    Up Close with Chris Tinney

The United States operates a poverty management system—a fragmented network of aid and services where no one is responsible for actually lifting people out of poverty. But what if we could replace this outdated model with a poverty alleviation system that helps people achieve lasting economic mobility?

Creating a Poverty-Alleviation System requires a holistic approach that brings together economic development, business leaders, and service providers to align resources and create real pathways out of poverty. To break the cycle of poverty once and for all, we need systems-level change, not just isolated programs.

Every week, Poverty Ends Here brings together thought leaders, policymakers, and advocates to explore innovative strategies that go beyond managing poverty—to eradicating it. As automation and artificial intelligence continue to disrupt labor markets, Universal Basic Income (UBI) may become inevitable. With robots and AI rapidly becoming more efficient than humans in many industries, we must rethink economic policies to ensure everyone has access to financial stability and opportunity.

Your host, Chris Tinney, is a seasoned broadcaster and social impact leader with over two decades of experience tackling the systemic barriers that keep people in poverty. With a unique, informative, and conversational approach, Chris delves into proven programs, cutting-edge research, and success stories from communities leading the way in economic transformation.

Food Not Bombs has proven to be an effective project for social change. For the past 35 years, volunteers have served the homeless vegan and vegetarian meals around the world. Often described as a movement it all began when the first volunteers were arrested for feeding the homeless. In this episode we get Up Cose with Keith McHenry, Co-Founder of Food Not Bombs and Author of "Hungry for Peace". Keith will share how it all started and the challenges volunteers face in many states where it's now illegal to feed the homeless. Keith passionately makes the case that we should take action to end hunger, poverty, and war providing shocking evidence that our future is in peril if we sit by and do nothing. He has written two books including "Hungry for Peace - How you can help end poverty and war with Food Not Bombs." Keith lives with his partner and fellow Food Not Bombs activist, Abbi Samuels, in Santa Cruz, California and at their farm in Taos, New Mexico and tending to their gardens, sharing meals with the hungry, maintaining the movement's websites and helping coordinate logistics for Food Not Bombs. Beginning the End of Poverty with Scott Miller Sep 20, 2017
    Show notes

I first discovered Circles USA while traveling the country serving the homeless with Spread Peace USA. I had become discouraged. The winter was ending, and several of our Homeless Friend's had died on the streets that winter. More than 36,000 homeless people had died on the streets in America that year. I was looking for answers. One of my homeless friends handed me a book and asked me to be his Ally. I didn't know what he meant, but the book he gave me changed my perspective on everything. The book was from Move the Mountain, now called Circles USA. As I read that book, I learned some of the causes of poverty, but for the first time, I was offered a proven way to lift people out of poverty and eradicate it all together. This week we get Up Close with Scott Miller, the Founder, and CEO of Circles USA and Author of "Until It's Gone: Ending Poverty in Our Nation, in Our Lifetime" This e will leave you inspired, hopeful and with the tools to DO SOMETHING! Show notes

Many people really don’t understand what it means to be vegan. It’s not just a diet or a list of rules. It’s a joyous way to live and will give you a feeling of connectedness that you might otherwise never experience. I’ve been vegan for 15 years. That’s me in the picture on the left. Becoming Vegan happened naturally for me as I came to truly understand we are all connected, we are all one and our choices really do matter. This show will connect you with all the best things about being vegan. Our guest is Jon Camp. At the time of broadcast, he was the Executive Vice President of Vegan Outreach. He has since moved The HUman League. Jon travels across the US leafleting on behalf of Vegan Outreach’s Adopt a College campaign. Vegan Outreach has provided more than 14 million pamphlets that have been handed out all over the world. Jon (right) has personally handed out over one million booklets at 500 schools and has mobilized hundreds of others to join the outreach program. That’s Jon leafleting in the picture. SHOW SUMMARY The show opened with Jon sharing about VeganOutreach.org and the work they do. The organization and its volunteers have handed out over 14 million copies of VO’s powerful pamphlet that describes the realities of commercial farming and it effects on animals. Jon shared some the circumstances surrounding hens commercially raised for eggs and other animals being abused. We also discussed how many other countries don’t allow animal products from the USA to be imported for health and ethical reasons. We discussed the impact the personal choices we make whether that be to help educate the public or by showing people the benefits of cutting back or eliminating animal products from their diet. Show notes

This week we get Up Close with the CEO of the Surfrider Foundation, Dr. Chad Nelson. Thirty years ago, a group of surfers from Malibu, California, were concerned about the health risks associated with environmental threats posed by escalating coastal development at their favorite surf spot and they took action. Not even they could have envisioned the history they were making when they succeeded in protecting their beloved surf spot. Since 1984, the Surfrider Foundation has evolved into one of the largest non-profit grassroots organizations dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. Today, Surfrider is even stronger with 84 chapters, plus 30 high school and college clubs, and more than 250,000 supporters, volunteers and activists around the country. In this fascinating interview Chad shares the challenges we face in our oceans and what we can do about it.
