layed over top of drink. *Cinnamon Syrup: simmer 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar and 2 cinnamon sticks for 5 minutes. Turn off heat cover, and cool for 30 minutes and store in a glass bottle. Keep in fridge for use in cocktails, coffee, on ice cream etc.

Jul 20, 2020
Sunshine got out the swiffer and continued to dust off the recently found drink recipes from many years back. After a careful review it appears that of the 37 recipes, a solid 6-8 are keepers and the rest either need work or should stay lost. Julio is our neighbor who is lucky enough to live walking distance to the lounge. Given the choice between two of our lost recipes Julio chose Coconut Mele. Sunshine and completely forgotten how great this drink is. Three kinds of coconut, three rums, a little lime and some orange blossom. Tasty.
Neighbor Julio was invited on the show to talk about an upcoming collaboration to give Sunshine a spin off web series. Without going into to much detail lets just say that Sunshine is finally getting his wish to be launched into space. Shenanigans and inebriation should ensue from there. Julio has been working on short films and has a love of acting/performing. So bottom line, Julio will be directing and staging the series while Sunshine gets to do what he does best. Drink and laugh.
Listen to the show for more: What do you miss about pre pandemic world? Why Malibu rum has a place but should still be hidden you have company over. Exercise is good for you. Eat local and support your neighborhood restaurants. Tiki Bar T-shirt club. The Quiet Village podcast and much more.
Sunshine and Julio drink and discuss plans for the upcoming web series Sunshine In Space!
Mentioned on this episode, we LOVE the Quiet Village podcast. Visit DigiTiki.com for the podcast and streaming exotica 24/7.
We hope you will check our friends at Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Soft Cotton t’s each and every month with a fun new tiki bar design. Delivered right to your mail box. Get them all or just the one you want. We wear them because we love them.
436 Three Legged Flamingos And Pictures With Hobos
Jul 12, 2020
Podcast roll call. Sunshine, yes. Starshine, yes. Kalani, yes. Pumpkin, not present.
Sunshine and the Lady Hobos (listen for those details) are cooped up inside via ZOOM to avoid both a pandemic and 90 plus degree temps. Good thing we always start off with a cool libation. This episode we enjoy Three Legged Flamingo. We pride ourselves in offering recipes with 5 or less ingredients but this is one of our rare exceptions. Though all of the booze and juice needed for this somewhat complex drink are very easy to find. Sunshine discovered while playing with this recipe that the combination of Lychee, Maraschino and Passion liquors in equal parts create what is now one of our house blends. If you want to lend an exotic touch to any drink you can just add half an ounce or more of this mixture and BAM! Follow the link for the full recipe and find out why you will need a third leg for balance.
A good portion of this show is dedicated to listener questions. Mark submitted a great set of questions on chilling alcohol before drinking and using ice vs. the type of glass that is best to prevent dilution. Sunshine has some fairly good experience with these matters and makes some recommendations. One of which is getting yourself a nice set of double walled glass rocks glasses or tumblers. Picture below are the rocks glass we have here in the lounge. When making a Manhattan or other spirit forward cocktail these glasses keep the drink cold 3 times as long as a standard rocks glass without ice. These can be found many place online just by searching “doubled walled rocks glass” and you are sure to find lots of options.
Listen to the podcast for lots more plus a nice set of songs by Milt Raskin at the tail of the show. Cheers and Aloha!
Below our friends from Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club have a really sweet offering this July. The Aloha has a nice logo that looks great on the soft brown cotton t’s. We LOVE Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club and so will you. Get just the shirt you like or subscribe and get them all right in your mailbox.
435 What Will The First Tiki Bar In Space Smell Like?
Jul 06, 2020
This episode of ZTL podcast was recorded via ZOOM. Keep those masks on and stay home as much as possible. Don’t forget to enjoy the cocktails.
Long time listens of the podcast know that all Sunshine does to arrange our next recording is send a text message to the Ladies of the lounge. Whoever answers, joins me on the podcast. Every now and then all three Ladies are available and its time to “wrangle the cats” which is our way of saying using creative editing to reduce the overlapping conversations and laughter. Since we are still in pandemic times this podcast was recorded via ZOOM. ZOOM adds even more challenges but we think we put together a nice show for you.
As we like to do in the Zen Tiki Lounge there is a new cocktail recipe for you. Follow this link and mix up SoCal Hibiscus Flower at home. To do so we recommend using some local SoCal ingredients including SoCal Rum and Simply Gala Hibiscus and Passion syrups. The specific recipe mentioned on this show is NOT the final recipe so use the link above for the perfected recipe.
Discussed on this episode is there Eau De Space kickstarter. This unique fragrance is said to smell exactly like the void of space. Yes, according to NASA the darkness of space actually smells like gun powder, burnt steak and raspberries. Who knew? If you back this kickstarted you get a bottle and another bottle is sent to a K-12 school for educational purposes. Support STEM in education by supporting this kickstarter.
While many of us have extra time at home with no end in sight it has been challenging for some to stay busy. Consider getting some actual training to be behind your own home bar or even get ready to try bartending for yourself when the time is right. The article below has a few of the online courses that range in price from $29 to $299. Several of the least expensive appear to have good ratings and are accredited. Listen to the show for more info, we are NOT affiliated with any of these courses.
Not only do we LOVE Tiki Bar T-Shirt club but if you listen to this episode you an find out how to get a shirt sent right to your mail box. You just have to play song with our little game. First come first served. :)
434 Everyone Loves A Quickie With A Good Soundtrack
Jun 15, 2020
Sunshine Tiki in the lounge this episode. That means you get lots of music and less banter. Its been a few weeks since we posted a show and now that all four hosts are back to working regularly we are trying to get back into our bi weekly schedule. Your music is a classic vinyl album from Henry Mancini that Sunshine has been enjoying often in the Zen Tiki Lounge. Enjoy the full LP with just a little lounge news. AND, be sure to listen to the entire episode to see if you have a chance to get a shirt from our friends at Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club.
Need a quickie cocktail thats nice and stiff? Yeah you do! Click HERE and mix yourself a Rumhattan to enjoy in your dimly lit corner while listening to this podcast.
We LOVE Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. A new soft cotton t each and every month. Get them all or just the one you want. We wouldn’t wear them EVERYWHERE if we weren’t really fans.
433 A Sober Visit To The Dimly Lit Tiki Bar That Lives In Your Head
Jun 05, 2020
What does your Zoom face look like? Pumpkin and Sunshine record this episode via Zoom and tried to capture a screen shot looking halfway decent. Maybe we failed.
In a first of firsts all present hosts of the podcast are sober and completely coherent. Every now and then one of the Ladies of the Lounge will abstain simply because they are being responsible and may need to operate a vehicle. But Sunshine is always at home and rarely has to worry about the dangers of driving under the influence. On this occasion its all about sticking to diet goals and not letting anything get in the way of coming out of pandemic looking better and feeling better than ever.
Abstinence has only led to dreams of our next cocktail. In an effort to support local business we have ordered alcohol and syrups from nearby friends. We are working with SoCal Rum which is crafted in Orange County, CA and Simply Gala syrups also in Southern California. Along with lemon and passion fruits our cocktail inspiration is running wild. Stay tuned to the next episode for the recipe.
Also on this show Pumpkin shares her love of smelly candles and is in LOVE with some scents from Magic Candle Company. This brand is not new and we mentioned their tropical scents on a previous episode. Check out the link and take a look at their various scent options. Maybe something that smells nice will help relieve some pandemic stress?
432 The Road To The Reef Staring Rory Snyder, Kari Hendler And Sir Ronald Oliver
May 20, 2020
On a warm, sunny and clear Tuesday in May the crew of the Zen Tiki Lounge hit the road to Palm Springs. We had a few goals. Break into the Reef, serve ourselves some cocktails and stick our feet in the pool. As you listen to this episode you will realize we accomplished all we set out to do and found time for shenanigans.
While at the Reef we are joined by Rory Snyder and Kari Hendler who essentially responded to the alarm we set off while breaking in. To prove what good sports they are we were allowed to stay and given free reign of the establishment for a few hours. As an added bonus we are joined by Sir Ronald Oliver who gives some great advice for staying positive through film and television viewing choices. We hope you enjoy this on location episode of the podcast and wish you all the best.
Is this what the tiki bar of our future looks like?
431 Four Low Calorie Cocktails (Flashback Episode)
May 05, 2020
During the pandemic many of us have been staying home as much as possible. On a very brief trip to the pharmacy Sunshine got in his car and for whatever reason the iPhone decided to play episode 240 of the podcast. This was back in February of 2012 and involved guest hostess Krista and the fourth low calorie cocktail in a series we did. So, Sunshine was thinking that since he gets requests all year long for ways to drop the sugar and calorie content in drinks that this was a perfect opportunity to put all four of those episodes into one. Bam! Now you get one episode with multiple tips on how to keep your waist trim while still enjoying our favorite tiki style drinks. And as a bonus, our listener mail question was also about how to stretch a cocktail and make it larger (refill less often) and we talk about how to do this without adding more sugar and calories. Take the below direct links to each of the four original podcast episodes if you want to listen to them in their entirety.
*Some of these episodes contain a little political commentary. Around episode 290 we committed to avoiding this, but this was way back in time…
Episode 237 A Low Calorie Mai Tai For A New Year (Mai Tai)
Episode 238 Puka Shells And Spy Music, Cheers! (Puka Shell)
Episode 239 Time For Tiki Caliente 4, Book Your Rooms Now (Pain Killer)
Episode 240 Hawaiian Bruschetta And Grapefruit Daiquiris (Grapefruit Daiquiri or Hemmingway)
Our signature rocks glasses are available in our online store . They nest for easy storage and go through the dishwasher like a dream. 15 ounces of cocktail goodness.
430 In The Lounge With Artist Kat Reeder, The Hawaii Connection
Apr 28, 2020
Sunshine and Pumpkin are very pleased to be joined by Kat Reeder on this episode. Kat is a modern artist living on Oahu who has been creating prints, 3D pop and portraits with a beautiful stylized island look and feel. During the interview we talk about her influences from Peru to Miami and now Hawaii. Sunshine was surprised to find that Kat uses the digital medium to create her pieces because at first glance you my think of watercolor, hand drawing and other formats. We spend a good deal of the interview discussing the process of creating personalize portraits of individuals, couples, families and pets. Kat works with commissions to find exactly what a person feels and desires and turns those conversations into a piece you will certainly look forward to seeing everyday in your home.
Listen to this episode for the full interview with Kat and get to know her influences and style. We hope to be seeing Kat at a tiki event very soon, but till then she offers her work online at KatReeder.com
Below left: Kat Reeder creates custom portraits with the glamour of old films and the colors of the islands. Below center: 3D pop art brings added depth to an already beautiful work. Below right: 12x12 prints that look great individually or in sets of 2 or more.
Is your event cancelled? Is it rescheduled? Will it be touring instead of a big get together? Find out by clicking below and checking directly with each of the event sites. We are all looking forward to getting together with our extended Ohana again soon. Stay up to date with the below resources.
The entire world is now living in a t-shirt and jeans/shorts reality. ZTL recommends Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club for great soft cotton t’s with awesome tiki bar designs. A new one each month delivered right to you home…how’s that for contactless transactions. Easy, safe and comfortable.
429 Navy Style Rum And The Mystery Of The Cream Of Tartar
Apr 21, 2020
Aloha and welcome to our series of quarantine podcasts. Like most human beings we are at home, some of us still working while others are not. Our desire to get together and enjoy a cocktail has not slowed but in fact become even more important. For all these reasons we will continue to host the ZTL podcast but do so in two forms. Sunshine will be hosting mostly music format shows that focus on playing some of his favorite exotic tunes and give the listener a chance to just sit back. Sunshine and the Ladies of the Lounge will host Zoom casts which will sound and feel more like our typical posts. In either case you get the cocktails, music, conversation and more from your favorite dimly lit tiki bar that you can’t actually visit. The blog posts will be very abbreviated. We will share a bullet point list of subjects discussed and a recipe or link to any drinks.
On this show:

