Power Mentoring Relationships For Women: Dr. Ellen Ensher Feb 13, 2014
    Show notes

What do Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Investments and Mary Barra president of General Motors, all have in common? Like most successful women leaders, they all have mentors and are mentoring others... Power mentoring has been a hot topic of discussion for a lot of years, but most of us know that finding one mentor can be a real challenge – especially finding another woman to mentor us – so looking for more than one seems like a daunting task. On her website, Ellen Ensher uses an old Girl Scouts' song to illustrate one of the ideas behind multiple mentors: "Make new friends, keep the old; new is silver, old is gold." She advises having 10 to 12 mentors with differing areas of expertise and she convincingly describes the benefits you'll receive from this new way of seeking help. In this power mentoring interview with Sabrina Braham MA MFT PCC, Dr. Ensher explains mentor-protégé relationships in an easily understandable and fun way, using personal stories about real people. She's spent the past 20 years studying mentor-protégé relationships, participating in them and teaching her students how they work and why. She'll open your eyes to this novel way to advance your career on the fast track. Ellen Ensher, Ph.D. Your Guide to Power Mentoring Since 2000, Dr. Ellen Ensher's students at Loyola Marymount University have consistently rated her among the top five percent of business professors at the school. Her established expertise in mentoring programs and her tested career advice make her a frequent key note speaker and workshop leader for conferences, as well as public and private organizations throughout the world. Frequently quoted in the media, Dr. Ensher has published over 40 articles/book chapters and has made over 100 professional presentations. She's the co-author, with Susan Murphy, of Power Mentoring: How Successful Mentors and Protégés Get the Most Out of Their Relationships, for which the authors interviewed 50 pairs of mentors and protégés from the fields of politics, technology and entertainment. Advance Your Career: The Importance of Power Mentoring Some of the topics executive business coach Sabrina Braham and power mentoring expert Ellen Ensher will talk about in this women’s leadership podcast include: The theory behind Power Mentoring and why younger people are benefitting from adopting the practice The benefits—one of which is increased income— are realized by those in power mentoring relationships How Ellen was mentored by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and author of Lean In. Although they've never met—and how you can do the same thing The questions to ask yourself when looking for power mentors and the questions to ask potential mentors when you find them Why protégés should also serve as mentors and how to go about it What a "manager" can add to the mentor-protégé relationship The three major reasons people mentor others and the value they receive from doing it Why some formal company mentoring programs fail and how they can be fixed The perks you'll receive when your mentor-protégé relationship includes tests and challenges How to utilize your mentors to help you get seated on corporate boards. How do they create compelling visions that shape a radically different future? What can you do, no matter what your job title is, to develop a vibrant culture and inspired employees? Listen to this thought provoking interview to find out. Are You Willing to Change Your Corporate Culture? Many businesses resist change… "We have a company that works, producing products the public wants and buys. Why mess with a good thing?" Do you believe that? Ask Kodak about rejecting the change to digital. Our world changes daily and successful businesses change with it. Beyond simple product changes, today's forward-looking enterprise has to demonstrate, at the very least, innovation, an environmental consciousness, globalization and stability. This means they must change their corporate culture. There can be no transformational change unless we look at things differently. It is the only road to sustainability and success. The best news is that the power to effect this change lies in each of us. Executive business coach Sabrina Braham and author Diana Rivenburgh share insights and actionable tips women (and men too) can use to improve your corporate culture and bottom line. Diana Rivenburgh – Corporate Culture Expert Author Diana Rivenburgh prominently displays her company's mission statement: "… to leverage the tremendous power of sustainability for client prosperity and a better world." With over 25 years experience in organizational and leadership development, change, consulting and strategy creation, she held several corporate executive leadership positions before starting her own business. For her new book, The New Corporate Facts of Life: Rethink Your Business to Transform Today's Challenges into Tomorrow's Profits, Diana spoke to 100 leaders of large and small companies, in different sectors and countries, with diverse endeavors. Each talked to her about their perspective on what was important to their industries or organizations and what they saw as essential to success in the years ahead. Entrepreneurial Thinking to Help Women’s Careers and Business Nov 13, 2013
    Show notes

