    Worst Show Ever

Permatouring bassist C.J. Boyd meets up with fellow musicians while on the road to ask them about the worst shows they’ve played. Ranging from the hilarious to positively tragic, these stories give a glimpse into how things can go horribly wrong while just trying to play music for people.

    Latest Episodes:
35 Jenny Wood (Team Tremolo) @ ICT Fest in Wichita, KS (9/8/18) Apr 10, 2019
    Show notes

Jenny Wood tells her story of a show that paid well, but sucked the soul out of her. We also discus how helpful random men at shows have been, going so far as to insist on writing her lyrics and give unsolicited business advice.

34 Haydeé Jiménez (Hidhawk) @ Net Net in Tijuana, BC, Mexico (8/3/18) Apr 03, 2019
    Show notes

Haydeé Jiménez and I discuss her shittiest show, which was her very first show. And since this was my first episode in the Mexican border town of Tijuana, and since Haydeé runs an organization called "Borderland Noise", we got into issues of crossing borders in more ways than one.

33 Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy) @ his home in Louisville, KY (12/10/18) Mar 27, 2019
    Show notes

One of our generation's consummate songwriters tells a story of dishonesty and the aggravating effects it can have on tour. We explore the different ways dishonesty manifests in the music industry, and what musicians do to avoid it.

32 Emily Cross (Cross Record) & Sarah Gautier (Thor & Friends) @ Pease District Park in Austin, TX (2/19/18) Mar 20, 2019
    Show notes

In one of the first episodes recorded (before I learned the importance of a windscreen for recording outside), I met up with Emily Cross and Sarah Gautier in a lovely Austin park where I probed them for stories of awful shows. Tales of sexism, rudeness, and inept soundguys are among the highlights.

31 Kyle Field (Little Wings) @ Sycamore Cove in Venture County, CA (8/9/18) Mar 13, 2019
    Show notes

Kyle Field (aka Little Wings) shares this hilarious adventure of a tale as we perch on a cliff above the gorgeous roaring sea in California. He recounts the days when his "ban the plan" motto got him into considerable trouble, as well as providing wonderful stories.

30 Feelgood (Feelgood & Friends) @ his home in Lompoc, CA (8/9/18) Mar 06, 2019
    Show notes

Feelgood played bass in a band with my dad before I was born. And when I started playing bass as a teenager, Feelgood would sometimes come over and show me how to play my favorite Pearl Jam and Green Day songs on the bass. He's been a gigging musician since the 60's, and continues to this day. For all those reasons, this episode is very special to me, and stands out among the rest has having a particular value to it. Nobody else on this show has known me since I was a baby, much less knew my folks before I was even in the picture. That said, some of what Feelgood told me during our conversation blew my mind—particularly the story he tells towards the end of the episode. EDIT: After publishing the episode, my mom commented on a story I shared from my childhood, and told me how she remembered it differently. We occasionally disagree about stories from that long ago, but in this case, I trust her memory more than mine. I say here that a little boy called my sister a racial slur, and that my mom went to report this behaviour to his father, who didn't find it problematic at all. As my mom recalls, that was no the sequence of events. In fact, the dad told his kids they weren't to play with us anymore because we were N*****s, particularly my little sister who is darker than me, though we're both mixed. My sister was 5 years old. Anyway, just wanted to set the record straight. My mom did come very close to whooping that dad's ass, but restrained herself. She mentions this was aided by the fact that when she went to talk to him, he kept the screen door between them and didn't leave his house. I fucking love my mom.

29 Cecilia McKinnon (Star Canyon) & Jazmyn Crosby (Glitter Vomit) @ Goldhaus in Albuquerque, NM (3/3/18) Feb 27, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, we start by hearing about some of Cecilia's bummer shows in the kitchen of the Goldhaus, a mainstay of the house show scene in Albuquerque, when an interruption requires us to move the episode to a local restaurant to hear Jazmyn's stories.

28 Jesse Elliott (These United States) @ The Music District in Fort Collins, CO (3/8/18) Feb 20, 2019
    Show notes

Jesse Elliott of These United States shares a story from a Boise show that exemplifies what he calls "the sine wave life" of very high highs followed by very low lows while on tour. As someone who has toured extensively, it was great to hear about that roller coaster of experiences from this thoughtful friend.

27 Hoja Lopez (Your Bones) @ her apartment in Chicago, IL (9/24/18) Feb 13, 2019
    Show notes

While I primarily know Hoja Lopez as an amazing vocalist and musician, her pick for worst show ever comes from an improv comedy gig she had in the suburbs of Houston. The conversation that follows is a continuation of the previous episode, in a completely different context and tone, but with some interesting overlap.

26 Puma Simone @ The Public Library in New Haven, CT (10/25/18) Feb 06, 2019
    Show notes

Rapper Puma Simone and I met up at the New Haven Public Library to talk about the balance between spontaneity and preparedness, as well as the parallels between hip hop and comedy.
