Episode 336- The Ruins (2008) Jun 14, 2021

Show notes

In this week's episode, we discover that a crappy book is likely to make a crappy movie with the 2008 adaptation "The Ruins." Special topics for your consideration include: a running theme of terrible doctors named Jeff, our inability to keep a running pun throughout an episode (but also, some pretty siiiick plant-related puns), secretly wishing for vines to grow under one's skin, never wanting to travel with an Amy, and the worst choices. Just...just the worst choices.

Sometimes the outdoors is the worst bad guy of all. If you agree, you might also enjoy such episodes as Episode 12- "The Happening," Episode 152- "Anaconda," Episode 168- "Arachnophobia," Episode 193- "Orca" and Episode 238- "Frogs."

Episode 335- Frankenhooker (1990) Jun 07, 2021

Show notes

In this week's episode, we tackle perhaps our most boob-heavy film of all time: the 1990 Frank Henenlotter horror/comedy/exploitation film "Frankenhooker." Special topics for your consideration include: an extremely loose interpretation of Mary Shelley, a substantial amount of science mumbling, the beauty that is "Basket Case," misremembering films of your youth, delightful puppetry and Zombie Teddy Ruxpin vs. Zombie Skippy Scribbles.

This movie feels like a bit of a mashup of several other films we've discussed: Episode 29- "Re-Animator," Episode 199- "Terrorvision," and "Basket Case," which was our guest appearance on the excellent podcast Neon Brainiacs. It's their Episode 52 and you can hear it at https://neonbrainiacs.libsyn.com/53-basket-case-1982 or wherever you listen to podcasts. Oh, and the "Black Hole Sun" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mbBbFH9fAg

Episode 334- Husk (2010) May 31, 2021

Show notes

Well, is this the scarecrow film we've been waiting for? I'm actually not sure and for that, I apologize. Regardless, we're talking about it! This week's movie is the 2010 film "Husk." Special topics for your consideration include: knowing basically everything you know about corn from "Field of Dreams," burlap: a terrifying fabric, wishing for the death of Baby & Baby, odd crow behavior and confusing dream sequences.

Did you miss our first attempt at a scarecrow movie? It's Episode 237- "Scarecrow." Just...just really into corn? How about Episode 59- "Children of the Corn"?

Episode 333- The Conjuring 2 (2016) May 24, 2021

Show notes

This week, Ed & Lorraine Warren are back on their bullshit and frankly, we are not having it. Furthermore, how does this movie have 80% on Rotten Tomatoes? It's madness. Speaking of madness, special topics for your consideration include: ghosts who enjoy the work of Margaret Thatcher, ghosts who can tell riddles that the demons who inhabit them cannot hear, making a movie that is basically a greatest hits of your other movies (not that we do the best job remembering the other movies but please recall that being fun is better than knowing things), and the ultimate embarrassment: doing a sincere Elvis impersonation in front of other human beings.

If you want to hear our episode on "The Conjuring," it's number 96. If you'd like to delve more deeply into the Wan-iverse, check out Episode 81- "Saw" and Episode 303- "Insidious." I also just realized that I have attributed the "Paranormal Activity" films to Mr. Wan in previous episode notes, and while I regret that error, please see above re: being fun and knowing things.

Episode 322- Leviathan (1989) May 17, 2021

Show notes

You know, we often say that a movie has everything, but truly the 1989 sci-fi creature (?) film "Leviathan" does. You've got Daniel Stern, Ernie Hudson, Mulder's girlfriend from season 2 of "The X-Files," Robocop, sorta fish people, questionable bathroom practices, a lot of picking and choosing from movies that are actually very good, and the evil inherent in capitalism. What more could you want?

Maybe you want more Daniel Stern? Go listen to Episode 253- "C.H.U.D." More Ernie Hudson? You'll want Episode 214- "Congo" featuring our excellent and hilarious friend Elaina.

