This weeks episode is about the very satisfying work of volunteering to help keep our favorite trails open. Every spring, it takes a dedicated group of off-road enthusiasts many days of hard work to clear and open the trails from the winter weather. Winter in the High Sierra is a violent season that has cold temperatures, high winds, snow. All of these factors contribute to many down trees that can impact the approved trail. The priority is resource preservation by preventing erosion causing re-routes as users travel the trails. Managing the trails for future use is important work and off-roaders are proud to be a part of it. If you are interested in adopting a trail, send us an email, get involved with a club or contact the forest service directly to start the process of helping preserve the areas that we all like to recreate in. Get involved!

May 07, 2024
Jason and Chris have a guest on today’s show. After many rounds of negotiating WWW was able to convince one half of the defunct Mike and Max Offroad Podcast to dust off his microphone and headphones. Please welcome Max to the show. Yes folks, he is real and tells some great stories about his wheeling evolution. What he used to drive and what he drives now. There is even the dropping of a secret family recipe for the perfect simple syrup, which is one of the ingredients for an Old Fashioned. Great stuff, so grab your favorite Old Fashioned and enjoy the show!

Hello faithful listeners, in this episode Jason and Chris have great connectivity with the internet! The computer was the problem, but as always, we know how to overcome challenges whether they are on the trail, at work, or even while recording a show. Nothing a hammer can’t solve and remember, in a pinch, everything can be a hammer! Seriously though, prepare to listen about a mad cannonball like dash to Oregon, some racing news, and of course some late season skiing report. We hope to see a lot of you out at Prairie City SVRA this weekend to help raise money for Sue Lee-Bun so that she can continue to get the medical care she needs to fight cancer. #cancersucks See you out there! Cheers!

Ep. 254: Super Fun Trip to DF Fabrication
Apr 02, 2024
The boys make a quick road trip to visit an awesome businessman. The owner of DF Fabrication was kind enough to invite us into his shop for a behind the scenes look. Anthony, the owner, has mad skills and has the equipment and tooling in his rural shop to pretty much build the baddest ass offroad buggies that you can imagine. From computer controlled tube cutters, water table and welders…he’s got it all. We even got to see some of the projects that he is currently working on and gotta say, his skills are legit. If you are in the market or even think you are in the market for a custom offroad rig, you should reach out to Anthony and start the dialog. You won’t be disappointed.

Ep. 252: A King of the Hammers EMC Winner and a 1st Time 4400 Finisher
Mar 19, 2024
3-Time King Randy Slawson and perennial favorite, Amber Turner join Chris and Jason on this episode of Wheeling Wine and Whiskey. Listen in as they continue with the popular KOH recaps. It is awesome to be able to let all the participants tell their individual stories of the challenges they face before, during and after the races on the lakebed. Randy and Amber both raced in both the EMC on Friday and the Race of Kings on Saturday. Randy raced a brand new 4800 Bomber car in the EMC and Amber raced her Samurai for the last time. You will hear all the exciting details here. Moving forward to Saturday had Randy back in the seat of his well prepped 4400 car while Amber was strapped into the 4800 Bomber car that was prepped for 4400 by installing 40’s and some seat brackets to allow Amber to drive the car. The racing was exciting and the stories even more so. You don’t want to miss this awesome episode, so grab your favorite beverage and hold on tight.

Jason and Chris continue with epic KOH followup stories and this one does not disappoint. It’s a very long episode but the story is so good you’re not going to want to stop listening. Kevin ‘Ultra4Jones’ and JLatte Rodney join us on the show to tell us about the banging and clanging sessions that occured just to get the car to the lakebed. But wait…it didn’t end there. So much more soul searching and all night bangin and clangin, trailering and what not ensued once they got to hammers. So much to tell, but you don’t want to read about it. Listen to it now…right now…come on…do it!
Buckle up and Cheers!

Feb 06, 2024
Chris and Jason met up with some of their favorite people when they were on the lakebed for King of the Hammers 2024. The special guests on this episode are none other than the builders and drivers of the TesTen Electric race car, Keith and Melissa Silva. Also joining us in this episode is Eric Amato of Radial Dynamics, an innovative company that makes leading edge power steering components. The tie-in is that Radial Dynamics provided the high voltage electic power steering in the truck. Lots of knowledge is dropped in this episode and lots of great stories about problems that were solved. Great stuff straight from the lakebed from our mouths to your ears. Enjoy and Cheers!

