A Blog Post ~ Must Know Teaching Tips

Question: So, trick question. Ready? What is the one thing no educator, no matter what their degree is – has that you don’t have?

Answer: You have more love for your kids then any teacher could possibly have. Therefore you want what is best for your children and homeschooling is one way that you can be sure your children learns what is most important.

    Teaching Tips:

If you’ve decided to homeschool you’ve been over the homeschool laws in your state and fielded questions on socialization. Believe me, homeschool kids don’t have the public / private school’s kids fear of peers and they won’t have the struggles most kids have of feeling they can’t say anything or people will think they are dumb! My five homeschooled kids did not have filters.

They could easily converse with adults or peers and had no difficulty ordering in a restaurant or asking for more ketchup at a fast-food counter. They are all pretty self-sufficient. Down to doing their own laundry and cooking. We made life skills part of their homeschool with chore and responsibility charts.

I never regretted one moment of homeschooling my children or the co-ops where I taught a group of children.

In my homeschool journey, I met people who homeschooled for religious reasons (we didn’t start that way, but ended up that way), those who wanted their children to know their native language as well as English and music as a prerequisite to every other subject, and those who played sports or travelled extensively. I also met people whose sole purpose was for their children to attend an Ivy League College.

Every one of those people (no judgments here) had a reason for homeschooling that was unique and different. So, just because you are listening to this podcast on teaching doesn’t mean you have to agree with every single point, but I do hope it is beneficial for you!

    • A statement of faith is a wonderful using scripture or a family statement of honor
    • Start with prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and memory work age-appropriate
    • Curriculum
    • Homeschool Method
    • Schedule. A list of books, time to teach, etc.
    • Don’t try to duplicate school at home
    • Organize your supplies, books, and materials. Here are some resources on dejunking, time management, organization secrets
    • Plan Outings
    • Plan Your Year Ahead
    • Public Speaking
    • Resources -charts, books biographies, this podcast website!
    • Field Trips
    • Look around you! Everything is school.
    • Online resources and classes.

    Teaching techniques:

I had an amazing college instructor or taught us to find the answers rather than to memorize the work. While this was important pre-dating the digital age in our children’s case it is important to understand that information is important and the application of information is key. Someday our kids will have jobs and the idea that we can find everything online precludes learning. Why remember what we can find with a click of a button. We do not want the information to be dumbed down!

Teaching is basically easy, and people tend to make it difficult.

    • Experiential learning and hands-on for little kids with phonics, and multiple modalities
    • Reading – reading – reading! Silent and out loud. Kids love it.
    • Interest-based learning – allow kids to explore.
    • Teaching using memorization and charts
    • Prepare by reading ahead in textbooks, etc.
    • Student prepared to teach.
    • Textbooks and workbooks/questions that are answered.
    • Unit study. Topic immersion.
    • Presentations.

In today’s climate raising spiritually strong kids has become much more difficult. In this episode, Felice shares some foolproof ways (yes, this is a big promise) and solutions to steering your kids on the path of love, honor, friendship, integrity, compassion, and faith.

Thanks to our sponsor – Overcomer the Movie! In theatres at the end of August 2019 but guess what? The video is available afterward as well. This is one of the must-see movies for families (who love sports) of the year.

Okay, roll up your sleeves we are going to talk basics here – and yes, this works, but it takes work. Pun intended.

Parenting is not for the faint of heart, we’ve heard this over and over again, but it is also not for the lazy, the parent who won’t get up off the couch to discipline a child, or worse yet, a parent who insists on raising free-range kids. Spoiler alert! Free-range kids grow up and they aren’t people that you want to be around!

What do spoiled, undisciplined or free-range kids grow up to be? Adults.

Just from personal experience, I know some of these adults and they know it all, can’t be corrected, are never wrong and don’t apologize. Do you know any of these people? Many, but of course not all are devoid of spirituality.

I’m all for letting kids explore, get dirty, and investigate the world around them, but I am also a realist that knows that at some point I have to let go and let my child, a product of their environment? Psychology calls this nature versus nurture and this has to do with human behavior. The question is human behavior formation is determined by the environment or is it determined by genetics, something we are hard-wired or predisposed to – our biological factors. I personally believe it is a combination of the two.

