#315 Hugh McCutcheon, Olympic Gold Medalist Volleyball Coach: "Championship Results Require Championship Behaviors" Mar 10, 2023
    Show notes

Hugh McCutcheon is a native of New Zealand, where he was national team volleyball player. He played on the New Zealand junior and senior national teams from 1988 to 1990 before coming to the US. He soon began an illustrious coaching career, leading the US Men's National Team to Olympic Gold in 2008 in Beijing, and the US Women's National team to silver at the 2012 London Olympics. He then became the head coach for the women's volleyball team at the University of Minnesota from 2012–2022, leading the team to numerous NCAA tournaments and building them into a national powerhouse. After announcing his resignation from the volleyball team at the conclusion of the 2022 season, in January 2023, McCutcheon became the assistant athletics director/sport development coach at Minnesota.

McCutcheon has just published a brand new book Championship Behaviors: A Model for Competitive Sports Excellence which is the major topic of our discussion today. It is a wonderful handbook for getting the culture, skill development, and leadership aligned to have a successful season, by someone who has accomplished this at the very top levels of competitive sport.

#314 Ashley Merryman, 2x NYT Bestselling Author on the Science of Winning and Losing, Coaching Men vs Women, Challenge vs Threat Environments, and How to Give Feedback to Your Athletes Mar 03, 2023
    Show notes

Ashley Merryman (www.AshleyMerryman.com) changes the world's dialogue. She finds the science essential to understanding what makes people tick—what motivates us, what inspires us—from individual quirks to institutional phenomena. Then she explains how to use these insights to transform our lives. The best place to get them is to subscribe to her newly reborn newsletter www.thesherwoodreport.com

Her book NurtureShock, co-authored with Po Bronson, has become one of the most influential books about children ever published. On the New York Times bestseller list for more than six months and an Amazon Top Nonfiction 100 book for over a year, it has been translated into 20 languages.

Their follow-up, Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing, was another instant New York Times bestseller with foreign translations around the world. Since its publication, Top Dog has revolutionized the world of elite performance. Coaches of professional sports carry it in their bags. Olympians have described themselves as "Top Dog athletes."

In addition to cover stories and more for Newsweek and New York, Merryman has had bylines in the New York Times, Time, the Washington Post, CNN.com, the Guardian, ESPN Magazine, and others. Her media appearances include: CNN's Anderson Cooper 360; Fox and Friends; CBS This Morning; @KatieCouric; John Stossel; ESPN's Outside the Lines; HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel; Red Bull's Visions of Greatness; BBC's World News and Sports Hour; and NPR's On Point. She is also a contributor to Chronicle Books' bestselling 642 Things to Write About. (And she once delighted "Mr. Wonderful" Kevin O'Leary with an on-air explanation of how science could predict his success, while Stephen Colbert devoted a segment of The Colbert Report to her take on kids and competition.)

#313 Some Thoughts on Parent Engagement, Building Trusted Relationships, and Coach/Parent/Athlete Accountability with John O'Sullivan Feb 28, 2023
    Show notes

This week John shares his thoughts after two weeks on the road visiting college teams and conducting some parent and coach workshops on some topics that have come up a lot recently. Quite a few coaches have asked about parent engagement and how to work with those parents who just don't get it, and John shares his ideas around building trust, and making deposits in the trust bank so you can make withdrawals at a later date when you do screw up, or have to be a bit more demanding. He discusses his thoughts on communication, some tools to get parents, athletes and coaches more aligned, and then the concept of accountability being a two way street, something that takes great courage, and also something that should not be viewed as a negative. He mentions the work of a group called The Program, you can learn more about them here.