428 Tiki Bar Music For Indoor Entrapment
Apr 05, 2020
Aloha and welcome to the Zen Tiki Lounge podcast. We are the dimly lit tiki bar that lives in your head. Listen to this episode for nothing more than great exotica for your quarantine enjoyment. Sunshine plays some of his favorite from master Arthur Lyman, the always mystifying Tikiyaki Orchestra and the incomparable Yma Sumac. Mix yourself that favorite cocktail, dim the lights and relax. Special appearances via phone by Starshine, Pumpkin and Kalani.
Our friends at Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club have a new t every month with a design from an extinct tiki bar, restaurant or hotel. Soft cotton for men and women and designs people will ask you about. We LOVE Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club.
427 The Day The Bars Went Socially Distant
Mar 17, 2020
As mentioned on this episode, this flashback to January 2008 includes some interesting inebriated thoughts from Pumpkin on bovine anatomy. 81 Hai Karate, not just a cheesy 70's cologne
In strange times we do what we can to feel normal and keep moving forward. The Ladies of the lounge and Sunshine got together in the Zen Tiki Lounge for what may be our last fully hosted podcast for some time. Sunshine asked who was available for the show and was surprised that everyone and their husbands wanted to come over for drinks before we are all asked to stay home.
To the upper right you see a shot of our impromptu drink that is the result of using up any of the remnant rums and juices already on hand. Sunshine thought it a good idea to ask listeners to do the same. Sure, stock up on what you can but don’t forget to use up what you have before it spoils. The Socially Distanced cocktail combines three rums, pineapple and mango juices and some fabulous Cardamom syrup from Simply Gala homemade beverage mixers.
Below right you see Sunshine, Starshine, Kalani and Pumpkin along with the Dark Passenger and Mr. Pumpkin. This group of rum loving friends have known each other for decades and truly enjoyed our last get together before social distancing kicks in. On this episode we discuss many things but maybe most importantly is the true need for everyone to listen to the Dr’s and scientists. Stay home. Go outside only for the necessities as seldom as possible. If you have to work, take all precautions. Listen for some fun ideas of what to do at home for the next few weeks.
As a PSA for our community of tiki friends we give big mentions to some of our favorite artists, vendors and seller of wares. You may be cooped up inside but you can order the below great products from your couch or tiki bar .
We wear them. We love them! You should get yourself a shirt from Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Soft cotton T’s and each month you get a new design and color. People will notice you and ask about the shirt on your back. We wouldn’t recommend them if we didn’t believe in the brand.
Just this pas October we were introduced to Simply Gala syrups. Sunshine and Starshine tried most of the flavors and enjoyed them all. We have mixed up cocktails with both the Cardamon and Passion Fruit. There are about a dozen flavors and each one is full of REAL ingredients and makes your cocktail experience all the better. Also great in teas, coffee and more.
If you aren’t already familiar with the art of Doug Horne, its time you were. Doug has a style all his own that brings out the fun, kitsch and exoticness of the world of tiki. And Sunshine has a special place for Dougs cat art, which is proudly seen in his own home. Check out the site, there’s bound to be a print you’ll want to get for yourself.
426 Hurricanes, Charcuterie And Not Prepping For Corona Virus
Mar 08, 2020
Sunshine has just returned from a trip to New Orleans and cruise to the western Caribbean. Kalani joins him in the lounge to go over a trip report which includes trying cocktail mixers from Pat O’Briens. Also on this episode:
Brief review of Latitude 29 NOLA
A visit to Tiki Tolteca, also in NOLA
Reasons to AVOID Harrahs New Orleans
Infomercial madness
Below Left: Pat O’Briens courtyard was one of our favorite places to eat and drink in the French Quarter. Center: Hurricane and Mint Julep at Pat O’Briens. Right: Cocktail mixers purchased at Pat O’Briens.
We enjoyed the outdoor courtyard. This is an iconic place to enjoy a drink and perhaps the chicken and waffles or something more traditional. As discussed on the podcast the cocktails that use the house mixers are fairly bad. Drinks like their mint julep which does not use any of the mixers is quite good. Try both and see what you think. Prices were very fair and service was good.
Although we didn’t have much time to spend at Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29 we quickly realized we only have good things to say. Upon entering the “tikiness” shines with some authentic touches as well as unique to the area touches. The lighting is dim enough to give you that relaxing feel that so man of us desire. In an hour we tried four drinks including Cobras Fang, Mai Tai, Espresso Bongo (Sunshine LOVED this one) and the signature Latitude 29. All drinks were made well by Devin, our bartender who was kind enough to make recommendations and tell us a little more about the bar. Listen to the episode for more.
Tiki Tolteca is a fun visit. This is one of those “tiki adjacent” theme bars that can be considered immersive but not a classic. The location is upstairs above another restaurant but succeeds in separating itself from the other establishment by blocking out all outside light and decorating wall to wall in a tiki mezoamerican vibe. The bartenders were quirky and fun, but bottom line made nice cocktails. Its nice to see Pisco used so well in a tiki style drink.
425 It Tastes Like Tiki, Should We Go To Hukilau? BTW Its Our 14th Anniversary
Feb 16, 2020
WARNING!!! All four hosts are in the lounge for this episode of the podcast. Some listeners find it hard to listen through all the cat wrangling that happens when the whole crew is together. We won’t be offended if you skip this one. But for the hardcore fan…enjoy!
Sunshine challenged the ladies to bring an appetizer with foods they already had on hand. Starshine brought lettuce wraps made with left over deli meats, pickles and cheese. Kalani brought fresh fruit and pita chips. Pumpkin looked in her freezer and found some Trader Joe’s vegan spring rolls that pop right into the oven. Easy no planning apps with no trouble at all.
Still having fun after 14 years of podcast from the Zen Tiki Lounge
This episode is our 14th anniversary podcast. Though we aren’t doing a big celebration its still notable that none of us thought this would go past year one. We have decided only to make a big deal out of the anniversaries that fall on the 5’s, so next year will be a celebration.
Our drink is not an original this time. As many of you know we consider the Tiki Plus app by Beachbum Berry to be our go to tiki drink resource when we don’t have time or resources to create something new. The four of us enjoyed a classic Volcano Bowl that serves 3-4 and includes no less than three kinds of rum. It tastes TIKI as you might imagine. If you have not yet looked into the print and app based resources from the bum, you really should. Money well spent.
Also on this episode:
The Hukilau is coming
Tiki Caliente is sold out
Night terrors
Impromptu entertaining tips
It is still up in the air whether or not we will attend the big event. Just in case our hotel room is booked. We encourage you to check out the site and consider this as a once in a lifetime (or many times) tiki event that everyone should try at least once.
335 A Visit To Smugglers Cove And A 4th Of July Hangover
Feb 08, 2020
This episode originally posted July 2015. After realizing the drink mentioned on the show, The Ladies Man was never posted on our blot we have decided to push this one out again. Hope you enjoy this trip back to 2015.
There is no reason we should deny that we are nursing a hangover. Kalani and Sunshine celebrated July 4th Independence Day with cocktails, BBQ and plenty of exploding objects. Starshine joined us for the festivities but was not available to record this episode of the podcast. To soothe our heads we keep the exotica nice and light, the lights are extra dim and our cocktail is full of citrus and vitamin C. Thats how we do hangover.
When planning a trip to San Francisco for the 2015 Pride event we made sure to put a few cocktail destinations on the menu. At the top of our list was Smuggler's Cove. For a couple of years we have wanted to spend a few hours with the Bay areas most well trained mixologists and very ample cocktail menu. We were lucky enough to have Melissa and Justin taking great care of us in the lower reaches of this nautical themed tiki watering hole. Drink after drink I watched as only the best rums, house made syrups and infusions were used to make spirits so balanced you can't help but sip them while all your cares melt away. Port Royal, Demerara Dry Float and The Expedition were some of our favorites. A big Mahalo to Melissa for crafting excellent cocktails from memory and making time to talk to us while she busily made sure everyone received great service and a memorable drinking experience. Mahalo to Justin for taking a moment to talk and show me some of the bottles behind the bar. We had a great time and will be back.
Melissa is mixing another tiki drink masterpiece at Smugglers Cove
Sunshine sips her first cocktail at Smugglers Cove and is instantly transported to a nautical paradise.
A view of the main bar at Smugglers Cove from the balcony. Be sure to visit all three levels of this wonderful tiki experience in San Francisco
Visiting the Hurricane bar at the Tonga Room is a visual experience. The bar itself is covered in bamboo and volcanic rock with ambient lighting that gives the place just a touch of mystery. Each of the guys behidn the bar were very friendly and showed off their mixing skills. We stuck with the bowl drinks, trying the zombie bowl and a luau bow. Both tasty, throgh we sucked through them far too fast. Get there at 5pm when they open and step up to the bar. It fills up quickly. We recommend one of tables along the water so you can be closer to the rain storms. Order the pupu platter. This plate is filled with ribs, chicken, crab rangoon and probably the best egg rolls I have every eaten.
Sunshine and Fiancee sip a Zombie bowl at the Tonga Room within the Fairmont Hotel San Francisco
Harlow, Chrissy Pants and Sunshine get lit up in more than one way for Independence Day. Cheers to America! This is the evening before the hangover. It happens to all of us once in a while.
424 10.5" Just Isn't Enough, Les Baxter Remixed And A Cocktail From Down Under
