Cognitive Reframing: Change the Meaning, Not the Facts Aug 21, 2026
    Show notes

Two men, the same racing heart, two completely different interviews — and the only difference was the frame each wrapped around identical sensations. This episode unpacks the mechanism behind cognitive reframing: how appraisal, not events, sets off your emotional cascade, why honest reframing is nothing like toxic positivity, and a repeatable four-step drill you can run on a napkin.

Does Habit Tracking Work? The Mechanism Behind the Tick Box Aug 18, 2026
    Show notes

David Watts unpacks the psychology of habit tracking — why the humble tick box works, and why it isn't magic. Drawing on self-monitoring research, the what-the-hell effect and the work of James Clear and Charles Duhigg, he explains the three real mechanisms at play and how to track for feedback rather than shame.

Deep Work: The Neuroscience of Real Focus Aug 14, 2026
    Show notes

Deep work isn't a personality trait — it's a trainable capacity, and the modern world is engineered to fragment it. David unpacks the mechanisms behind focus failure: attention residue, the 23-minute ramp, and the dopamine loop your phone exploits. Then he lays out how to rebuild depth by changing conditions rather than blaming your willpower.

    Your Phone Isn’t Stealing Your Willpower — It’s Running a Loop Aug 11, 2026
    Show notes

Phone distraction isn't a moral failing — it's a dopamine-driven prediction loop engineered to be irresistible. David Watts unpacks the neuroscience of variable reward and lays out the environmental mechanism that actually starves the habit: remove the cue, add friction, and give the checking urge somewhere else to go.

Persuasion vs Manipulation: Where the Line Actually Is Aug 07, 2026
    Show notes

David Watts dismantles the false equation that all influence is manipulation, offering three testable questions that draw a sharp line between the two. Drawing on threat-detection neuroscience, Cialdini's principles, and behavioural economics, he shows why persuasion and manipulation use the same tools but sit on opposite sides of intent, transparency, and whose interests are served.

How to Stop Overthinking: Quieting a Busy Mind Without the Woo Jul 31, 2026
    Show notes

David Watts unpacks the mechanism behind overthinking — the default-mode network, threat-driven problem-solving, and why 'just stop thinking about it' backfires — then offers five grounded tools to quiet a busy mind. No mysticism, no miracle cures. Just the neuroscience and the practical next step.

Why Your Brain Hates Uncertainty — and What It Does to Your Decisions Jul 28, 2026
    Show notes

David Watts unpacks the neuroscience of not-knowing — why a 'maybe' hurts more than a definite 'no', and how a brain wired to predict the world treats uncertainty as a threat. Drawing on the 2016 UCL snake study and the clinical work on intolerance of uncertainty, he shows the four hidden taxes it levies on your decisions and offers a two-week drill to raise your tolerance rather than chase impossible calm.

Habit Stacking: Bolt the New Onto the Sturdy Jul 26, 2026
    Show notes

Why your morning coffee runs flawlessly on autopilot while your good intentions collapse by Thursday — and how to borrow that reliability. David unpacks the cue-routine-reward loop, the one-sentence formula for habit stacking, how to choose a strong anchor, and the three quiet mistakes that sink most attempts.

Keystone Habits: The One Change That Quietly Rewires Your Whole Day Jul 24, 2026
    Show notes

The story of how a chief executive obsessed with worker safety accidentally built one of the safest, most profitable companies on earth — and what it reveals about the single habit that drags a whole life behind it. Death on Toast: An Honest Health Update Jul 21, 2026
    Show notes

Recorded live, from bed, on a Saturday afternoon feeling — in David's own words — "like death on toast." Ahead of a hospital admission on Monday, David sat down to give an honest update: where his health actually stands, and everything he's been trying.

He talks candidly about the long-running fight with the medical aid and the Council of Medical Schemes, the flare-up — or relapse — of the last few weeks: the pain, the cramps, the mobility, and the brain fog. And the maddening dance of simply getting admitted at all.

Then the real substance — the things he's been testing on himself, because when you're left to sort it out alone, you become your own guinea pig. NAD+ and the remyelination research. Benfotiamine and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Meditation and Qigong. Ozone therapy. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine. And the one everyone swears by that did precisely nothing — CBD. No miracle cures here and no confident claims; just an honest account of what he's tried, what might be helping, and the hard lesson of doing exactly the wrong thing the moment he started to feel better.

It's also a reflection on something bigger: building a business — and a life — that keeps running on the days he can't.

Future episodes will go deeper on each of these. For now, this is simply where things stand.

If you're living with an autoimmune or chronic condition, wrestling with the mindset that comes with it, or just trying to build something that outlasts your worst days — this one's for you.

Take care, look after yourselves, and be kind.