Kids are going to do what they see you do, not what you tell them they should do. (Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.)

Here is a quick synopsis of Raising Spiritually Strong Kids

    1. Teach them that God did indeed create the world. Not some cosmic mistake.
    2. Pray – teach them to listen to the still, small voice of God. 1 Kinges 19:11-13
    3. Teach them to have a relationship with God.
    4. Read the Bible.
    5. Praise the Lord. Everyday.
    6. Sing/play Christian music.
    7. Surround yourself with Christian art.
    8. Allow your kids to ask you questions
    9. Read Christian books.
    10. Allow faith to become their faith as they grow older.

Spiritually strong kids are the ones who have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I don’t care what Christian denomination you adhere to if your kids don’t have a strong relationship with the Lord they won’t stay strong when they are under pressure to change. Kids are influenced by their peer group. (Story here.)

If Jesus walked in the door, would you drop everything and follow Him?

If you want your kids to pray – teach them how to pray.
If you want your kids to hear God’s voice – teach them how to hear God’s voice. (A thought, a direction to a Scripture in answer to a question, or silence – God is listening. I promise.)
If you want your kids to read the Bible – show them by reading the Bible.
If you want your kids to pray for others – show them by praying for others, closing your eyes, laying on hands (scripture) and pray to the Lord from the heart!

Teach your kids to study the Bible, do a Bible study with your kids. (Homeschooling with Proverbs).
Read faith-filled books to your children. The lives of the Saints, Missionaries, Martyrs for the faith.
Watch movies with faith content -Overcomer. (Cleaning people story.)

You can’t be faint-hearted about this, friends, your kid’s spiritual lives are in danger. The world pulls on them from music to television, video, computer games and more! We need an army of spiritually strong Christian kids. And, it starts with you at home.

Raising Honorable Kids | Raising honorable kids takes work, it doesn't happen overnight! Here are some great tips. | #podcast #homeschoolpodcast #UHPNVHM – Raising Honorable Kids ~ Episode 357

Raising honorable kids takes work, it doesn’t happen overnight! In every generation, I am sure that grandparents comment that they are happy not to be raising kids in this “present” time due to all the horrible things that are happening. In today’s episode, we will discuss some of the pressing concerns for today’s parents along with real help.

Thanks to our sponsor – The Movie Overcomer – as we record this episode the movie won’t be out until August 23, 2019, however – it is not to be missed and is already on my list of movies to purchase! OVERCOMER dares to leave you filled with hope, inspired to dream, and asks the question: what do you allow to define you?

I’m so blessed to promote this movie to all of you!

Every parent fears the will ruin their kids from time to time. As a homeschooling parent, we think, oh my gosh! We are going to miss some part of their education. We run from place to place to be sure our kids don’t miss out on socialization or any of the activities we want them to learn. We want well-rounded kids, kids that are great students and of course, honorable children who love the Lord. Right?

However, you are the perfect parent for your child. Why? Because God doesn’t make mistakes. We make mistakes by our choices or lack of action in working to deal with discipline problems.

Raising Honorable Kids Insights: Read Blog Post here for more.

    1. Kids pick up more from what you do, parents should model good behavior.
    2. Association – who are your kids around? Are they good role models?
    3. Studying people who are honorable.

Stay tuned to this special episode with Jessica Parnell, CEO of Bridgeway Academy.

Emotions Affect Learning – Episode 355

Today we will focus on home emotions affect learning. Do you realize that negative emotions can impair the ability of your child to learn? Today, our expert guest, Jessica Parnell – CEO Bridgeway Academy joins Felice Gerwitz. Jessica explains what this means and how you can use this knowledge to teach your children effectively.

Are you looking for help for the upcoming school year with a curriculum that will be a great fit for your children? Custom curriculum designs and online classes. Thanks to our sponsor! Bridgeway Academy

Here is the first podcast – Tap Into Your Learning Potential with Jessica Parnell – a lot of great explanation about terminology.

Some of the questions we discussed:

    1. What part of the brain is affected by emotions?
    2. Can a child who is frustrated or upset learn?
    3. How do we help kids settle down when their emotions are high?
    4. What are some ways we can help kids reappraise?