Feb 01, 2020
Mentioned on this episode is the Remixed album by the Newton Brothers. If you haven’t tried exotica with a new twist this album may be just for you.
423 Battery Operated Lava Lamps And Canker Sores
Jan 17, 2020
Starshine, Sunshine and Hibiscus are in the lounge for this episode of ZTL. The work week was nothing short of lame and all of us were ready for a fresh cocktail, easy exotica and some non intellectual conversation. Our new drink is called Jaded and was simply inspired by a gift of green Chartreuse. Chartreuse is an old spirit that has been gaining popularity and showing up on modern cocktail menus. Sunshine enjoys the vegetal qualities and challenged himself to put together a drink that includes both gin and rum as well as the appropriately named green spirit.
Please listen by clicking above to hear all we had to say while convalescing in the dimly lit ambiance of the Zen Tiki Lounge.
As discussed on this episode, these tiki themed coupe glasses add a touch of mid century flare to your next up drink.
Consider this a product review. This thing sucks. Sunshine needed a batter operated lava lamp type lamp and happened across this one on Amazon. The design is actually very cool. Its 10” tall and has a red light that really makes the lava action look nice. A small fan inside the lamp blows plastic lava bubbles continuously. The batteries did last a long time. But, the lava bubbles clogged at the base after just a minute of use and the lamp required frequent shaking in order to work. Other reviews indicate this may be a common issue with the design or the manufacture of this particular product. We have decided to order another one and give it another shot but aren’t putting our expectations too high considering its only $14.99.
Also mentioned on this episode, we share more reasons you NEED this book.
We love Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club and so will you. Every month a new soft cotton t that will look good on you and people will ask you “where did you get that cook tiki shirt”?
422 Welcoming 2020 With The Scurvy Killer And Kalani Cleans Her Super Dirty Couch
Jan 05, 2020
We are starting the new year with one of our most popular Zen Tiki Lounge drinks. The Scurvy Killer is tiki AF. Fresh citrus, rum, spice and bitters blend beautifully and please everyone. This is only one of two drinks that Kalani actually takes the time to make for herself at home. At past room parties we have served upwards of 1000 of these and will offer many more in the future. Simple ingredients mean anyone can mix this up at home. Try Scurvy Killer.
Discussed on this episode is the recent book by Kelly Hiphipahula Reily and Trader Tom Morgan. The Home Bar Guide to Tropical Cocktails is the NEW must have bar book and coffee table conversation piece. The recipes are solid and often use ingredients that are not difficult to find. Syrups and mixers include instructions to help you make some of your own. The illustrations make this bar book one that you can hardly put down. Buy a copy and bring it to a tiki event to get it signed!
During the episode Kalani shared a sample of Green Bee eye cream. For the past few weeks she has been raving about these products and its about time we got to try them. The brightening eye cream goes on non oily and did provide some instant smoothness and tightening under Sunshines eyes. These products are only available in some states and may be in your local dispensary.
In response to listener email, we share our enjoyment of the Quiet Village Podcast. Marty is an expert in finding great exotica from around the world. And, each episode comes with a track list so you can search for songs you must have on iTunes, CD Baby or other sources. Never miss an episode, we sure don’t.
We are not sponsored by the below products nor are we in the medical profession….obviously. But, Sunshine has tried both the high end product on the left which costs upwards of $35 a bottle for just a few doses and the produce ton the right is similar and costs much less. So, do anti hang over pills work. We say yes. It does appear the products with DHM seem to help you feel refreshed the morning after several cocktails. You may want to keep one of these in your tool of tricks for those times that you just didn’t say when soon enough,.
Everyone needs a solid t-shirt with cool vintage art and design. We LOVE tiki bar t-shirt club. For over two years we have proudly worn these shirts and like striking up a conversation when people ask where we got them. Subscribe to the club and get them all or buy just the one you want.
421 Annual Holiday Tiki Bar Spectacular With Jeff Ballard And TikiComber App
Dec 02, 2019
Aloooooooha! it was hard for us to believe that this was our 14th annual Holiday Spectacular. Sunshine, Pumpkin, Starshine and Kalani are in the Zen Tiki Lounge behind the microphone sharing some fun memories while sipping on a myriad of our favorite winter concoctions. Use the links below to get the recipes and mix things up for yourself. You will have to listen to the entire episode to hear the music, fun and ridiculousness. A highlight of this years show is our visit with Jeff Ballard who created the TikiComber app and has been bringing us his travels via TikiTrail for the past few years. There is plenty of holiday tiki themed goodness in this podcast so read below and listen to get it all.
coquito has become a favorite here in the lounge. a few years back Sunshine swapped out canned milk for coconut milk to make this holiday staple vegan. now even Pumpkin loves it. enjoy as a shot or a small drink on the rocks.
Also enjoyed on this episode is our “better buttered rum”. what makes it better? more spice! follow our recipe and enjoy anytime there is a chill in the air.,
The TikiComber app is ready for you to download and begin collecting along your travels. It is’t a competition but you may find yourself wanting to compete with all the tikiphiles out there.
Below are shots from the TikiComber app. One the left you see the profile card that Sunshine created for himself which can be shared with other app users when you meet up. Second is the list of tikiphiles you meet along your travels. Center is where you keep all the treasures you an collect via the scanning function on the app. Many bars along your travels will have secret items that you can collect by being within close proximity and adding them to the app. Second from right show the major functions of the app and we think that collecting cocktails will be one of the most popular features. On the far right is the leaderboard that shows who is making the most of the app. Compete with others to move higher up as you collect places, people and cocktails.
After discussion the TikiComber app, Sunshine Tiki and Jeff Ballard enjoyed cocktails and shenanigans. At left Sunshine and Jeff sip on Better Buttered Rum. Center Jeff shows off his Tiki Trail signature mug that is available in his online store. And right Sunshine and Jeff toast with Tipsy Mrs. Clause.
Below left, Sunshine and Pumpkin contemplate the true meaning of mass consumerism and the impact on the global economy. At center, Sunshine and Kalani hug it out after no less than 4 cocktails and warm feelings of inebriation. Below right, Sunshine and Starshine pose with the puppets Whiskey who only wants to know when more food will fall on the floor.
One of the best things about having friends drop by the lounge is the things they bring with them. Jeff was happy to share some rum from SoCal Rum. Having never heard of this particular rum we were eager to try. Sunshine admits that silver rums aren’t usually his thing, but sometimes you find surprises where you may not expect them. This silver rum made right here in Orange County California starts with an aroma of butterscotch, tastes middle sweet and some hints of pineapple and citrus. Wow! Its fair to say you can enjoy this silver neat or on ice and in cocktails. Currently this spirit is available in bars and restaurants but we can only hope they gain a wider audience and it becomes available in your local liquor barn.
Give Tiki Bar T-shirt club for the holidays. we wear them! we love them! we wouldn’t recommend them if we didn’t actually enjoy showing them off. you will get compliments and questions when you wear shirts from tiki bar tshirt club.
420 Island Fruitcake: Featuring New Music from Jill Martini and The Shrunken Heads
Nov 17, 2019
As we approach the full swing of the holiday season you will need a few cocktail recipes to show off with friends and family. One of our favorites is Island Fruitcake. Sunshine whipped this one up a few years back and it has been enjoyed by many. Via email we received some great feedback on this one including some variations on the recipe that podcast listeners have tried at home. We do encourage switching it up.
What is a fruitcake? That question is harder and harder to answer as each generation comes into adulthood. Those of us in our 40's, 50's 60's and even more silver of generations know that it is a baked good of sometimes evil and sometimes joy. Dense. Heavy. Spiced. Fruity. What if a cocktail imparted only the better notions of said baked good? That is what Island Fruitcake tries to be. Two parts spice and three parts fruit is what makes Island Fruitcake a miracle in mixology. Stirred together these liquors and spiced rum become something reminiscent of the forbidden cake of your darkest holiday dreams.
Ok, you have your cocktail. Lets listen to some music!
If you attended Circa Caliente this past October you may have had the chance to hear Jill Martini and the Shrunken Heads. The group played Sunday afternoon and served as the whip cream on a weekend full great live performances. Jill, a good friend of the podcast sent us the album and Sunshine was more than happy to play tracks on this episode. This excerpt from bio gives you a little backstory on her most recent musical endeavors: “Jill took up the ukulele while playing ukulele bass in "Rinkon Tiki," a Hawaiian island/Trop. Rock ukulele group with two master percussionists, two other singer/ukulele players and a Hawaiian steel-guitar.
After a couple of years playing bass in Rinkon Tiki, Jill's musical direction moved to a more tiki-cocktail, exotica, traditional Hawaiian one. It was only natural that she should take up ukulele full time and invite her musical contributors from the Soiree (Miles Lang and Michael Velasquez) to be part of her new group: Jill Martini and the Shrunken Heads.
Jill’s first album with the Shrunken Heads was released in October 2019 and is available on digital and compact disc formats.”
Learn more at JillMartini.com, get the album or download the music. Plus find out where she will be playing in future.

