Do you have goals, and where do you see your child in five, ten, or even fifteen years down the road | #podcast #homeschoolpodcast #SuccessfulParentingThatWorks #Episode522 #SuccessfulParentingSuccessful Parenting That Works ~ Episode 522

As parents, we want to be appreciated, but what does successful parenting look like? Are your goals met? Do you have goals, and where do you see your child in five, ten, or even fifteen years down the road? In this episode, we will look at some misconceptions about parenting and ways you can have a peaceful home.

Visit MediaAngels.com for books, classes, and downloadable printables.

Have you ever felt that success or failure is typically in the eyes of the beholder? I certainly have, and the articles I’ve read often discuss the fact that we set our own standards. In other words, what you consider a success or a failure might not fit my definition. I’ve come to realize that without a plan, I will struggle and fail. Unfortunately, parenting does not come with a manual, although some would argue that the Bible is all the manual you need! But even Christians like me face challenges when it comes to parenting.

    Parenting Little Ones:

Your kids aren’t little forever, and when I was expecting my first I read every parenting book I could get my hand on. There is a ton of advice now on blogs, video and everyone is an expert, just ask them. While I’m not saying I’m an expert, I’ve spent most of my adult life as a wife and mother. More than 43 years at this point with five children and nine grandchildren. When my grandkids come to Sunday family meals, they know what is expected. Sometimes it takes a gentle reminder, or I appeal to my daughter, their mother for help. When kids know what is expected it is so helpful!

One misconception about parenting is that there is one right way, and your neighbor is doing a better job than you or anyone else. Another misconception is that parenting is one size fits all—or, in some cases, most! We equate our success in parenting with how well our children listen or like the family rules (if you have them).

Parenting is not the same as friendship. Sure, you should have a relationship with your child, but parents who attempt to be “friends” with their children end up struggling with discipline.

I have felt successful with some of my children and a failure with others. I can list all the excuses, but that doesn’t help with a solution. This is regarding children who are now grown up. Parenting looks different when the children are younger.

No matter what your level of success or failure, one thing that is certain is there is always room for improvement and apologies when needed. It is okay to admit you were wrong; it isn’t easy, but it is necessary and can go a long way toward repairing damage in relationships.

Successful Parenting That Works for Elementary Age:

    1. You have family rules. These are fluid and may change, but your children know what is expected.
    2. You say what you mean and you do what you say. (Threatening and repeating parents rarely are happy with the outcome.)
    3. Your child knows there will be follow-through.
    4. You are encouraging and look for opportunities to praise and encourage.
    5. Punishments work.

Successful Parenting That Works Looks Like This: (Older Children/Teens and Young Adults)

    1. You and your child have mutual self-respect.
    2. You listen (and they listen). Discussion is allowed. There is open communication, you may not like what they have to say, but you will hear them out.
    3. Advice is considered and taken.
    4. Rules are mutually set, with the parents having more weight on the final outcome. (Especially for children who live at home or dependent children.)

There is, God willing always tomorrow for a “do-over” if you’ve had a very bad day. Children will test the limits of our patience and our rules and structure. However, if they know we will follow through the odds are in our favor that the outcome will be acceptable for all. I remember telling my teens that our home was a monarchy and I was the Queen. Yes, it may not have been my proudest moment, but I was struggling with the boundaries that they were pushing in full force! We did regroup, discuss and come to a compromise that was accepted by all.

My husband was never the disciplinarian, and I had to be okay with that, but I decided early in our marriage that I’d rather have well-behaved children than stress over who was the stricter parent. In the end, we did work together, and as long as we had discussions in private—not in front of the kids—when we disagreed with parenting, all was good.

I want to end with words for Christian parents. Many Bible verses are helpful, but first, it depends on your mindset.

Proverbs is a wonderful book filled with useful information, I especially like Proverbs 3:1-4 (Read on air).

As a Christian parent, I believe that God put our family together, giving me the spouse I needed and the children I needed, not necessarily for perfect happiness, although happiness can be found in family life, for the salvation of all. We, as a family, work to encourage each other toward the goal of eternal life, and it isn’t an accident. We are family. (Yes, salvation is through faith and Christ. However, those who are saved can go off the righteous path without nurturing whether adults or children.)

