    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Angel and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Angel's view point on working hard to get where we want to be. As Angel stated, "the more you put in the more you get out". This statement is so true and applies over various areas of life, from business to relationships to exercise just to name a few. Working hard has both physical and mental benefits for those that choose to go the extra mile. Some of the mental benefits include mental toughness, self-discipline, and hyper focus. Additionally, when we work hard we also encourage others to do the same, leading to more goals being reached and more dreams being attained. A quote by Thomas Edison reads, "There is no substitute for hard work."

I admire Angel's ability to balance her personal and professional life by engaging her children in her business ventures. Many people in Angel's situation would count themselves out due to having five children and not being able to take the time necessary to reach their dreams. Angel has figured out a way to be both a great business woman and a great mom at the same time, which is inspiring. By doing this Angel is instilling great leadership qualities in her children as well as lightening her workload, which is a WIN-WIN. As Angel suggested, we should utilize our internal resources before seeking external help.

I can relate to Angel's experience of making mistakes and doing things she should not have out of impulse, as I have and sometimes still experience the same. Controlling my impulses is a battle of mine that I face, sometimes on a daily basis. Mastering self-control is how we master controlling our impulses, and with effort it can be achieved. Learning to hold strong to our big goals, will help us to stay grounded when faced with temptation. A quote by Thomas Jefferson reads, "Don't bite at the bait of pleasure until you know there is no hook beneath it."

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Angel mentioned the importance of knowing and playing our position to get the best out of our experiences. I agree with this and definitely need to remind myself of this, especially when it comes to working in Corporate. I can honestly say I am not the happiest with my work-life; however, I cannot let this deter me from playing my position accordingly.

I will make it my business to respect all of my positions and figure out how to play them to the benefit of myself and those around me, as I aim to be successful in all I do and this is what is required to do so.

A quote by Colin Powell reads, "Don't let your ego get too close to your position, so that if your position gets shot down, your ego doesn't go with it".

    Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge

My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. I know it's hard to absorb too much information at one time and it's even harder to try and implement too many changes at once. When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result. I challenge you to do the same! If you decide to take me up on my challenge I would love to know about your key take way. S4 E10: Mental Health & Mindset Matter with Terri Floyd Jul 03, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 10! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Terri Floyd founder of TF Solutions Center, LLC. Terri Floyd is an Adjunct Professor, Coach, and Empowerment Speaker who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Terri Floyd's take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of collaboration, growing others via delegation, and maintaining a work/life balance.

    Terri Floyd Bio

Terri Floyd, MS a Little Rock native, wears many hats. She is a Mother, Empowerment Speaker & Coach, Change Agent, Business Owner, and Servant to name a few. She's a graduate of Philander Smith College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, University of Arkansas Little Rock with a Post Graduate Certificate in Gerontology (Aging Studies) and a Master of Science degree in Health Sciences with an emphasis in Health Education and Health Promotion.

She has extensive years of working experience in education, mental health, public health and research fields by working as an Adjunct Professor, Intervention Specialist/Mental Health Paraprofessional (MHPP), Autism Behavior Line Therapist, Program Assistant and Researcher.

She enjoys working with her outreach ministry through social media ministry, speaking engagements, hosting empowerment events, hosting and collaborating with other organizations for health fairs and community outreach seminars. She strives to continue to share positive news and information to help her community through a servant's heart.

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Terri and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Terri's viewpoint on the importance of being organized to successfully map out and complete our goals. Goal setting affords us the opportunity to achieve our objectives, if we put in the work needed. If you want to avoid distractions and procrastination, focus, measure progress, and stay motivated then explore organized goal setting. Organizing the attainment of our goals is essential to stay on target while exuding the least amount of energy possible to achieve success. To achieve optimal performance our goals need to be broken down into the tasks and steps required for attainment. Using products such as Terri's Goal Digger Journal are indeed a great asset to help with the journey!

I admire Terri's servant heart, which is shown in her efforts to give back and help others grow. Choosing to have an Outreach Ministry is definitely a great way to service the community and ignite the future generation of leaders. Successful leaders give back, by serving those in need! Social entrepreneurship is on the rise, and I am happy to see Terri doing her due diligence in this arena. A quote by J. Buchman reads, "The role of a GREAT LEADER is not to give greatness to human beings, but to help them extract the greatness they already have inside them."

