Before we tackle the classic debate of Mics Vs Pickups, we have a big announcement for Ukulele Underground Streams. This is the last Ukulele Underground Podcast to be streamed on Thursday. The podcast will now alternate with the Aloha Friday Jams on Fridays. The guys explain why the change, and what that means for UU as a whole. The discussion of Mics vs Pickups is started when OG Member, Jim, ask what effects does Aldrine love or hate? Aldrine lists his go to effects and pedals, and what effects he uses for studio recording. We get into the main topic of the podcast by describing one of the major downsides of pickups: the dreaded thump. The team then explains the pros and cons of performing with a microphone. Aldrine recounts his early experiences with pickups, and how he does soundchecks now. It's ironic that as we give the tip to not overcomplicate your set ups, we experience Audio problems. Are there Right and Wrong ways to hold chords? It's a pretty common question that we've been asked before, but on this podcast we try to solidify where UU stands, and what we mean when we teach you the "Right" way to hold a chord. Before that, we give a quick student review, and some suggestions on Bass Tone. A member is taught an Alternative way to hold G, and asks if it's right or wrong? Aldrine tries to show the pros and cons for holding G either way. Kahai brings up that there is usually a reason why certain ways to hold chords become the standard for most players. We use the toolbelt analogy again, and remind everyone to use the right tool for the job. When another member asks if it's ok to play Em with your pinky, we go into a deeper discussion of enjoying your time learning the ukulele, and not trying to find the Secret to Instant Improvement. The topic of Instant Improvement leads the guys to examine Music Trends, Ukulele Clickbait, and Social Media as a whole. How do you overcome Stage Fright, and enter the Flow State? Aldrine starts off by suggesting a thought exercise to help focus during a performance. The team tries to help a member who's worried about how loud his strumming is. While Aldrine offers some practical advice with changing the curl of your finger, Aaron suggests not overthinking and focusing on having fun first. Next month's song lesson is brought up, and the guys start talking about the Uke Legend, Troy Fernandez. When the discussion shifts to some of the challenges of making UU videos, Kahai and Aaron share some insight on how the "Sausage is made". The talk of tuning starts from a member who saw James Hill's video on Alternate Tunings and asks the UU Team if they use Alternate Tunings and what are the benefits? Aldrine shares some of his favorite Alternate Tunings, Kahai gives a tip on how to come up with your own Open Tuning, and Aaron Explain's why Tunings might have become standardized. The team explains how to Tune by Ear which leads a discussion on Perfect Pitch and training your Relative Pitch. Aldrine opens up the discussion to Tuning on Stage and what the guys' opinions and best practices are. At the end of the podcast, The Last Songwriting Challenge winners are announced and a new Challenge is set.

Do Straps Make the Player, or does the Player Make the Straps? A student review leads the UU team to question how important is a strap, and how much support should you be getting from the strap? The guys also offer fundamental advice on how you should hold your ukulele to optimize support. This leads to a trip down memory lane when most ukuleles didn't have strap pegs, and playing an ukulele/pick up combo that was great for stage, but impossible to play without a strap. A UU member asks how many ukuleles Aldrine plays for a show, and another member asks why Aldrine wrote a song about Playing Cards. A special guest is announced for next week's podcast, and an extension is placed on the Songwriting Challenge.

TLL Podcast #106 - As Easy As Whistling May 22, 2020

It's just the Boys this week! No special guest, but the team does answer a question from last week, and reviews a back catalog of student reviews. One member asks if playing the ukulele will ever be as easy as whistling along to a song? Aldrine gives examples of how easy playing along can be, and Aaron points out how far you may already be if you can whistle to a song. The guys dive into Student Reviews. They give advice on following through with your strum, checking where you anchor, playing with rest strokes, playing posture, and the importance of Phrasing. A new Songwriting Challenge is set, and the guys throwback to a Titanic Ukulele Challenge. Towards the end of the podcast, the team pays their respects to Uncle Willie K by talking about fond memories with him.

He's a longtime friend, and one of our go to musicians, so we're excited to have him on. The guys start off with an introduction to Kaniho, and the backstory of Kaniho and Aldrine's friendship. They then give their advice to members who are suffering from Tennis Elbow. Aldrine asks Kaniho what the Hawaiian word for Elbow is which leads to a brief tangent on Hawaiian names. Aldrine quickly shows some patterns to help remember Major and Minor Scales, and gives his opinions on inlays. A deep discussion on soloing takes Aldrine and Kaniho back to their school days, and Kaniho relates the old adage, "Sometimes Less is More" to soloing and accompanying.
