We all make mistakes teaching math but in this episode, we will learn that these can be overcome. Today’s guest is CTCMath and spokesperson Nadim El-Rahi.

Thanks to our sponsor CTC Math.com

    CTCMath.com | Math Curriculum

Not being a great math student until I became a homeschool mom, I was interested in what CTCMath had to offer. My guest Nadim was a student of the founder. Pat Murray. Pat was Nadim’s high school math teacher. The two formed a bond and kept in touch. Years later, Nadim would work with CTCMath. Pat teaches the online courses, and there ‘is also a free trial that you can do. The trial gives the user a little bit about the different lessons, to test out the system before you buy, which is wonderful. That’s CTC math.com, but we’re going to talk about some of the most prominent mistake teachers make when teaching math. And so you’re going to share that with us.

    Mistakes Teaching Math:

    1. The biggest teaching mistake the long drawn out explanation. Sometimes as parents, homeschool parents, and teachers, we think that more information is better and it’s actually the opposite. Students can often get lost and confused in a long, drawn-out explanation. So if we can just keep the teaching to a short, concise explanation that’s best and most effective when, when it comes to teaching math, um, you can use your time. There may be twenty minutes of explanation and then ten minutes of practice problems. Well, that time is probably better spent doing five-minutes of explanation and twenty-five minutes of practice problems. Complicated explanations that show too many diverse methods is also an issue. We think that if we equip the children with more information, it’s going to lead to, better grades and a better toolkit, but often students just need the one method, the simplest method, the easiest methods for them to understand now is that first method doesn’t work. You might want to try a second method, but the risks can sometimes be that we show the students too many diverse methods and that can often complicate them. And you see it in, in advancements in the curriculum and changes in curriculum and current eyes, uh, traditionally used to be just the traditional methods that were taught. So more and more you see these popping up.
    2. Another of the mistakes teaching math is thinking rote learning is a bad idea. That students need only to use discovery learning and believing the hype around the need to discover things and conceptualize things on their own. I’m sure it has its place, at an age-appropriate time. But I always use the analogy of a Rubik’s cube. You can give a child a Rubik cube and tell them to solve it. They’re going to spend hours and hours and hours trying to work it out. And most of the time they will probably give it up. But you can show them a simple algorithm and a simple way to solve the root issue. Now, once they’ve done that and I’ve worked out how to do it using the simple pattern, you can see that confidence is lifted. They want to find a bigger Rubik Cube, and they want to go on and do more. And maybe that’s when you allow the discovery learning to take place. It is very important in the early grade levels, ensuring that students can instantly recall their math facts. It builds confidence and sets them up for later years too, to really enjoy math more. So this idea that discovery learning and children really need to, to work it out on their own, I think is, is a big hype. That’s, beating a lot of confidence in children. But I think the important thing is to learn what your child likes. And then it’s almost like love languages, you know, working out your child’s love language will work out what component of math they enjoy and really pursuing it.
    3. Math is not enjoyable. I think the feedback that we get is confidence is that their confidence is down, is that they no longer enjoy math is that it’s difficult. We, as parents and educators have to work how are we going to get their confidence back up? How are we going to try to make math more enjoyable? And often it’s through the understanding of math. When I started to understand it you will see light bulbs and the aha moments begin to click and they want to do more and more of it, then we hear from countless parents that we can’t get them off the math anymore. So it’s really figuring out how to get their confidence up, how to get them really enjoying math again through understanding.

On a side note, the homeschooling movement in Australia is wonderful and growing. The homeschool community is building and growing. The creator of CTCMath, Pat Murray, homeschooled their children.

Five Things Josh Harris Forgot Sep 06, 2019

Josh Harris | This is not a show that will bash Josh Harris, a previous bestseller, Christian pastor and evangelical leader and author of books that many Christians and many homeschoolers loved. What I will do is point out the five things I believe he forgot in his journey from seeking what people thought about his book. | #podcast #homeschoolpodcast #ikisseddatinggoodbye #joshharrisFive Things Josh Harris Forgot Episode 368

This is not a show that will bash Josh Harris, a previous bestseller, Christian pastor and evangelical leader and author of books that many Christians and many homeschoolers loved. What I will do is point out the five things I believe he forgot in his journey from seeking what people thought about his book.

