    You’re Making It Worse

Although performing stand-up comedy was what initially united Eliot, Brent, and H. Alan over 10 years ago, it’s their openness (and sense of humor) about feeling totally lost and disconnected from the gay community that’s truly bonded them. On YMIW, Eliot, Brent and H. Alan get down and dirty, exploring the good, bad, and ugly tropes of contemporary gay life, often the stuff that no one — especially straight people — discuss for fear of being labeled homophobic. (Don’t worry. They’ll do that for you.) Each episode features a special guest -- comedians, humorists, musicians, influencers, film/TV writers, journalists, politicians, etc. – as well as allies, enemies, and acquaintances from all backgrounds and professions, not just those in the public eye. And as white, urban-dwelling gay dudes in their thirties, Eliot, Brent and H. Alan check their own privilege at the door, eager to instead explore what life looks for those not afforded the same concessions.

Is the idea of "gay death at 30" still...funny? Was it ever? Now what if it's a FUNERAL-THEMED 30th birthday party? (True story!) Then, gay journalist Ramin Setoodeh talks about the queer appeal of The View as revealed in his new expose, Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of The View. And Brent, Eliot and H. Alan wonder if the state of social media, specifically the sexualization of Instagram, has made Grindr...tame?

Brandy Barber and Lyle Friedman May 09, 2019
    Show notes

Did you know that, in 29 states, you can get fired for being gay? Or that you could be denied housing? It's true! Federally speaking, sexual orientation discrimination IS STILL A THING! UGH and WHY? Then, writer/actresses Brandy Barber and Lyle Friedman join Brent, Eliot and H. Alan to talk about their VERY different, respective experiences as the older sisters to gay brothers. And when it comes to getting boozed up, the guys each talk their personal drink of choice, including the type of wine that doesn't sit right on a "Jewish stomach."

    John Polly May 02, 2019
    Show notes

Can toxic masculinity be gay? Inspired by Gabe's (John Cameron Mitchell) cruel mistreatment of his fat employee Annie (Aidy Bryant) on the show Shrill, the guys discuss how "toxic gay masculinity" boils down to two words: diet culture. Then, longtime RuPaul's Drag Race writer/producer/podcaster John Polly joins Brent, Eliot and H. Alan to take a deep dive into everything Drag Race. And after former Republican Illinois representative and Downton Abbey fanboy Aaron Schock is caught hooking up with another dude at Coachella, his aggressively anti-gay record forces the guys to ask if there is anyone more deserved of this very podcast's title (and yes, that includes Jussie).

Congrats to Lori Lightfoot, the first Black, lesbian mayor of Chicago and the guys' new fave. Then, Mo Welch, comedian, illustrator and author of How to Die Alone, joins Brent, Eliot and H. And the guys delve into Brent's historic distrust of gay men in groups, ESPECIALLY the brunch crowd.

    Guillermo Diaz Apr 18, 2019

Is America ready for its first gay president and is "Mayor Pete" Buttigieg the guy for the job? Also, ISN'T HE DREAMY? Then, actor Guillermo Diaz (of Scandal, Girls, and the Britney Spears video for "I Wanna Go") joins Brent, Eliot and H. Alan to talk about playing drag queens and thugs, getting screwed over by GLAAD, and he even shows the guys his cock ring! No, seriously! Right in the studio! And finally, from softball to bowling to dodgeball to poker, find out which gay intramural leagues your hosts have joined by choice for some reason.

    Kevin Allison Apr 11, 2019
    Show notes

Did Elisabeth Hasselbeck overreact when she "began to pray" after Rosie O'Donnell insinuated she was gay in a new book about their time together on The View? Then, The Statealumnus and host of the RISK! podcast, Kevin Allison, illuminates Brent, Eliot and H. Alan with his (warning!) graphic stories about life in the kink lane, from being physically branded to tickle fetishes to embracing sexual preferences in the era of #metoo. And finally, who kissed a girl and he liked it? The guys talk first loves, including Eliot's whirlwind first grade romance that he insists was, indeed, "sexual in nature." We report, YOU decide.

    Emily Heller Apr 04, 2019
    Show notes

This week, the guys talk about gays being disqualified from marching in parades: homophobic gaslighting or blessing in disguise? Then, comic and Barry writer Emily Heller talks about income inequality, the male gaze, and the general consensus that men are terrible. And hear Brent, Eliot and H. Alan give their list of "deep cut" hot guys, the heartthrobs who otherwise fly under the radar, from Shawn Wayans and James Gandolfin to Kel (of "Kenan And") and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California Goodwin Liu. And is Jaleel White the great unifier here? Listen and find out.

    Dan Black Mar 28, 2019
    Show notes

This week, the guys have a ~light chat~ about Brent's all-time favorite, number one homophobe: Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church whose members planned to protest transgender delegate Danica Roem at the Virginia State Capitol. Then, wrestling-obsessed, heterosexual comedian Dan Black (of the podcast Comedians of Wrestling) joins Brent, Eliot and H. Alan to debate the homoeroticism of waxed, spray tanned, oiled-up grown men rolling around on the floor together. And finally, if a thirsty #Instagay like Max Emerson holds a sign over his genitals that reads "TRANS LIVES MATTER," is that activism or another depraved bid for attention to fill the void in his soul? (It's that.) Plus, a very special announcement from Brent that should make our theatergoing fans VERY happy.

This week, the guys first talk about a Rider University dean who resigned in counter-protest of her school's decision to exclude a Chik Fil-A franchise on campus because of their anti-LGBT history, which she considered an assault on her Christian values LOLOL. Then, Brent, Eliot and H. Alan are joined by comedian Sydnee Washington for a wide-ranging conversation covering, among other things, breast implants, coming out on Facebook, and why Crumbs cupcakes were straight up bullshit. And finally, the guys tackle the whole Jussie Smolett thing, including exactly why H. Alan hated him before everybody else did!

First, the guys talk about a Virginia teacher who sued her school district after she was told to dress "less flamboyantly" and "more feminine," which is odd considering her personal style brings to mind, as Brent suggests, the ICONIC Honey I Shrunk The Kids star Rick Moranis. Then, The Gilmore Guys co-hosts Demi Adejuyigbe and Kevin Porter tell the guys about their massively popular podcast and whether or not life in Stars Hollow had queer appeal. And finally, Brent, Eliot and H. Alan explain their "going out" routines, including who douses himself cologne, who tweezes his eyebrows, and who's thrown in the towel when it comes to deodorant.
