ALIEN HAND SYNDROME: The Uncontrollable Monster At The End Of Your Arm Oct 10, 2026
    Show notes

For more than a century, doctors have been recording patients whose hands act on their own, from unbuttoning a shirt to closing around the patient's own throat. Hollywood was making movies about murderous hands by the 1930s, decades after the reality of it was discovered.

FEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Imagine losing control of one of your hands – and that hand tries to kill you. It’s not the premise of a B-horror movie, it’s a very real condition that is just as frightening as it sounds. (Alien Hand Syndrome) *** Thanks to the film Fire In The Sky, it is one of the most famous alien abduction cases in history. But what exactly happened to Travis Walton – and is the story believable? (The Abduction of Travis Walton) *** One of the most famous and well-documented cases of poltergeist activity has a funny name, Humpty Doo. The name is an Australian slang term meaning ‘everything topsy-turvy, or turned upside down’ – a perfect description of what poltergeists do. (The Humpty Doo Poltergeist) *** A Weirdo family member used to think he was just seeing things – until he began listening to Weird Darkness and realized he might be surrounded by very real dark entities. Weird Darkness moves from a neurological disorder that turns a person's own hand against them to a UFO abduction in the Arizona woods, a listener's run-ins with shadow people, and a poltergeist that pelted an Australian house with stones.
It opens with alien hand syndrome, sometimes called Dr. Strangelove syndrome, in which one hand acts without its owner, unbuttoning Karen Byrne's shirt while she talked to her doctor or grabbing a bus passenger's trouser leg. Doctors tie it to brain damage from surgery, strokes, tumors, and degenerative disease.
From there, it's November 5th, 1975, in Arizona's Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, where Travis Walton left his logging crew's truck, walked toward a glowing golden disc, and was struck by a blue-green beam; he was missing for five days, and his story became the film Fire in the Sky.
Next, a listener writes in about shadow figures that followed him through a stretch of depression, edging closer as he got better until he ordered them to leave, and months later one of them was sitting in his passenger seat on his way to work.
The episode closes in 1998 near Humpty Doo in Australia's Northern Territory, where bone-dry pebbles fell indoors during the monsoon and messages spelled out in Scrabble tiles and gravel named a friend killed in a road accident. Three priests failed to stop the Humpty Doo poltergeist, and researchers Tony Healy and Paul Cropper had about 30 objects fall on or around them over five days.

FEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: “I just wanted to see what it felt like to kill Grandma.” “When I see a pretty girl walking down the street, I think two things. One part wants to be real nice and sweet, and the other part wonders what her head would look like on a stick.” “If I killed them, you know, they couldn’t reject me as a man. It was more or less making a doll out of a human being… and carrying out my fantasies with a doll, a living human doll.” “With a girl, there’s a lot left in the girls body without a head. Of course, the personality is gone.” These are just some of the actual phrases serial killer Edmund Kemper III used to describe his joy in mutilating women. (Kemper) *** Was Zigmund Adamski really the victim of murderous extraterrestrial visitors? If so, why would they choose to kill a human and leave his body for all the world to see? (The Zigmund Adamski Extraterrestrial Incident) *** A Weirdo family member shares her hair-raising incident with an invisible phantom’s hand. (Hair Raising Experience)