Episode 331- John Dies at the End (2012) May 10, 2021

Show notes

In this week's episode, we decided to take a suggestion from listener/Apple Podcasts reviewer* karlyAB and watch the 2012 film "John Dies at the End." Special topics for your consideration include: drugs, whether drugs enhance this film (possibly?), whether Allen is currently on drugs (he is not), the further misadventures of our 19 & 9 best friendship, having a hard time recalling plot points despite many exposures to them, and Paul Giamatti: is he a meatball, or no?

*you can most likely persuade us to cover a movie of your choice with a favorable review I'M JUST SAYING.

Like Don Coscarelli? We've covered "Phantasm" (Episode 67) and "Phantasm II" (Episode 314) Like Paul Giamatti? I don't know, watch the "John Adams" miniseries. It was pretty good, even if it was hard to forget sometimes that it was Paul Giamatti.

Episode 330- Deathproof (2007) May 03, 2021

Show notes

This week's episode is the second in our 2007 "Grindhouse" series-- the Quentin Tarantino-written and directed film "Deathproof." Special topics for your consideration include: amazing stunts! butts! obscure references! Quentin Tarantino's childhood! butts! unwanted foot touching! BUTTS! and of course, an ode to our boyfriend and quite frankly your boyfriend as well, Kurt Russell. What a guy.

Last week (Episode 329- "Planet Terror") was the first half of "Grindhouse" in case you missed it. Since Tarantino does have great taste in film, I looked up a list of his top 10 favorite horror movies and we'd covered some: Episode 194- "Santa Sangre," Episode 305- "My Bloody Valentine" and for some reason, Episode 289= "Crawl" (but why?)

Episode 329- Planet Terror (2007) Apr 26, 2021

Show notes

In this week's episode, we're jumping into the first half of the 2007 "Grindhouse" double feature- the Robert Rodriguez entry "Planet Terror," or as it's more commonly known, "The Machine Gun Leg One." Special topics for your consideration include: machine gun legs obvs, the concept of being a 90s human, feeling an intimate emotional connection with Robert Rodriguez, the utter gooeyness of this film and a weird amount of knowledge with regard to The Black-Eyed Peas.

Want more Robert Rodriguez? You could check out Episode 87- "The Faculty" and Episode 210- "From Dusk til Dawn." More Rose McGowan? She's in Episode 44- "Scream" and Episode 298- "Jawbreaker." More Freddy Rodriguez? He's in Episode 269- "Can't Hardly Wait" and I'm sorry, I legitimately can't stop myself from talking about that movie. It's a like late-stage pandemic brain disorder.

Vacation Episode- Face/Off (1997) Apr 19, 2021

Show notes

This week we're taking a little break. Rather than record a new episode, we sat on our porch studio and ate ice cream cake instead and frankly, we needed it. We're not leaving you with nothing though! We hope you enjoy this episode that was previously available only to our Patróns on our action movie podcast: the absolutely batshit film "Face/Off." We'll catch up with you next week when we discuss the first half of a double feature which will encompass our next two episodes-- "Planet Terror" of "Grindhouse." Have a good week, EMTs!

Episode 328- I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) Apr 12, 2021

Show notes

In this week's episode, we're on the front porch on a lovely but windy Pittsburgh evening discussing what is perhaps the worst-named sequel in the history of film franchises- "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer." Special topics for your consideration include" potential title re-writes (like perhaps "I Have Not Forgotten What You Did Two Summers Ago At This Point"), a running game of "do you recognize that guy?", the best thing about this movie (Brandy obvs), a twist that NO ONE COULD HAVE SEEN COMING, and some bad advice on what to do if you're being attacked. Seriously, remember that our motto is 'being fun is better than knowing things' and as a result, we'd just recommend self-defense classes.

Did you miss "I Know What You Did Last Summer?" You can be forgiven, it's Episode 8 and god help me I defended it. You can also catch J.Lo.Hew in Episode 269- "Can't Hardly Wait" and you can see Jeffrey Combs in another early episode of ours: Episode 29- "Re-Animator."

Also, we love you guys. You've really been making this worthwhile for us lately, seriously.

If you liked this, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen. Someday we're gonna be #1 in Finland. Some sweet day.