Jan 23, 2024
Buckle up right now, because we have so many Jason’s in this episode, it’s crazy! The KOH 2024 buildup continues with this epic chat with Ultra4 racing legends Jason Scherer and Jason Berger. The two of them join our Jason and Chris, who is the odd name out for an incredible dive into KOH prep. This is super timely as you can hear the clanging of tools in the background with the team putting the car together. Folks, this is authentic. Jason Scherer was kind enough to take a brief break from working to bring us up to speed on the car and their plan for this years race. So many incredible nuggets of information here. It’s like being a fly on the wall and you really don’t want to miss this. Again, buckle up and get ready for Boone Rd. The next episode will be recorded from the lakebed.

Ep. 243: Cancer Sucks…How to Help Sue Lee-Bun!
Jan 16, 2024
In this episode of our show real life stuff rears it’s ugly head once again. Sue Lee-Bun, an off-road icon in the Northern Sierra where she and her family call home and recreate, has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. This news totally sucks and is completely unfair. We are talking about a woman that lives a very active life as she is a wife, mother, outdoorsperson and successful business owner. This is a person that has been doing everything right and still this type of crap happens too. No fear, she is young and strong and has an incredible support network to help keep her strong through this battle. However, all that is well and good, but her family also needs money to help with the medical bills. With great humility, a Go-Fund-Me has been started to help with the costs that will start to add up fast as she seeks to rid her body of cancer. Please, faithful listeners, if you can spare a few bucks to help her and her family it will be greatly appreciated. Also in this episode is more build up to King of the Hammers. The road trip begins in less than 2 weeks.

Jan 09, 2024
Eric Wicks from Wicks Family Racing joins the podcast to bring everyone up to speed on what their team is planning for King of the Hammers 2024! From what they learned, WFR is up to a lot and will be on the lakebed in force this year and have even bigger plans for the future. In the meantime, Eric is going to be racing a Razor in the 4900 class this year so we get to hear all about the prep that they are doing to get ready. The car will be ready and the driver will need to learn how to drive it as it is a different driving style than is employed in a 4400 car. Eric will adapt and he will kick ass on the lakebed this year. Cheer Eric and his co-driver, Justin, on as they tackle the track! Great stuff, so grab a beverage and hang on tight!

Ep. 240: How Many Ford 7.3’s Do You Need?
Dec 26, 2023
Kevin “Ultra4Jones” Jones joins the boys in this episode. The age old question for Ford owners…how many spare engines should I have?, gets answered. LOL, seriously though, Kevin gives us an update on the engine that he will be installing in his OBS Ford F-250, aka, Chase 518. Lots of great information about 7.3 liter Powerstroke diesel engines is here and in Kevin’s head. If you need help with a 7.3, he’s a growing resource. Hit him up on the IG @ultra4jones But wait, the episode continues with talk about the race car build progress (or lack of) and then lots of Ultra4 racing talk with the news that the Robinetts are no longer interested in running the series. What is the future of Ultra4 racing? Tune in for some thoughts, but certainly no inside information is available to us. Just thoughts. Great episode so grab your favorite beverage and enjoy!

Dec 12, 2023
Jason and Chris had the opportunity to sit down with the late Rod Hall’s crew chief. Brad Falin joins them on the show to tell us about a different era/generation of off-road racing. We hear about the earlier days of the Baja 1000 and how the race and region has changed over the years. Brad also talks about his development of shocks and suspension components for the original Hummer H1 that Rod Hall began racing in 1993. Really cool stories about that time. Chris and Jason get together to give a recap on their Thanksgiving celebrations with family. Chris had a chill one at home with his family in Livermore and Jason celebrated up in the mountains. In short, good food and libations were had by all! Also, because this is Wheeling Wine and Whiskey, the boys actually talked about all 3 in this episode. The Wheeling wasn’t really wheeling as Chris just took the Jeep out of the garage to run it around town as he went from winery to winery picking up his wine club shipments. One of the items discussed is the wild steering behavior when on a bumpy and uneven road. Actually pretty scary and he needs to find a solution. The Baja 1000 race is briefly discussed with a motorcycle rider pulling an ironman event! Tons of topics including Christmas decorating tips for outdoor lighting. Enjoy as the holidays are just getting started! Cheers!

