Whelmed Reprint Vol. 6 - Crispin Freeman Jan 02, 2019

Show notes

Welcome back to Whelmed Reprints. It's the Holiday Season here in the States so we'll be taking time to spend with our families and get ready for Season 3, premiering this Friday, January 4th, 2019.

For our final reprint of the holiday season, and to celebrate the airing of Young Justice Outsiders this Friday, I wanted to revisit our first Young Justice cast interview.

As you'll hear, Crispin Freeman is not only the voice of Red Arrow, he's a highly skilled sound engineer and a scholar of mythology. We invited Crispin on first because, well, it turns out that he and I have mutual friends, a fact I had no clue about until we had announced that Whelmed was in production.

Crispin, thank you again from the entire team here at Whelmed. You are quite literally a gentleman and a scholar and chatting with you was both a pleasure and an honor.

In other news, Season 3 airs this Friday! If you happen to live in or around San Diego, Whelmed will be hosting a viewing party at the incredible "Eclipse Chocolate" here in South Park. Eclipse is both a bar and bistro serving delicious food and drinks, as well as producing the most amazing chocolate, vanilla, and caramel infused confections. Feel free to stop by early for dinner and drinks, then join us in the Umbral Room at 7pm for socializing, and at ~8pm for the triple-episode premier. Myself and editor Richard Kreutz-Landry will be there, along with some of our previous discussion guests and, we hope, a few surprises as well.

Happy New Year. We hope you've enjoyed your holiday season, and you enjoy this double-episode special. Thanks to all of you for the incredible support you've given to both Young Justice and us here at Whelmed. You've made our past 2 years a dream come true.

Stay Whelmed, everyone. Today is almost the day.

Whelmed Reprint Vol. 5 - Emily Buza Dec 27, 2018

Show notes

Hello Team.

Welcome back to Whelmed Reprints. It's the Holiday Season here in the States so we'll be taking time to spend with our families and get ready for Season 3, premiering on January 4th, 2019.

With Whelmed Reprints our team are picking a few of our favorite episodes to bring to new listeners, and I wanted to end 2018 revisiting what turned out to be a life-changing interview. For me.

In other news, we have just over a week until Season 3 airs! It's finally here. The first three episodes of Young Justice Outsiders airs on January 4th, with 3 episodes releasing weekly for two more weeks, and 4 episodes releasing on the last Friday in January. So how does that unique release schedule affect us? Practically there's no way we can do 3 of our Whelmed-style deep-dives per week, so what we'll be doing is this (and shout out to Ben Schwartz for helping us think this through). The week after each Friday release, we are going to let ourselves off the hook as fans. Emily and I will be discussing the episodes with a slight change to our regular format. We'll be doing very short mission briefings, with a heavy emphasis on our Feeling the Aster segment. Canary Debriefs will be skipped during these geek-outs and since we will have no material to spoil, any major speculations on what's to come will be couched in our "Crashing the Mode" segment in case we happen to be right. We'll continue to have our Fan Service segment as well, so please feel free to tag us on Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook with fan art, AMVs, cosplay photo shoots, and more.

Then, after the mid-season finale, we will return to episode 1 and dive in with the perspective of all 13 episodes under our belt. This will allow us to release reviews of part 1 before part 2 airs in June 2019. In addition we have a lot of bonus episode material lined up including Discussion Sessions with cast, crew, and fans; a list of new Secret Origins; the inevitable romantic arcs to feed Super Sweethearts; and a few other surprises. So starting the second week of January, you'll be getting new episodes from us at least once a week.

As for today, we hope you enjoy today's double-length collection and your ongoing holiday season.

And remember:

Smoochie moments are important.

Whelmed Reprint Vol. 4 - Jeff Stormer Dec 19, 2018

Show notes

Welcome back to Whelmed Reprints. It's the Holiday Season here in the States so we'll be taking time to spend with our families and to get ready for Season 3, premiering on January 4th, 2019.

With Whelmed Reprints our team will be picking a few of our favorite episodes to bring to new listeners. Our fourth reprint merges two of my all-time favorite interviews into one listening experience.

Jeff Stormer is the creator and host of the Party of One podcast. I'd known about his podcast for a while, but the first time Jeff and I ever interacted was on the DM's Block gameshow, "Geek Wars" in which Jeff and I were on opposite teams, dueling it out on all things comic. I used to say I'd been humbled by Jeff in that competition, but now that I know his secret, I'm happy I was able to stay anywhere near him.

We will definitely be having him back on to chat about the 4th World's influence on Season 3, but until then we hope you enjoy today's double-length collection and your upcoming holiday season.

