Terrifying & True | Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm? Hagley Wood’s Unidentified Woman May 20, 2024
    Show notes

Who put Bella in the Wych Elm? In 1943, boys exploring Hagley Wood found a woman’s remains inside a hollow tree. Terrifying & True follows the investigation, the graffiti that gave the unidentified victim a name and the theories that grew around the discovery. Wartime espionage and witchcraft enter the story as speculation, while the physical evidence offers a more limited account of what happened. This British true-crime mystery asks how an unknown woman became a local legend without her identity being established. Who was she before the question on the wall? We're telling that story tonight.

The Lake by Edgar Allan Poe: Solitude, Terror & a Poisoned Gothic Eden May 17, 2024
    Show notes

A lonely lake becomes a place of beauty and dread in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Lake.” Black rocks, tall pines and the change from daylight to darkness shape a speaker’s fascination with a landscape others might fear. This brief poetry reading explores solitude, mortality and the strange pleasure of terror, offering a quiet Gothic interlude rather than a conventional ghost story. The water seems to hold both menace and sanctuary. For listeners drawn to Poe’s dark Romantic imagery, the poem asks why a frightening place can sometimes feel more like home than the ordinary world.

Bigfoot at the Coast: A Pacific Northwest Cryptid Encounter During a Bear Attack May 15, 2024
    Show notes

A coastal camping trip turns into a nighttime rescue when a child disappears into the woods. In Bruce Haney’s “Bigfoot at the Coast,” Tom and his friend Arturo leave beachside routines behind as a bicycle ride leads toward a black bear—and something even larger. This Pacific Northwest cryptid story combines childhood friendship, camping nostalgia and the fear of being far from adult help. Bigfoot may be real, but knowing that does not tell the children what it wants. The next shape to step out of the trees could change the rescue entirely.

Terrifying & True | Axeman of New Orleans: Unsolved Murders, the Jazz Letter & 1919 Panic May 13, 2024
    Show notes

The Axeman attacks brought fear to New Orleans, and a letter signed with the killer’s name made jazz part of the legend. Terrifying & True follows the 1918–1919 violence, the people targeted and the investigations that failed to establish a definitive culprit. The episode examines the message promising safety to homes playing music, without assuming its author was the murderer. True crime, public panic and newspaper spectacle meet in a story where a city's soundtrack became part of its defense. Who was behind the attacks—and who was exploiting the fear? We're telling that story tonight.

Unknown Broadcast | Typhoon — Joseph Conrad’s China Seas Survival Drama May 12, 2024
    Show notes

Captain MacWhirr trusts his steamer more than the warnings of bad weather. Then the Nan-Shan enters a China Seas typhoon that puts every judgment to the test. Unknown Broadcast presents “Typhoon,” an Escape adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s maritime story, told through the eyes of chief mate Jukes. Passengers struggle below deck while the crew fights wind, water and failing order above. This vintage survival drama turns a captain’s apparent stubbornness into the central question: is his refusal to panic the thing that endangered them, or the thing that might bring them through?

Never Bet the Devil Your Head — Edgar Allan Poe’s Supernatural Satire May 10, 2024
    Show notes

Toby Dammit cannot resist a wager, even when his favorite expression puts his own head on the line. Edgar Allan Poe’s “Never Bet the Devil Your Head” follows a boastful man toward a covered bridge, a mysterious stranger and a challenge that should have been declined. This complete reading mixes supernatural horror with grotesque comedy and a satire of stories expected to teach a moral lesson. Poe gives a casual turn of phrase an alarming literal possibility. For Toby, talking big has always come easily. Paying up may prove rather more difficult.