Thanks to our sponsor – CTCMath.com

My heart grieves for Josh Harris and I will share why in a bit, but as I think about his situation there are some major points I feel he completely forgot. I have not watched his entire documentary that was filmed with clips from the people he interviewed that were harmed or liked his book, mostly it was the latter as the title is, “I Survived I Kissed Dating Goodbye.” He apologizes in the film and I think apologies are always good, they are freeing but he is personally taking responsibility for a movement that flamed within many Evangelical churches that he truly had no idea would happen.

Point #1 – People Have Free Will.

Sorry. God gave us free will. Each person who read your book made a decision to follow your advice or not. People need to take responsibility for their own actions – there is a lacking of this in our society.

As an author I have first-hand experience with this, having written many books from 1994 to the present day. Years ago, my daughter and I co-authored the Truth Seekers Mystery Series. These are action-adventure novels, that focus on archaeology, paleontology, and anthropology. We called them Truth Seekers because we wanted our readers to seek truth in their lives, the dialogue contained both sides of an argument with both teens and adults.

I taught my children to learn by investigating, asking questions and research from three primary sources. I didn’t want them to read someone else’s interpretation of what happened, which is why I will give a link to the statement Josh Harris made about his book. Here is his official statement.

Point #2 – Do Not Throw Out The Baby With The Bath Water

We had two books that Josh Harris wrote. The first is, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” and the second one “Boy Meets Girl,” a quick search shows the Kindle version received 366 stars on Amazon that resulted in a rating of 4.6 stars. Not bad. He had good information to share and I think what I liked about his books is his authenticity in sharing his struggle and his ultimate victory in what he believed was an ideal method for dating.

Josh wrote an apology in his statement that said, in essence, if I hurt you I’m sorry and if I helped you I am happy. But, because I think this is flawed, I’m pulling sales of the book.

We read the books and felt that parts of the books made great sense. The part, we as a family liked is that teen dating and breaking up had become an epidemic that set kids up for heartbreak at a young age. We never told our kids, you have to do this, or this is our family rule. We said, “What do you think.” Of course the twelve-year-old thought it was great advice and then as she matured and was eighteen, she asked for some leeway which we gave her.

My parents were super strict, they didn’t let me date in high school other than one prom date (that my father accepted for me) when I was a Senior in High school–and not with the person I wanted to go with, you have to read my book, One More Child to hear that story.) However, I didn’t want to be as strict as my parents but I did want some parameters and I thought Josh’s book did that well.

I would never credit him for my success or failure in parenting because I read his books and encouraged my kids to read them. I think his book contained caution for a world that is hurting. Why not put out a revised edition with some cautions? Why ax it totally? I can’t answer that question.

Point #3 – Love Comes From Above First Before It Comes From Within

The source of all love comes from above and once we know God we can have this love within and then share it with others. We have to pray and search our hearts for what God calls us to do, should we marry, go into ministry, be celibate. It is a personal relationship. I know that some people, some churches took his information as the gospel truth without looking at the gospel. A book can guide but it can not make someone do something, point number one!

Point #4 – No One In This World Can Always Make You Happy

I think a bunch of criticism is that his book taught a method that people followed and had a disastrous outcome, while some said his method worked. But the main point is that no person on earth can fill that void that belongs to God. God created us to love Him, and if we do not love Him first, we will always seek for that true love that will never be fulfilling.

Point #5 -Applying The Bible To Dating Is A Good Idea

God gave us life and we, as thankful Christians should look to the Word of God in the Bible for advice. God said, “…go forth and multiply…” He didn’t give us a direct path, but if we proceed based on the love of God and His will for our life no matter what happens we will always have God. That makes no sense to someone who is not a Christian or who doesn’t have a relationship with God. When Harris wrote the book he was committed and he loved the Lord and wrote what he felt the Lord was teaching. It is up to each individual (read point one above) to pray, discern and seek God. Even life’s rejections can be a learning tool and healing for all of us.

Unfortunately, I read that Josh and his wife are getting a divorce and for this, I grieve. I will pray for him, for her, for their children. Divorce is heartbreaking no matter who it happens to and is never a cause to rejoice or point fingers.

