Jettie is the fourth of twelve children. She believes in God but her family doesn’t go to church. She goes occasionally with a neighbor. She has to quit school at 14 to help at home. At 18 she’s allowed to stay behind when the family moves. She works, meets Brady and he promises to get a job. He joins the army and they marry. But his bad discharge from the navy ends his enlistment. He becomes a drunk, staying out all night. Jettie prays for salvation and leaves him. After he is saved, they move to Chicago and discover “Unshackled!” They go to PGM for years and foster a child from the Women and Children’s Division.

Starting in high school, Matt drinks too much. He goes to law school after college, where he meets Kay. Before they marry in his senior year, he enlists in the Marines. He goes to Vietnam and survives. Afterward, he practices as a lawyer. Seven years into his marriage he has an affair with his secretary who becomes pregnant after seven years. She keeps the baby that Matt supports. He tells Kay and she goes to a neighbor for comfort who leads her to Christ. Then Matt and their children get saved. They begin adopting bi-racial children. They even adopt Matt’s illegitimate daughter. He shares his testimony at churches.

Sonny goes to the altar at ten, but is led astray by country music. He succeeds, elopes with Mary and joins the Navy in World War II. He and his group hit it right in New York and Chicago, where they play for nationwide radio. But he drinks too much. A salesman comes to his house and offers to pray for Sonny who continues to run from God. One day he is unable to sing and begins to shake. He promises God he’ll do anything. Unable to even drink, he confides in a Bible-reading girl at the Chicago bus depot. Then he gets on the wrong bus and has to walk three miles in sleet. He cries out to God, is saved and becomes an evangelist. He counsels Laura Swaringim.

Harold’s aunt and grandmother look after him and his siblings when his dad is gone and his mother works during World War II. They never go to church, but his grandmother has a picture about Jesus knocking on the door of the heart. His father buys a farm when he returns from the war and Harold, as the oldest, does much of the work. Being a daydreamer in school and having failed several grades, Harold quits school at age sixteen without being able to read. He wants to know God, though, and goes to a church service where he is saved. But he is unable to read the Gospel of John given him.

Faye teaches Harold until she goes off to college. He joins the army, gives his testimony in the Stockade, and a colonel hears and takes him under his wing. He gets his high school education, marries Faye and when he’s discharged, the colonel helps him start a Christian Servicemen’s Center. He helps start a Youth Challenge ministry to help troubled teenagers and leads his pastor to Christ. He takes Russian Bibles to East Germany, then to Russia where he starts orphanages and witnesses to a Russian judge who professes faith in Christ. Still serving in various ministries.

Bill grows up an only child. His mother reads him Bible stories and the family goes to church. At church camp when he’s 13, Bill asks Jesus to save him, but he later denies being a Christian. His parents encourage him to join a social club where he learns to smoke, drink and play poker. After his dad is saved, Bill rebels. His smoking ruins his health and he is hospitalized with rheumatic fever. Dying, he asks God to let him lead one person to Christ. He lives and goes to camp where he leads a young man to faith. He goes to Bible school where he meets and marries Ruby. They serve in Kentucky. The first part ends as a Supreme Court decision forces them to leave their ministry.

2984 Bill Shade Classic – Part 2: (Amputee, Inner-City Missions) After hearing a policeman describe youth crime, Bill launches an inner-city ministry in York. God provides people and resources to help him take hundreds of poor gang members to camp where they fight. Asked to preach, Bill begins sobbing and they listen and respond. God helps him buy buildings as centers for youth. Riding his motorcycle, Bill is hit by a car and his leg amputated. A nurse saves his life. He goes through a time of darkness as his ministry shrinks but at the end he has been chosen director of a world-wide ministry.

A willful child, Tim prays for salvation at age 10 because he fears hell. But as a teenager he rebels against authority. He smokes, breaks rules as well as track records in the long jump and high hurdle. He moves out, gets a job and goes to college. A bad accident makes him think but not enough to change. He joins the Marine Crops, shapes up and gets meritorious promotions. Then he gets his orders for Vietnam, goes home and goes to the altar. The first part ends as he heads for Vietnam, telling God he can’t live for Christ.

Billy’s parents work, leaving their children in turmoil and without God. He cries out to God at 13 but doesn’t get an answer, so he turns to drugs and alcohol. He gives his soul to Satan at 17, then tries suicide. He graduates but a friend’s accidental death makes him wonder what will happen when he dies. He goes to California with his brother, works, tries a relationship, then worldly things, then New Age to fill the emptiness. A coworker tells him about Jesus. When Billy begins seeing a dark apparition, he cries out to God to save him. He goes to Bible college and becomes a pastor. Still in ministry.

Terrson’s dad has a mistress, causing turmoil in the home. Shy and fearful, Terrson turns to alcohol as a teenager. She tries drugs but prefers alcohol. An alcoholic in her twenties, she struggles against drinking. She marries another alcoholic and they have two children. She manages to quit while she’s pregnant. She reads Leviticus and tries to follow God’s law so she’ll go to heaven but can’t. Her sister-in-law’s dad tells her how to get saved and Terrson prays and is born again that night. Her husband rejects Jesus and divorces her. Terrson learns to forgive him and the other woman. She remarries and she and her husband are serving the Lord.