419 Circa Caliente 11.5 Room Crawl Memories And Highlights
Nov 09, 2019
Join Sunshine Tiki and Starshine Tiki in the Zen Tiki Lounge for a walk down Circa Caliente Room Crawl memory lane. Over the past 13 years we have recorded live at many events but have never shared our thoughts on each room on the crawl in sequential order. Until now! Below you will find the room crawl list, and some pictures from each room in the order they happened over the awesome Circa weekend.
Don’t forget to try mixing up Demerara Tamarindo, the ZTL cocktail mentioned on this episode. Fresh citrus, tamarind, Demerara rum and a bit of Mezcal for smokiness.
Hey wait! Before we get to the room crawl memories we need to tell you about a new bar syrup we picked up at Circa Caliente. Simply Gala offers a line of “perfect for tiki drink” syrups that have a great natural flavor. Cardamom for example was one of the flavors that you won’t find in enough cocktails. We tried it first with the classic lime daiquiri and loved it. Listen to this episode for the recipe. And, try orgeat, passion, ginger and others. Yum!
If you attend one the many weekend long tiki events you will want to look out for the poster that provides the line up for all the parties, take a picture and never miss a free cocktail.
We love Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Each month a new soft cotton t with an extinct tiki bar featured. Its tiki bar archeology right on your chest. Get one, or get them all.
418 How To Make Falernum, Spiced Rum And What To Do With Them
Sep 21, 2019
Make your own Falernum and Spice Rum. Thats the message in this episode of ZTL podcast. Just before heading off on an Alaskan cruise, Sunshine jumped behind the bar to record this quick little show. With fall approaching its a great time to spice some of your own rum and why not try making falernum at the same time. These two infusions are essential in tiki mixology and by making your own version you can assume more control over the flavor profile of your cocktails.
Lets start with spiced rum. Sunshines recipe is right here in this convenient how to video. Watch it and try making your own spiced rum. Plus! Sunshine shares lots of ways to use spiced rum on this episode of ZTL.
About 8 years ago we started playing with falernum recipes here in the lounge. We found that the best starting point came from the falernum #8 recipe on the Cocktail Chronicles site. And we still recommend people use this as a great way to get off to a good start making your own classic falernum. After all these years Sunshine Tiki has adjusted this recipe to his liking, adding more almond and more ginger with a little less clove. Try falernum #8 the way it is or try Sunshines version. Then, don't hesitate to adjust these more to your preferences. It is recommended you try one of these recipes before tweaking. Just like cooking it is good to know wha the original tastes and smells like before you make modifications.
Sunshines Falernum (adjusted from Falernum #8)
8 oz. Wray & Newphew Overproof Rum
Zest of 8 Limes (reserve whole limes for juice in step 2)
24 whole cloves
2-4 oz. fresh chopped Ginger
Combine all ingredients in a glass jar and seal with a lid. Allow to infuse for 48 hours.
Juice of 8 limes with pulp strained out
2 cups white sugar
1/2 teaspoon Almond extract
Combine all ingredients in a glass jar and seal with a lid. Shake until sugar dissolves and solution is translucent. Store in refrigerator.
After 48 hours, strain cloves and ginger from the rum infusion. Combine with the syrup mixture. Bang! Falernum.
We have been telling you of our love of Tiki Bar T-shirt Club for almost two years. If you haven’t checked them out its time you do. Soft cotton t’s for men and women with a new (extinct) tiki bar on each one. When you wear these shirts you will get compliments. The best!
417 Tasting Don Q 2005 Single Barrel, XM Special Demerara With A Tamarind Cocktail
Aug 31, 2019
At the beginning of this podcast episode Sunshine had a working drink in the shaker. Tamarind nectar was in good supply behind the bar as well as fresh limes and some well prices Demerara just picked up at the local liquor barn. The first taste was good however the ladies had some immediate feedback. Starshine wanted a little mezcal and tajin seasoning added. Then it needed a bit more pineapple rum to balance. Its good to have taste testers on hand to help perfect a drink recipe. As with most drinks we craft here in the Zen Tiki Lounge, this one only has 6 ingredients and is easy to replicate in your home. Enjoy Demerara Tamarindo
Next we moved on to trying some of the rums that happened to be on sale at our local booze emporium. A few years back we happened upon the Don Q 2005 Single Barrel and recall enjoying it as a nice sipper. We were delighted that a few years later this offering from Don Q is just what we remember and stands up as a quality Puerto Rican rum with good character and a particularly anapestic aroma. The odd duck in the bunch is the XM Special Demerara. You really can’t find any good info online about this rum other than it is supposed to be full 12 year aged Demerara, not a blend. Its sweet and a little earthy. Nice for mixing and decent for sipping.
On a recent Vegas trip Sunshine and a friend tried Cheers Restore supplement after a night of ample imbibing. This supplement is packed with DHM and other vitamins that are supposed to help prevent the feeling of fatigue, headache and general hangover the next morning. Did it work? Well, no one had a hangover and we did wake up ready for another day in Las Vegas. Would we have felt the same without this supplement? Too soon to tell. Both nights we tried using this we noticed that we slept better than usual. As a frequent visitor of sin city Sunshine is accostomed to getting too little sleep. So, even if this simply helps you rest more peacefully…maybe that’s enough. Naturally the directions do say to drink water and get some sleep. We will have to try this another time or two before we give a full thumbs up or not.
Other conversation on this episode includes: plans for a future episode dedicated to the banana, avoiding hangovers, things to do with empty liquor bottles, elderly private moments, house fly infestations, an upcoming meet up in Las Vegas and the 75th birthday of the mai tai.