Friends, what we can learn is that while books are great for teaching and even sermons, teachings, podcasts, etc., it is important to have a spirit of discernment (which is free by the way, just pray for it!) and critical thinking, and making up our own decisions. I pray that a new generation of young people do not think his apology means that everything is wrong with waiting to date, to kiss and to have intimate relationships until we get married.

I’ll leave you with one thought before we point to others with blame take a hard look at yourself. Take responsibility for your own actions! Look at your relationship with God and your hopes and dreams. Do you even know what you believe? Do you have a firm foundation in Christ. If not, get on your knees and pray. It begins with one person. You. And it begins today.

Are you new to homeschooling, or perhaps entering those high school years? Do you wonder how to homeschool high school? In this episode, Felice Gerwitz and Vicki Tillman (The Homeschool Highschool Podcast) discuss how to get started and the information you need to know!

SO you want to know how to homeschool high school…well, you came to the right place. Today’s wonderful guest is a supercharged knowledge bank of information, Vicki Tillman!

Be sure to check out Vicki’s list for high school students to discern what track they should take.

    CTCMath.com | Math Curriculum

Vicki Tillman does everything homeschool highschool! Transcripts, encouragement, and everything in between. Vicki started homeschooling about thirty years ago and times have changed yet if there were not opportunities they started them. If there were enough of us moms we’d start co-ops or debate teams or cinematography teams and, choirs. We began an umbrella school that was registered with the state of Delaware so that the high schoolers could get a transcript approved by the state.

Homeschooling opens doors. What the universities have found in this early generation, especially my older kids is that homeschoolers know how to rock things. They know how to study, they know how to motivate themselves and they actually often have better social skills than their traditionally schooled peers. So they often were campus leaders in organizations. That is so true.

Yet parents have so many questions:

    1. Will this work for us?
    2. Is this something that will be longterm?
    3. Will our kids be able to get into colleges?
    4. What kind of transcripts do I need?
    5. Where can we get our books?

How do you start homeschool high school?

    1. Start by joining the homeschool legal defense organization HSLDA.org
      • At the HSLDA website, they have all the information for state requirements for high school.
    2. There is no one right way to homeschool. All kids are different. What works for one may not work for the others.
    3. If the student needs a transcript, they need to have a piece of paper that they graduate with that will follow them to college or even into the workforce. Employers can ask for them even ten years later
    4. Know what credits you need to graduate.
      • Typically four language arts credits, between two and four maths according to what their goals are and what the state wants. They’ll need somewhere between two to four sciences. And the same with social studies. They usually need a couple of world languages. Phys ed, usually a health and then usually a fine arts credit.
      • Every state varies. That’s why we send you to HSLDA, look at their state map for more information about your particular state.
      • Sometimes God calls some kids to go into the trades or into some kind of artisan work. If that is the case they don’t need to kill themselves doing super-duper academics in high school.
      • The college-bound kids, especially if they’re going after scholarships or going to a state or a more competitive college, will want to go to the high end of things and do more vigorous curriculum.

    Overview of Four Years:

    1. Go over this with your teens. Sit down and discuss it, what you want to have accomplished by the time they graduate.
    2. Knowing how many maths, if they’re going to a competitive college, then they need all four math.
      • So they’ll need Algebra one to Geometry, Precalc or if they’re going into a stem subject, they need the Algebra in, in middle school and go for the higher math and as Statistics.
    3. For Literature. Ask do you want a free for all literature where the kids just randomly pick and you pick and you have a mixture of, of different kinds of literature? Or do you want to focus on American Lit, one year in British Lit, one year in a whole year of CS Lewis, American or World Literature? You can even concentrate on poetry for a year.
    4. There is no one right way to homeschool high school. You can focus on a student’s interests. For example the histories, etc.

    Career Exploration ~

Here is a list of questions high school students can ask themselves, pray and think about, from Vicki Tillman!

    1. What are my strengths?
    2. What are my weaknesses?
    3. What is important to me? (education, just enough education, LOTS of education, working with my hands, serving my country, 9-5 working hours, travel, time for family and friends, climbing the corporate ladder, fame, predictability, time for church and volunteering, good benefits?)
    4. What things have I done in life already that are interesting? (Career-focused or not)
    5. Who are the most influential people in my life? What do they do for a career and volunteering?
    6. What has God already shown me about me? (Career-related or not)
    7. What careers might be interesting to me? (Do I already know? If not, what can I do to try on some new hats? Field trips? Volunteering at new places? Reading some biographies? Interviewing people in various jobs?)