When we are upset our brains are set for fight or flight, Kids who are struggling are approaching learning with stress and it can compound when our emotions rise. We can’t think when we are angry, and often things are said in anger that would never be said when we are calm.

When you are emotional – you can not think.

What triggers emotion? We need to be aware of this because it is different for everyone. A difficult subject can trigger an emotional response. Driving in traffic is another trigger for an adult. Think about it and think about your children and when they get upset.

    Emotions and Learning;

    1. Threat to status
    2. Uncertainty – lack of certainty can put kids on edge. Consistency is important. With certainty, the child has an understanding of what he/she is supposed to do, and children need certainty to feel secure. You are meeting a child where they are.
    3. Autonomy – one of the greatest gift we can give to our children is ownership. Letting them step up to do things, this gives them a sense of autonomy and preparing them for life! It will short circuit an emotional trigger that may lead to a lack of self-control. Staying ahead can help them build the tools to keep them under self-control.

    Calm Kids

    1. One strategy is labeling. Speak what they are feeling, this engages the thinking part of their brain which dampens emotions. This also encourages self-control
    2. Help kids refrain from what they are doing. Time for a break Refrain from the emotional outburst. Sometimes we battle to get a lesson completed.
    3. Stop and come back to it later

Emotions Effect Learning And Battles Don’t Help!

    1. When we battle it doesn’t help kids to stay calm, or have self-control
    2. Don’t push it – but do come back to it.
    3. When emotions are high kids can’t comprehend.
    4. When emotions are high parents and kids become tense and affect the household

    What works:

    1. Sometimes changing the schedule really helps.
    2. Do come back to it after the kids have moved around, this helps their learning

    Remember:

    1. Our kids have been designed for a purpose.
    2. Philippians 4:8 – One of Jessica’s favorite verse.
    3. We can program ourselves to look at our kids in a negative way and instead of a positive way
    4. We need to discipline those things that are not good, but we don’t want to use the negative to identify our children

Reappraisal Helps Our Kids Control Emotions

    1. Strategy for helping our kids get under control, it is a cognitive change. When our kids do get under control they suppress emotions (emotion is still there and there is pressure) instead of reappraising.
    2. Change through a cognitive change – what will we do to shift that emotion to something else. Allows thinking clearly.
    3. When frustrated make a cognitive change that can be taking a break. Let’s talk about it and talk about approaching it first. It helps us when we are under stress.
    4. Reappraisal dampens our emotions. We don’t need to be upset.

If you have trouble getting emotions under control

    1. The number way to regulate emotions is to control yourself.
    2. Use these tools
    3. Talk to someone
    4. Get a support network
    5. When the home is calm it makes all the difference in your homeschool efforts.

Did you know you can tap into your learning potential by understanding how the brain works? Felice Gerwitz and Jessica Parnell, CEO of Bridgeway Academy explain how a parent can benefit from this information.

Thanks to our sponsor! Bridgeway Academy, your solution to online education and help for the homeschool moms.

The brain is creating new neuro-pathways throughout your entire life. Studies show what parts of the brain are engaging as kids learn. Learning disabilities can be repaired through new neuro-pathways and the science behind education. Homeschool parents especially have the ability to tap into your child’s potential!

    Working Memory:

The working memory is a term used for the pre-frontal cortex. It is responsible for conscious thought is highly important for education. This is important for learning for self-control.

    • Making decisions
    • Understanding
    • Recalling
    • Deciding
    • Self-control
    • Memory
    • Imagination

By understanding the effects of the brain’s working memory you can tap into your child’s learning potential.

Every single decision taxes our working memory.

    • Know those energy-sapping subjects for students.
    • Mix up how we use our brain, put in other subjects that are not as taxing
    • Small break replenishes the brain. 5-10 minutes…and add movement…
    • Move! That helps your working memory. Moving the spine sending new electrical signals up to their brain and getting it to think again.

Knowing Your Learning Style Helps – Ways to Help Retain Information.

    • Students learn differently
    • Need ways to get information off of working memory so that you can process – getting them off the pre-frontal cortex
    • Write down your information so your working memory is free
    • Developing metaphors, telling stories, engage the emotional side of the brain.

