Hans and his family immigrate to the U.S. in 1952 when he’s 13. He works hard to lose his accent, falls in love with Mary and joins the Nevada Air National Guard after graduation. He learns to drink with friends and he and Mary wed. He quits the Guard and becomes a cabinet maker, then becomes a realtor. His excessive drinking, threats and a bad accident sends Mary into a breakdown and suicide attempt. Still he drinks. She and their two children are saved and she prays for Hans, who believes he is a Christian. He rebuffs all who witness to him. Finally, he goes to a Christian Businessmen meeting where he receives Christ. He goes to Bible college and into the pastorate.

Mike blames God for setbacks in his life. When his older brother beats a man to death, Mike covers for him and lies to the police. Thinking they’ve gotten away with it, Mike is engaged to Susan. Then he’s arrested. In county jail he’s outraged by a preacher, reads the Bible and is convicted of sin. He prays for salvation, expects to be exonerated but gets 21 years. Susan faithfully visits him. He grows in faith, gets a seminary degree and leaves prison after 16 years. He and Susan marry and he is now in prison ministry.

Johnny becomes addicted to narcotics when the “rest home” gives him Demerol to wean him off alcohol. He loses his right eye in a rest home brawl. Bitter and unable to work, he sells his possessions and then borrows. Reduced to the gutter, he decides to end his life, but a friend takes him to the V.A. Hospital where a chaplain prays for him. He goes to hear a former golf student at the chapel and gives his life to Christ. He witnesses to others including his father.

Charles’ father dies of alcoholism, so his mother raises her children alone. Born again when he’s in high school, she persuades him to attend a tent revival where he and his fiancée, Eleanor are saved. They marry and Charles fights in World War II in North Africa and Anzio. After the war he attends Bible school and becomes a counselor to pastors and churches having conflict. He starts a ministry of reconciliation where he still counsels by phone at age 90.

George is convicted at age seven, but no one tells him how to be saved. He grows up depending on his own efforts. In college he meets Laura and they fall in love. He is a senior in Naval ROTC when Pearl Harbor comes. He and Laura marry and he goes to war. When he returns, his father dies and he works the family farm. Then he accidentally runs over his 7-year-old son who dies, and George is devastated. He goes to his mother who talks about Job and George surrenders to Christ. God leads him into children’s ministry, and he founds the Mailbox Club for children, now all over the world.

While making methamphetamine, Rodney is set on fire. A neighbor takes him to the hospital where he recovers. The pastor of the Christian rehab visits, and Rodney goes there when he’s released. He finishes the course, lives with his dad and has many opportunities to witness for Christ. He finishes college, writes a book and becomes pastor of a church. He counsels Jennifer, a former drug addict, and they marry. Now in ministry.

Dick Lane’s cruelty is as famous as his skill at blowing safes. A newsman tries to help Dick by offering him a job, but Dick refuses. He disdains rehabilitation and thwarts the efforts of other inmates to go straight. After he breaks the wrist of a Christian who offers friendship, Dick’s hard shell cracks along with his career. He goes to the newsman who gives him a job but he can’t escape the memories. He walks by Pacific Garden Mission, gets saved and begins helping other guys on the street. One of them robs and shoots him.

Bessie’s beauty is her god. As a youth she sings at a mission but then falls away as a teenager. She meets and marries Nick, a Mafia type who is killed after their marriage. Her behavior degenerates and she sickens of her life and goes to Chicago where her family has moved. Her mother takes her to church and Bessie goes to the altar and prays to receive Christ. In street ministry she meets Bill, an accordionist, and they marry. He joins the Navy after Pearl Harbor and is killed in action.

Gary’s parents divorce when Gary is five. He goes to many different school but excels. Becomes a leader under the encouragement of his high school sweetheart. They go to college and she dumps him, so he joins the Army Special Forces and becomes a medic with the Green Berets. He gets drunk and piles up so many charges that he re-enlists for Vietnam. He loves the Montagnard people, the peace and purpose. The first part ends after a huge battle when he is injured three times but keeps helping others, which will earn him the Medal of Honor.

Gary spends ten months healing in a veteran’s hospital, tries drugs in his search for God. Then tries college but drops out after some students spit on him. He visits his cousin and her husband gives him a New Testament. He discovers Jesus and is saved. He is reconciled to his father, also saved, and then he goes to seminary. While there he’s called to Washington to receive the Medal of Honor. He meets and marries, Lolly, gets a Master’s in counseling and counsels middle school students.