Ep. 218: Mutiny on the Podcast….Thwarted!
Jul 11, 2023
Jason was johnny on the spot in this episode as he walked in on Lorenzo and one-time guest host Rodney trying to steal the show! He was able to break up the mutiny or coup and retake control of the board and the show. Thanks Jason. However, I think Lorenzo may have put a latin music virus on the portable recorder as a final shot at the show. What will become of Lorenzo? The important part of the episode is the update on the annual Adopt-a-Trail work weekend that Esprit de four does up in the sierra nevada mountains off of hwy 4. Jun 06, 2023

Chris drove down with his camper and Jeep to enjoy the weekend with some work, some wine tasting and some campfire therapy. They also talked about whiskey, campers and trailers. Pretty much went back to their roots with this episode. We have also heard that people are wondering about Sierra Trek and if it’s going to happen. Folks, it’s happening and it will be on the scheduled dates. The snow is melting fast in the mountains and they have a plan to make sure the road is clear. Big shout out to all of our supporters through Irate4x4 and Patreon. Without you, the show wouldn’t be what it is and we truly appreciate it. Thank You!

The off-road community suffered a big loss recently with the passing of Jason Klein and Neil Flanders in a terrible accident while wheeling at Moonrocks. The shock and pain of their passing being experienced by their loved ones must be unimaginable. Our deepest condolences go out to their families as they suffer through this tragic loss.
We are sure that many of you heard about the accident on social media. Social media does a great job of rapidly disseminating information, whether it is good or bad, out to the groups that share a common interest. As is known to happen, sometimes the information gets twisted or lost in translation or has been hearsay and changed so many times that the truth gets lost. A dear friend of the two men that died reached out to WWW on behalf of their families to clear the air and get the correct facts about what happened. It was, is, a great tragedy and from this we can all learn something from it. Please listen to this somber episode as we hear the facts about what happened and how we can all become better prepared off-roaders with lessons learned. Their families have set up GoFundMe pages to help with expenses. The links are below, so please consider donating to help the families out.

That friend is none other than Mike Austin from the now defunct fastest growing off-road podcast, Mike and Max’s Offroad Podcast! We welcome Mike back to the mic after a 10 month hiatus. News flash…he hasn’t lost any of his spunk or candor……!!! Maybe he needs to. But seriously, it was a lot of fun re-connecting with Mike and getting caught up on his latest activities and stories. So, for this episode especially, grab a drink and buckle up….seriously buckle up! Cheers!

Hey everyone, Jason was out of town at the time of this recording so Lorenzo took things in hoof and directed Chris to phone a friend to be on the show so as to not totally embarress himself. He called a good friend of the show, Toyota fanatic and co-host of our sister podcast, Snail Trail 4×4, to be on the show. Please welcome Jimmy Jett!! They had a lot of fun and talked about a bunch of stuff including national PB&J day and Toyotas (OMG!). They also may have busted on Jason and Tyler a little bit! LOL! Mar 17, 2023
In this monumental episode, Chris and Jason phone a lot of friends of the show and get their thoughts on the last 4 years! Emotions were running high as we talked about a lot of the highlights of our show and even some of the lower moments. Looking through the statistics of the show, it’s mind boggling to see how far it has grown and what the reach is…truly something we never expected and we are beyond humbled. This show has grown organically over the last 4 years and you, our listeners, have grown with us, and for that we are eternally grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and cheers to another 200 episodes!!! Sorry for the inconvenience and making you wait for the rest of the story, but……:)

He was smart though and brought an experienced KOH driver into the cab. None other, than the world renowned Kevin “Ultra4Jones” Jones joined the team to be his experienced co-driver. You get to hear how this relationship/friendship came to be and how Kevin Jones’ knowledge of Johnson Valley became critical to their success during the week. They have quite a few interviews setup during the week, but this is one that has been a long time coming. Join us in this last final episode before we get to the lakebed for the 2023 King of the Hammers! We have a couple of special guests join us to give us some sad news, but with much hope for the future. The hope is that even though there is much disappointment now, this gives the racing team a chance to heal and double and triple check everything on the car in preparation for 2024, when they will crush it. In the meantime, it’s all KOH talk now with insights on the track, strategies that teams will be pondering and excitement that needs to be metered! Only a few more days and the WWW boys will be on the lakebed doing what they do best…delivering quality content to you, the listeners! Stay tuned because more great stuff is coming soon. FYI, we had some technical difficulties during the recording of this episode and we experienced some audio drop outs from Eric’s connection. Ep. 194: Paul Wolff…A Crafty Wolff in the Fold!
Jan 24, 2023
Welcome back to another exciting episode where we continue the build-up to King of the Hammers 2023! Chris and Jason had the awesome opportunity to chat with one of the newer and most exciting to watch racers in Ultra4….Paul Wolff! Don’t be fooled by the man’s calm demeanor, he is a Wolff on the track, chasing down all other competitors always shooting for the podium! Very fun to watch which is one of the reasons we wanted him on the show. He got his start in UTV Pro Mod class and showed his driving skills. You will hear how he traveled the country going from race to race and how he eventually ended up behind the wheel of a UFO built 4400 class Ultra4 car. His story is awesome and is the kind of grassroots stuff that the Ultra4 community started out as and still has. He’s going to be on the lakebed so be sure to wave to him and give him a big thumbs up when you see him in the lineup to the starting line! Great stuff in this episode, so grab youself a Cream Soda and enjoy!