Thanks so much to Fitness Latinos our sponsor! Please visit the website here: VISIT Fitness Latinos here

An informational video about the product is here: VIDEO Here

    About Alba Alonso

    • Her first language was Spanish. She lived in Colombia in South America for her first 10 years. She learned English during her middle and high school years and moved from Miami to Oregon and went on to college in South Carolina. You can say she has tasted a little bit of our US culture in a short time!

She gave up a career as a marketing coordinator for an international architecture firm to be a stay-at-home mom and homeschooled her two children for the next 20 years. When her firstborn was eight years old her friends began to take an interest in learning Spanish. The first year her homeschool coop started with twenty students!

Alba is the founder of an all-male Hispanic soccer league, has been an interpreter and was the co-host of Mom’s Homeroom, a parenting web show. Thirty-eight years after having moved to the US she has poured her life’s experience into her online business Fitness Latinos where she teaches Spanish and English in a practical way that will commit learning the foreign language in a personal and permanent way.

She believes you have to define your “WHY?” before you learn to enjoy the journey. Her life’s motto is, “Transformation Through Education and Each One Teach One.”

Handout from Level 1 & 2 Syllabi and Benefits

Top Six Benefits of Learning Spanish

    1. Inspire – Your journey will inspire others to be courageous and to step out of the mundane routine of life and get to know someone new and exciting.
    2. Fun – The study of a new language helps us be able to navigate outside the tourist bubble, to connect and interact with the place and its people in a way that is typically not accessible to those without the language.
    3. Appreciate –We begin to appreciate other traditions, mannerisms, and cultures. We develop a greater acceptance of others and we learn to have empathy for humanity.
    4. Health – Highly successful people exercise because exercise keeps the brain healthy, reduces stress, helps improve memory, creativity, concentration, problem-solving skills, we can multitask better and we become better listeners.
    5. Connect – We become someone who can connect at a deeper level with others simply because we are more in tune with the differences we each possess.
    6. Challenge – Our motto is “Through language, we communicate, through actions we connect.” Our weekly challenge will encourage you to have the courage to make new friends one step at a time.

By nature, learning our native language or foreign language is elementary. The same way we learned to say hello, learned our colors, numbers, and animals in our mother tongue is the way we instruct students to learn a foreign language. Even if you have some knowledge of Spanish or English but you cannot carry or understand a simple conversation with a foreign speaker then you need to go back and master the basics. By the end of our 1st level course, you will be able to understand your GPS in Spanish or at least give someone directions.

You will understand cognates, articles, nouns, and 50 verbs. Our 2nd level will help our students have a full conversation using feelings, sports, professions, opposites, as well as learn cognates, nouns, prepositions, interrogatives, and 50 verbs. In addition, we give our students specific websites they can focus on to take ownership over their future studies. Learning how to conjugate in different tenses is more advanced and requires different examples best learned one on without stress.

It is important for students to read, write, hear and physically practice the language in a fun environment. There are 22 lessons with written instructions, a video with me pronouncing the vocabulary for the week and a challenge for the week. Some of the challenges are right in your own home and some require you to go to a local store and ask for help.

We have to live with the end in mind. No one lives a happy life without these three: love, purpose, and support. We need more than theoretical knowledge, we need to challenge ourselves to gain practical knowledge. The best way is through relationships. In each lesson’s video, I give my students tips on how to break out of that shyness, fear, lack of interest and truly experience how easy it is to learn Spanish or English. Through weekly assignments that include: family, friends and their community, they will retain the vocabulary for the week for years like my past students.

We have combined effective linear learning (as in one theme per week which is curriculum controlled) and flexible learning (where the environment is learner controlled) and coupled it with motivation to help decrease stress and master cognitive load. The weekly assignments connect our students peer to peer in their own community, something that no computer software can do. We lead the way for better relationship habits in all areas of life.

Nikki was nominated for Disney Teacher of the year award, and writing is her passion. She won several grants and loves teaching. She has taught Kindergarten to Second Grade.