Keeping the commandments is more than just at home – 1 Kings 2:3 and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn.

There are many other verses that deal with discipline, but I think that going to prayer and praying for our children is one of the best things you can do! As a mom of adult children, I will tell you I pray for them every day, and I prayed for them when they were younger. Friends, don’t be disheartened! If you have pressing concerns or advice you’d like to share, leave it on the post, or join our Facebook Family page and share there as well!

    Show Notes: Graduation Party

There are many locations that are great for a graduation party. During the season of the pandemic we had to be creative with ideas, and we were! We hosted our graduate at home and she even “walked” in her cap and gown ordered for under $20 from Amazon. We made the best of the situation!

    1. Location: churches, park, church fellowship hall, party at home
    2. Invitations – VistaPrint, at home computer
    3. Food
    4. Decorations
    5. Personal Touch

We discussed deciding on the type of graduation you want, planning the type of graduation early, and saving up money. Pray about the type of graduation that is right for you. Include your teens as well.

    More great ideas

    • Food -finger foods – fun: candy bars – ice cream with toppings
    • Open house – visiting times staggers friends
    • Photo booth with props for teens
    • Personal touch – poster boards, items important to the teen

Astronomical Events ~ Total Solar Eclipse Apr 04, 2024

Astronomical Events and Homeschooling | Are you ready for an astronomical event, the total solar eclipse? Well, today (April 8, 2024) is the day if you are listening to this podcast in real time! It is a long-awaited event that has received a lot of press coverage. However, it is one among the many that happen in our skies | #podcast #homeschoolpodcast #Episode521 #AstronomicalEventsandHomeschooling #AstronomicalEventsAstronomical Events and Homeschooling ~ Episode 521

Are you ready for an astronomical event, the total solar eclipse? Well, today (April 8, 2024) is the day if you are listening to this podcast in real time! It is a long-awaited event that has received a lot of press coverage. However, it is one among the many that happen in our skies.

Visit Mediaangels.com for immediate downloads such as Character Planners, Checklist Planners, and, coming soon, the entire set of Organize-IT planners.

The go-to website for all things astronomical is the NASA website. The direct link to the total eclipse is here.

Here is a great poster for your homeschool about the different types of solar eclipses Earth and Space Science Exploring Solar Eclipses Educational Infographic -MediaAngels.com

In the many years of homeschooling, I found that real learning took place when the children were able to experience the events of the day. Whether the events took place before we went on a field trip or after we watched a documentary. Often, we would research first and then follow-up visits whenever possible. When we did a rock study, we coupled it with a family trip to the mountains. This took us to states that actually had good samples of rocks to collect. Florida, where we live, is great for visits to the beach, sedimentary studies, flora and fauna, birds (especially waterfowl), and swamp-type activities. We were card-carrying members of all of the local nature centers and visited the planetarium on a regular basis.

I took astronomy in college, and let me tell you, it was not an easy science unless you excelled in math. I thought I was decent, but back in the day our telescopes, while powerful, still had to be adjusted to keep the target in our viewer. I loved it but learned early on that I’d keep it a hobby. The kids had telescopes, and these were not the best; we found that a high-powered pair of binoculars worked best, and a very dark night sky.

As a homeschool parent, I always capitalized on “real-time” events with my family. Even if you are not in the direct path of the eclipse, there are so many activities you can do as a family. Here are some ideas that you can follow to get the most out of real-life learning.

    1. Call off your regular school activities and study the path of the total eclipse.
    2. If you are on the path, be sure to get safe eyewear so you can view the eclipse safely. Here is a list of safety guidelines: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/safety/
    3. Have the children keep a journal of the event. Write down things that you learned about the eclipse and where it traveled, and have the children draw a map of its path. You can find this on the Nasa.gov website here – https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/
    4. Research other astronomical events coming this year and the next.
    5. Create a 3-D model for the younger children with the planets and the solar system.

    Other Astronomical Events:

    1. The planets. Often the planets can be seen in the night sky. Set up a time monthly when you check your area to see what planets you can see with a high-powered set of binoculars.
    2. Upcoming launches and landings, the happening of our space program here.
    3. Be aware of pseudo-science. For example, when talking about comets, the “Oort Cloud” is often cited as an example, as the claims are that there are billions of comets within its realm. The problem is there is no evidence that the Oort cloud even exists! Here is a great article here
    4. This is an older post about the eclipse – but there are some great activities for kids here.

