224: Apple Car: Project Titan Disassembled Jan 29, 2019
    Show notes

There were rumors for years that Apple was working on a phone but Purple, the iPhone project, never really leaked. There were rumors for years that Apple was working on a watch but Gizmo, the Apple Watch project, never really leaked.

At least nothing even close to Titan, which many people have assumed is the Apple Car project but is kind of something much bigger, exactly what Apple and Tim Cook have called it: an autonomous technologies project.

That we keep getting reports on the inner workings of a special projects group within Apple is surprising. That Apple commented on it is startling. We'll get to that in a hot minute but, first, what is Project Titan really? And why does it seem to be changing year after year?

    223: iPad mini 5 (2019): The Breakdown Jan 25, 2019
    Show notes

iPad mini has the shortest turn around of any iOS device ever, at least up until that time. Apple went from not making one to scheduling one to ship on a dime.

Luckily, the software teams discovered that the existing 9.7-inch iPad interface, shrunk down to 7.9-inches, with the density increasing from the iPad's 132 ppi to the iPhone's 163 ppi — remember, these were the days before Retina — kept it completely usable.

That wasn't the result of any careful, multi-year planning to re-use existing screen fabs or save on UI work, it was simply the karma of solid, practical past choices creating opportunities for smart, efficient future choices.

Combined with the next-generation, size-bezel-slimmed design language Jony Ive and the ID team had been working on, and the new Lightning port the platform technologies team had been developing, for the full-sized iPad, and the teams once again managed to do the impossible — turn around and ship the iPad mini in record time.

And, in 2012, it enjoyed a good amount of success, especially back in the days before big and bigger screen iPhones, Plus and now Max models that might as well be tiny tablets in their own rights. It pushed down iPad ASP — the average selling prices financial analysts often cite when commenting on market health in lieu of any deep product knowledge. But some customers really loved it.

In 2013, it went retina with iPad mini 2, in 2014, it got Touch ID with iPad mini 3, and in 2015 it finally got the laminated display and A8 processor… of the previous year's iPad Air 2. But without the benefit of any keynote time, other than a pricing slide.

Because iPad Pro had come, with a 12.9-inch display, Apple Pencil, and an average selling price that would make Wall Street beam a little again. At least for a while.

And, since then, nothing. Nothing and more nothing. Until now.

222: Should Apple BAN Google... and Give Up $BILLIONS? Jan 24, 2019
    Show notes

I've gone over Facebook's year of scandals, Google and Amazon's struggles with ethics and abuses, and Apple's calls for privacy regulations.

That last one has caused some pushback. What about Apple and Google Search? What about Apple and China? What about Apple and cross platform services? What about Apple and App Store app abuses? What about… you get the idea.

And that's fine. That's great. That's exactly what I want. I said from the beginning that all of this, all the videos I've done on privacy and security, were meant to be parts of the conversation.

    So, let's converse.

    219: Tim Cook: That's my information that you're selling, and I didn't consent. Jan 17, 2019
    Show notes

"In 2019, it's time to stand up for the right to privacy—yours, mine, all of ours. Consumers shouldn't have to tolerate another year of companies irresponsibly amassing huge user profiles, data breaches that seem out of control and the vanishing ability to control our own digital lives.

"This problem is solvable—it isn't too big, too challenging or too late. Innovation, breakthrough ideas and great features can go hand in hand with user privacy—and they must. Realizing technology's potential depends on it."

That's how Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, begins his essay on privacy, just right now published in Time Magazine.

"A California judge has ruled that American cops can't force people to unlock a mobile phone with their face or finger. The ruling goes further to protect people's private lives from government searches than any before and is being hailed as a potentially landmark decision."

That's how Thomas Brewster, begins his coverage in an article just days ago in Forbes.

The need for both regulations and rights. It's exactly the conversation I wanted to help kickstart in the RIGHT TO REMAIN PRIVATE video I posted last weekend. In the age of ubiquitous data harvesting, it's one of the most important conversations all of us, here on this channel and out in the world, have to have.

I didn't intend to follow that video up so closely with another. But I don't every time get what I want.

And, in this case, it's for a couple of damn good reasons.

218: iOS 13 Major Changes Needed for the Future Jan 17, 2019
    Show notes

iOS is no longer the simple, mainstream operating system Steve Jobs first showed off in January of 2007 with the original iPhone.

But, it's also not yet the sophisticated, pro-centric operating system geeks have been lusting for since Steve Jobs first showed it off again in January of 2010 on the original iPad.

Some want to keep iOS simple and accessible, like an appliance. Others want to turn it into the Mac.

Both are wrong. And myopic. There's a third path, one that lets iOS continue with its mainstream mission but also take it to the next level in a way that brings everyone forward.

217: Right To Remain Private Jan 14, 2019
    Show notes

I'm going to use this video to propose something so controversial I'm not even sure I fully agree with it, at least not yet. This is complex, nuanced, life, death, and the future of our society stuff, and the absolute last thing I'm going to do is take any of it lightly.

Instead, I'm going to take several things that happened this week, break them down, and then suggest how we as a people can move forward.

    216: Apple 2019 Product Preview Jan 08, 2019
    Show notes

If you like Apple products or you're simply a proper tech head who delights in everything cool and novel, then the minute that big ball drops on New Year, you start thinking about just which products exactly Apple is getting ready to drop in the New Year. Some things was can all but take for granted — new operating systems at WWDC in June, new iPhones in September. Other things, like new Macs and iPads, and events in March and October… well… those are always just a little less certain.

2018 was a huge year for Apple where almost everything got update, almost. But it was also a huge challenge, with some updates delayed and some products just MIA.

So, what does Apple have coming in 2019? The best indicator of future behavior is past behavior, so let's look at the patterns and see what they show us.

215: Best of HomeKit at CES 2019 Jan 07, 2019
    Show notes

Here's a question: Will Samsung phones get AirPlay 2 now as well?

About a month ago I got to go to New York and preview a bunch of HomeKit accessories scheduled to be announced at CES 2019.

Since CES 2019 is just kicking off, and not all of the embargoes have dropped, I'll add updates to a sticky comment as they come in.