416 Sipping A Classic 1944 Trader Vic's Mai Tai While Not At Tiki Oasis
Aug 10, 2019
Sunshine here in the lounge solo for this episode. Conversation includes Tiki Oasis, Lost Spirits Distillery, home bar cocktail menus, and plenty of classic Exotica. Starting with our cocktail, the 1944 Trader Vic’s Mai Tai made with Rhum Clement, Kula Hawaiian Dark Rum, Liquid Alchemist Orgeat. Kula Dark Rum happened to be on sale and worth trying. Sunshine gives his opinions on the podcast with some detail on aroma, character and usability in cocktails. The Orgeat by Liquid Alchemist was also teste4d in this classic recipe with good results though recipe modification was needed.
.25 oz. Orgeat (we double this amount as Liquid Alchemist is lighter in flavor than most, but good)
.25 oz. Simple syrup
Shake everything together with crushed ice and pour unstrained into a glass. Garnish with spent lime half and mint.
Looking forward to a trip to Lost Spirits distillery, Sunshine shares some news about the newly refurbished facility that recently reopened. Lost Spirits is a not to be missed attraction in Los Angeles that sells our weeks to months ahead of time. Plan your trip and book a visit.

415 Starving Children Can Eat Butter Mints And Pass The Nuts Please
Jul 19, 2019
It is mid July and time for a slushy cocktail that Pumpkin tends to demand this time of year. Bayou Swamp Slush is our newest drink created just for our original hostess. Mixing ripe citrus and satsuma infused rum with just a touch of coconut cream gives you a nice blended cruise ship style drink with more flavor and less sugar. While sipping our new frosty we dive into a host of subjects and listen to new music from The Modernes.
Sunshine shares an editorial on things NOT to do when invited to a party
Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club: Get a complimentary shirt with purchase from ZTL, details on podcast
Bayou Swamp Slush is inspired by the Satsuma orchards of Louisiana and cane rum. Your blender will enjoy this unique concoction as mush as you do.
One of the best parts of hosting a podcast is the community that you have a chance to be involved with. Time and distance don’t really separate people when you share through the digital sphere. Recently Nick from the Modernes reached out and let us sample some of their music from the self titled album The Modernes. The band hails from Akron, OH and plays surf, rockabilly jazz to name a few genres. Two tracks stood out as our favorites here in the lounge, both of which we play on this episode. We think after listening to Suburban Wave and Inland Island you will want to add the tracks or album to your playlist. Here is a quick bio from the band: The Modernes are a three-piece band out of Akron, OH. Since 2017, The Modernes have been providing high-energy swampy surf and rockabilly originals and an extensive catalog of re-envisioned classics. The Modernes released their self-titled debut EP June 25th, featuring 4 original tracks, and their take on Johnny Cash's original "Big River". their follow-up full length album, featuring modern takes on surf and rockabilly originals is slated for release in 2020. Until then, you can catch them at venues across Northeast Ohio with occasional stops in Michigan, Pennsylvania, NYC, and Tennessee. More info about the band, tour dates, and music videos can be found at www.facebook.com/themodernes.
Listen to this episode to find out how you could get a shirt from our favorite t-shirt brand. Each month a new soft cotton T with a new extinct tiki bar or restaurant on the shirt. 413 Music From IntoxiKA, Tikiland Trading, Dawn Marie The Best Cocktail Waitress And Visit To Calwise Spirits
Jun 20, 2019
Did we start with a cocktail in our dimly lit tiki bar? Yes, always! Listen to the podcast for the recipe and some ideas on mixing fun new ingredients anyone can find while on vacation visiting distilleries and other fun cocktail hot spots. With your cocktail ready its time to listen to IntoxiKA. Marty Lush on the Quiet Village podcast just released his latest episode and featured this band from Honolulu. Exotica is a genre that allows ample twists and turns over time. The guys from IntoxiKA are adding some electronic and other elements to many of the classic exotica tunes we all love. Click the link to go to their page and purchase the album. We dare you not to enjoy while relaxing by the pool or just about anywhere.
Below are some of our favorite mixers and spirits as discussed on this episode. Liquid Alchemist is making hand crafted mixers with real ingredients. The Orgeat is lighter in almond flavor that you may be used to, and is also very creamy and floral in overall character. A great way to make a mai tai and many other tiki style drinks. The ginger has a nice heat you can feel on the back of the throat and worked beautifully with Calwise Big Sur Gin. Our friends at Calwise have graciously sponsored our previous room parties and we continue to keep all three of their spirits behind our bar. Big Sur Gin is a bit different than any of the mass produced gins. This 40% spirit is buttery and sweet on the nose with a hint of fresh cut grass.
More and more tiki shopping diversions are popping up all over the country. We could all play “is it tiki?” but you won’t have to do that with Tikiland Trading Co. The organizers of this event including artist Tiki Tony have done an excellent job ensuring that great artists, live music and cocktails are always the central elements. Although the event has already moved from place to place, it has only been getting better. The crew from ZTL podcast attended the most recent event in Santa Ana, CA at the Orange County Heritage Museum. The venue was a perfect outdoor spot for sipping great cocktails and dropping a few $$ with artists we know and some new ones too.
Sunshine Tiki enjoys his trips to Las Vegas. While at Bally’s, a frequent destination in sin city, Sunshine is always happy to see his favorite cocktail server Dawn Marie. Dawn Marie doesn’t just serve drinks to gamblers but she does it in a way that adds a unique touch to the Vegas experience. Listen to the show to hear a quick moment with Dawn Marie….the best cocktail server in Las Vegas!