Other Phenomenon – Astronomical Event of Warning?

Whenever there are astronomical events there are many who share things that might cause you to pause, such as religious chastisement and the like. Here is the thing: as a Christian, I believe that we need to look at every day as if it is our last and live life with God’s grace to the fullest. We need to err on the side of caution always, and be prepared, but do not allow gloom your peace to be disrupted by dire warnings. Recently I was presented with a video from a fairly trusted source on YouTube, and as I listened to this video it did seem that chastisement was imminent.

One of the reported “signs” of chastisement was that the path of the eclipse would go through 7 towns named Nineveh – if you know your Bible, Jonah the prophet was sent to Nineveh to warn them about impending doom if they did not repent. Everyone from the King on down did repent and turn back to God and their town was spared. However, the total eclipse will not go through 7 towns of Nineveh – but it will go through two, in Indiana and Ohio, if this blog/map is correct. See the link here.

Here is another interactive map with the Nineveh listed.

The last eclipse and this one intersect to form a cross at some point near Missouri. We must always remember that God is merciful, slow to anger, and compassionate, (Jonah 4:2)

The main thing to remember is that we can use everything as a teaching moment for our children. I pray that you found this podcast informative! And please share it with a friend.

Noah's Ark ~ Fact or Fiction | Did the worldwide flood really happen, or is it a myth? | #podcast #homeschoolpodcast #NoahsArk #TheFlood #TheArkandTheDarknessIs the flood, the Biblical version of Noah’s Flood, fact or fiction? In this episode, Felice Gerwitz interviews Dr. Daniel Biddle, president of Genesis Apologetics, to dig deeper.

Noah’s Ark & The Flood ~ Fact or Fiction

Noah’s Flood is preserved in ancient writings from every major culture around the world. Recent discoveries confirm what the Bible has said all along. Sevenfold Films and Genesis Apologetics present: The Ark and the Darkness.

Noah’s Ark & The Flood ~ Fact or Fiction

Dan and I discuss the evidence pointing to the conclusion that The Flood, as depicted in Genesis, did happen. The fossil record is evidence enough, but compiled with what the Bible says, as well as recent finds (unfossilized dinosaur blood), have caused an uproar in the secular scientific community. Listen to the audio for the full interview.

Noah’s Ark & the Flood Movie Depiction

Editor’s Note: I viewed the movie in theatres, and it is excellent. It is partially a documentary with some notable scientists and theologians. Compelling evidence is presented for a global flood, including many examples and fossilized records that further support creationist theory. The computer-generated reenactment is wonderful, and it is captivating for the middle school and up crowd. Dan Biddle was part of a panel of scientists and theologians at the end, and it was a great wrap-up to a good movie. A must-see.

Easter Celebration On The CheapEaster Celebrations On The Cheap

Easter celebration on the cheap includes fun and easy ideas. Celebrating Easter on the cheap doesn’t mean skimping on our favorite time of the year, it means celebrating in style and saving money along the way.

Remember, it’s about Jesus not the candy! Remind your children about the true meaning of Easter which is the Ressurection of our Lord. This is what you are celebrating. Let’s review some fun, cheap activities you can plan this Easter!

    • Potluck:

      • Ask family to bring a side
      • Delegate ice or drinks
      • Baked ham goes far and is a favorite
      • Little kids love chicken fingers
      • Cold salads – make ahead.
    • Reuse and Repurpose – Eggs:

      • Those plastic eggs should be saved each year
      • Fill with coins instead of candy – redeemable in the store (see below)
      • Use as decorations
      • Have little ones hunt for specific colors, or count how many they collect
    • Easter Store – order online or dollar store (Explain easter egg hunt Gerwitz style):

      • Shop sales, for everything.
      • Candy bars, candy kisses, everything is a mini.
      • I look for candles at odd times, discounts on decorations after the holiday, etc.
      • Store under the bed in plastic bins or farm out to a family member with more storage space
      • Less is more. I like minimalistic decorations. The more understated the better. Fresh flowers with outside greenery is wonderful.
    • Make Your Own:

      • Create your own dips or salads
      • Rolls are very cheap, easy and fun to make. Kids love to help.
      • We love chocolate. Many of our treats are chocolate based such as trays of brownies and dipped strawberries (hint: I use 2 cups of chocolate chips with a spoonful of unflavored coconut oil, helps it to harden – this is so much cheaper than buying them!), make a big cookie – use disposable (can be reused) round pizza trays. Be sure to leave room for expanding dough.
      • Easy appetizers: fresh fruit with marshmallow dip, salsa, and chips, melted cheese poured over chips, cream cheese and packaged dressing for an easy dip (add mayo to liquify if needed.)
    • Decorations – Easter egg tree from kids “blessing others”

By performing these activities with your family, not only do you save some money, you teach your children the real meaning of Easter! Family Values

Have you wondered about American family values? Are you struggling to provide quality content for your family? Well, today’s guest is such a blessing and has useful information to share! Kirk is married to his wife, Chelsea, have been married for 31 years, have six children, and host an all-expenses-paid summer camp for terminally ill children and their families called Camp Firefly.

Kirk Cameron has made a big impact on our society through films like Fireproof, The Homeschool Awakening, and Lifemark. Kirk linked arms with BRAVE Books in December of 2022 and has been working for the Kingdom, sharing his faith and emphasizing our freedoms across the country. In 2023, he launched the See You at the Library campaign, and he announced his most recent endeavor as a spokesperson for SkyTree Book Fairs, a non-profit whose mission is to get more age-appropriate, wholesome books into schools. His passion for bringing traditional biblical and American values back to public spaces is contagious and reviving hope for families everywhere.

Family values begin in the home.

This is something we know, yet what we may not realize is that even our public libraries and trusted children’s booksellers are doing everything they can to sabotage parental efforts. In this episode, Kirk shares how he came up against opposition in the See You at the Library campaign. Fifty libraries across the USA kept him from coming, basically boycotting his message. His message contained the fruit of the spirit values! Who could be against that? As parents, we need to know what is happening in our public libraries.

I shared a situation that happened to me at an airport that questioned my rights not only to vote but to voice her opinion. The blog post I discussed on air can be found on my website here. Blog Post – “This Is What Democracy Looks Like.”

We should stand up for what we believe with love, kindness, and compassion, and not with anger. When I asked Kirk how we can be told what to believe and not to believe – he said we should not allow people to dictate our beliefs. So, powerful (more on air).

Kirk shares how important this time is for Christian families to stand up for what is important, as well as ways we can equip our families with wholesome books. He also shares how we can not allow the enemy victory. Most encouraging is his stance and call to all of us. He states we have been created for a time like this and that we should embrace our call and use our gifts as we are able.

We briefly discuss how Kirk was not always a Christian but how Jesus found him in Hollywood. He explains how a pastor once told him that he didn’t find Jesus because Jesus wasn’t lost. He continues to fight for access to good content through SkyTree Book Fairs, coming to a town near you. Saving Money For Big Purchases Saving Money On Field Trips Saving Money On Electricity Being Frugal is important but Charla McKinley shares more about why teens sometimes pick up habits that are less than desirable for fiscal responsibility. She shares a real life story to illustrate this point regarding her son and the purchase of white tennis shoes. He basically blew his entire shoe budget for the year on shoes his mother advised against purchasing. Charla discusses how this one decision had ramification on his future spending and what she did to lead him toward awareness. This experience shaped his financial outlook on finances especially on budgeting for future expenses. Charla explained how we, as parents like to help our children understand that money isn’t just for spending … and she gives us practical tips for helping the kids understand this concept. It isn’t that hard, but it does take work. The McKinleys give their children an allowance, but she shares how we can not only be consistent but how weaving allowances into being a responsible spender is important. She also answers teh question about parents who disagree, believing families should all pitch in and work without pay. (This is important when it comes to chores, but an allowance is different. Charla explains this on air.) She also shares a list of five money lessons our teens need to know before leaving the house for good, and how can parents start teaching these lessons to their children simply and effectively.

The Big 5 – Money Lessons Your Teen Needs

    1. How to plan your money so it will get what you need when you need it.
