Episode 112: The Wicker Man May 11, 2023
    Show notes

This episode, the Spoop Bois Aaron and Derek cover 1973's British folk horror classic "The Wicker Man" directed by Robin Hardy. They spend a lot of time comparing and contrasting Sgt. Neil Howie and Lord Summerisle and how both are presenting dubious, religious exteriors. They also talk about the influence the film had on folk horror and pop culture, the creation of the fictious community, the menacing acting presence of Sir Christopher Lee, the wild mess of a remake, among many other aspects of the movie. Derek is fine, but his acceptability is limited. Aaron is even better, but not nearly as effective as the right kind of podcaster.

Episode 111: The Evil Dead w/ special guest Kelly Sherman Apr 27, 2023
    Show notes

Guest and friend of the show Kelly returns to talk Sam Raimi's 1981 supernatural horror classic "The Evil Dead" with Aaron and Derek. Derek and Aaron have become hosts to a Kandarian demon. Kelly awakened from his ancient slumber.

They also cover what C.H.U.D. means in and outside the film, references through pop culture, both the disappointment and potential of the concept, and many other aspects of the movie. Derek is a pretty important fella, fella. Aaron's got a flamethrower. James is going to take this to the papers.

    Show notes

This episode, Derek and Aaron get into 1987's neo-noir psychological horror movie "Angel Heart" written and directed by Alan Parker. They talk about Mickey Rourke's noir detective performance, how the film tackles 1950s period piece between New York and New Orleans, and the portrayals of spirituality and religion. They also get into the disturbing nature of the horror by the end, the differences between this adaptation and the book "Falling Angel" by William Hjortsberg, noir versus neo-noir, and many other aspects of the movie. Aaron doesn't know anything, he's from Brooklyn. Derek can be a mouthful in Manhattan.

They discuss how the film deals with Bush-era America and what makes it still relatable, the portrayals of extremism during a societal breakdown, and Darabont's original intention for "The Mist." They also talk about Thomas Jane's career and experiences with King adaptation, differences between the film and novella, and many other aspects of the movie. Put Aaron, Derek, and Evan in a room, they pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think they invented podcasts?

    Episode 107: Eyes Without a Face Feb 23, 2023
    Show notes

This week, Aaron and Derek embrace their inner Martin Scorsese "this is...cinema." They discuss 1960's French horror film "Eyes Without a Face" directed by Georges Franju. They talk about what makes the doctor the true monster, how the surgery scene is still shocking, the influence this movie has had on pop culture, and how it was censored and marketed in the United States. They also get into about Édith Scob's ethereal performance, what makes the ending amazing, and many other aspects of the film. Derek's face frightens him. Aaron's mask frightens him even more.