Stay Whelmed everyone.

Whelmed Reprint Vol. 3 - Kris Newton of Gameable Dec 17, 2018

Our third reprint happens to coincide with this weeks release of Misplaced in the Enhanced Episodes on DC Universe, in which you'll hear me reference this specific two-parter.

Kris Newton is the co-creator and host of the Gameable Saturday Morning podcast. Growing up, Saturday mornings were the highlight of my weeks. I would get up at 6:30 and ride out the mornings eating cereal and surfing between stations until almost noon. Of course, I also started playing roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons and the superhero RPG Champions in my pre and early teen years. When I heard there was a podcast that did Whelmed-style storytelling analysis on scores of my favorite shows and discussed adapting them to RPGs, I downloaded it immediately. Then, when we got the announcement about Season 3, Kris and I started talking about Gameable/Whelmed crossovers.

Kris first came on the show to talk about gaming, but after that first interview we talked for at least an hour off-mic and I knew I had to have him back. Even knowing how insightful and brilliant Kris was, I didn't expect this episode to be much more than a fun romp into Captain Marvel AKA: Shazam. I was so wrong. Kris took me on a psychological, mythological, spiritual, social, and mystical journey into the world of Billy Batson. Kris gave me so much information on so many topics that I'm compelled to listen to these episodes again and again to catch things I missed the first time around.

If you are as fascinated by Captain Marvel's role in Young Justice as we are, just wait until you hear Kris talk about the influence this foundational character had, and still has, on the comic industry. And of course, if you have access to the Enhanced Episodes, check out "Misplaced" which aired this week. You can hear Neal blow both our minds about something in the fight scene neither Emily nor I had picked up on, and watch me cry on camera to the ending. Glad that's recorded for posterity.

We hope you enjoy today's double-length collection and your upcoming holiday season. Stay Whelmed everyone.

Whelmed Reprint Vol. 2 - Morgan Jenkins Dec 06, 2018

Show notes

Welcome back to Whelmed Reprints. It's the Holiday Season here in the States so we'll be taking some time to spend with our families and to get ready for Season 3, premiering on January 4th, 2019.

With Whelmed Reprints our team will be picking a few of our favorite episodes to bring to new listeners. And our second reprint is another 2-part Discussion I revisit over and over again.

Morgan Jenkins, Dungeon Master and creator of the Going in Blind Actual Play podcast, came on to discuss the critical skill of engaging your watchers, readers, and players by getting them to ask the right questions. At least that was her original idea. Morgan's insights into how to incorporate all your senses into your prose, scripts, and games is inspired. As you'll hear, Morgan is charming, insightful, imaginative, analytical, empathic, and hilarious. Every time I hear her on a podcast I feel like I'm being snuggled in a warm, geeky blanket.

We hope you enjoy today's double-length collection and your upcoming holiday season.

Stay Whelmed everyone.

Hello Team. Welcome to Whelmed Reprints. It's Holiday Season here in the States so we'll be taking some time to spend with our families and to get ready for Season 3, premiering on January 4th, 2019. If you're in the States, happy Thanksgiving. We here at Whelmed are thankful for all of you.

Secret Origins : Batgirl Nov 07, 2018

Show notes

Welcome to the Watchtower and welcome also to Season 2 of "Secret Origins". In this series I will be diving into the history of the main characters in Young Justice, heroes, supporting cast, and even the villains.

Today we will be discussing fan-favorite Batfam member, Batgirl, in as many of her iterations as I can manage.

Recommendations

In addition to the origin issues mentioned above, there are a few great Batgirl stories I'd like to recommend.

Of course we've already recommended the Stephanie Brown run of Batgirl from 2009-2011. Make sure to check those out.

On Wings: Birds of Prey issue #8. Nightwing and Oracle on a date. That's it. No supervillains, just them. For those fans who didn't see the relationship between Dick and Barbara (aka "Maneuver 7") coming in the final issue of the tie-in comics, stories like this are for you.

Batgirl Mini-Series from 2008

That wraps up our first episode of Season 2: Secret Origins. Next time we will be discussing one of my favorite Titans, who has a power very close to my heart. Changeling: Known to pretty much everyone else as - Beast Boy.

Thanks so much for spending time with us.

Discussion : Stephanie Lemelin : Voice Acting and Artemis Oct 31, 2018

Show notes

Today in the Watchtower we welcome the incredibly talented Stephanie Lemelin. Her acting career stretches across both the big and small screen, appearing in live action, animation, and video games, but if you're listening to our show then you probably know her best as everybody's favorite archer with a supervillain family tree: Artemis.
