Bomb Squad Goals Nov 16, 2015

Show notes

Kelly & Tom are joined by returning guest and loyal Cousin Lauren Parker to join in eviscerating the cinematic snooze button that is Suffragette. Apart from the fact that there are zero characters of color and the protagonist is a “composite character,” there’s plenty to chuckle about, including the story of how Brendan Gleeson’s beard got cast, Cher’s long-lost bagel boy, the unexpected awesomeness of Helena Bonham Character and her husband, a new name for Carey Mulligan, the many failures of mannequin technology, and whether British people are allowed to be named Sonny. Kelly is getting extremely proficient at a variety of UK dialects, Tom reminds us that Dan Savage says it’s fine to cheat to save your marriage, and Lauren tells everyone not to watch “The French Lieutenant’s Woman.”

I Thought This Was Meat Nov 02, 2015

Show notes

Kelly & Tom do their best to transform the mumblecore snoozefest that is 2008’s Brideshead Revisited into a Warner Brothers cartoon. They declare that Ben Whishaw is #NotMySebastian, name-check Bertolt Brecht, make fun of Haley Atwell’s atrocious wardrobe, advocate for more pop culture dong, and declare unusual characters to be their favorites. Kelly has gay puns for days, Tom insists that nobody hates Champagne, and everyone agrees that Italy is England’s Burning Man.

This Is Where The Luncheon Began Oct 19, 2015

Show notes

Kelly & Tom thoroughly enjoyed Milos Forman’s 1981 epic Ragtime, so much so that Kelly barely gets any songs from the musical in. They are overwhelmed by many cute babies and cameos from everyone who’s ever been in anything, ever, but still manage to be quite moved by the plot, shocked by McG in her earliest form, amused at EL Doctorow’s inability to name characters, and admire various facial hairs. Kelly recommends the books of Ann Rinaldi, Tom derails things at the very end, and everyone wonders about the Emma Goldman scene that might have been.