    Project-Based Learning with Wonder Bubbles:

    1. Choice and voice: With Wonder Bubbles, you take that topic and make it their own. A concept known as “choice and voice” – allowing the children to pick a topic and give “voice” to their opinions is easily done with this concept.
    2. Children select their topic: Through a study, of a topic that a child selects they learn about it and will embrace it more than if a teacher just assigns a project.
    3. Inspires learning: With Wonder Bubbles, the kids are so excited and it inspires the kids to learn.
    4. Implements other subjects such as science, history, reading, writing, art (drawing or diagraming), creativity, etc.

It allows for a connection that is vital. It takes a month to complete a project since there are other academics But as a homeschool parent you can make it work for you and your schedule. (Nikki uses this as a classroom teacher and uses this connection with her class to set the stage for the year. She explains it like a team-building activity.)

Exactly what is a Wonder Bubble?

A Wonder Bubble is a great way to teach nonfiction with text features. It uses topics, subjects or anything a child is interested in learning more about. It puts the fun back into the research. The idea is to wonder, and think about a topic.

    1. It gives the kids something to “wonder about”
    2. It develops open-ended questions higher order thinking questions with the child.
    3. Provides a published project, something tangible they can put up in their bedroom and show their friends and parents
    4. Accomplishment

    How to begin:

    1. The kids begin with a topic or a question. (For younger children, K-2nd help them narrow down the topic or the subject then allow time for research.
    2. Begin with a question or a topic. For example, maybe the child is interested in animals
    3. Once they decide on “animals” you present them with different habitats. Once they choose a habitat, for example, oceans you can narrow it down from there.
    4. Present the child with research (library, books you may have at home, magazines, internet) about the different type of animals in that habitat until they decide on one.
    5. Then they decide on a question about this animal. Their questions may not be from a topic or a subject, but listen, what is on their mind, what are you wondering about? Some of the things that older kids have researched before would be how do flies walk on the ceiling? Can computers get faster? Are we at the limit of where we’re going to be with technology? How, how do we beat bacteria? What is consciousness? Why do we dream? (These are questions that typically an older child may have. Give them think time to come up with questions.

    Charts to spark questions:

Nonfiction Feature How It Helps The Reader
    Diagram with labels
    • Helps you understand the parts
    Close –up use detail pictures
    • Helps you see close up
    • How it works

    Feature
    • Helps let you see what’s going on inside
    Timeline
    • Shows their life in order

    • Tells you all of the fun information

    Supplies for Wonder Bubbles:

    1. Poser board
    2. Markers
    3. Construction Paper – make shapes or circles, “bubbles”

This is a great fit with homeschooling because you can use as a basis for presentations from information learned from units studies or a topic you are studying, and by asking questions it will get the kids really excited. Nikki shares many more details in the audio!

Coach Layton emphasizes family. He says kids are a product of their families, school and then team. He goes on to explain that sports help you grow as an individual and that dedication is giving 110%. He said school is the most important because sports is on a volunteer basis. Kids are not getting paid to play, they volunteer.

Good sportsmanship focuses on accountability as well. Kids are accountable to do their part, and each member does their part, even the coach. Working hard is part of what is expected by any good coach of their players. When pushed to the threshold a student-athlete may feel like quitting. Yet once you get through it that is where the fun starts!

Kids practice and practice and then it comes naturally in a game, and that is the success of all that work, a good job done.

Good sportsmanship begins on the field but is carried on into life~and with great coaches like Andrew who are supportive of the kids, it is a win-win!

Is memory work necessary? In my teaching life and as a homeschooler I wasn’t positive that memory work was a must. With my first two children, it wasn’t but then with my last three homeschooling students, it became part of the fabric of our homeschooler. Join Felice with special guest Laura Murfin.

    All About Teaching:

A Blog Post ~ Must Know Teaching Tips

Laura Murfin has enjoyed homeschooling her six daughters for eleven years, along with her husband. The girls play soccer and are busy with church activities – as well as homeschool co-ops. Laura believes homeschooling is one of the best-kept secrets! It was a scary idea for her, but now it is a huge blessing!

Laura began researching homeschooling and she and her husband were convinced that homeschooling was the right option for their family. She has appreciated the flexibility as their family grows and that homeschooling is affordable.