410 Nerding Out With Thanos, Hangover Cures, Absinthe and Cruise Ship Bars
Apr 08, 2019
Please join us on this episode of Zen Tiki Lounge podcast for the usual bar banter, drink recipes and friendly advice. Sunshine, Kalani and Starshine got together relatively last minute for an unplanned recording session. We discuss the out of control flavors of modern beverages, crafting new drinks with ingredients you want to blow through, old workplace shenanigans, are Costco spirits worth it?, sold out Tiki Caliente event, avoiding hangovers and so much more. And, listen to this episode for your chance to get a shirt from tikibartshirtclub.com
Below are some shots from Alcohol Infusions site discussed on this episode. If you need some ideas click on over. This page is dedicated to upping your spirit game and crafting some of the best classic and nouveau cocktails. Not only are the pics outstanding, the recommendations and kits are simple enough for the novice.
This absinthe infusing kit from Bootleg Botanicals is a great starting point if you want to infuse your own absinthe. Just like Gin, Absinthe is a grain neutral spirit that is infused with herbs, spices, roots and seeds. There are many variations however buying a kit helps get your started. Sunshine liked this final product and has enjoyed drinking it in the classic style as well as in Sazerac cocktails.
Kalani, Starshine and the kids were able to visit the new Bamboo Club in Long Beach, CA just a week after it opened. This new tiki establishment in the Southern California region was decked out by Bamboo Ben and offers a drink menu with the usual tiki drink suspects plus some of their own concoctions. Listen to the show for more detail on the hits and misses from the ladies of the lounge.

409 Alcohol-Free Drinks In London, Zombie Village San Francisco And Social Media Influencers
Mar 25, 2019
There is plenty going on in our dimly lit tiki bar this episode of ZTL podcast. Sunshine and Pumpkin start with a fabulous vintage tiki drink from the 1940’s. Next we dive into the mail sack to catch up on a few items sent in from listeners. When it came time for a second drink Pumpkin brought a quick dice game that proved perfect for choosing our next spirit and all the mixers needed for something quite tasty. We also discuss a recent visit to Zombie Village in SF, Aero Club bar in San Diego, the woes of essential oils, Mocktails in London and much more.
On the Right is a look at the new book by Andrea Waters and Catherine Salway. We were lucky enough to get an advance look at the book and found both the illustrations and alcohol free drinks look amazing. We all have non drinking friends and if you have ever felt challenged to concoct something that is so tasty you don’t miss the booze, this book may be for you. Listen to hear Sunshine share some initial thoughts and pre order on Amazon to get your copy soon. On our next episode we will mix a few alcohol-free drinks and do a tasting just for our dedicated listeners.
Below Left: Pumpkin and Sunshine enjoy the Cocoanut Grove cocktail from the Beachbum Berry app Total Tiki. When we don’t have time to whip up one of our own drink recipes we generally us Total Tiki as our go to tiki drink resource. Beachbum Berry has released many cocktail books over the last decade plus that diligently study the tiki drinks of the past. The Bum makes sure that every recipe is as close to the original as possible and even gives substitution ideas for ingredients that have gone extinct. This time we chose the Cocoanut Grove from the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, a hangout for Hollywoods rich and famous from the 1920’s through 1960’s. Below Right: a shot from the Total Tiki app which allows you to search by ingredient, style of drink and much more.
In the third segment of the show Pumpkin gets out this dice game she was given at a white elephant party. We have tried many a cocktail game here in the lounge and its fair to say this one worked out better than most. In fact the cocktail created as indicated by a roll of the dice was quite good. It would appear that this particularly set of dice from Refinery and Co. is no longer available but we have linked to another drinking game that is still available. You may want to give them a try. These games are from a company right here in Californian, just a hop skip and jump from our very own dimly lit tiki bar. The drink to the right was actually made with the ingredients suggested by a roll of the dice picture. Not bad at all.
On a recent California coastal Cruise, Sunshine visited Zombie Village in San Francisco. This is the newest immersive themed bar to hit the Bay Area. The below pic don’t really do justice to this beautiful new space with a fairly expansive cocktail menu that has many of its own specialties and a few familiar favorites. Listen to this episode of the podcast to hear what Sunshine had to say about his visit and some of his favorite drinks.
We LOVE Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club! All of us here at ZTL proudly wear these soft cotton T’s, each one showing off a different tiki bar of the past. Buy just the one you want or have them delivered right to your door each and every month.
408 What Kind Of Cheese Do You Want Inside You?
Mar 01, 2019
Having good friends stop by the lounge is always a treat. On this episode Kalani and Sunshine are joined by Susan Nelson. Susan isn’t a podcast virgin. Sunshine challenged both Susan and Kalani to give gin another try. Pictured above is our version of a sling but with a bit of a tropical twist. Both ladies enjoyed the combination of fresh juices, gin and cachaça. The key to this cocktail is choosing a gin that is small batch and high on floral notes while allowing juniper and some of the usual bitterness to take a back seat. Follow the link to mix your own Rain Forest Sling. After a nice drink the three hosts went down the rabbit hole of semi appropriate conversation including subjects such as: Tiki Caliente is sold out, bathroom habits no one should share, how to get the most out of your designated driver, new cakes from @BrianBakesCakes on IG, pairing cocktails with amazing cakes such as the on pictured above which is infused with all the goodness of a Manhattan. And more. Lots more that we can’t remember so long after recording the episode.
Be fancy! While listening to the ZTL podcast you really should enjoy your drink from one of our double size rocks glasses and while wearing one of our soft cotton t-shirts. For a limited time get 20% off your order over $50. Listen to this episode for the code.

