    About Mark

Mark has been training, coaching & mentoring individuals and teams since the early 90s. He joined the British Army in 1983. Mark passed the world-famous Commando course in 1990 and while posted with the British Commandos experienced the stresses of operations during the first Iraq Conflict.

While serving with 29 Commando Regiment as the senior instructor, running the Commando Training Wing, Mark was the first person to initiate structural change to the way soldiers were trained for the commando course.

His work in this field culminated in the design of the Performance Development Systems; a holistic and robust approach to maximize real-world performance for organizations, coaches, and athletes.

Following several years of running, designing and quality controlling "train the trainer" courses for the Military, Mark turned down a promotion in order to leave the forces to commit to working on PDS full time.

He has spent over 25 years researching and developing effective learning and adherence systems to help coaches and trainers maximize the performance of the individuals and teams they are working with. In 2006 Mark was awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE) by her Majesty the Queen for his work in developing the system.

Mark believes in a "practitioner" based approach. He soon identified that many theories that may look good on paper or in controlled environments are not so effective in the "real world". PDS is all about providing a positive sustainable performance impact on the "shop floor".

People talk about "old school" when it comes to coaching and athlete performance. The problem is most of us have the wrong perspective. "Old school" is not strength and conditioning in a vacuum with no functional movement. "Old School" is not running laps until you puke. About Dr. Tommy John

With Master Degrees in Health and Exercise Science from Furman University, Dr. Tommy John brings over 17 years of health experience to the table. At completion of his studies Dr. Tommy played professional baseball for three years with teams such as the Schaumburg Flyers, Tyler Roughnecks and the LA Dodgers. After his career was abruptly ended from a rare infection in his throwing shoulder, Dr. Tommy developed his own baseball performance company providing over 11,000 baseball training sessions for baseball enthusiasts from ages six to thirty. Additionally, he expanded his practice of personal training, sports performance training and rehabilitation of all types of soft tissue injuries.

Dr. Tommy was drawn to chiropractic because he realized there was a higher element missing from the healing, performance process and proper function of the human body in the innate intelligence and the nervous system: brain, brain stem and spinal cord. That paramount observation led him to obtain his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Life University, (a 4-year program), in Marietta, Georgia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.

As the son of renowned Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John who played in the Major Leagues for 26 seasons and was the first person to comeback in 1974 from the revolutionary surgery named the Tommy John Surgery, it is not surprising that Dr. Tommy developed a passion for proper healing and physical function as he witnessed firsthand the outcomes of injury, innovation and principled healing.

The primary goal of Dr. Tommy John Performance and Healing Center is to provide entire families with integrative, individualized care plans and treatment to improve their quality of life by reducing physical and emotional pain from injury and aging and minimizing the use of pharmaceuticals or surgery.

#69 Why more Physical Education and recess are the keys to better students in schools, with Paul Zientarski, TED Speaker and 40-year veteran Physical Education teacher. Jul 09, 2018
    Show notes

What if there was a simple solution to getting better academic performance, reducing discipline problems, and greater engagement of our children at school? There is a simple solution, and instead of adding more of it, we've been eliminating it from schools altogether! Paul Zientarski shares how he has transformed school districts by simply adding more PE and recess to the daily schedule.

    Enjoy the show!

    Show Notes

6:15 40 years and 75 sport seasons - Paul's depth of knowledge and experience

11:15 We need to put the education back into physical education

15:45 What has to change to make PE relevant again

25:30 Kids need to move based on their attention spans – not sitting for hours

30:15 There is plenty of data to prove PE and recess are vital to learning

    38:00 PE also improves discipline

42:45 What is the one thing Paul would change in schools

    About Paul Zientarski

Paul Zientarski is an Illinois based PE consultant and retired teacher. Paul was inspired when he heard a Harvard professor speak about the positive influence physical activity has on the brain. Paul teamed up with a few like-minded individuals and together they developed the Learning Readiness PE (LEPE) program to prove physical activity has a positive impact on brain function.

The Learning Readiness PE Program collects and analyzes data that proves students perform better in a class they are struggling in if they preceded the class with physical activity. The research was a huge breakthrough in what Action for Healthy Kids refers to as The Learning Connection. Stated simply, healthy and active kids learn better. The Program has received worldwide attention and Paul has traveled the country presenting his brain research findings, explaining the effects of fitness and exercise on academic performance. His favorite moments include presenting brain science research to the Illinois Enhance PE Task Force and to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition.

Paul's investment in the mind body connection goes much deeper than LEPE. He spent forty years as a physical education teacher. "Helping kids lead healthier lives has been a priority of mine for years." The biggest struggle he's come across is trying to educate parents on making smart and healthy choices for their kids. As a loving parent and grandparent himself Paul says, "Every parent wants their children to be successful but they haven't figured out that success and happiness come from children who are healthy." He won't stop until his message is heard loud and clear!

Fun fact! Paul is co-author of a book titled "What Teenage Driver's Don't Know: The Unwritten Rules of the Road."

    About Nick Gates

Nick is the Founder and Global Strategist for Coaches Across Continents. After 18 successful years as a businessman, sports entrepreneur, and Executive for Middlesbrough Football Club, Nick launched Coaches Across Continents as a nonprofit organization in 2008.

Gates had played soccer for England as a Youth International and for four years for Harvard University. After graduating, Gates founded PLAY SOCCER, a soccer coaching company in New England. By 2005, Play Soccer had worked with more than 1,000,000 children and 9,000 local coaches, using a "Soccer as Education" curriculum.

Nick is also an avid traveler, having visited over 80 countries in the past decade. These roots of a Soccer as Education curriculum, the power of football, and his love of traveling led to the idea that culminated in the creating of Coaches Across Continents. Nick remains the driving force behind Coaches Across Continents, growing the organization from one community in 2008 to serving over 50 communities in approximately 20 countries in 2013. He has spoken on Sport for Social Impact in global forums in Qatar, Monaco, the USA, and the UK while Coaches Across Continents has won global awards each of the last four years.

While not traveling or working on and off field for CAC, Nick enjoys golf and scuba diving.
