Project LifeSaver Feb 17, 2025

The York County Sheriff’s Office is excited to announce its Nationwide Project Lifesaver Program involvement. The Program will be offered free of charge to York County residents who are caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's Disease, autism, Down Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury, or other conditions that make them likely to wander away from caregivers.

Project Lifesaver is a rapid response program that uses radio frequency tracking technology designed to locate at-risk individuals who suffer from cognitive impairment issues who may wander away from their caregivers and become lost.

Those cognitive issues may include Alzheimer’s, Autism, and Down Syndrome.

YCSO Behind the Badge - Cold Case: Hispanic John Doe Nov 05, 2021

On October 30, 2005 two hunters scouting a place to hunt off Pleasant Road and Vista Road in Fort Mill discovered the skeletal remains of a person buried in shallow grave. The person was deliberately covered with tree branches and had been there about a year. Forensic examination found that the person was a Hispanic man possibly from Guatemala. He had defensive cuts on the arm, and neck area. Sixteen years later YCSO detectives are still trying to solve this cold case.

Watts was finally arrested at a Rock Hill apartment off Riverview Road on Feb. 18 after a DNA match identified him. She is believed to of been traveling to Miami, Florida, at the time of her disappearance.

YCSO Behind the Badge - The 1989 Cold Case Murder of Gene Campbell Feb 19, 2021

Gene Campbell operated a wrecker service in Rock Hill, SC and disappeared while on a service call. His body was later located on February, 21st 1989, on Winter Road off Neely's Creek Rd in the Lesslie/Catawba area of York County, six days after he was reported missing. Campbell had been shot to death and there had been an attempt to cover his body with tree limbs and pine needles. Campbell was 55-years-old at the time.

Penninger was a local Black Smith and the local law enforcement officer. Frank and Mills Moore were served with a warrant for disorderly conduct by Penninger and before they were taken into custody they attacked and shot Penninger. 88 Years ago on July 17th 1932 – Tragedy struck the York County Sheriff’s Office or at that time the York County Rural Police

Rural Police Officer Elliott Harris was shot and killed after he stopped a man and his wife in their car on Highway 21 near Fort Mill and attempted to arrest the man for reckless driving.