407 Super Bowl Denial With A Good Dose Of Anti-Inflammatories
Feb 04, 2019
This episode is all Sunshine and music. Every now and then the Ladies of the lounge are busy but Sunshine wants to get behind the mic anyway. This is when you get a lot of exotica thrown at you for setting the mood in your dimly lit corner with cocktail in hand. No other notes needed. Just listen and enjoy the short conversation and songs from Tikiyaki Orchestra, Les Baxter, The Out-Islanders, Esquivel and The Crazed Mugs.
For two years we have been telling you to try Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club. Every month a new soft cotton T with a different tiki bar, hotel or restaurant featured. Each shirt tells the story of a tiki establishment that is no longer in business. Its tiki bar archeology right on your chest. Buy one or subscribe and get them all.
Tiki Caliente 11 is SOLD OUT!
On an upcoming episode we will have host Rory Snyder tell us all about the event and the fun times ahead of us. But for those who didn’t already purchase a wristband, you’ll have to wait till next year. Just 600 lucky attendees will be there this May along with the Zen Tiki Lounge.
406 Would You Motorboat A Mermaid?
Jan 31, 2019
In the history of ZTL podcast the ladies have never enjoyed an all spirit cocktail. Things change! Finally. Sunshine was inspired by a recent trip to the local booze barn and played with some new ingredients. The Smudge Pot is a sipping cocktail for those who really enjoy old fashioneds and Negronis. We started in on these before getting to the tiki mail and a rousing romp through subject matter that is more interesting while inebriated.
Over the years we have talked about the Wreck Bar in Ft. Lauderdale a few times. Sunshine and husband have had the pleasure of visiting a few times while spending a little time in town before and after hopping on cruise ships. The bar itself tends to be very low key earlier I the day and livens up in the evening with or without a mermaid show. Live bands are also frequent entertainment. But MeduSirena (Marina) and her troop of aquatic creatures of the not so deep are the real draw. Oh, and have a tropical cocktail while you are there. We recommend the Zombie and the Havana Club Hemingway.
Sunshine has had the pleasure of swimming with Marina and the mermaids on one lucky occasion. A once in a lifetime experience for any tikiphile. But we always asked when the men were going to start swashing around to entertain the drinking patrons. It’s happened. Starting in February the Aquamen will begin to swim for your enjoyment in the evenings. Now we have to visit the Wreck Bar again as soon as possible. And so do you.
After our second round of Smudge Pots we moved on to trying some recent purchases from a local LA distillery. Vapid Vodka and Astral Pacific Gin are made by The Spirit Guild and now more widely available in Southern California. The vodka is distilled from clementine oranges and actually does have a honey sweet aroma and light fruit flavor. Astral Pacific Gin is astringent first and then a complex herbal aroma with an almost buttery character. Yeah, all those things. Each bottle will run you about $35.00 and we think the gin is worth a try at that price.
Join the crew of the Zen Tiki Lounge podcast at the hottest event this may in Palm Springs. Rory Snyder brings us Tiki Caliente 11! Listen to this episode to hear why we recommend the event and why you should buy your wristband starting February 2 when they go on sale and quickly sell out.
405 God Walks Into Our Tiki Bar
Jan 15, 2019
On this episode of ZTL podcast Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani try our latest cocktail creation, Mrs. Kravitz’ Daydream. Sunshine was inspired by the Bewitched character who was the frequent victim of witchcraft and a medaling mother in law. If Gladys was sipping this drink before peeping through her window it may explain a few things. Also on this show: Ice Made Clear is the latest ice making device that actually seems to make clear ice. A quick update on Tiki Caliente 11. Some anecdotal conversation about how difficult it is to be a cocktail server in a casino. Fun new bottle LED lights to brighten your bar. Nude zamboni operators and more.
If you would like to make the cocktail featured in this episode we do recommend you try to find ingredients as similar as possible but with the understanding that the plum and vanilla liquor from Edinburgh Gin isn’t easy to find stateside. We did find that you can approximate this liquor by using equal parts plum wine and a vanilla spirit that is approximately 25% alcohol by volume.
Below left is a shot of the battery operated fairy lights that fit inside an empty bottle. The batter compartment looks like a cork and we found that the batteries last for about 8 hours and can be replaced. Many of these are available online, just search for “bottle LED lights” and you will get several options. Below right is the Ice Made Clear ice maker. This was a kickstarter that Sunshine signed up fort a year ago and now we finally have our kit. Of all the clear ice makers we have tried this one is the best. One key is starting with warm/hot tap water to ensure the clearest ice. The kit comes with two molds and you can order other shapes later.
THE January shirt from tiki bar t shirt club is a beauty. We love all our shirts, each one shows off an extinct tiki bar of the past. you may not be able to visit these locations anymore but you can remember them with these cool t’s. Get just the shirt you want or get a new one delivered each month. Each shirt comes with a story of the establishment.
On February 2nd 2019 wristbands will go on sale for Tiki Caliente 11. The main hotel is sold out but you can still join the fun with a wristband and booking in a neighboring hotel. The crew of ZTL will be there helping organize the room crawl and hosting our own party on Friday night. The event is limited to just 600 people so that everyone has plenty of space and we keep a semi cozy feel. Pool, cocktails, music, art, symposiums, food and shenanigans for four days! Join us in May.

403 Hot Buttered Rum Perfection And Peppermint Scented Toilet Paper
Dec 14, 2018
You likely noticed the tikiesque holiday music at the beginning and end of this episode. Our good friends at Tiki Joe’s Ocean have two Christmas albums that are perfect for adding some island flair to your tiki shindigs this winter season. Just click the album cover above to get your copy.
Sipped liberally during this episode of the podcast is our new Hot Buttered Rum recipe. If you have a vegan around you can leave out the butter batter and substitute with a teaspoon of sugar.
Some of the best cocktails have been around for a very long time. A good Hot Buttered Rum is a classic cold weather libation that is especially popular during the winter holidays. We see this one popping back up on many bar menus with the awesome resurgence of vintage drinks and spirits. Sunshine finally crafted his own recipe for the rum batter that you can now make by following this recipe.
What makes this version of an old time drink more special? Two things. Sunshine uses salted butter to add just a touch of savory to an otherwise sweet drink. And, by listener suggestion the recipe now includes a lightly brewed Earl Grey tea as the base vs. using plain hot water. Mahalo to our long time listener Mr. McKinley for the suggestion.
This happens to be our 13th Holiday Spectacular. Sunshine, Pumpkin, Starshine and Kalani are in the lounge drinking, gift giving and shooting the inebriated breeze. After round three Pumpkin educates the entire crew on the real meaning of the old Yankee Doodle Dandy song. Sunshine had no idea the fun tune from elementary school was a dig on gays in the late 1700’s….learning is fun. We share some unconventional ways to theme a party including using Hickory Farms sausages for picture taking. Our gift exchange is the usual challenge of describing what we are doing for an audio only audience. Pumpkin has a 7 minute sex timer and Kalani is fascinated with the cats of instagram. It truly is a special holiday season in the Zen Tiki Lounge.
If you want the pictures below to make any sense we suggest clicking the play button above.

399.49 If The Blob Attacks, Order A Cape Cod Or Else!
Jul 22, 2018
Sunshine and Starshine are happy to cozy up in the Zen Tiki Lounge and enjoy our newest cocktail creation. Sunshine has crafted Tansuma, a bright citrus drink that is perfect to sip slowly in order to really enjoy the many flavors. Tansuma is a good example of know your audience when it comes to the drinks you serve. Pumpkin and Kalani do not appreciate stiffer libations like Starshine does. The Stroh used in this recipe gives a very distinct flavor that is reminiscent of rum raisin ice cream. Mix yours and listen to the show.
Above are the essential liquors needed to make Tansuma. Substitutions are not recommended. If you don't already have Stroh, Dry Curaçao, Campari and sweet Vermouth we don't know what you are waiting for.
Also discussed on this episode: A quick shout to everyone attending Tiki Kon not in its 16th year, the blob attacks our childhood memories, planning a birthday trip to Las Vegas in tiki style, the trouble with keeping orchids and cheap LED flame bulbs made in China. During our listener mail segment Sunshine gives a detailed answer for how you an best enjoy the all you can drink package on Princess cruises and also shares how to have "fresh" squeezed citrus juice all year long no matter where you live. Listen the full podcast above for lots more.