I can relate to Terri's viewpoint on the importance of mental health and her service in improving the mindsets of those within her circle of influence, as I believe and practice the same. Mental health and mindset are the foundation to success. Terri and I push the same agenda of embracing mental health and seeking ways to stay healthy mentally, such as journaling and going to therapy. How we view life shapes what we see. Having a healthy mindset gives us the foundation needed to see things in a more positive manner. A quote by Steve Maraboli reads, "Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it."

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Terri shared her personal journey to learning the importance of consistent promotion to increase response rate, when she failed to do so within her business. Taking the advice from someone who has realized a gap in operations and worked to close it, is a no brainer for me!

I am proud of myself in knowing that I understand the importance of consistency and practice it in some areas of my business, and I also realize that I have areas where I can improve my consistency efforts. In an effort to continually improve, I will make it my business to figure out how I can be more consistent in the areas I am lacking, because my goal is to increase my response rate in all that I do.

A quote by Dwayne Johnson reads, "Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come."

    Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge

My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. S4 E9: Emotional Intelligence Sets You Apart with Veronica Lane Jun 26, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 9! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Veronica Lane founder of Project Manager Guru, Inc. Veronica Lane is an Author, Speaker, and Trainer who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Veronica Lane's take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of emotional intelligence, overcoming challenges, and the difference between perfection and excellence.

    Veronica Lane Bio

Veronica Lane, Founder and CEO of Project Manager Guru, Inc., is a highly respected B2B management and leadership training developer serving clients across both the public and private sectors. Her successful track record affords her the opportunity to facilitate workshops for governmental clients like the United States Navy and the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the Fashion Industry and Institutions of Higher Learning. She is the author of The Book of Veronica - Beyond the Certification and is a regular project management speaker at business conferences across the United States and abroad.

Veronica began her career as a gymnastics coach and thought her path would include teaching children how to dig deep into their power to summon their greatness. As time went on, this desire to better lives transformed into providing services for the finance and banking industries. While taking on various management roles, she uncovered a gap in the employee development space. It was this gap that lead her to create her company Project Manager Guru, Inc.

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Veronica and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Veronica's viewpoint on the importance of working within the limitations of others to have successful and effective relationships. Veronica's suggestion to avoid taking people out of their comfort zone in an unhealthy way, was spot on! It is extremely necessary to treat people the way THEY want to be treated, and not assume that our personal desires are the same as those around us. This takes getting to know people and respecting how they prefer to be dealt with. To be a successful leader, we MUST take ourselves out of the equation!

I admire Veronica's determination to overcome her biggest challenge, which happened to be public speaking. Our greatest struggle can become our greatest achievement if we put in the work. According to Veronica, the challenges we experience in life are usually the areas we are meant to help others with. Veronica and many others have proven this to be so, and I believe it because I have seen and experienced it myself! In S1 E6: Leadership Empowerment with Kristin Young, she also spoke about this same concept. A quote by Albert Einstein reads, "In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity".

I can relate to Veronica's logical and questioning nature as I am the same. I have an issue blindly following any directions I receive that does not make sense to me, AND I will ask the questions I deem necessary to get to a better understanding before deciding whether or not to move forward. To some this behavior may come across as argumentative or defiant, while to others it comes across as being rational and having great critical thinking abilities, everyone views things differently. On a broader scale, I can see how this skillset plays a role in being in the Project Management field, which shows that is has actually served us both well in the long run.

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Veronica mentioned the benefits of using of our unscheduled time more effectively, in an effort to be more productive. I especially liked the idea of putting together a master tasks list of my intentions, then separating each item by critical or non-critical tasks. I see how this will make it easier to focus on the proper tasks at the appropriate time.

I do not want to get caught up doing minimal effort tasks during my peak performance time, so I will be sure to categorize my master task list accordingly. I want to increase my output, so I will make it my business to complete non-critical tasks during my in between and unscheduled time.

A quote by Sam Levenson reads, "Don't watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going."

    Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge

My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. I know it's hard to absorb too much information at one time and it's even harder to try and implement too many changes at once. S4 E8: Evaluate The Why Behind The What with Joy Pittman Jun 19, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 8! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Joy Pittman founder of J.V.P. Legacy Consulting. Joy Pittman is a Solutionist, Strategist, and Thought Partner who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Joy Pittman's take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of self-care, finding your confidence, and evaluation.

