Welcome to the Warrior Families Podcast. I’m Karen Bates and I’m on a mission to stop the frustration, controlling, nagging and worry that come into our homes when we misunderstand our role as influencers and supporters of each other’s unique gifts.
I used to worry a lot about making sure my kids did all they were supposed to do. I often felt overwhelmed with the endless tasks of staying afloat in a busy home that was always getting messy,, and guilty because of my inconsistency as I made personal and family goals I didn’t keep.
I knew I fell short of being the kind of mom my kids deserved. I would see such potential when I’d look in their eyes and it caused me to feel deeply inadequate and afraid of failing them.
As I tried to figure out how someone as flawed as I was could possibly give them all they needed, I read hundreds of books on parenting and education, finished my degree in Marriage Family and Human Development, and practiced through Lots of trial and error as I homeschooled 8 kids and ran several educational programs for youth.
I wasn’t perfect at anything I tried, but I came to learn that it was okay, that it was this way because my kids and I were all in this learning process together.
I no longer feel overwhelmed, guilty or inadequate (or at least not nearly as often) because I now focus on simply creating an environment that organically grows me and my kids into our potential.
It’s not a perfect environment, but it has the essentials for human growth: love, light, support, resilience, patience and forgiveness through each other’s many mistakes and weaknesses.
I created this podcast to share what I and others have learned about becoming warrior families who imperfectly, but willingly, use our unique gifts to light the world in these troubled and uncertain times.
So thank you for listening and for being a person who cares enough to seek your part. As we keep having these discussions, we can continue to create homes that inspire warriors to do their part to ease suffering and increase love throughout the world.