399.487 In The Pool Drunk With Susan Nelson And Bourbon
Jul 08, 2018
We like to please our listeners. A few requests rolled in recently to have another co host join us on the podcast. Someone from the tiki community who is also fun behind the microphone. Susan Nelson stepped up to the invite and joined Sunshine in the Zen Tiki Lounge for a fun hour of drinking and conversation. Susan is one of the few people besides Rory Snyder who has been to all 10 Tiki Caliente events, plus many many more around Southern California over the past 14 years. If you see Susan at an event, stop and say Aloha. Listen to the show to hear our chat about preferences in spirits, tiki travels and a few tips on keeping the party going without getting stopped by the barf fairy. Below left, Susan and Sunshine enjoy POOL DRINK. Below Center an assortment of fresh fruit with a pineapple salsa and Chile lime seasoning for dipping and eating. Below right, POOL DRINK and fresh fruit for dipping. Listen for more details on the drink and snacks.
After discovering that Gin is Susans least favorite booze, Sunshine brings out two of his favorites for her to try. Wouldn't you know it, Susan may like good Gin a little more than she though. Below left is St. Augustine Gin which was sent in by listener Frank. St. Augustine is distilled in Florida and is one of the most lime forward gins with many botanicals creating a complex and smooth gin. Below right is Calwise Big Sur Gin. This particular gin is very floral and medium sweet. Mix this one with limeade for a simple and quick drink or in your favorite gimlet or martini. We love them both. Explore beyond rum.
What happens when you gift someone a t shirt from Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club? Excitement and a lot of gratitude. At ZTL we love these shirts. Each and every month a new shirt with a fun design is released. you can subscribe and get them all or buy just one. Or, gift a subscription to your favorite tiki someone.
399.33 We Stumbled Into Last Rites, Then Fell In A Sand Trap And Ended Up At A Pearl Party
Jul 02, 2018
This episode of ZTL is very special. Pumpkin has blessed us with her "witty" form of conversation which is usually enjoyed in small doses such as this one hour podcast. The show begins with a perfectly appropriate summer libation, the Sand Trap. Although we tend to shy away from blended concoctions in the Zen Tiki Lounge, Sunshine has a version of a Piña colada that you may just find a bit more refreshing and balanced than the usual cruise ship and party bar offerings. Click the link and blend one or a pitcher for all your thirsty friends. After just one Sand Trap, Pumpkin becomes mentally stuck in her usual low brow rolling thought train that includes bedroom things she does not do, memories of being a mall rat and a strange rant about Yma Sumac running into a volcano.
Below are some of our favorite pics from a recent trip to Last Rites, San Francisco newest theme bar. Not tiki, but wonderful nonetheless. Last Rites fits into the speakeasy profile in that it is just a black door from the street front, opens later in the day (6pm) and you could easily walk right by if you didn't know where to look. Once inside your eyes need time to adjust to the dimness but your nose will immediately pick up citrus and other cocktail ingredients from the well stocked bar. Listen to the podcast for more details and a short recording from Last Rites while we visited with other new patrons. We give this place a MUST visit for anyone looking for good cocktails in a beautifully themed atmosphere.
Many years ago Sunshine read the first book by Everett Peacock in the Tiwaka series. Not much of a reader, Sunshine found that this fun and mythical beach or vacation book was perfect for a nice escape within an escape. If you read The Parrot Talks in Chocolate you will likely be reading the next two books soon. Plus, in book two includes several great cocktail recipes including our very own Coral Beauty. We highly recommend you buy or download the entire series....click here!
Pumpkin said it best on this episode of the podcast..."these shirts are so soft and comfortable I look forward to coming home from work and putting on something that fits me right and looks great on a girl". A new design every month delivered right to your mail box or buy just one. We love Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club!

398 The Reef Palm Springs Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary With Rory Snyder
Apr 21, 2018
At the top of this episode Sunshine Tiki begins sipping one of his favorite cocktails, the Tahitian Exotique (Below) and listening great exotica from Arthur Lyman. The drink and music are a quick way to set the mood and imagine you are in your very own dimly lit tiki bar. On this episode is an interview Rory Snyder from the Reef Palm Springs during the 1 year anniversary, listener mail, the spinning vinyl of Arthur Lyman: Aloha Amigo and select other exotica.
From Left: Andy Tolley, Kalani Tiki, Starshine Tiki, Sunshine Tiki, Rory Snyder, Marty Lush, Nicholas Correia
Within the historic Caliente Tropics resort is the Reef lounge and bar. Many decades ago this property was home to crooners such as Sinatra, Dean and Sammy. Although the faces have changed the atmosphere of sun and fun remains. While at the Reef we not only had terrific cocktails and conversation but there were plenty of tiki friends to talk to. The Reef has become one of those go to spots in Palm Springs for imbibing with locals and visitors and avoiding some of the overhyped resorts in town. Many nights include live music. The recently expanded food and cocktail menus offer more of what you want in a well done watering hole. Sunshine is particular to the fish and chips and many swear by the loco moco. Rory gives us some of the history of the Reef from the quick impromptu opening to the continuing transformation. Each time you visit the Reef you will likely notice more decor created by artists that Rory has been working with. Listen to the podcast for lots more from Rory Snyder, Marty Lush and more. Plus, find out what Yacht Rock really is!

397 Jackfruit And Tiki Drinks In The Bitter Harbor
Mar 23, 2018
Below left, Sunshine Tiki and Kalani enjoy Bitter Harbor in the Zen Tiki Lounge. Our newest tropical cocktail with fresh grapefruit and lemon juices along with several rums and bitters. We sported our green for St. Pattys day and sipped more than a few drinks. On the right we cooked up a pulled pork style slider made with jackfruit in a tangy BBQ sauce. This meat like alternative does have a slightly different texture than pulled pork, it is a little softer but not slimy or chewy. Cooked up and on a Kings Hawaiian role this stuff from The Jackfruit Company is a great bar snack that your vegan and meat eating friends will like.
We have tried the BBQ, Tex Mex and Teriyaki versions of this tropical meat substitute. BBQ and Tex Mex seem to be the best flavor and texture combinations. Vegan deliciousness.

396 I'll Take A Tiki Bar Over An Oscar Party Any Day
Mar 05, 2018
Its Oscar night and Sunshine wants nothing to do with it. Who needs to see a bunch of entitled people get dressed up and ramble on about all the "amazing" things they have done? Not us! Thats a perfect time for a quick podcast with lite commentary and lots of exotica. This show will best be enjoyed with a nice rum drink and a set of headphones. Sip a Rumhattan in your dimly lit corner and enjoy 45 minutes of vintage exotica recorded from vinyl. Featuring Arthur Lyman and Webley Edwards. BTW, Sunshine likes a little orange peel in his Manhattan and his Rumhattan even though it is not the standard garnish. Do not judge, but you may want to try it.

395 It Puts The Honey Cream Mix On The Skin
Feb 11, 2018
If you were on a deserted island with nothing but rum and Crystal Light, what would you do? You will have to listen to this episode to find out. But seriously, its a few days to Valentines as of recording this podcast. Our cocktail is reminiscent of a sweet tart candy with dark rum and the smoothness of honey cream mix. Pair this drink with a romantic dinner of chicken, fish or stir fry. We call it Mother of Pearl. Continue listening to the show and join Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani on a trip down Valentines memory lane. Or just keep in mind that your hosts enjoy a good drink and the inappropriate conversation that often comes afterwards. Enjoy!

394 Chloroform and Vegan Crab Rangoon Could Make This The Best Tiki Bar Ever!
Jan 30, 2018
Three hosts in the lounge for this episode of ZTL. Our drink is not one of our originals but comes from the Total Tiki app by Beachbum Berry. If you had only one app filled with tiki drinks, details instructions, history and an ingredient database...this is the one you want. Best Year was chosen as our drink because Sunshine vowed to try new things. So, mixing up a cocktail with blue curaçao (yuck) and Rose's lime juice (not fresh and so many preservatives) isn't usually on our list. But the recipe looked solid so we tried and. And, all three of us liked it. Listen to the show for much more detail including our t-shirt giveaway, upcoming events and more.
Vegan Seafood Rangoon!
1 package vegan shrimp or crab (VegeUSA is available in many specialty markets)
1 can water chestnuts drained and chopped fine
4 oz. vegan cream cheese or other soft cheese substitute
2 chopped scallions (just the greens)
1/4 tsp. black pepper
Salt to taste
18-24 wonton wrappers
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir well. Spoon 1 heaping teaspoon into each wonton wrapper. Seal wontons with water along the edges, folding over into triangles. Press edges of wontons very firmly to prevent leakage while frying. Heat vegetable oil to 350 degrees F and fry several pieces at a time until golden brown on each side. Remove from oil and lay to rest on paper lined plate. Serve with hot Chinese mustard, cocktail sauce or other dipping sauces.
Below are just some of the super fun greeting cards designed by Jason Bitner of bitnerdesign.com.
