#321 Sherri Coale, Hall of Fame University of Oklahoma Women's Basketball Coach, on Essential Questions to Ask Your Athletes, the Importance of 1 on 1 Time with Athletes, and her New Book Rooted to Rise Apr 21, 2023
    Show notes

Sherri Coale was one of the most accomplished and impactful head coaches in University of Oklahoma history in any sport, is retiring after a transformative 25 years at the helm of the OU women's basketball program. Coale retiring after 25 years, more than 500 wins, 3 Final Fours, 9 Sweet 16s and 10 conference championships. Owner of the most wins in OU women's basketball history and a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, Coale was a four-time Big 12 Coach of the Year and directed the Sooners to 10 Big 12 championships (six regular season, four tournament) and 20 postseason appearances, including 19 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. She finished her collegiate career with a 513-294 (.636) overall record and a 253-167 (.601) mark in Big 12 play. Nine of her squads that qualified for the NCAA Tournament advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Three of them barreled their way to the Final Four (2002, 2009, 2010), with the 2001-02 Sooners advancing to the national championship game. All told, her teams registered 31 NCAA Tournament wins, good for 15th most among Division I women's basketball coaches. Her three Final Four appearances are tied for eighth most in history.

Her new book about her journey in sports and life is called Rooted to Rise. a collection of essays about people—some have achieved extraordinary worldly success, and some have led what society might label "ordinary lives." But the stories are far less about what her people have done and far more about who they are, or were, or always will be through the impact they had on those around them. As Coale writes: "The people I write about in Rooted to Rise are my people. But everybody has some. I hope you recognize and remember yours through the stories of mine."

This week we bring you a special episode recorded in Sitges, Spain with TOVO Academy Founder Todd Beane (@_ToddBeane), Soccer Parenting founder Skye Eddy (@SoccerParenting), and John. We all happened to cross paths in Spain when John's team was participating in a training week at TOVO, and we took the opportunity to have a few tapas and record our conversation. It's a wonderful conversation about coaching, challenging your athletes, accountability, parent engagement, and so much more. This is an unstructured, unplanned conversation, so its like you are a fly on the wall (just waiting to see if there is any food leftover). We hope you enjoy and get a lot from our talk.

#316 Lauren Fleshman, 5x NCAA and 2x National Champion Runner and Author of NYT Bestseller Good for a Girl, on Women Competing in a Sports System Designed for Males and Her Journey n Professional RunningLauren Fleshman final Mar 16, 2023
    Show notes

Lauren Fleshman is one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and Runner's World. She is the brand strategy advisor for Oiselle, a fitness apparel company for women, and the co-founder of Picky Bars, a natural food company. She is the author of the NY Times Bestseller Good for a Girl, an extraordinary look at female athletes and the struggles they face in a male dominated world. As the book description says, "Fleshman's story of falling in love with running as a girl, being pushed to her limits and succumbing to devastating injuries, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes. Long gone are the days when women and girls felt lucky just to participate; Fleshman and women everywhere are waking up to the reality that they're running, playing, and competing in a world that wasn't made for them. Drawing on not only her own story but also emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes, of any gender, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild our systems of competitive sport with women at their center. Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life, a raw personal narrative of growth and change, and a vital call to reimagine sports for young women."

This is an extraordinary conversation about women in sport, raising and coaching female athletes, and finding your voice and your soul in a world that devalues the humanity of so many. We were blown away by this book, and you will be as well. You can grab it here.

#316 Lauren Fleshman, 5x NCAA and 2x National Champion Runner and Author of NYT Bestseller Good for a Girl, on Women Competing in a Sports System Designed for Males and Her Journey in Professional Running Mar 16, 2023