This episode of Weird Darkness runs from the Santa Cruz murders of Edmund Kemper, the Co-Ed Killer, to a coal miner found dead on a coal pile in Todmorden, England, and an invisible hand in a listener's hair in Oceanside, California.
It opens with Edmund Kemper, who shot his grandparents to death on their North Fork, California ranch at fifteen, spent five years at Atascadero State Hospital, and by 1972 was driving the roads around Santa Cruz with a University of California parking sticker on his car, courtesy of his mother's job on campus. Over the next year he killed six young hitchhikers, among them Fresno State students Mary Ann Pesce and Anita Luchessa, fifteen-year-old Aiko Koo, Cindy Schall, and UC Santa Cruz students Rosalind Thorpe and Allison Liu. In April 1973 he killed his mother, Clarnell, and her friend Sally Hallett, then drove to Pueblo, Colorado, and called the police from a phone booth to confess. A jury found him sane and guilty on eight counts of first-degree murder that November, and he's been turned down for parole again and again ever since.
From there, the episode crosses to West Yorkshire, where coal miner Zigmund Adamski walked out of his home in Tingley in June 1980 to buy potatoes and turned up dead days later on top of a pile of coal in Todmorden, about twenty miles away, with burns on his head, neck, and shoulders covered in an ointment nobody could identify. That November, PC Alan Godfrey, one of the officers on the case, reported an object he first took for a bus hovering just off the ground near a Todmorden housing estate, and under hypnosis he described a tall man called Joseph, eight small robots, and a dog the size of an Alsatian.
The episode closes with a listener's account from 2009, when she was packing her car after dark outside her aunt's house in Oceanside, a house that had felt wrong to the family since her aunt moved in back in 1996. Alone in the dim driveway, she felt what seemed like a moth the size of a bat thrashing in her short hair, swatted at empty air, and then felt something tug her bangs at the trunk of the car, and she ran back into the house calling for her family.

FEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: The mysterious Men in Black have been around long before Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones put on the black suits and sunglasses. The encounters with these strange men have been taking place for decades. Sometimes unnerving, often bizarre, and almost always chilling for those they approach. (The Sinister Men In Black) *** Legend has it that a four-legged fiend with glowing eyes and a blood-curdling howl stalks the area of Devon, England. The mystery creature was seen only yards away from a party of schoolchildren, the animal has a thick, shaggy coat, rounded ears and large front limbs which would be powerful enough to tear human flesh. Is it man’s best friend – or a hell hound? (Phantom Hound) *** Life presents people with all sorts of unexplained phenomena. One of the strangest is places disappearing. It might happen on a hiking trail, or in the forest, or alongside gravel roads in rural counties… but then some happen in the most surprising of places – for example, in the center of New York City. This episode of Weird Darkness runs from the men in black who shadow UFO witnesses to places that vanish overnight, a shape-shifting beast photographed on Dartmoor, and a basement in Orillia, Ontario, where something climbs the stairs at night.
It opens with Ronald Reagan telling Steven Spielberg, after a 1982 White House screening of E.T., that some people in the room knew everything on the screen was true, and from there it moves into decades of men in black encounters. Radio journalist Danny Gordon's investigation of the 1987 Wytheville, Virginia, UFO sightings brought him warning calls, a break-in, and two men posing as newspaper reporters who walked through his house before some of his negatives went missing. UFO researchers John and Mary Robertson watched a man in black stand outside their apartment building for days in 1968; Harold Dahl said a stranger driving a black Buick recited his Maury Island sighting back to him the morning after it happened in 1947; a man calling himself Jack Smith filmed two identical men in fedoras at a New Orleans streetcar stop in 2014; and Rendlesham Forest researcher Brenda Butler describes a road chase, tapped phones, and warnings to stop digging.
From there, Reddit users describe places that disappeared, among them a Texas gas station where the clerk danced alone to ragtime at 2 a.m., a South Carolina diner where a grown woman spoke for a doll in a high chair, a cave on the Niagara Escarpment that swallowed three hours, a tunnel full of daylight on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and a free-pizza shop in New York's Financial District after Hurricane Sandy. None of them turned up again.
Next, falconer Martin Whitley's American clients photograph a black, pony-sized animal on Dartmoor in June 2007, about a mile from Hound Tor, and the creature seems to change shape from frame to frame, though a local woman insists it was her Newfoundland, Troy. The same moor carries the legend of the hunter Bowerman and his hounds turned to stone by witches, along with the red-eyed Wisht Hounds tied to Squire Richard Cabell and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The episode closes with Weirdo family member Chris Francis, who moved back into his mother's century-old brick house in Orillia, where an old fieldstone foundation in the basement swallowed flashlight beams, the basement door opened and slammed on its own night after night, and a six-foot shadow climbed the stairs. A line of salt across the old servants' staircase only made it worse, and as the family drove away for good, he saw a bald man in a gray coat standing at the basement door.
