    WHEN DATING HURTS

A “must-listen-to” podcast on dating abuse and domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence. .
Hosted by Bill Mitchell, author of the memoir, WHEN DATING HURTS (Amazon), this book is about the murder of his daughter by her ex-boyfriend.
Bill and his wife, Michele, lost Kristin to dating violence. She was brutally murdered in June 2005, just 20 days after her college graduation.
FACT: 1 in 3 WOMEN suffer serious physical violence at the hands of intimate partners during their lifetimes. Typically, it happens between the ages of 16-24. But can happen at any age. It doesn’t need to happen.
Bill interviews experts with key experiences in dating and domestic violence:
    • Actual survivors of intimate partner violence (dating abuse and domestic violence)
    • “DV” agency counselors
    • Law enforcement professionals
    • Parents of children who were either lost to, or somehow survived, dating violence
After listening to the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, be sure to share it with those who need to hear it… Remember the 1 in 3 women statistic. It is real.
The WHEN DATING HURTS memoir (paperback, eBook, audiobook) is only available on Amazon.

    45. "Laurie" Pt 1 of 3 - Married to Serial Abuser/Police Officer. Jul 10, 2023
    Show notes

This is part one of three parts with Laurie and her turbulent marriage to a law enforcement officer.

Laurie wanted to tell the WHEN DATING HURTS podcast her “doozy of a story”. Those

    were her words.

The point she wanted to make was being married to a serial abuser is complicated exponentially when he is also a law-enforcement officer.

Typically, these interviews take between one and a half to two hours. Our interview was nearly 3 hours. Every minute was worth it. It comes in three parts so we do not miss a moment of Laurie’s portrayal of what can happen when your husband, and the system, is working against you.

You will need to strap on your seatbelt before you listen to this story.

    49. Olivia Engstrom - Pt 2 of 2 – Dating Abuse Survivor Deceived by Fiancé Jul 05, 2023
    Show notes

This is part two of a two-part true dating abuse/violence story with Olivia Engstrom.

Olivia was stretched to the limit by a man who swept her off her feet from the start. Never before had she felt so good about a guy—or about herself—as she did when dating him.

That was his insidious scheme to capture her and keep her.

At times, Olivia’s story will take your breath away. You will hear how this man speeded up every step of the dating process, so she felt she needed to either comply or lose him. He was the nicest guy when she followed his plans, but he became an angry, manipulative monster when she did not.

You will hear how his family handled his misbehavior. At times, they berated him for his actions, but when the going got tough, they supported him against her. You will also listen to the many ways Olivia’s friends came to her side when she needed them.

Olivia’s narrative will shine a light on what can happen when someone falls in love fast and cannot see what is right in front of her. There is much to be learned from this fast-paced story of love and abuse.

    44. "Stephanie" Pt 3 of 3 – Domestic Abuse Survivor Who Narrowly Escaped Death. Jun 09, 2023
    Show notes

This is part three of three parts.

Stephanie always had a hard road ahead of her. From the moment she was adopted, there were scant times when life showed her an easy path. And yet, she has continually remained ultra-positive.

It's clear the one person Stephanie believed in most was herself. Listening to her story, your heart will go out to her years before she ever met up with Michael. It's a good thing, because this man brought pure hell into her life for three years.

Stephanie's saving grace came when she heard of a law enforcement veteran and threat assessment investigator who specialized in intimate partner violence. Working together, they were able to turn the tables on Stephanie's boyfriend, her serial abuser and despicable person, Michael.

This WHEN DATING HURTS episode comes with a "trigger warning". This story is intended to show how bad domestic violence can get. It demonstrates in raw terms how one person can inflict pain and suffering without mercy upon another.

By definition, this story does arrive at a positive ending. You will agree Stephanie is a true survivor. My admiration for her goes beyond words.

    41. Romana Frey – Domestic Violence Survivor and World-Class Activist (Canada). May 22, 2023
    Show notes

Romana Frey's experience as a survivor of domestic abuse led this tireless advocate to her “life’s purpose”: working toward the elimination of violence against women, specifically violence that occurs in the home.

Our interview would be full enough with her story of abuse from her parents and, later, her husband, but it also includes decades of stalking, a suicide within her family, and severe brushes with narcissistic family members. You will hear how Romana took what she was dealt and used it as the life experience she needed to take on the unfair treatment of women in Canada.

As founder and director of Amamor Women’s Foundation (AWF)—a grassroots, registered charitable organization that provides grants to registered charities, she is working to reduce domestic violence and femicide in Canada.

Romana's mantra is "See something, say something". You will hear how she followed her call around the world with the purpose of ending abuse.

Learn more about Romana Frey and her mission at: amamorwomensfoundation.com.

Romana can be emailed at: romana.frey@gmail.com.

    40. "Amy" Pt. 2 of 2 - Brave Survivor of Emotionally & Physically Abusive Boyfriend. May 08, 2023
    Show notes

This is part two with Amy. Be sure to listen to part one first.

We pick up on Amy and Brian as the turbulence he causes gets much worse. Amy holds onto the hope and good feelings she once felt about Brian, but he has other ideas.

Amy exhibits many of the characteristics we have seen in other abuse victims: She is affable, generous, optimistic, loyal and forgiving. He is the opposite of the man she met online; the man she thought loved. He became the narcissistic abuser living in the same home with Amy and her young daughter.

Brian was well-practiced at deception: knowing how to groom Amy in their relationship and portray himself as a charming partner. But when he had Amy where he wanted her, the real Brian emerged. And Amy's world turned upside down.

Amy's story of abuse gives us keen insights into how someone can get completely trapped by a calculating abuser. See how this innocent woman came to doubt her own sanity. After giving Brian more last-chances than he deserved, in part two, Amy seeks help and learns ways to turn the tide in her favor.

NOTE: Today, Amy considers herself and her daughter fortunate to get away from Brian alive.