    Joy Pittman Bio

Known as an unprecedented force in the field of Human Resources and Business Management, Joy A. Pittman is a Solutionist, Strategist and Thought Partner. Armed with a Master's degree 1n Human Resources Management, Bachelor's degree 1n Economics and certifications as a Senior Human Resources Professional (SPHR, SH RM-SCP) in her current role Joy serves as a trusted advisor and Business Partner to C-Suite and executive level leadership. Beyond the boardroom, Joy is a keynote speaker, panelist, and facilitator. She is the CEO of J.V.P Legacy Consulting LLC where she fulfills her passion for educating and empowering others by providing effective and efficient strategies to visionaries, entrepreneurs, small business and not-for-profit decision makers.

In addition Joy is the creator of "Still Arriving", her personal content website and the producer and host of "The Joy Ride," her web-series that introduces her audience to thought leaders, content experts, and industry professionals. Through these platforms, Joy aims to foster personal empowerment, multi-generational connection, knowledge sharing and inclusion within the business environment. It is her desire to use her voice, her words and her presence, to challenge societal assumptions regarding power and privilege.

A champion for diversity and the re-centering of underrepresented identities in marginalized communities, Joy serves on the Associate Board of Grace Outreach, a nonprofit organization fostering women's empowerment through higher education and is a member of the New York Urban League of Young Professionals. Her proven methods of business development, risk avoidance, strategic planning and implementation allow her to facilitate operational efficiency while you to focus on your pursuing your passion.

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Joy and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Joy's viewpoint on the importance of self-care to be more effective and productive. As Joy mentioned, our eating, sleeping, and exercise habits play a direct role in how we show up. Taking time to care for ourselves puts us in a better place mentally and physically, which leads to increased focus and the ability to get more done with the time we have. As Joy mentioned, we need to add more quality to our time, and self-care is a great way to achieve this. A quote by Katie Reed reads, "Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what's left of you".

I admire Joy's acknowledgement of originally not being a good follower, which as Joy stated is also a part of being a good leader. Being able to support another leader in their weak areas without judging and ridiculing definitely takes maturity. Understanding and respecting the bigger picture helps to make this aspect of leadership easier. I love how Joy went back to her previous leader and apologized for her shortcomings. As Joy illustrated, successful leaders acknowledge their mistakes and learn from their past behaviors.

I can relate to Joy's struggles with her face showing her thoughts and emotions as I battle in this area as well. Initially I did not realize I had this issue, and I would often wonder why people responded to me in certain ways. Once I realized that my facial expressions can be off putting, as Joy stated, then many things started to make more sense. Learning to be mindful of my facial expressions is a constant battle that I will continue to engage in until I have mastered this craft.

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Joy mentioned the benefits of expanding ourselves as we grow. I really enjoyed the analogy Joy gave about how trees grow in height, while their roots increase in depth and expand in width. Successful leaders understand the need for personal and professional expansion, and actively seek ways to expand themselves.

I will make it my business to continue to expand myself personally and professional as I am to be a deeply rooted leader. One of my goals is to stand strong under pressure, so expanding myself is essential.

A quote by Nikki Rowe reads, "The chaos doesn't end, you kinda' just become the calm."

S4 E7: Lift As You Climb with Tonya Burke Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 7! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Tonya Burke founder of Hidden Gems Enterprise. Tonya Burke is an Author, Podcast Host, and Political Strategist who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Tonya Burke's take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of mentors, networking, and resting.

    Tonya Burke Bio

Tonya Burke is a sought-after expert, speaker, coach, strategist, and author of On The Edge of Greatness: A Real Conversation on How Black Women Can Take Over By Powerfully Running For Office; Co-Author of God Doesn't Want You To Be Broke; host of the highly anticipated podcast Hey Colored Girls You Tha S.H.I.T. (Sisterhood of Highly Innovative Trailblazers); An award-winning politician and community leader that has been advocating as early as elementary school.