Basal Ganglia – Helps Preserve Working Memory

    • Drives habits
    • Things we turn into habits
    • So much more powerful and it does not take so much energy
    • Flashcards – get into basal ganglia becomes instinctive and routine, you are not taxing your brain so you can do more complex challenging tasks

Tap Into Your Learning Potential – Does the digital age help?

    • We are becoming dependent on that quick answer to things.
    • We are not developing to skills to see if the answer is correct.
    • Lack of focus and scattered attention span.
    • The social aspect has become difficult – skills learned in interaction are different than sending a text.

Our children, whether we are aware of it or not are affected by indoctrination through education!

Indoctrination Through Education – Episode 353

We homeschool for many different reasons. I began homeschooling because my son was having difficulty learning and I happened to be an educator with a certification in specific learning disabilities and early childhood education. However, my reasons for homeschooling my subsequent children all had to do with religious reasons. I wanted to teach my children to think for themselves, be grounded in Scripture and allow them access to books that would stretch them academically and the ability to have time to think. If you have listened to my podcasts this is one thing I talk about often, the ability for children to think!

Thinking is an art as well as reason. Our children need to learn how to discern what they hear and how to make decisions for themselves. Does this mean we abdicate our role as parents? Absolutely not!

Indoctrination through education is happening in the local public schools, private schools, universities and colleges as well as the charter schools or online schools that are government-funded. What is indoctrination? I believe the terminology of the past has changed, indoctrination on the left or the right is often bantered around, but indoctrination is the repetition of philosophy or ideology that if repeated enough is believed as truth. Indoctrination happens when kids don’t think for themselves. Indoctrination happens when there is an absence of thought!

Even Hitler realized this when he was quoted as saying, “Slogans should be persistently repeated until the very last individual has come to grasp the idea.” (He wrote in Mein Kampf.)

We hear it all the time, slogans and sound bites. We believe things that are not true. Need an example? “We only use 10% of our brains,” is an untruth that many people believe.

David Coleman, who graduated from Yale graduate and was a Rhodes Scholar is the architect of Common Core. While this podcast is not addressing Common Core in detail, know that he has set out along with a group of “education reformers” to change the landscape of American Education, which most of us believe is for the worse. In a nutshell, Common Core teaches kids to think about thinking (and causes confusion) while it pushes kids to learn — or the “process of learning” it is all meaningless. The result is kids who don’t care. For example, look at common core math problems that have made their rounds on social media. The false news surrounding this graphic I am using as an example is that it says it will teach the kids crucial problem-solving skills. All it does is confuse kids. Here is a sample graphic.

    Keys To Indoctrination In Education:

    1. Mediocre and confusing education
      • Dummy down curriculum – think Common Core
      • Feelings vs. learning – not a combination of the two
      • Kids don’t care
      • No freedom of thought
    2. Polarization and Tribal Mentality
      • Following the familiar
      • Following the crowd
      • Believing what you hear repeated
      • No facts or reason – only feelings
      • Illusionary truth effect
    3. Revisionist History
      • Falsifying facts with agendas (homophobe and white nationalism cliches)
      • Facts distorted
      • American is portrayed as a ruthless nation while other nations are elevated
      • The world stage is exalted with other nations held up as sterling examples

Absolutes are given a backstage in the classroom, movies, and in social media, it is frowned upon! There are no absolutes only relativism. There is no independent thought only skills without content-driven outcomes. Kids are trained in the process of doing math, not on the math facts themselves. After all, we have smartphones and Google to help with our answers. Right?

Help! How Do We Combat Indoctrination In Education?

    1. Teach Kids To Have Independent Thoughts
      • Present ideas and allow for discussion.
      • Open-ended discussions
      • Allow for thoughts that may conflict with yours
      • Expect factual representation
    2. Questions
      • Ask why
      • Multiple sources of reference
      • Primary sources and documents
    3. Educated Teachers
      • Parents, know your stuff!
      • Clear understanding and though
      • Simplify
      • Defend position

A person who thinks will realize when they are being taught propaganda. (Creationism vs. Evolution.) If kids receive information passively it doesn’t matter what you teach them, they will not be in a position to learn. For example fiction, and the humanities has been removed from most curriculums and the richness of language is all but forgotten. (Truth Seekers Mystery Series – fiction with fact.)

Until we teach our children to question, to think for themselves and to ground their beliefs in truth (God), we will have a fallen generation that is indoctrinated by the things they hear in the media (soundbites over and over again) without caring to learn what really matters.

