24: Guardians of the Galaxy Aug 12, 2014

Show notes

Under the Comic Covers is pleased to present our first movie review, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, with our very special guest, Jason Cabassi of The Walking Dead'Cast.

If you have not seen the film, this episode of the show is not for you... we go into detail about the aspects of this movie that tickle our fancy and will spoil the bejeezus out of you,,, so be forewarned.

Although we don't have any mail to answer, we didn't really announce our plans to record this special episode, we do take a few moments to talk about our thoughts regarding the death of Robin Williams.

This may not be a normal episode of UtCC, but we hope you enjoy it... regardless, we will return later this week to discuss The Walking Dead and Sex Criminals. Until then, we'll be tucked under the comic covers.

23: Nailbiter #4; Locke & Key Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom Aug 08, 2014

Show notes

We at Under the Comic Covers don't plan on setting up thematic episodes (maybe a little, but not overtly), yet we do it again with another exceptionally creepy pairing of Nailbiter #4 and Locke & Key Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom.

Nailbiter continues it's fantastic first arc by answering a few questions and asking quite a few more, all while leaving us in the dark in terms of who the real new serial killer is...

Meanwhile, Locke & Key delivers yet another incredible chapter in what is one of our favorite completed series. Events come to a head as things boil down to genuine life or death situations, and what is left behind leaves much to anticipate as we come closer to the end.

As always we answer your email and questions... although sadly, this week we only had one fantabulous email... but make sure to get your emails in quickly next week... we will be covering The Walking Dead and Rat Queens... so we expect more from you... send in those emails!

22: Black Science #7; Nowhere Men Vol. 1 Aug 01, 2014

Show notes

Under the Comic Covers is proud to present another perfect pairing this week... We bring you the science suite of Rick Remender's Black Science and Eric Stephenson's troubled masterpiece, Nowhere Men.

Black Science kicks off it's second arc with something akin to a runaway freight train... pure adrenaline and pure action as we, the readers, find ourselves questioning everything we know about who are heroes and who are villains really are.

Nowhere Men, a book that emerged a rising star last year, only to see it's shine diminish due to delays and rumors, is but a six issue glimpse into genius... but we can't resist going over our favorite moments and our thoughts on this remarkable work of art.

In addition to this, we dip into the mail sack and answer your emails as well as take another call from our favorite comic book virgin, Rachael.

Read Nate Bellegarde's remarkable and touching open letter to readers regarding the delays of Nowhere Men and his role here.

Show notes

This week, Under the Comic Covers dives into two of our favorite titles: Saga #21, delivering more of it's fantastic interstellar soap opera, and Revival #22, giving the reader more questions while at the same time giving us satifying answers in what one of us considers to be one of the best issue of the series thus far.

As always we answer our listener emails and return to What's Rachael Reading? for another opportunity to catch up with our favorite comic virgin.

20: John Layman Interview Jul 21, 2014

Show notes

Under the Comic Covers returns with a second episode this week as we have a fantastic chat with John Layman, author and co-creator of Chew. He talks with us about the history of Chew, the low down on the upcoming movie with Steven Yuen and Felicia Day, and we dig into Poyo and his place in the Chew world. Plus, he gives us a taste of what's to come in this epicurean bird flu cannibal story we love so dearly.

Huge thanks to John for taking the time to do this interview, and we hope you all enjoy it as much as we did.

Under the Comic Covers returns this week with our first Ladies Kicking Ass episode.

We begin our girl powered episode with our favorite look at revisionist American frontier history, Manifest Destiny, and we are happy to welcome Rat Queens into the fold with the seventh issue in this fantastic and ridiculous fantasy book from Image Comics, written by Kurtis J. Wiebe and illustrated by Roc Upchurch.

18: The Walking Dead #129 Jul 11, 2014

Show notes

The Walking Dead returns with issue #129 and gives us various glimpses into the new post-post-apocalyptic world. We see a lonely non-repentant man, a cane weilding mad-man (or is he?) on the loose, and a pair of utter buffoons that may or may not usher in the collapse of a new society. Going over every detail will be Grace and Mr. Blahg as Under the Comic Covers dives deeps into the issue and discuss what they believe it all means.

And as always, we answer your emails and return with another installment of What's Rachael Reading.

16: Revival #21; Chew #42; Saga #20 Jun 27, 2014

Show notes

This week, Under the Comic Covers goes over three issues in one episode for the first time, and surprisingly, it's one of the shortest episodes to date.

First we go into the mysteries of Revival #21 and join Dana into her sojourn into the big city... we then travel with Tony Chu under the sea and meet up with Colby and some old friends in the midst of the strangest wedding reception of all time with Chew #42... and finally we wrap up with our perennial favorite, Saga. If there is a more beautiful way to break our hearts, I'd be hard pressed to find it.

In addition to all these great Image titles, we also respond to your emails and voicemails.

15: Sex Criminals #6; Walker Stalker Con Boston Jun 20, 2014

Show notes

Sex Criminals, Time Magazine's comic of the year and one of Under the Comic Covers' favorite titles, returns this month with an unexpectedly emotional story before turning things around and leaving us wanting and waiting for more. Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky don't disappoint as the second arc begins.

But before we talk about Sex Criminals, Mr. Blahg talks at length about his weekend co-moderating panels at Walker Stalker Con Boston. If you want to skip forward and get to the good stuff... you know, like Sex Criminals... that's ok. No hard feelings.
