    244: iPad 7 (2019): The Breakdown Mar 04, 2019
    Show notes

First, it was a new product category that fit somewhere between iPhone and MacBook. That despite, of course, a decade of Tablet PC that had come before it. Then, it was the intersection of technology and the liberal arts. Most recently, it was the clearest expression of Apple's vision for the future of computing… Even as Apple continued introducing new Macs. but what's a computer, right?

It's the iPad, and rumor has it we're about to get a new, slightly bigger, and overall improved entry-level model again this spring.

But what does that mean, exactly?

243: NOT FaceTime, New Siri Shortcuts, EFF #FixItAlready Mar 03, 2019
    Show notes

I'm doing something fresh on Fridays. Picking up three stories that are important but either wouldn't fill an entire video on their own, or I simply dropped the ball on and didn't manage to fit in during the week.

It's code-named The Wrap, because Space Bear was all used up, and if you have stories you want to see covered next week or any week thereafter, just drop them in the comments or hit me up on Twitter.

On deck for today we've got EFF calling for iCloud Backup Encryption, some really cool new Siri Shortcuts support, and not FaceTime but Duo for the web.

242: iPhone Apps on Mac?! WWDC 2019 and the Future! Mar 01, 2019
    Show notes

Marzipan is the code name for Apple's multi-year project to bring UIKit apps to the macOS. In other words, apps made in the newfangled iPad way, rather than the traditional AppKit way for the Mac.

We saw the awkward early stages last year at WWDC 2018 with the release of Apple's first iPad app ports, News, Home, Voice Recorder, and Stocks for macOS. And while they're not good, or consistent, or inspiring, or good, at least not yet. They're most definitely there.

Apple said stage two begins this year, at WWDC 2019, when developers get their chance to creating and porting UKit apps to the Mac. Sure, that includes huge players like Netflix and Twitter, and more feature-complete versions of Apple's own apps like Photos and Messages, it could also include iOS apps that previously made no economic sense to redo for the Mac, like Drafts and Overcast.

Most recently, Mark Gurman rumored for Bloomberg that future stages also include a way to bring iPhone apps — the ones without existing iPad interfaces — over as well, and, eventually, a unified App Store and universal binaries across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple's existing adjunct platforms, like Watch, TV, and maybe even CarPlay.

But it's a long road from here to there, and I'm not a developer, so I reached out to one of the smartest, most industries, most keyed-in developers I know to help me suss all this out.

Samsung has shown off the Galaxy Fold. Hawaii the Mate X. Oppo... another Mate X? That Xiami tease. LG… whatever the hell this is. And, never mind the Royole FlexPai. Just, flashy thing me already.

It's foldapalooza 2019, but is any of it any good — and which of it the best?

240: These Apps Are Stealing Your Most Private Data — And it Needs to Stop Feb 25, 2019
    Show notes

It's disappointing if no longer surprising that Facebook and Google siphoning off your most private, personal data isn't expressly illegal everywhere.

Data theft is still theft and this type of stuff happens so frequently, even with policies, even with fines, that the only way to stop it seems to be by making sure it's criminal. That if you fail to disclose what data you're taking and who you're sharing it with, you'll face charges. You'll go to jail.

That the penalty will be so severe that if a founder, CEO, or developer even dreams of violating it, they'll wake up screaming to delete the code.

And until that happens, the platform owners, Apple, and Microsoft, and yes, even and especially Google, needs to hold every app and every developer accountable.

Require them to disclose, as part of the store page, what data is collected and who it is shared with. In place that's as easy to see as the price, the compatibility, and the parental guidance.

Then do deeper inspection to detect what, if any, information is being sent to the developer and any quote-unquote analytics they may be using, and if it doesn't match the disclosure, reject their ass… I mean apps, over and over again, or if willfully and intentionally deceptive, remove their apps and delete their accounts.

And if any developer is the least bit concerned that would have a chilling effect on downloads or a deleterious affect on their business, then they shouldn't be doing it.

    238: 3 Things iPhone 11 Should STEAL from Galaxy S10 Feb 22, 2019
    Show notes

Whenever a new phone comes out, I do two things: Chew gum and figure out which of its features I'd love Apple to implement in the iPhone. No, not really. What I do is figure out which features I'd love to see Apple implement, and then figure out how Apple could take them even further.

So, with the announcement of Samsung's Galaxy S10, there's a whole new list to get to. And I'm fresh out of gum. Fresh out.

    236: Apple 2019 Product Breakdown [Updated!] Feb 20, 2019
    Show notes

Kuo Ming-Chi, financial analyst and supply chain exfiltrator extraordinaire — that is to say, the one person who's somehow been most able to pry information out of all the companies assembling all the components and products for Apple — got a ton of attention again this week when he sent his clients a note covering what he expects to see in 2019. And, of course, that quickly echoed across the internet in ways both predictable and, in many cases, confounding.

So, what did he cover and what does it mean?

    Spoiler alert. We're going in.

235: URGENT: How To Set Up Multiple 2FA Accounts On One iPhone Feb 19, 2019
    Show notes

Starting February 27, 2019, Apple is going to require developers to enable two-factor authentication — 2FA — on existing developer accounts.

That's left a lot of developers scrambling to get themselves set up in time. Because… Connect wants unique IDs for every service. That means, even if you don't have or work for a company, it's quite possible you may have an iTunes and App Store account, iCloud account, developer account, Apple Books account, Apple Podcast account. And if you do work or contract for a company or several, maybe more than one of some of those. Hell, I do.

Lest you think this video is all only for developers, if you have a significant other, child, parent, business partner, or anyone that would benefit from multiple people having 2FA codes, this can be for you as well.

So, how are you going to get the 2FA codes for all the other accounts?