An honest portrayal of one mom’s journey to a military mom to be. Most of us can agree that the military is much needed for the safety of any nation and those who serve are serving our country have chosen a noble cause. In this podcast, Felice shares her experiences with her child, the recruiter and perhaps sheds some light on the process which is a journey for military mom or dad to be.

About six or so months ago my son told us (my husband and I) that he had signed up for the military – ROTC Army that is in college. To say I was blindsided is putting it mildly. When I asked him why he gave us no indication of his interest to join the military previously, he said that it was because he was unsure and until he had prayed and researched, he didn’t want to cause us undue concern.

While that is a good reason, I was still surprised. My husband, on the other hand, was very encouraging and kept telling him to “look into it further,” while I knew that this was more than just research in my son’s mind.

I think the men and women who serve in the military are noble and they all have my respect. But, as a military mom to be I was… frightened. What did this mean? How many years? When do you go? Etc.

And eight years! Four years were active duty and four years could be in the reserves, except for a time of war and then the military had the option of calling you in for active duty. One of my concerns was that an eighteen-year-old could be making plans three years in advance for another eight years of his life. How would you know if you felt the same way in three years?

So, my mind started swirling and the research began in earnest.

I knew about ROTC – we had it in high school, even back in the dark ages when I attended school. I didn’t know the difference between enlisted (someone who goes to a military office and “sign’s up) and College ROTC – graduating with your college degree and entering the military as a 2nd lieutenant. (1st lieutenant is a higher rank).

Military Primer 101 – there are five branches of the military in the USA. They are Army, Navy, Airforce Marines and Coast Guard. All of the branches have a different focus while the goal remains to keep America safe from the enemy. A very noble cause. I have linked to each of the branches of the military where you can learn more about each branch, for my purposes the only one that I was interested in researching was the Army, my son’s choice.

Disclaimer: Please check with your child’s school and recruiter for information specific to your school or situation!

    So, the questions began.

    1. Did you sign up for Army ROTC at your school because that was the only branch offered? (Answer: No. I always thought I’d enter the Army if I had to select a branch of the military.)
    2. Why do you want to serve in the Army? (Answer: to serve our country) [How do you argue with a noble cause?]
    3. Did you feel pressured into signing up for the ROTC? (Answer: No.)

My son explained and answered additional questions but the only ones I was interested in was the exit plan. And, those questions were not any that he was interested in and so while he answered the questions I felt that the answers did not satisfy my concerns. So, I asked how he felt about me talking to his recruiter. He was fine with it and so, I got together a list of questions to ask.

When I spoke to the woman at the school recruiting office she was wonderful, kind and understanding. She had served in the Army right out of high school. She said if she had to do it again she would have gone to college first, yet here experiences were very positive. She has a child who is joining the Army as well. As a mom, she had to leave children behind when she was deployed and she shared some of her story with me. She was very open to my questions.

And my questions were different than my son’s basically exit strategy questions.

    1. What happens if my freshman son switched colleges, he is still obligated to join the Army?
    2. Scholarships? They only applied to his major at that school – so transferring would negate that as well.
    3. How many years? Is it really 4 of active duty and 4 in reserves?!
    4. If my son went to Basic Camp (not boot camp for college kids), does that mean he was signed up to go with no ability to say no?
    5. When my son entered – if he decided to go ahead, where would he be placed? Did he have a choice?
    6. What if he was drafted by a professional team? What would that mean?
    7. When was the final time to make a commitment?
    8. If he didn’t want scholarship money did he have to take it?
    9. If he did accept scholarship money and decided not to enter would he have to pay it back?
    10. Want a law or medical degree? That is fine but you will owe more years. (I did not ask about scholarship opportunities here, but I do know depending on your grades they are available.)

I’m a little more at peace with the entire situation now that I have more information. While my son’s idea is to graduate and join the Army, as a military mom to be he has to forgive me if my goals are not the same as his. He is eighteen and my husband and I raised an amazing young man. He loves the Lord, he is personable and kind, smart, competitive, a great athlete, strong-willed and outspoken and rarely does not have an opinion about something. As the youngest he is tough and his siblings give him a hard time every chance they get.