A NEW LIGHT ON OLD WAYS OF ENTREPRENEURIAL THINKING It used to be joked that an entrepreneur was "someone who hadn't found a job yet." That definition wasn't always accurate then, but today it's a ridiculous notion. More and more we are becoming an entrepreneurial culture—better trained, better able to take an idea, assemble and lead a team to make it happen, and finally achieve what may have once seemed an impossible goal. We're no longer content to sit back and watch others pursue their dreams. We want to push up our sleeves and get into the action. The question is: How do we do it? Bill Schley, the author of The Unstoppables: Tapping Your Entrepreneurial Power, says, "The entrepreneurs will make the jobs, invent the industries and populate the new companies that will win the war for the economic future . . . we need millions more." His message is that you can be one of those millions of entrepreneurs. He gives you the entrepreneurial thinking rules along with new ways of looking at how you see yourself and your place in business. Pay attention and you'll be right at home in your new endeavor. His sources are his own experiences and those of other successful entrepreneurs, along with the secrets of elite military forces for whom success is the only option. When this podcast is over, you'll look at your goals and how to attain them in a new light. It's an Aha! moment you can't afford to miss. BILL SCHLEY KNOWS HIS STUFF! No one understands what makes an entrepreneur tick better than another entrepreneur. Throughout his career, Bill Schley has successfully "done it on his own." An award-winning branding expert, author and speaker, Bill is president and co-founder of BrandTeamSix and is recognized as the creator of the Dominant Selling Idea for successful companies around the world. Before opening the first of his own companies, Bill was a copywriter for Ted Bates Advertising Agency, so it was a natural transition to write books based on his business experience. His first three best-sellers — Power of 10, Why Johnny Can't Brand, and The Micro-Script Rules — have now been joined by his latest book, The UnStoppables: Tapping Your Entrepreneurial Power. In it he shows how an unlikely team – the chairman of a multi-billion dollar tech company, a few Navy SEALs, some members of the Israeli Special Forces and a branding expert – came together to identify the central core of entrepreneurship. This is entrepreneurial thinking at it's best to help women advance their career and excel in business. BILL SCHLEY EXPLAINS HOW WOMEN CAN BE SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS In this episode of Women's Leadership Success Radio, executive business coach Sabrina Braham and author Bill Schley discuss a wide-range of entrepreneurial thinking topics covered in his book, The Unstoppables, including: The emotional mechanics essential to entrepreneurship and branding. The four-letter word Navy SEALs fight against when they are in difficult situations — and how to keep that word from defeating you. The difference between how successful Navy SEALs function and the way most entrepreneurs operate. A different definition of "failure" that's been recognized and utilized by the most successful entrepreneurs throughout history. Three ways to get motivated and moving toward your goal—and how to keep the momentum going. The definition of "Accelerated Proficiency," which is vital not only to your success, but ultimately to the success of the entire business sector. The four basic questions you must answer if you want to turn your idea into a great brand. The necessity of being "famous"—and the "Unstoppable Rules" you can follow to become both famous and successful. The three components women have that makes them better entrepreneurs and team builders than most men! Women are often at a disadvantage when it comes to getting ahead in their career & business. The Secret Thoughts of Successful Businesswomen – Dr. Valerie Young Oct 10, 2013
    Show notes

Successful Businesswomen or Imposters? Whether you were given a promotion or are in a new job or have returned to the work force after a few years at home waiting for the kids to go to school, you’ve probably felt as if it’s all a bit overwhelming. You may think you’re not really as accomplished as your colleagues believe. You pat yourself on the back for fooling everyone into thinking you really know what you’re doing. Others may view you as an articulate, experienced and highly successful businesswoman, but you look in the mirror and see an actress playing a part. It’s called the Imposter Syndrome and a majority of women, at every level, are victims. Perhaps it’s because we were raised to turn away from praise. It wasn’t “ladylike” to acknowledge our accomplishments. Maybe our mother or grandmother told us boys wouldn’t like us if we were too smart. It could be that someone laughed when we tried something difficult and failed. Or even worse, ridiculed us when we succeeded. Whatever the cause, our secret feeling of “I’m not good enough” is holding us back. The cure comes from identifying the Imposter Syndrome and working to overcome it. That’s what we’ll learn to do in this podcast. Valerie Yound Learned from Experience Valerie Young realized she was a victim of the Imposter Syndrome when she was in graduate school in the 1980s. It became the center of her research, the subject of her doctorate dissertation and the focal point of her career. Now she has written The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women: Why Capable People Suffer from the Impostor Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of It. Published by Random House, it’s currently being reprinted in three languages. Besides her work as seen at ImpostorSyndrome.com, Valerie is also the founder and “Dreamer in Residence” at ChangingCourse.com where over 23,000 people around the world read her newsletter that teaches how to make a living doing what you love. She has spoken at over 60 prestigious colleges and universities and addressed audiences at some of the nation’s largest companies and associations. Her career-related tips have been printed in publications around the world. Valerie Young Shows Women the Way to Career and Business Success Executive business coach Sabrina Braham & author Valerie Young discuss: What the Imposter Syndrome is and who is most likely to suffer from it. The different imposter behaviors that are seen in even the most successful businesswomen — and ways can we can change them. The different kinds of confident behavior as outlined in Valerie’s “Confidence Workbook.” How a simple definition of fear can help overcome panic when faced with speaking to an audience. Ways we can follow the example of other successful businesswomen by daring to step outside the box and do something unexpected. Why women internalize our chronic self-doubt much more often than men. (Be sure to listen for the L’Oreal story!) Why it can be healing to remember the old adage: Fake It Till You Make It! The importance of “reframing” and “normalizing” to overcome feelings of inadequacy.
