ZfEL Ep. 38: How to Craft a Powerful Morning Ritual
Aug 04, 2016
This week is "Rise with the Sun" week on the ZfEL podcast and today's talk episode is all about crafting both a powerful and nourishing morning ritual (or morning routine).
I've tried countless different morning rituals over the past 5-6 years and have learned some really important things. Today, I'm going to share some of that with you.

This week is "Zen week" on the ZfEL podcast and this week's guided meditation is the traditional Zen meditation practice of Zazen (literally meaning "sitting/seated meditation" in Japanese).
I covered this meditation practice in a previous episode, however, I felt it could have been better and didn't express the nuances of the practice as well as it could have as compared to secular mindfulness or Vipassana mindfulness meditation practice, so I've decided to do a new (and much better) version.

This week's guided meditation is another unique practice- mindful smiling. A smile is a power symbol of joy and happiness. However, most don't know that smiling more than just a symbol (or the result of something), it's a powerful tool which can be used intentionally to make us happier and more at peace.
This week's guided meditation is all about using the power of intention and the natural effect of smiling with mindfulness.
Also, don't forget to check out this week's second episode, episode #34, which is a special guided meditation episode (yes, two this week!) to accompany my new Meditation for Everyday Life video series which was just released this week on how to create and stick to a strong and consistent daily meditation practice amid the chaos and busyness of everyday life. This guided meditation is a preview of my full Meditation for Everyday Life course program.

This week's guided meditation is the "everyday" informal practice of mindful walking. We've covered the formal practice of walking meditation before, where you walk back and forth or in a circle typically in your room or wherever you meditate (anywhere really) and generally at a very slow pace. Practicing mindful walking in daily life is similar, but still very different in important ways.
In this guided meditation, I'll take you through a practice you can do walking about in your daily life, from your car to work, work to your car, around the office, down the street, in a grocery store, and even out for a short walk to check your mail or take out the trash. The opportunities to use this practice are limitless and that's why it's a personal favorite.

This week's guided meditation is the fundamental practice of mindful breathing. When you hear "mindfulness meditation" (which typically refers to the secular practice of mindfulness), this is the practice that's being referred to (hence the slash in the title).
This week's guided meditation is the perfect guided meditation for those just beginning their practice or who have thought about trying meditation or mindfulness before but haven't gotten around to it.

ZfEL Ep. 26: The Story of Frederick (Or: Why Tomorrow is Too Late)
Apr 08, 2016
This week I highlight and remedy the dangers of busyness and the pursuit of a "cure" for the void we feel in our hearts. Today's talk is a reading from one of my favorite books, Thich Nhat Hanh's The Art of Power, about the story of Frederick. I won't spoil the story for you. Suffice it to say, the true story of Frederick is a powerful message that everyone needs to hear. I also give my commentary after reading and elaborate on the significance of the story.
Also, make sure to listen to this week's guided meditation, ZfEL #27: Guided Meditation - Mindful Driving, a powerful mindfulness practice for turning a typically mindless autopilot activity into an opportunity for peace and mindfulness.

This week's guided meditation is mindful cleaning, a powerful mindfulness practice that takes a typically boring and mundane activity and turns it into something nourishing and delightful.
Mindful cleaning can be done while sweeping, mopping, dusting, scrubbing the bathroom, washing the dishes, or while doing anything else. This is a unique practice in that cleaning is typically (for most of us, at least) one of the most boring and mundane activities of our life, so to take such an activity and transform it into an enjoyable practice can be quite nourishing.

This week's guided meditation is the formal version of the cornerstone mindfulness practice of mindful walking (also called walking meditation), which is great when paired after your formal sitting meditation practice.
Mindful walking is one of the primary mindfulness practices and for good reason. Mindful walking is something we can do throughout each and every day as well as in a more formal setting (today's version). To walk mindfully is to touch the peace of the present moment with each step. It's a powerful practice and a personal favorite, so I'm happy to be covering it this week.
Mindful walking, or walking meditation, is the practice of either counting one's steps or being mindful of the rising, swinging, and placing down of each step. As this guided meditation is on more of the formal practice, I'll be guiding by counting the steps (with plans to do more informal version of the meditation where you'll follow your steps in the near future).

This week's guided meditation is A Mindful Welcome and it's about welcoming difficult thoughts, emotions, and sensations with the healing energy of mindfulness.
The way we typically approach our lives, we push away or bottle down our difficulties in order to avoid the pain and suffering involved with them. But that just leads to more pain and suffering. A Mindful Welcome is about the fundamental shift from "hostile enemy" to "welcoming friend" we must make to begin the path of healing.

This week's guided meditation is Loving-Kindness Meditation. Loving-kindness meditation is the traditional Buddhist meditation practice of cultivating positive feelings and well-wishes for all beings. I've found it personally to be one of the most powerful meditation techniques, especially in combination with mindfulness practice.

