    WHEN DATING HURTS

A “must-listen-to” podcast on dating abuse and domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence. .
Hosted by Bill Mitchell, author of the memoir, WHEN DATING HURTS (Amazon), this book is about the murder of his daughter by her ex-boyfriend.
Bill and his wife, Michele, lost Kristin to dating violence. She was brutally murdered in June 2005, just 20 days after her college graduation.
FACT: 1 in 3 WOMEN suffer serious physical violence at the hands of intimate partners during their lifetimes. Typically, it happens between the ages of 16-24. But can happen at any age. It doesn’t need to happen.
Bill interviews experts with key experiences in dating and domestic violence:
    • Actual survivors of intimate partner violence (dating abuse and domestic violence)
    • “DV” agency counselors
    • Law enforcement professionals
    • Parents of children who were either lost to, or somehow survived, dating violence
After listening to the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, be sure to share it with those who need to hear it… Remember the 1 in 3 women statistic. It is real.
The WHEN DATING HURTS memoir (paperback, eBook, audiobook) is only available on Amazon.

    28. Lauren - Dating Violence (in High School) and Marital Abuse Survivor Jan 23, 2023
    Show notes

Lauren is about 30-years old. Hers is a cautionary tale that needs to be heard by everyone.

In high school, Lauren fell in love with Max. She didn’t know what she was getting into. Abusive guys, like Max, become well-practiced at the manipulation and grooming of their targets. Lauren mistook his behavior as love.

It was not. It was a classic example of dating abuse.

Like many innocent young women, Lauren stayed in the relationship far too long. When it ended, she met a man she would later marry. They have two daughters now. You will hear how that relationship turned out as well. It was not good.

Set aside some time and listen to Lauren's story. Then invite others to hear what can really go on in high school and after. You probably will want to take notes.

We met J R Waltemyer in the summer of 2019, and he remains a valuable contact for us at the Office of Victim Advocate (OVA) in Pennsylvania. OVA is the state agency with the authority and duty to advocate for the rights and needs of crime victims.

OVA accomplishes their mission through victim services, which includes post-sentencing notifications of offender status and movements within the Department of Corrections and the parole system; restorative justice programs that promote resilience and healing; and they are currently developing new initiatives around crime prevention.

OVA envisions a Pennsylvania in which justice thrives. They collaborate closely with fellow state agencies and community groups to develop and promote trauma informed programs.

    26. Rosy - Domestic Violence Survivor in London Dec 29, 2022
    Show notes

"Rosy" is a listener from London, UK. She first came across our podcast when listening to an episode on the This Is Actually Happening podcast. It led to her listening to the WHEN DATING HURTS podcast and hearing interviews with abuse survivors.

Rosy has spent most of her late 20's and early 30's recovering from the dating abuse she experienced. The WHEN DATING HURTS podcast has helped her in understanding her experiences.

Rosy was in an abusive relationship (on and off) from the age of 19 until about 26. She found it hard to leave even after experiencing periods of happiness without him. Part of what kept her in the relationship was feeling unable to cut him off due to mutual friends, abandonment issues that stemmed from her childhood, and generally being subject to emotionally abusive tactics.

This is Rosy's interview on WHEN DATING HURTS.

    24. Why We Made this Podcast Series Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

This episode is a repeat of the first one in the series. I wanted to remind listeners why we created this podcast.

I lost my daughter in 2005 when she was murdered by her ex-boyfriend after she was breaking up with him. Something like that stays with you for a lifetime. It was 17 years ago and feels like yesterday.

Since 2005, I wrote a book about what happened with Kristin and gave it the same name as this podcast: WHEN DATING HURTS. That is also the name of all of the speeches I have given over the years. The WHEN DATING HURTS book came out as a paperback.

Then an e-book. And lastly, an audiobook. The idea has always been that we learned many important insights about how to detect unhealthy relationships, and what to do to break free safely. We felt it our responsibility to share what we had learned.

So, therefore, the podcast series. The wonderful thing about podcasts is I can record one, edit it and share it all in the same day. I could not do that with a book.

I hope you listen to some of the episodes in this podcast series. There are 40 in all. I would love for you to share these with those you know who have children in high school or college. Consider this fact: one and three women will suffer serious physical harm from an intimate partner during their lifetimes. It typically happens between the ages of 16 and 24, but can happen to any woman at any age. It is shocking.

Thank you for listening to this. I hope you subscribe to this WHEN DATING HURTS series.