Most commonly known as The Political Badass TM, as she Educates, Empowers, and Engages women to run for political office; seek leadership positions in the public and private sectors; and help the leaders of leaders use their inner super hero powers, gifts and purpose; making their mark in the world; all while still loving the life that they live, enjoying their families, and keeping their sanity in the process. Tonya is the Founder and CEO of Hidden Gems Enterprise (www.tonyaburke.org), a boutique leadership coaching, political consulting and strategy firm.

She has been featured in The Atlantic, Black Voice News, Press Enterprise, Precinct Reporter, Noteworthy and Blavity. She has appeared as a panel expert with former Secretary of State and Senator Hillary Clinton and Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a commentator on Canadian Television (CTV), a special guest on Message to The Masses with Tesa, and Charter Local Edition.

Tonya received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz; her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. Tonya resides in Perris, California with her husband Jason and three children Devon(23), Brianna(22), and Jaylyn(17).

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Tonya and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Tonya's viewpoint on the importance of not being an egotistical leader, as we need to understand that we are leading for ourselves as well as others. According to Tonya, we need to realize and be grounded in the fact that it's not all about us, and work toward the greater good for those around us. Successful leaders do not only uplift themselves, they also uplift and push other people. In an effort to not be a "resource hogger" as Tonya stated, we should aim to create a platform for others to elevate themselves also. A quote by Jack Welch reads, "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others".

I admire Tonya's ability to bounce back from her public failure and use the lessons she learned to show up better and stronger. Tonya could have easily chose to retreat and let this experience defeat and deflate her, but she did not. For Tonya, this failure was the best thing that happened to her, because it woke her up. As a result she was able to learn about herself, dig deeper within herself, and love herself more. Sounds like a win in my book! As Tonya mentioned, negative situations can yield positive results, if we do not allow our experiences to go in vain. This reminds me of the Season 4 Episode 1 interview with Chinyere Sam entitled "Experiences Make You Stronger", as they most definitely do.

I can relate to Tonya's belief that women do not often realize their leadership skills and are not always recognized for them, as I believe the same. Through the ages we have been leading in our households, churches, and the school systems; yet, we do not always recognize or get credit for our leadership contributions. Tonya did not seeing her leadership abilities when her father did, and similarly, I did not see my leadership abilities growing up yet my Great-Grandmother and Grandfather did. Only after stepping up and putting herself out there to run or public office did Tonya see herself as a leader. Likewise, I did not see myself as a leader until I began creating She Leads Podcast and Nicole Walker Network. I love when everything falls together and we find ourselves exactly where we are supposed to be, even if we did not initially have the mindset or vision.

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Tonya mentioned the necessity of resting our bodies and souls in an effort to be the best leader we can be. As Tonya mentioned, if we are not good personally we cannot show up the way we may want for others. We have to be mindful not to wear ourselves down and take proper care of ourselves, if we want to lead effectively.

I will make it my business to practice self-care more often and ensure proper rest and rejuvenation as a part of my regimen. Considering that I aim to help others be better and do better, it is imperative that I am whole before I can give myself fully to this cause.

A quote by Ovid reads, "Take a rest; a field that has rested gives a beautiful crop".

Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 6! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Devoreaux Walton founder of The Modern Lady. Devoreaux is an Author, Confidence Coach, and Women Empowerment Advocate who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Devoreaux Walton''s take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of having a mentor, standing up for the less fortunate, and being organized.

    Devoreaux Walton's Bio

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Devoreaux, and I hope you did as well.

I agree with Devoreaux's viewpoint of it being frightening, yet necessary to step outside of our comfort zone. When we step outside of our comfort zone, we allow ourselves to grow personally and professionally. As Devoreaux mentioned, stepping outside of our comfort zone is where the magic happens. IF we are looking to achieve optimal performance, THEN we must step outside of our comfort zone. Learning to get comfortable being uncomfortable is what successful leaders do. A quote by Neal Donald Walsch reads, "life begins at the end of your comfort zone".

I admire Devoreaux's decision to stand up for the underdog as it shows her care and compassion for those around her. Being a compassionate leader is so important. I especially admire how Devoreaux exhibited this trait while growing up and ended up working in a field where she is still standing up for those that need her. Choosing to work with women who feel less than an undeserving of love is needed and I'm glad to see Devoreaux leading in this capacity. We all have power and must choose whether to use our power for good or bad. Devoreaux decided to use her power for good by helping others.

