Episode 62: Connected to Mack Ray Edwards Dec 03, 2021

Trigger warning. This episode discusses the murders and disappearances of children and also mentions child sexual abuse. Listener discretion is advised.

Many crime documentaries on TV portray serial killers as some sort of cold-blooded creature who only prey at night, like some kind of wild animal. I think the reason these programmes describe them this way is to try and put as much distance between them and us as possible, to lure us into a false sense of security that we won't ever come into contact with them and that we would know if we ever did see one in person, but this is far from the truth. To the outside world, these people seem to live very normal lives with normal jobs and normal families. They live on regular streets amongst unsuspecting neighbours, never in their wildest dreams imagining that they are in such close proximity to someone capable of the most horrendous crimes. The man we will be talking about today was one of these individuals. He did the unthinkable – sexually abusing and murdering children, yet he went undetected for over a decade and even over 40 years later, we still don’t know for sure how many victims he had. Today, we will be discussing the cases he is either suspected or thought to have committed as we uncover the cases that are possibly connected to Mack Ray Edwards.

Episode 16: The Unsolved Murder of Beth Doe May 22, 2020

I'm sure we’ve all been walking outside somewhere when we have come across something that seemed very out of place. Upon closer inspection, we usually find the object is either not what it first seemed to be. Sometimes, it is exactly what it appears to be but is innocent enough that we only wonder for a few seconds how it ended up there. When a teenage body came across three suitcases under a bridge along the Lehigh river, never in a million years did he think he would be the one to discover the body of a female, along with a fetes. Trigger warning, there will be talk of dismemberment and a deceased fetes as we uncover the unsolved murder of Beth Doe.

When you think of a scandal, you might recall headlines in papers, and accusations made against people with power and money. Back in the 1950's, the definition of a scandal was much different. Back then, especially if you were a woman, being a single parent, going through a divorce, having an affair or having a child outside of wedlock would often result in being disowned from your family and community. One woman, back in 1956, rose above it all and has described by one of her daughters as being "ahead of her time". That was until she disappeared after witnessing her boyfriend being shot. This case, despite all its twists and turns, has never been solved. Let's uncover the unsolved murder of Thomas Hotard and the disappearance of Audrey Moate.

Episode 9: Connected To Terry Rassmussen Apr 03, 2020

Most people listening to this podcast have probably heard of serial killers such as Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahlmer, Rose & Fred West, Ian Brady, Myra Hindley. The lives and crimes of these notorious killers have been documented thoroughly by police, the media and producers who have gone on to make documentaries and films about their horrific crimes. We know who most, if not all, of their victims are. Not all serial killers receive such infamy and glorification. We don’t know a lot about their background or their movements over the years and I have a feeling we have barely scratched the surface when it comes to identifying all the victims of the man we will be discussing today. He is known to have killed at least 2 of his romantic partners, suspected of murdering a third, killed 2 children, one whom was his own daughter, and abused and abandoned another young child, yet remarkably was only ever convicted of one of these crimes. In this episode, we will explore the cases he is known to be connected to and a few more that he is rumoured to have committed also. Let's cover the disappearances of Laureen Rahn, Denise Denault, Denise Beaudin and the murder of Eunsoon Jung, Marlyse Honeychurch, Marie Vaughn, Sara McWaters and the Middle child Jane Doe.

Depending on the stage of composition when found, their age, race, height, weight, hair and eye colour can vary in an exact determination to unknown. So-called Honour violence is defined by the Honour Based Violence Awareness Network as "a phenomenon where a person (most often a woman) is subjected to violence by her collective family or community in order to restore ‘honour’, presumed to have been lost by her behaviour, most often through expressions of sexual autonomy." This type of violence seems to be more common in the Middle East and in countries such as India and Pakistan however it is thought to be very under reported as not only are the victims usually related to their attacker but in a lot of these countries, women still don't have many of the rights that many of us take for granted every day. Some of the things that can be seen as "dishonourable" include their choose of job, style of dress, their sexuality, choice of partner and deviating from what their family, community and culture may expect of them. Honour based violence can come in many forms, including forced marriage and abortion, abduction, physical violence, such as beatings, coercing women into completing suicide and honour killings. I would like to add a trigger warning now as we are going to be discussing two victims, both of whom were victims of sexual abuse and of honour based violence. Let's uncover the murders of Amina and Sara Said.

Violence against native and indigenous women in the North American continent is an epidemic, one that deserves way more media that it gets. According the National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls, published in Canada in 2019, the murder rate of indigenous women is six times higher than the average rate amongst non-indigenous women. This is a very broad and complex issue that I want to dedicate an entire episode to so I won’t be discussing much about the report or other inequalities indiginous women face in this episode. In this episode, I want to discuss one native Canadian women whose life was cruelly taken away and 10 years later, despite police having an audio recording of the man most likely responsible for her murder, she has not yet received justice.