Key To Homeschooling – Memory Work Customized Curriculum

Kids memorize easily, Laura shares a story about her kids memorized a Bible story she read to them every night. This sparked the idea of memory work when they were younger and continues now into their high school years. She learned about a group of moms who had developed a full memory work curriculum.

They had hired a professional singer to put the words into tunes. It was the perfect fit for her family. Her children say that they are so grateful that the family used memory work. It helped them with harder classes like Algebra II and Chemistry.

How Does Memory Work Help Kids:

    1. Listening to the memory work songs a little bit every day
    2. Picture supplements – historical portraits, or pictures about what we were learning about in science
    3. Used American Sign Language with the keywords kids were reciting
    4. Using ASL motions along with memory work to communicate
    5. Keeps the family accountable
    6. Works with dyslexia
    7. Helps kids who learn differently
    8. Learn a lot of information in a short period of time.
    9. Helps kids who are goal-oriented
    10. Helps kids with upper-level subjects

Five Examples of using Memory Work:

    1. When working on memorizing something, we are practicing the words and starting to open our minds to what we are saying. We are developing “memory muscles” that continue to get stronger and are more able to take on more memory work challenges. More practice equals better memory.
    2. Memorization is key to learning a new language.
    3. Repetition is power. Repetition creates miracles. Highly successful people have really understood their area of expertise and can dynamically pass on the wealth of information they have acquired through their diligent study of their subject.
    4. Memorization is a good practice for perseverance.
    5. Even elite athletes who train every day see their movements are building their “muscle memory” to perform at the highest levels. It becomes a reflex that yields fine precision. This is a different aspect of memory, but it shows us how the practice of repetition refines us.

Laura appreciates what Susan Wise Bauer has to say about memory work. “The first years of schooling are called the “grammar stage”
because these are the years in which the building blocks for all other learning are laid, just as grammar is the foundation for language. In the elementary school years – grades 1 through 4 –the mind is ready to absorb information.” “Since children at this age actually find memorization fun, during this period education involves not self-expression and self-discovery, but rather the learning of facts: rules of phonics and spelling, rules of grammar poems, the vocabulary of foreign languages, the stories of history and literature, descriptions of
plants and animals and the human body, the facts of mathematics- the list goes on. The information makes up the “grammar” for the second stage of education.”

How do you teach Creation Science when you have no background in science? Try teaching with Creation Science Study Guides! Primary sources are always the best, but how about first-hand research? In this episode, we will delve into not only why teaching creation science is important but some amazing resources to complete your homeschool library.

Many years ago, early in my homeschool journey I attended a homeschool conference and walked away with hundreds of dollars worth of books on the topic of creation science and no idea how to teach the topic. I had attended an amazing set of talks but creation scientists who were all degreed in science for the universities in different areas. For example, Dr. Jay Wile has a Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry from the University of Rochester.

While I was impressed with the science credentials and knowledge of many of the people that I listened to, they taught me many great facts, but not how to implement teaching creation science into my homeschool. So, I began as many other homeschool moms before me and I wrote a curriculum series.

The Creation Science Study Guides still is as relevant today as when I co-authored the series in 1994 (when our first book was published). God introduced me to a creation scientist. A geologist by degree and homeschool mom to three boys by occupation. We met by a God-incident and became friends and soon co-authors. You see, Jill Whitlock had been an atheist and had worked as an oil and well geologist for a big company. When she lost her job she found a new one at a church. When they handed her a Bible she told me that she opened it an immediately had a difference of opinion with the first sentence, “In the beginning, God created…” Jill went on to study creation for ten years before I met her.

She was able to take all those books I wrote and we used them as resources for our study guides. We wanted something parents could use with their kids with no prior science knowledge. My background was education so I could teach. I just didn’t know enough science to teach from a creationist perspective. Teaching creation science became my passion and taking difficult topics and bringing them down to basics while the kids had fun was a challenge.

First, why teach creation science? Why not? Secular books, and all public and some Christian schools teach evolution as fact. Why can’t we teach both? I’m not opposed to teaching science from an evolutionist perspective, besides a creation one. If your children are little, begin with the Bible as a foundation. Start at the beginning in Genesis and study Biblical history. This foundation helps when teaching creation science.

Give big bang theory example here.

    DNA example here.