I can relate to Devereaux being the queen of lists as I am the same. I love lists as they help me to stay organized and track my progress. Putting a check next to completed items on my list soothes my soul, as I am a results oriented individual. Lists help to make goals and aspirations tangible and within reach. Breaking down goals into tasks and using lists to plan those tasks is essential for success. List gives you direction and helps to relieve stress, further proving why lists are important for progress. If you need direction and want to relieve stress, like me, then using lists is the way to go.

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Devoreaux mentioned the importance of listening more than you speak, in an effort to be mindful of not pushing your own agenda. As Devoreaux suggested, we should tailor our leadership to what others are seeking and not be self serving. As Devoreaux stated, we must be open minded and not overlook this simple task.

I will make it my business to listen more and speak less, as I aim to be more mindful of others. I do not want to be self serving, and I know this is a must to reach this goal. I care about helping others and realize that I must listen to successfully do so. I have to listen to the needs of others above my personal desires.

A quote by Doug Larson reads, "wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you'd preferred to talk".

Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge of the Week

My leadership challenge for you is to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopted for your life. I know it's hard to absorb too much information at one time and it's even harder to try and implement to make changes at once. When I attend a training or listen to podcasts, I aim to walk away with at least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result. I challenge you to do the same. If you decide to take me up on my challenge, I would love to know about your key takeaway, if you care to share please go to the She Leads Podcast Discussion Group on Facebook and leave your comment under the Takeaway Thursday post or Season 4, Episode 6.

Porter is an Author, Educator, and Publisher who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Dr. Sharon H. Porter's take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of leading with integrity, surrounding yourself with empowering individuals, and not letting a delay mean denial.

    Dr. Sharon H. Porter Bio

Dr. Sharon H. Porter, (Dr. Sharon), is an Educator, Author, Interview Host, and Publisher. She has served as an educator for over 25 years and is a former elementary and middle school principal.

She is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University, National-Louis University, The Johns Hopkins University, Walden University, and Howard University.

She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, International Association of Women (IAW), an Official Member of the Forbes Coaches Council, Sister 4 Sisters Network, Inc., Professional Women of Winston-Salem, and the DMV Mastermind.

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Dr. Sharon and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Dr. Sharon's viewpoint on the importance of surrounding ourselves with the right people, to protect our energy and aid in our continual growth. I absolutely loved Dr. Sharon's analogy of necessity of a co-pilot on a plane in relation to having co-pilots for our life. When great minds come together the unimaginable becomes possible. When you surround yourself with greatness you become the reflection of such, and vice versa. A quote by Rachel Wolchin reads, "Surround yourself with people that reflect who you want to be and how you want to feel, energies are contagious".

I admire Dr. Sharon's determination to reach her goal of obtaining her doctoral degree, considering it was a dream deferred. As Dr. Sharon stated "Delayed is not Denied"! Just because something doesn't work out the way we plan or when we plan doesn't mean that it won't work out in due time. Our desired time is not always in alignment with our destined time. It's imperative that we keep pushing and don't give up on our dreams because they will come true if we continue forth. Using Dr. Sharon's advice to act, access, and adjust will help to stay focused and keep moving.

I can relate to Dr. Sharon as we both as podcast hosts. I actually had the privilege of being on Dr. Sharon's show The Grind Entrepreneur Network, which is where we first met each other. I enjoyed my experience being interviewed by Dr. Sharon and appreciated that we share the goal of empowering others via our podcast platforms. I am super grateful that Dr. Sharon took the time to empower and push me when we chatted after my interview on her show by asking why I didn't have a book yet. Leaders help other leaders stand out and show up at their best, I felt this from Dr. Sharon when she advise me that I should write a book. She did not have to do, and the fact that she did shows her desire to see others win.

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Dr. Sharon mentioned the importance of realizing that our growth and attainment of better is up to us. We hold the sole responsibility to go after what we want. As Dr. Sharon mentioned, when it's up to you and for you, you have to act like it, which requires understanding the game and how it's played.

I will make it my business to not sell myself short and seize the opportunities I am blessed to have. I know that if it's meant to be then it's up to me, so I will act as such.

A quote by Eric Roth reads, "Our life is defined by opportunities, even the ones we miss".

    Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge

My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. S4 E4: It's Not About You with Donteacia Seymore May 22, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 4! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Donteacia Seymore founder of Life Before the Tank. Donteacia is an Innovation Strategist, Inventor, and Public Speaker who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Donteacia's take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the importance of knowing your why, being emotionally intelligent, and leading with compassion.

    Donteacia Seymore's Bio

Donteacia Seymore is an American inventor and award winning innovation strategist. As a product junkie, serial entrepreneur, and giver of lyfe, she is the founder of Life Before The Tank, a remote invention development firm where she works with aspiring inventors to build their inventions. With a renaissance approach to innovation, Donteacia is working to dispel the myth that tech is sexier than the exciting new products we encounter each day. As a writer, public speaker, and innovation enthusiast, Donteacia is inspiring a new generation of inventors to be bold and disruptive...and to do it on their own terms. She has coached hundreds of entrepreneurs and small business owners on strategy and development, helped over 100 inventors with their products and has helped them raise nearly $1M for their amazing ideas.

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Donteacia and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Donteacia's viewpoint to focus more on the advantages of being a woman, as opposed to giving energy to the unleveled playing field we are in. The facts are indeed the facts, yet we do not have to give energy to the lack! We must embrace the advantages we have as women and use our femininity to work our God given magic! As Donteacia mentioned, women possess a charm that is unique and can be used to finesse the atmosphere. We must look at being a woman as an advantage, especially considering that the ecosystem for women is changing and there is so much access now!!

I admire Donteacia's dedication and determination to fix her anger issues by studying conflict resolution and learning emotional intelligence. Leaders accept personal imperfections and figure out ways to fix the problem. As Donteacia stated, it is important to "learn to resolve conflict in a way that is calm". Being calm is indeed a superpower! Luckily, we all can attain it if we put in the work. I love how Donteacia decided to solve her problem by going to doctoral school, as I wholehearted believe in the value and importance of higher education. I am super appreciative of the book she shared with us, that will provide the same knowledge for a fraction of the cost.

I can relate to Donteacia's experiences being the older of several siblings, and having to take charge to help her household, as I experienced the same. Our upbringing definitely molds us for our future, whether we realize it or not. As an adult I often look back over my childhood experiences and am grateful for occurrences that I did not necessarily enjoy while growing up. Character building is not an easy process, yet it is essential to reach our peaks as individuals. A quote by Eleanor Roosevelt reads, "Character building begins in our infancy and continues until death".

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Donteacia mentioned the importance of being compassionate with others to resolve conflict and build trust. Realizing that "it is not about you", as Donteacia said, is essential to achieve this goal. It is so true that we are often quick to judge and cancel others, while not considering that people are either coming out of or going into something themselves.

I will make it my business to listen more and reaction less. I will be more mindful of my responses, and use Donteacia's advice to have some canned responses on hand for times when I cannot take the moment needed to simmer before speaking. I care about how I am impacting and interacting with others, so compassion is a must.

A quote by Audrey Hepburn reads, "Nothing is more important than empathy for another human being's suffering. Not career. Not wealth. Not intelligence. Certainly not status. We have to feel for one another if we're going to survive with dignity".

    Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge

My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. I know it's hard to absorb too much information at one time and it's even harder to try and implement too many changes at once. Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Bev and I hope you did as well!

I agree with Bev's perspective to lead with a global outlook. As effective and successful leaders, it is not about us and we carry the responsibility of showing up as the best version of ourselves for others. Accepting that your life is not all about you requires the willingness to sacrifice your desires for the greater good; which is not always easy to do. As Bev stated, "we are put on this world to have an impact", so it's up to us to represent ourselves accordingly. A quote by Mother Theresa reads, "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples."

I admire Bev's tenacity in bouncing back from her previous entrepreneurial pursuits by using the lessons she learned to improve her practices and continue to chase her dreams. According to Bev, failure is not final and should be looked at with a common at the end as opposed to a period. I absolutely loved the analogy Bev gave between period and common in relation to failure, as it makes the picture so clear. As Bev has shown, we can keep pushing after things don't go the way we planned until we make it to where we should be. A quote by Barbara Corcoran reads "My best successes came on the heels of failures".