WWW Bonus Episode: KOH 2022 Should’ve Lost Footage!
Jan 20, 2023
Here it is, the much anticipated footage from last year’s KOH Podcasts Collide Get Together! It’s loud, it’s boisterous, it’s obnoxious, it’s funny and it is all slightly censored. Our explicit label is put to the test with this one but you be the judges. I will say that we had a really fun time meeting up with and cramming all 4 groups of podcasters into one of the largest RV’s that we had available to us as a recording studio. In attendance was: Wheeling Wine and Whiskey Podcast, Snail Trial 4×4 Podcast, The Trail Chasers Podcast and Cruisin2Camp Podcast. Jason had a rant and a great discussion about the latest Ultra4 off-road race in Jay, Oklahoma. Don’t miss out on all the snippets and old man medical talk!
Ep. 164: More Off-Road Recovery with Nick Bailey of Avalanche Technical
Jul 12, 2022
Wow, there was so much information in the first episode with Nick that we ran out of time. We brought him back…as promised for more!!! Nick answers a few questions about the Glacier Girl recovery and then we dive into recovery equipment! This is great information from a guy that know his stuff. If he uses it and trusts it, so should you! As we have mentioned on the show over and over the weather in the high sierra is nothing to take lightly and even the most experienced and equipped people can be caught off guard and in trouble. Lots to learn here and everyone should know who Nick is in case they need to be recovered…snow or shine! Some of the equipment that he operates includes a Toyota 4Runner (we know), Kawasaki ATV, he has a Can-Am SxS and various other tracked and wheeled vehicles to aid in back country recoveries. There will be more of these types of episodes in the future because we know the popularity of the sport has really taken off and sometimes people bite off more than they can chew. Grab your favorite beverage and hold on! Cheers!

