Peter is detained a year, then allowed to return to college. The Communists trick people into airing grievances and Peter does. Again sent to labor camp for nearly four years, he is brainwashed and tries to deny God. They release him and he finishes college but is sent to labor camp for another year for listening to English radio to learn English. Still persecuted, he finally meets Chang and they marry; but the persecution continues. As a scholar he goes to the U.S. where other Chinese believers help him see God’s mercy and grace. He recommits his life to Christ, brings his family to the U.S. and goes to seminary. Now a missionary to the Chinese worldwide.

After his arrest, Tim becomes an F.B.I. informant, going undercover. He serves time in jail, then goes to drug treatment. While on probation he goes to church on Mother’s Day where he meets Hylea. She befriends him, writing to him in jail. After the indictments are served, he proposes to Hylea and they marry before he is sentenced to prison for 30 months. Kept in isolation, he weeps and reads the Bible, then after a fit of rage, he experiences God’s presence. He’s moved to a prison in Texas where he meets a believer who mentors him. After release he reunites with friend, Steve, in ministry before becoming an evangelist and then returning to a secular job and serving his church as a devoted layman.

Bill witnesses to his family, but only his brother, Ron, responds. Bill gets an early discharge, goes to Bible college and persuades Ron to go to the Christian high school attached to his college. Coming home during summer, he meets Shirley. As a missionary in Honduras, he gets amoebic dysentery and nearly dies. He goes into depression that school year. The next summer he reads a book that helps, and gives the book to other students, incurring the displeasure of school authorities. But he graduates, marries Shirley and pastors a church in Norfolk. Shirley fights breast cancer at the same time that Bill’s stepmother dies of cancer. After Roxie dies, Bill’s dad professes faith after hearing Ron preach. Both brothers now presidents of Christian colleges.

Susan goes forward at five and is baptized but doesn’t remember and grows up doubting her salvation although her father is a pastor. She quietly rebels, lying to her parents and sneaking out to movies. She goes to Bible college but her true nature lurks near the surface. She cheats once in college. She marries Larry who becomes a pastor. Home-schooling their four children, her angry outbursts increase and she fears death. She confides in a prayer partner who gives her a book, and as Susan studies the Bible, she realizes she is a sinner and repents.

After Tom joins the Navy and his girlfriend drops him, he is depressed. A buddy tries to talk to him about Jesus, but he rejects the overtures. Then he foolishly goes AWOL for a day and is sentenced to work fifteen hours every day for three months, except for chapel. In chapel a man shares the gospel and Tom prays for salvation. He witnesses to his family and all but his father profess faith. He marries, has five children and still serves the Lord faithfully.

Alex grows up in a God-fearing family, but he rebels. He’s expelled from Christian school, and he and his friends drink, fight and use drugs. He wrecks a car and is suicidal. They plan to go to a school in Florida, but an acquaintance steals their money. He meets Donna and they live together before marriage. His wife is unable to have a baby, and Alex begins listening to radio preachers as a comfort. Driving home he gives his life to Christ and learns that his wife is pregnant. Now in ministry.

After his parents divorce, Ray’s father neglects his sons, and Ray becomes bitter. His grandfather is a good role model, and an older neighbor also witnesses about Christ through her kindness. Ray flounders in school but graduates. He joins the Navy and develops an addiction to alcohol. Some sailors invite him to Bible study, but only when his grandpa dies does Ray turn to the Lord. He marries, graduates from Bible college and goes into ministry; but struggles to forgive his father. He begins praying for his dad, who is the first in the family to profess faith. Now retired.

Fred is one of nine children whose parents work hard but live in poverty in the squatter’s area of Manila. Fred’s mom begins gambling and loses her small salary, which infuriates her husband. Fred is drawn into gambling, too. The family is Catholic but his mother gets saved at a friend’s church and pressures the family to get saved. Fred thinks money is the answer to life’s problems and begins commerce college. The first part ends with his salvation.

Carlene grows up in a happy family until she is molested by her father, bringing fear and shame. She prays for God to intervene, and her mother discovers them. Her father stops molesting her, but is physically abusive. She goes to college and marries Sean, but pushes him away. She finally confesses the abuse but tries to forgive. Learning that her sisters and others have also been molested, she begins to confront her father about the past. Through prayer, counseling and Bible study, she is able to help others who’ve suffered incest.