I can relate to Beverly's experience of not realizing she was a leader, until she was told by a mentor at a time when she was receptive to hearing the message, as I experienced the same. As with Bev, I was just doing what I had to do to get the job done. I didn't think any more of my actions. Bev mentioned how she was able to see the messages others had been giving her all along in reference to her leadership once she took a moment to reflect. This exact thing happened with me, it crazy how you can miss a message over and over again until you are ready to receive it. I am thankful to finally come to the awareness of my greatness, as it is an amazing realization.

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Bev mentioned the importance of walking in light of your future self, to attract what is meant for you. This advice literally blew me away! I believe in the power of manifestation, yet at times I don't always act as such. Living as your future self requires faith, courage, quieting the nay-sayers, and overcoming self-doubt. I love Bev's advice to pray and meditate before making decisions and taking action, as this is a sure way for us to walk in the path destined for our lives.

I will make it my business to determine what my future self would be doing, and make my current decisions according to her lifestyle since I am her and she is me.

A quote by Brian Tracy reads, "The key responsibility of leadership is to think about the future. No one else can do it for you."

    Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge

My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. S4 E2: Walk into the Change Life Brings with Dr. Iris Cooper May 08, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 4, Episode 2! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Dr. Iris Cooper founder of Glory Foods, Inc. Dr. Iris Cooper is an Author, Keynote Speaker, and Professor who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Dr. I's take on leadership, listen to her interview as she discusses the transitions she has experienced in her career and life, as well as the rise of women over time.

    Dr. Iris Cooper's Bio

Dr. Iris Ann Cooper's career includes leadership positions in financial services, economic development, community service, communication, government, entrepreneurship, and education.

She is the owner of "JustAskIris!" an entrepreneurial coaching firm, specializing in food enterprises and products. Iris is a founder of Glory Foods, Inc., a multi-million-dollar food marketing company and has launched several successful enterprises during her career. She is recognized nationally as a business strategy and branding expert, having coached many startups to sustainability. Iris is the former Director of the Ohio Division of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, where Iris led the state from 29th worst place for small businesses in 2007 to the ninth best in the nation, and 1st in the Midwest in four years. She currently works with nonprofits and for- profit organizations desiring market research, strategy development, and other professional services. Her DBA is from Walden University in Entrepreneurship and her doctoral study was focused on small business mortality and entitled "The First Four Years: A Small Business Sustainability Study."

    Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary

I really enjoyed this interview with Dr. I and I hope you did as well!

I agree with DR. I's notion of the importance of staying strong in adversity in an effort to lead by example for those that are watching you. Often times, whether we realize it or not, there are people watching us to see how we handle things. We have the power to impact others positively or negatively, because Our Decisions Impact Others. Successful leaders make tough decisions, while considering everyone involved not just themselves. A quote by John Wooden reads, "Being a role model is the most powerful form of educating".

I admire Dr. I's solution-oriented mindset. When faced with the obstacle of being excluded from networking events in her industry, instead of accepting defeat or just complaining about the situation; she looked for a solution to her problem. In doing so, she tapped into a market that had been previously ignored and became a powerhouse as a result. A roadblock that could have defeated her, was used to elevate her in her own right! This is actually a double win if you think about it, not only did Dr. I help herself, she also helped others that desperately needed her assistance. Dr. I is a trailblazer in being a representative for the under-represented, which during her time could not have been an easy feet.

I can relate to Dr. I's experiences in being the "go to" person for information, as I am the same. I possess a wealth of knowledge that surprises me at times, and many people come to me for direction. Ironically I did not realize this trait in myself initially, and had no clue that this was an example of my leadership qualities. I can honestly admit that there was a time in my life when I thought everyone knew what I knew, so I did understand or appreciate the uniqueness within me. Being the "go to" person is a valuable trait that should not go unrecognized.

Nicole Walker's Takeaway of the Week

Dr. I mentioned the importance of keeping your eyes on the prize, and not falling victim to the traps/distractions that come along when you are on the right path. I felt this, as I know firsthand how distractions are everywhere, and it's so easy to get off track if you do not keep your goal in the forefront. Distractions can take the form of people, places, or things so it is imperative to be aware and alert.

I will make it my business to stay forward focused and not get thrown off course by anything not relevant to my goals. I am a goal oriented individual, so distractions must be avoided for me to be successful.

An anonymous quotes reads "Focus on your goal. Don't look in any direction but ahead."

Nicole Walker's Leadership Challenge for You

My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life.