Another example in our book deals with plate tectonics. This is the divide of the continents. Have you ever looked at a map of the world and see that it could fit together into one landmass if you cut out all the continents and puzzle-pieced them together? Evolutionists claim that it took millions of years for the division of the continents from one landmass to land masses that are continents that are divided by oceans. Creationists believe the continents split, quickly as stated in Genesis 10:25 where God divided not only the lands but the languages.

For example, our study guide talks about radiohalos. A quick search online recently showed that this finding set the scientists crazy trying to refute the claims. I’ve included two links you will find helpful. The bottom line is the radiohalos are an indicator of a young earth. The question becomes, does this matter?

    Evidence For:

It matters. Why teach from only one perspective?

Here are my reasons for teaching creation science:

    1. Your kids won’t get it anywhere else.
    2. Evolution has many false findings taught as fact. Ernst Haeckel among others.
    3. I believe God created the world as he stated in Genesis.
    4. If we teach creation as a myth or allegory then that means the entire Bible is one as well.
    5. Darwin said that the fossil record would validate this theory and it never has.

If you want a series of study guides that will entertain your kids from preschool to high school I highly recommend you check out the Media Angels Creation Study Guides. They are available for immediate download on the website – all of my books for one low price and they include the study guides which are ready to go experiment sheets, games and puzzles as well as the books.

One of the great things about teaching creation science is that it is so hands-on. Your kids will love doing the activities and learning as they have fun. I do believe there is an added benefit. Creation science points to a creator God. It talks about the wonders of God’s creation and gives us awe about the world God created!

College Test Prep Starts With Tests

The two big tests are the SAT and the ACT. The SAT is created by the College Board and the ACT is created by the American College Tests. Not only can doing well open the doors to college but it can provide good scholarship money. Colleges get their rankings based on test scores. So the higher the score, the more money available for scholarships.

85% of the colleges will actually admit giving scholarship money simply based on a score. The tests are written pretty much by the same people, but they’re two different companies. So there’s definitely a crossover of information that you can use for both. Once you learn how to beat one test and pretty much use that information to beat the other.

Another test that has been around for three years is the CLT, this stands for Classic Learning Test. And this particular test is actually based on western traditions and more along what homeschool families teach. This test is offered five times a year. and is basically in about 150 colleges right now.

    Staring College Test Prep Early

One of the things Jean hears at conferences as well through emails or even phone calls is a wish to start earlier. There’s a huge misconception that learning about how to take the SAT or ACT is something you do a week before the test. The problem with that is that there is no instant success. Test prep is no different. The sooner you start, the more time you have to improve, especially when we’re talking hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars scholarship money that’s out there just simply based on your test score.

Some kids begin as early as six grade, but not every sixth grader is ready. Seventh, eighth-graders and older is the perfect time to begin. When students get older they get busier especially toward the junior year. It’s very difficult to squeeze one more thing in. And usually test prep is not one of them because a lot of kids don’t want to give up something else or they can’t give up something else.

Middle school ages and grades is the time to solidify the information, you have time to internalize the strategies and shortcuts and hopefully, by the time that you are in high school, this is second nature.

    Natural Test Takers:

There are kids who are really good test takers naturally they are logically minded. So it’s kind of intuitive to them. And for those students learning a few more little things can really put them over the top.

    Rule Followers:

And then you have your other students who are more of what we call the rule followers. And those are the ones who need more time. They overthink everything. They read all the passages, all the questions, all the answers they go to what can happen, map and showing all their work. And for them they need more time to retrain their brains to think logically.

    Must-Know College Test Prep:

    1. These tests are logic tests and they’re not about IQ or how smart your child they are designed to purposely mislead the students. And the wrong answers can be very tricky and easy to pick. And so doesn’t matter where your child is on the learning spectrum. So you want a starting point.
    2. Baseline: Go to collegeboard.org and click on practice tests. Scroll to the bottom printout, test number one, for example, have your student take it. You can score it pretty quickly with the app, by snapping a picture of it. Then you will have a baseline. This score does not reflect their GPA or who they are, know that the baseline number is typically low.
    3. An insider tip: For example, when they’re doing the reading section, as much as 75% of that passage can be completely skipped and most students are going to try to analyze it and try to interpret it and they’re gonna try to answer the questions in the order that they’ve given you, but they’re testing thinking skills. Most students will waste time on question number one.
    4. You must learn the logic behind the questions and how to rearrange them in the correct order. Good math students will often get their worst score on the math section. And that’s not because they’re not good in math, but because again, what they’re doing is they are so used to working out the problems, the long way showing every step, showing all their work and then pretty much burning up the clock by doing that.
    5. Time: For the writing portion you are given four passages, 44 questions and 35 minutes to do it in. So logistically, there’s no way you can finish. It comes out to about 47 seconds, a question plus the passages.
    6. Tests have patterns within them. You cannot study for them, you have to study the tests themselves. For example in the writing portion, there’s a pattern that occurs as much as 75% of the time where you can answer the questions in 10 seconds.
    7. It is a beatable test, you don’t have to be a genius, and average students, even students with severe disabilities, even autism, and dyslexia, dysgraphia have become national mayor’s scholars.
    8. General learning strategies can help in other tests as well just learning the general testing and strategies have helped students on other tests such as the GED, the LCFF, the MCAT, the CPA tests, real estate tests, the military, and even the FBI tests. Most standardized tests are all written very similar. In the fact that you have one objective, indisputable answer and several distractors and most tests are written where you have to understand that so that you can, like you said, eliminate by process of elimination, you can eliminate the trick answers. And so this is why I’m such a big believer and making test prep a part of your daily school.
    9. The only fair way that anyone can test everybody equally is with standardized testing because we’re all from different backgrounds, different states, different schools is your critical thinking skills.
    10. The writing portion should be taken. “Optional” should not be optional because that is the first cut at the university level if you have not taken the written portion. They look at this as one student who does the optional work and those who didn’t. In many cases, the application does not move to the next stage because they didn’t even take the time to do extra work. So it’s really important. And there are other reasons to do the optional essay.

Just thinking about teaching with laughter makes me smile. I stumbled across this recently when I tried this technique first-hand. It worked! I can’t wait to share the details with you.

Thanks to our sponsor – Overcomer the Movie! In theatres at the end of August 2019 but guess what? The video is available afterward as well. This is one of the must-see movies for families (who love sports) of the year.

We all love to laugh. Often we read things on social media that are so funny we share them with our friends. Laughter makes us happy, it reduces stress. Laughter crosses culture, all over the world people laugh. Babies even laugh before they can speak. It is a form of communication.

    Teaching with Laughter has benefits!

    Research shows that that laughter:

    • Increases blood flow
    • Decreases stress
    • Triggers endorphins
    • Promotes well-being

The use of humor in an education setting is beneficial and I found this out the other day. When I was working on a reading program, I found my student (aka grandson) was becoming stressed. We were pushing it to right under his frustration level in order to create new neuro-pathways. This is one of the ways to teach a child who may struggle in a specific area. We don’t want the child frustrated, so it is under this frustration level where a child will say it is too hard.

I decided to use humor to defuse the tension so I began with all the jokes I had on hand – believe me, I’m not the best teller of jokes.

    1. What time is it when the elephant sits on a fence? (Time for a new fence)
    2. Why did the man throw the clock out the window? (To see time fly) etc.

It was wonderful – he began telling me jokes and we laughed, went back to our work and they were able to get a bunch done!

Telling jokes or teaching using humorous antidotes does encourage a healthy learning environment. While humor in itself does not cause learning it does affect the brain. It causes the brain condition to fire up and get ready for learning.

You may not be a comedian – very rarely do our own kids think we are funny; we can use humor as a tool.

    1. To get your kids attention.
    2. To defuse bad behavior.
    3. Help to get their neurons to fire up.
    4. Help pave the way to learn difficult subjects.
    5. Makes learning fun.
    6. Encourage your kids to participate.
    7. Helps the kids remember the information
    8. Soothes anxiety if the child has difficulty with a subject
    9. Causes relaxation.

It is a good tool for laying groundwork for learning. But, if you are not funny – then what?

You can use the child’s names in a book you are reading. Switch out the character’s names with your children and watch them sit up and listen.

Set up a Pinterest Board –

    1. Use funny memes. (Look up.)
    2. Use video just search for funny video for kids

You are not going to use humor all the time otherwise it does not become effective.
