Craig Lutke is the leader and multi-instrumentalist of The Bilge Pumps, a pirate fest favorite. We'll get into the accidental way they started the group, where the name came from, and their process for including comedy in their arrangements.
This talk is all about pirates, music, and comedy. I may as well have been interviewing myself. ;)
Plus comedy from Travis Nelson and two(!) songs from The Bilge Pumps - "Pirating The Seas" and "The Dark Lady."

Javier Dominguez of Big Hat Pirates is on the show today. Sure, we're talking about pirate hats. Super bad ass custom pirate hats at that. But we're also talking about creativity (of a form that I'm terrible at) and when and how an artist has to let go of his work and let the consumer do with it what they will.
This is a really great talk with a talented and forward-thinking artisan.
Plus comedy from Danny Minch and a song called "Devil's Advocate" from Silvertung

This week's guest is author Darren Simon who's written a great book called "The Dangerous Legacy". If you like your pirate fiction laced with real historical characters and a dose of the supernatural, you'll dig this one.
This is a great talk about the craft of writing (especially how he and I approach it very differently). Plus you'll find out all the stuff in Darren's own past that made it into the book.

50 episodes! Whether you've been listening for a year now or you just discovered this show a week ago, thank you for tuning in and listening to me yap with fun pirate folks!
Wanna help the show get bigger? Tell your pirate-loving friends about it!
My guests on this episode are Chris Borden and Brittany Roberts, founders of combat entertainment troupe Under The Black Flag. We get into a great talk about what goes into fight choreography that you probably don't notice as a audience member.
I learned a bunch of cool stuff in this interview and you will too! Unless you already know about it, in which case you'll have a good time yelling at your playback device to disagree with us. Either way, you win!

TS Rhodes is a renaissance woman of the pirate set. She writes fiction and non-fiction, she tells stories at pirate fests, she reviews Black Sails for a prominent geek website, she knows a ton about pirate clothing, and does a whole presentation on Anne Bonny.
TS Rhodes lives and breathes pirate culture! You'll love this talk where we dig into all that stuff and more.

Alan Shepard is the main actor and show writer for Hawaii Pirate Ship Adventures. We'll dig into what it's like to write a show that has to be flexible enough for a new interactive crowd every day. Not to mention the differences between the kiddie cruises and the drunky byob nighttime adult cruises.
Alan's journey as a trained actor from east coast to far far west is a really great lesson in making decisions in your life to maximize happiness. Really great talk.

Laura Nelson's project is called The Whydah Pirates Speak. The Whydah has certainly been talked about from lots of different angles. So to add something new to the discussion, Laura went after the stories of the lesser players, the crew members, the characters you don't normally hear about.
Really good talk. We get into some of those stories and talk about the craft of writing the side stories around the big story.

It's a big fat juicy one today with two awesome interviews. We'll talk with Mike Tunez of Firelock Games about their new pirate tabletop game Blood and Plunder. And he gives us the lowdown of what it takes to create a game of this magnitude and how they made their Kickstarter for it so outrageously successful.
Then we'll talk with David and Serena Reiland about the 1st annual International Pirate Awards - how it began and how you get to vote for your favorite pirate stuff. And we'll dig into their Renaissance Festival Podcast a bit too.
Plus comedy from Marc Yaffee and music from Meeta Gajjar Parker.

It's Wonky Sound Day on UTC! I'm on the road and forgot to pack my podcasting mic and there's a weird bumpy knocky sound during the interview. The sound gods did not smile upon us this week. Better next time. I promise.
But that doesn't mean it's not a great episode! My guest is Shayna Vest from DressLikeAPirate.com and she is quite the character. We'll talk a bit about pirates invading the Ren Faire scene and what it took to get a business selling pirate clothes up and running in the wild west days of the internet.
Mucho fun-o... Plus epic comedy from Chad Opitz and a great tune called "Appalachian Bound" by Time Sawyer.
