    Worst Show Ever

Permatouring bassist C.J. Boyd meets up with fellow musicians while on the road to ask them about the worst shows they’ve played. Ranging from the hilarious to positively tragic, these stories give a glimpse into how things can go horribly wrong while just trying to play music for people.

45 Sabrina Rush (State Champion) & Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) @ Bruce's apartment in Chicago, IL (9/24/18) Jun 19, 2019
    Show notes

Both Sabrina Rush & Bruce Lamont are wonderful fixtures of the Chicago music scene and beyond, each donning several different hats over expansive careers. We get into some of their wild stories as touring musicians, as well as some stories coming from their experiences in administrative roles at Cropped Out and Pitchfork respectively.

44 Safa Shokrai (The Drift) @ his house in Pinole, CA (8/19/18) Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

To be filed in the "the show was great, but after the show was the worst" category, Safa tells a story from a European tour that The Drift did with Mono, involving an awkward encounter with a host.

43 Sphie Holman @ Alki Beach in West Seattle, WA (4/29/18) Jun 05, 2019
    Show notes

Sphie Holman and I take a walk down Alki Beach and talk about her worst show, which took place in a church. This sparks a discussion weaving in between bad shows, religion, and coming of age.

42 Abi Wilenski (Hollis Peach) @ her house in Ashland, OR (5/28/18) May 29, 2019
    Show notes

Violinist Abi Wilenski recounts the tale of a tour in which she wasn't listened to, while adjusting for the fact that her perspective has changed a great deal since then. (Note: Abi sometimes says "normal" while making finger quotes when referring to hetero-normative expectations. Since you can't see said finger quotes, she asked me to mention them in this description so that no one thinks she actually thinks of hetero-normativity as normal per se.)

41 Rachel Overby (Bitch Boys) & Mary Samuel @ Point Defiance Marina in Tacoma, WA (5/6/18) May 22, 2019
    Show notes

A great example of what happens when you record a podcast in public spaces, this episode contains perhaps my favorite moment of well-timed irony. Rachel Overby is in the middle of sharing a story about rude dudes yelling dumb shit at the her all female band (Bitch Boys) while they're on stage, and from out of nowhere a man interrupts us, realizes we're recording a podcast, and takes it upon himself to perform for our audience. Is it kismet? Or just entitlement? You decide.

40 Pig Snout @ their house in Tacoma, WA (5/10/18) May 15, 2019
    Show notes

Pig Snout is a band consisting of my long time Tacoma buddy Justin Tamminga and his children, Dahlia and Lucien. At the time of this recording, Dahlia was 10 years old and Lucien was 13. Obviously it's pretty rare kids this young start a band with their dad, but what I most love about talking them about their worst show is the total lack of concern around criticizing hallowed musical institutions (like the Rialto Theater). And they don't care about sounding cool or impressive. They just like what they like and don’t hesitate to let it be known. Their honesty and humor was a treat, and I'm grateful to their musical papa for exposing them to music at such an early age.

39 Victor Villarreal (Cap'n Jazz) @ his home in Barrington, IL (9/22/18) May 08, 2019
    Show notes

Vic is a buddy who has been touring for years and years in bands like Joan of Arc, Cap'n Jazz, and Owls. But his story comes from his first tour playing his solo music. It gets pretty gnarly, so hold on tight.

    38 Ramakhandra @ Chreehouse in Denver, CO (9/3/18) May 01, 2019
    Show notes

With three of the four members of Ramakhandra present, we run the full gamut of stories from the sad to the hilarious, and sometimes both at the same time. They were kind enough to share not only their worst show as a band, but each of their worst shows from before they joined forces.

37 Ambrosia Bardos (Morher) @ Five Points Diner in Seattle, WA (4/5/18) Apr 24, 2019
    Show notes

My dear friend Ambrosia (aka Amnesia) joins me at this Seattle diner to talk about dudes who take up more than their share of space. We also get into some stories of older relatives coming to shows and witnessing experimental performances they cannot unsee.

36 Shane DeLeon (Miss Massive Snowflake) at Mary's house in Billings, MT (3/9/18) Apr 17, 2019
    Show notes

Such a pleasure to sit down with fellow bona fide road dog, Shane DeLeon of Miss Massive Snowflake. Shane and I met on a ship in Germany, and have crossed paths in Portland and LA over the years, but here we met up in his hometown of Billings, Montana to discus his worst show, and much of the life philosophy that has kept him on the road for months and years at a time. His partner Mary also chimes in to give another perspective.