Beautiful scenery surrounds this remote dry camping location. It is a good base of operation for the group as they headed out each morning to work on clearing and opening the trails for the season. Exciting stuff…yes, it’s work but the reward and feeling of satisfaction afterwards is well worth it. Hear the complete recap and we are happy to announce that Coral Hollow and the Mattley trails are all clear and open for summer recreating. We are also continuing the theme by connecting with more of the young contingent of racers. In this installment, we meet with Wayland Campbell (@wayland_shreds). He is part of a family of racers and has his own incredible story to tell. Later in the day, a couple of hours before the final, we escaped the heat of the day for some air conditioning and water for our chat. It was epic and he is such a genuine and down to earth person. The conversation flowed and would have kept going but he had a race to drive in. So grab your favorite beverage and strap in! Cheers!
Ep. 156: A Visit with Ultra4 Racers Madie Moon and Woody Rose
May 17, 2022
Jason and Chris go on the road in this exciting episode and their destination was Prairie City SVRA in Folsom, California. They went there because Midwest America Outdoor and Ultra4 Racing were having an event. Off-road racing and all the excitement that goes with it was in abundance at this great venue. Great racing, great crowds and great meeting new people! In the midst of all the excitement, Jason and Chris were able to sit down with two of the young up and comers of the sport for a nice chat. Madie Moon and team mate, Woody Rose took a few minutes out of the chaos to sit in some air conditioned comfort and hydrate before the afternoon racing. Ep. 155: Ultra4 Racing Coming to Town and Accessory Talk!
May 10, 2022
Good day fans! Lots of material is covered in this episode. So much that you would think that Chris and Jason were suffering from ADHD. They aren’t really, they just had so much to go over before some significant events happen. Ultra4 racing is going to be local to us in NorCal. They will be racing on May 13th and 14th at Prairie City OHV. This facility is located just east of Sacramento and is a great venue for the racing that we love. Even better when it is just a short drive for us. We are media again and will have unprecedented access for photos/videos and of course quick chats with some of our favorite drivers. Look forward to this and the coverage we will provide. Also, a quick update on SEMA for 2022. Some major changes are occurring and you can hear about them here. Also, our latest giveaway, the Morrflate Extreme 4×4 tire repair kit is still going on but the contest ends on the 20th of May. Be sure to get your entries in before it is too late. Truck accessory and product talk are in this episode too. Chris is super impressed with his Bullet Point Mounting Solutions products that he bought for his ram truck. He is using them to hold his ham radio control panel and his rear view camera monitor. Very easy to install and extremely robust. Chris is also looking at the BakFlip truck bed cover for his Chevy Colorado and is asking our listeners for their opinions. Let us have it…the good the bad and the ugly. Lots of material, so grab a beverage and hold on!
Ep. 154: Sucks to be Late…Better than Never!
May 06, 2022
We’re back after a short delay! Woo, that was close, almost missed a week! Wheeling Wine and Whiskey always gives till it hurts and this week was a grind to make time to make it happen. Plethora of topics, but the main one is our transition away from Patreon to Irate4x4.com for a place that our most avid supporters can continue to help the show financially. Chris and Jason feel that the Irate4x4 site is a better location for us to spread the word of our show. The core of Irate4x4 is our people, fellow outdoors and off-road enthusiasts. We are also launching a new giveaway. Tyler from Morrflate has generously donated an Xtreme 4×4 Tire Repair Kit valued at $125 retail. Listen in to get the details on how to enter to win!
Give our voicemail number a call @ 408-800-5169! You can leave all kinds of messages and there is a chance that it will get played back on the show. Call to say ‘Hi’, or call to complain about Toyotas, or just ask us a technical question that you know will get answered correctly.

Chris and Jason had an opportunity to speak with the man that is in charge of Ultra4 racing as it stands today. That man is none other than JT Taylor, certified card carrying bad ass! JT was kind enough to give us a little of his time and brought us up to speed on the rapid changes that have been happening to our beloved race series since King of the Hammers. He gives us some background on the new owners and what the vision is moving forward. The vision sounds awesome and it sounds like the execution of that vision is equally awesome, so far. We get some information on the evolving rules and some news on the incorporation of the EV class into the races. Exciting stuff and we can’t thank JT enough for carving out some time for us. We hope to meet up with him at Prairie City in May when Ultra4 Racing descends on that location. Looking forward to it. Ep. 148: King Of the Hammers Golf Cart Edition – A Chat with Team 813
Mar 22, 2022
Well, the Wheeling Wine and Whiskey boys have crossed over to the dark side and allowed a golf cart team to be interviewed. LOL! Actually, super producer Lorenzo scheduled it and didn’t tell Chris and Jason who their guests were until 5 minutes before recording. Anyway, they swallowed their pride (and a bunch of bourbon) and played through like the professionals that they are. So, Jason B and his co-driver Toby, came on the show to tell us all about their experiences as first time racers in a 4900 class car (side by side, golf cart) at King of the Hammers 2022. Lots of great stories about the drama before and during the race! One thing that sticks out for these two is that don’t know the meaning of the word “QUIT”. Despite the shows prejudice against golf carts, this ended up being a very fun and informative episode. Grab your favorite beverage and strap in because more KOH recap is here. Cheers!

Episode 110: Epic Adopt-A-Trail 2021 Recap!
Jun 22, 2021
In this episode of Wheeling, Wine and Whiskey, the boys do a thorough recap of this years club adopt-a-trails. This was the year of extreme logging with over 100 fallen trees that needed to be cut and moved off of the trails. As you will hear, the work was difficult but rewarding and would not have been possible if the number of members that helped hadn’t come up. The fact is that even with all the help that was available, the opening of the Mattley trails isn’t complete yet. The number of trees down was epic! The Adopt-A-Trail program that the forest service runs is a critical part of the system that helps to keep the extensive trail systems in our favorite areas open and safe. The program is centered around having volunteers monitor their chosen trails throughout the season to clear fallen trees so that there are no unintended reroutes, pick up garbage and stabilize erosion. It is important work and rewarding. If you or your organization is interested in this program, please contact your local forest ranger station for the area that you recreate in and ask how you can help out! Cheers!