ZfEL Ep. 14: How to Adapt to Life’s Curveballs and Go with the Flow
Jan 27, 2016
This week I'm giving a little preview of one of the 4 major principles from my upcoming book, This Moment: How to Live Fully and Freely in the Present Moment. Today I talk about living naturally, within that specifically the principle of friction, or resistance. It's the understanding that our resistance to what goes on in our life causes friction. And it's this friction which causes much of our suffering.
I open up about my own life to give a clear example of the principle at work, plus I do a reading of a previous article that perfectly fits the theme, which I also chose to include in the book.
Also, make sure to listen to this week's guided meditation, which is ZfEL #15: Healing Through Understanding, a very active meditation (or contemplation or sorts) which has a remarkable ability at healing internal wounds caused by conflicts with others.

ZfEL Ep. 9: Guided Meditation - Zazen (The Zen Sitting Practice of Mindfulness Meditation)
Jan 07, 2016
This is meditation week on the ZfEL podcast. I've really enjoyed recording both this week's full episode and guided meditation episode and I hope you get a lot out of them. Today I'm covering zazen, the Zen practice of sitting meditation.
This is the basic meditation form I typically write about on the blog being that I essentially "grew up" in Zen. At its heart, it's just a simple mindfulness of breath meditation. If you're new to meditation, know that zazen is a great beginner practice for this very reason. It's what I practice each and every day.

ZfEL Ep. 8: How to Create a Home Meditation Practice
Jan 06, 2016
This is meditation week on the ZfEL podcast. Today I cover everything you need to know to create your home meditation practice including the 5 steps to making meditation a daily habit and the 5 major resources you should utilize to do so.
Meditation is the foundation of a strong daily mindfulness practice and it's the first of the 7 keys I covered in last week's episode How to Make Mindfulness a Way of Life for that very reason, so I'm excited to cover it this week on the podcast.
To go along with episode #8, episode #9 and this week's guided meditation (if you haven't heard about the second weekly ZfEL segment yet, read here) is zazen, or the Zen practice of sitting meditation (mindfulness meditation). My hope is that this week serves you and others as a complete audio resource for beginning your home meditation practice.

Dec 09, 2015
This week's episode is all about cleansing the mind and nourishing wholesome seeds in our day-to-day life. It's the process of demoting, or turning away from, unwholesome seeds and watering or promoting wholesome ones in an effort to provide ourselves with the proper nourishment for our heart and mind.
I talk about the 6 "channels" with which we absorb nutriment, the Buddha's 4 Nutriments, what is mindful consumption, and how to water wholesome seeds and manage unwholesome seeds in our everyday life. This episode is filled with practical and easy-to-apply advice for deepening your daily practice and finding greater peace and joy in your day-to-day life.
Simplifying the process: What is the 1 thing you can do right now for each category?
Cleansing the mind/4 Nutriments exercises:
Edible food- Be mindful of your relationship with food. Do you eat with moderation? Is it difficult to control your cravings? Also: take 1-2 minutes before each meal to contemplate on the origin and history of the food in front of you.
Sense food 1 (associations)- Who are the top 5-10 people you're around the most? Do any of those people water negative seeds in you on a consistent basis? Should you distance yourself from that person?
Sense food 2 & 3 (read + watch + listen)- Read: blogs, magazines, news online, and eBooks (plus physical books and magazines). Watch: online videos (YouTube, etc.), T.V., movies. Listen:music, radio news & shows, podcasts, audio files/books. Do for each: What do you consume on a regular basis? Are these watering wholesome or unwholesome seeds in me? Do this for each area.
Volitions- What is my major volition? Is it unwholesome/wholesome? What is it driven by? What are my core values? Be mindful
Consciousness- Establish a daily mindfulness and meditation practice. My second book, Zen for Everyday Life, is all about this. For more information, click here.

ZfEL Ep. 2: How to Live as If You're Going to Die
Dec 02, 2015
This week's episode is all about realizing the beauty of this life and cultivating a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation.
I lead off with a very interesting story about a modern-day yogi, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher by the name of Mingyur Rinpoche, and we talk about a simple daily practice suggested by the Buddha which can help us deepen our appreciation for life by bringing us face-to-face with the truth of impermanence.

ZfEL Ep. 1: How to Be Yourself in Every Moment: Expressing Your Authentic Self, Realizing Your True Nature, and Living with No Regrets
Nov 26, 2015
For many of us, they are the hardest things we will ever do: to face the fear of what others think of us, to work through the inner dialogue that keeps us questioning our self-worth and perpetuating the feeling of voidness (something is missing) and to push further to the deepest reaches of spiritual practice to reunite with, and fully express, our true nature.
In this very first episode of the Zen for Everyday Life podcast I shed light on each of these challenges, talk about the common thread that ties them all together, and cover the key practices to begin working through them.