Parents we each have our own goals and ideas about what our kids should do, what they should achieve and how they should live their lives but I’ve never been one of those parents that insist that “my will be done!” Yet, I found myself leaning toward that parent I did not want to be!

I’m sharing my journey with you and I ask that you keep us in prayer, that you share your stories – positive ones are very much appreciated!

Best Staycations For Kids | What are the best staycations for kids? Well, glad you asked! My twelve-year-old granddaughter wrote an article here about Staycations For Kids! I can’t wait to share with you some of her ideas, her reasons for staycations | #podcast #homeschoolpodcast #vacation #staycationBest Staycations Just For Kids Episode 350

What are the best staycations for kids? Well, glad you asked! My twelve-year-old granddaughter wrote an article here about Staycations For Kids! I can’t wait to share with you some of her ideas, her reasons for staycations – and some kid-friendly ideas. If you want to read her blog post it is here.

As I shared in my two other podcasts on this topic, why take a staycation and how to plan for a staycation, it is so much less stressful to plan to vacation around your own zip code. It obviously can be cheaper but you can use that money to buy some play equipment like a trampoline or perhaps a slip and slide. It doesn’t need to be extravagant.

Kids love to have a good time and if we (parents) are in a good frame of mind the vacation will go much better. I remember traveling to Virginia for a trip to DC to see the Smithsonian Museums, Williamsburg and then up to the mountains on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We had children five children, four months to nineteen with us. The trip was costly, my husband lost ten days of work (he is self-employed but lost a big contract with another builder because his crew messed up something in his absence), and I was exhausted when I got home. We did have a good time and the sights were amazing, but for use, it was a once-in-a-lifetime-with-all-the-kids visit.

The great thing is you don’t have to do this all at once – you staycations can happen all year long, so be sure to take out the calendar an plan it!

So, what are some of my favorite summer staycations for kids? My grandaughter’s list included:

    • The Zoo with some fun ideas such as play games.
    • Visits to the Museum – with a game such as a treasure hunt looking for specific things
    • Camp-In complete with camping “foods” and games.
    • The beach or park
    • Family Sports Team – weekly

Our family has hosted staycations for years. Best Staycations For Kids Include:

    1. Theme parks state resident passes
    2. Camping – we were able to camp near home on a waterway that was inexpensive
    3. Parks
    4. Night events (it’s cooler)
    5. Marathon movies at home w/ snacks and popcorn
    6. Canoe/kayak
    7. Guided boat trips – backwater to see water life, manatees, dolphins, etc.

Best Staycations For Kids – Day Trips.

What is nearby that you can visit in a day and come back home? Around my area there is:

    • Theme parks
    • Historical Museums
    • Thomas Edison’s Winter Home
    • Henry Ford’s Winter Home
    • Native People (Indians) Mounds and Digs
    • Shell Museum (2)
    • An Island – (2)
    • Baseball Stadiums (2)
    • Beaches
    • Jet skis
    • Parasailing
    • Ice Skating
    • Alligator Farm
    • Airboat Rides
    • Nature trails
    • Nature Museums
    • Ding Darling Nature Preserve
    • Planetarium
    • Campground

What is in your area? Have you really thought about it and planned out a vacation? If we wanted to do all of the things on my list we would not have enough weekend time.

Have you looked at online resources? Did you know you can find the following online?

    • Smithsonian exhibits: (Here – https://www.si.edu/learn-explore)
    • Visit the globe – Google Earth: https://www.google.com/earth/
    • Live Cams of Animals: https://explore.org/livecams
    • Space Station/ NASA: https://nasa.gov
    • Presidential Information: https://www.whitehouse.gov/
    • Whitehouse: https://www.whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/the-white-house/

Helpful Advice For The Best Staycations For Kids:

    • Budget your time. Be sure to have snacks on hand, plenty of water, and time out for lunch.
    • Naptimes – consider this when planning a staycation.
    • These are the best and you can go back home at night.
    • Kids love to touch things so for little ones be sure the exhibits are things they can touch
    • Let the kids take pictures.
    • Have a plan. Whether it is time for a packed lunch or time allotted for the visit.
    • Check the weather a few days ahead and make alternative plans if the weather is bad.
    • Create memory books of the places you visited or things you did.
