Gimme Shelter May 06, 2024

Show notes

In the series conclusion, John, Alex, and Allen reveal how God alone is our refuge. We're meant to live within the safety of God, drawing our nourishment from our union with him. Not only believing in God, but living within him. Yet the world constantly pulls us out of this habitat while conditioning us to stay lost. So how do we find our way home? The life of the ordinary mystic will help us get back.

Show Notes: In this podcast, John references the books Every Moment Holy (Douglas Kaine McKelvey) and Waiting on God (Andrew Murray) as well as author Evelyn Underhill.

Ordinary Mystics Apr 29, 2024

Show notes

Being a Christian mystic was never meant to be something exceptional or rare. In Part 4 of the series, John, Alex, and Allen swap stories about what it looks like to live as ordinary, everyday mystics and how we're all meant to know God and the beauty of his kingdom in deep, profound ways. In this light, the Apostle John, St. Paul, and David were all mystics; certainly Adam and Eve were as well. Once we understand Christian mysticism as the daily experience of God as revealed in Jesus Christ, we can experience the normal life of an ordinary mystic.

The book John referenced is A Wind in the House of Islam by David Garrison.

What Children & Mystics Know Apr 22, 2024

Show notes

In Part 3 of the series, John, Alex, and Allen reveal how Jesus wants to rescue us from the barriers to fully experiencing God and his kingdom. Returning to the life we were created for isn't a complicated process. But it does require us to exchange our cynicism, skepticism, and pragmatism for the simple trust of a child.

Weary, Skeptical Pragmatists Apr 15, 2024

Show notes

As the series continues, John, Alex, and Allen look at how our culture clings to the belief that practical information is the way to salvation. Yet as this information on the Internet is continually contradicted and undermined, we grow more fragile, vulnerable, and cynical. It has made weary skeptics of us all. Even in the area of faith, we try to make God and his kingdom 'practical' by stripping it of all wonder, mystery, and power. Thankfully, there is a way out of the madness.

Disciples of the Internet Apr 08, 2024

Show notes

John, Alex, and Allen begin this new series with a disruptive observation: We are all disciples of the Internet and it has shaped us profoundly. For one thing, the Internet has discipled our souls to anticipate, even demand, immediate answers. So when we ask God a question and are not answered in the way the Internet does, we feel he isn't listening. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The effects go far, far deeper.

Our Two Most Important Podcasts - Q1 Recap Apr 01, 2024

Show notes

John and Allen conclude the First Quarter recap by focusing on what we believe will be our two most important podcasts this year. Together, they provide orientation to this moment in time. What does it mean to pursue the "All-In" Life—and why is that the only safe place in the world? John expands on a Narnia phrase to reveal that there's actually a second wardrobe door we must go through to experience the full Kingdom life. From there, John passionately shares why union with God must be at the epicenter of everything we are and do. The highlight segments are from our February 26, 2024, podcast (The "All-In" Life) and the March 4, 2024, episode (Don't Miss the Main Thing).

Show notes

John Eldredge invites singer and songwriter Josh Garrels into the podcast studio this week to discuss his new song, "Watchman." It's a fascinating conversation about Josh's walk with Jesus, the power of music, and why John believes "Watchman" is the anthem for this moment in time.

Show Notes: "Watchman" is used with permission and is available wherever you get music.

The lyrics can be found here.

The other song John referenced—"Faith, Hope & Love"—is from Josh's album Chrysaline. Listen here.
