Dallas is an Army brat whose mother prays for her family. Dallas worships his volatile, hard-drinking father who has fought in three wars and was shot four times. His dad retires and goes to college with Dallas who is using and selling drugs. They drink together in bars; but during a trip with friends, his drunken dad shoots Dallas at close range as they argue. Miraculously, the bullet doesn’t kill Dallas. But his love turns to hatred and both men continue to feud. His older brother invites him to Louisiana where his brother witnesses to Dallas who prays to receive Christ. The first part ends as he refuses to forgive his father.

After receiving Christ, Dallas goes home. He and his dad fight and his dad again tries to kill him. Dallas goes back to his brother in New Orleans to be discipled. Returning home, he visits his dad, now diseased with diabetes. His dad rejects the gospel but accepts help through a partial foot amputation, hyperbaric oxygen treatment and dialysis. Dallas offers his kidney and the transplant is successful. When his dad keeps drinking, Dallas leaves for seminary, where he marries after graduation. Threatened with a leg amputation, his dad receives Christ; and Dallas and he have a loving relationship until his dad’s death. Dallas is now an evangelist.

Working as a barmaid, Pat meets Richard and they marry. Both drink, and Pat becomes a mean drunk because of the rage within her. Defying him one night, she is hit by a van and nearly killed. Being hospitalized leads her to think about eternity, but she goes back to drinking. Blackouts and depression lead her to seek psychiatric help and shock therapy. Her daughter has become a Christian and talks to her about God. Pat argues, so her daughter suggests she talk with her pastor. Pat does and he makes her think about eternity. After her grandson is born, Pat talks to God. She faces possible cancer that leads to her salvation cry. Still faithful.

Jerry goes to Bible college in Chicago where he meets Jan. They date for six months until he leaves for Swaziland. After five months he asks her by telegram to marry him, and she accepts and comes to Africa. They marry and he becomes headmaster at the Christian school that his mission founded. The king’s son attends and Jerry longs to meet the king. Eventually, the king’s son arranges an audience, giving Jerry sermon material. After 20 years in Africa they return home so their daughters can attend college in the U.S. Now pastor of a church in Ohio.

Dave grows up an only child with asthma. His parents move to the Southwest for Dave’s health. They send him to a private boys’ school where he learns to cuss and drink. He races a hotrod and breaks many driving laws. Then he buys a motorcycle and risks his life. He flunks out of college because of parties, crashes a friend’s car, then decides to go back to college to study agriculture. He goes to church, hoping God will help him graduate. He and a drunken farmer crash a pickup with trailer but aren’t hurt badly. He marries a Mormon who leaves him after nine months, and Dave threatens suicide. Then he talks with a pastor who leads him to Christ. Dave goes to Bible college where he meets Bev and they marry.

Bill’s dad teaches him to fight as a child. His dad is a drunk; his mother is unstable and abusive. She neglects him and his siblings and sends them to their father who has divorced her and remarried. The family goes by bus from New York to North Carolina where Bill prospers as a teenager, becomes a leader and gets a job. Then his dad abruptly goes back to New York, taking his sons along. Bill quits school, joins the army and there he hears a street preacher and yields his life to Christ. The first part ends as he witnesses to his brother, Ron.

Adopted as an infant, Mel joins the church to please his Mother. In high school and college he cares more about girls than studies. He joins the Air Force after Pearl Harbor and trains as a bombardier; but the war ends before he goes overseas. Back in college he marries Marj, parties with friends but doesn’t commit adultery. He re-enlists in the Air Force to fight in Korea, where he again womanizes and has several close calls. Back home he and Marj become active in church, but Mel realizes that the church teaches falsehoods about the Bible, and they seek a new church, where the pastor leads him to Christ. He & Marj help missionaries; their daughter is a missionary in Mexico.

Pat’s dad abandons the family and his mother is a drunk. He and his brother live with uncles or in foster homes. His brother teaches him to drink and use drugs; then his brother goes to prison for robbery and Pat drops out of school at 13. He meets Terry, an undercover cop who talks to him about God and the Bible. But Terry smokes pot and leaves town after a drug bust. Pat goes back to drugs. When Terry returns, he’s addicted to cocaine and ends up killing himself in front of Pat, who becomes suicidal. He marries Deanna but can’t quit drugs, so she leaves him, and their pastor sends Pat to a rescue mission. He surrenders to Christ, quits drugs and witnesses to his dying father. Pat is preparing for full time ministry

After his parents divorce, Chad drifts into trouble, shoplifting. A buddy tells him about hell. But he quits going to church at fifteen and starts using drugs and alcohol. He denies God’s existence even when he has a near-fatal accident on a four-wheeler. He’s arrested several times for underage drinking. Then he and his friends steal things and are turned in to the police. They flee to Ohio where Chad has a surreal drug experience and believes he has sold his soul to the devil. They go to Phoenix where he listens to radio preachers and decides to turn himself in by going home. He’s sentenced to jail and drug treatment where he meets a Christian but still feels in bondage. Another believer hands him a tract and then comes to disciple Chad who finally prays for God’s forgiveness. Married with three sons.

Gerald goes forward at twelve but leaves God behind at sixteen when he falls in love with Geraldine. Doesn’t go to church for the next 20 years. Goes to Europe to fight in World War II as an electrician, repairing fighters. Meets up with his brother there. Comes home and marries Geraldine but goes from job to job. Rejoins the army to get an education, serves in Korea. Working for IBM, he steals a few parts, has heart problems and is hospitalized. There he discovers part of a Bible verse and rededicates his life to the Lord. Has had a prison ministry for many years.
