In this truly EPIC episode the Bo-Hosts welcome recording artist, performer, producer, inventor, Emmy award-winning composer, and music education advocate Mark Wood, who PBS has dubbed "The Eddie Van Halen of the Violin World"!

Mark has appeared alongside some of the biggest names in music such as Billy Joel, Celine Dion, and Lenny Kravitz. As a member of Billy Joel's touring band, Wood shared the stage with Paul McCartney, Steven Tyler, and Roger Daltrey, and was also an original member of the multi-platinum selling, internationally acclaimed Trans Siberian Orchestra.

A successful solo artist in his own right, Wood writes and records original music for film and television, has released seven solo albums, tours with his band The Mark Wood Experience (MWE).

Mark also devotes his energies to empowering America’s music programs with his groundbreaking music education program Electrify Your Symphony (EYS), currently celebrating its 25th anniversary.

EYS helps raise the much-needed funds for school music departments across America, and recently he and his EYS musicians performed an incredible cover of Van Halen's "Dreams", from the epic 1986 album, 5150.

In this episode, the Bo-Hosts celebrate the 38th Anniversary of Van Halen's multi-platinum sophomore album, OU812. Released on May 24, 1988, OU812 (pronounced "Oh You Ate One Too") debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200 chart and was the Sammy Hagar-fronted band's second consecutive studio album to hit the top spot. The classic, but equally controversial album (due to it's lack of low-end Michael Anthony), spawned four Top-40 singles, including the smash hit "When It's Love".

But after 38 years, the Bo-hosts revisit the album's overlooked cookers, such as "AFU", "Source of Infection" and "Black and Blue", to discuss why they should be re-appraised, their VH rankings and their sonic-siblings!

So crack open a Sammy libation of choice, set the DeLorean's controls for the sun-drenched days of 1988 and join the Bo-Hosts for an episode so big it needed to be split in half!

Tim shares his "on-ramp" story—the moment "Why Can’t This Be Love?" changed everything—before diving into a world of physical media mysteries. From the "holy grail" 5150 8-track (yes, they existed in 1986!) to the hunt for the highly-elusive VOA, the trio explores the technical quirks and bizarre track-lists of a dying format.

Then the guys bridge the gap from 5150 to Sammy’s 1987 solo record, I Never Said Goodbye. They dissect Eddie Van Halen’s quiet fingerprints as a producer & bassist on the album and how this "contractual obligation" record became a Gold-selling bridge between 5150 and Ou812 eras and in some cases, "honorary" Van Halen tracks!

In this episode, the Bo-Hosts revisit the fun and the fashion of the 5150 era! 1986 was a pivotal year as Sammy started his mega-successful run fronting Van Halen. Pink parachute pants, yellow watches, white teeth and RED guitars permeated 5150's tour book. The band arguably sounded a bit different, but they also looked a bit different as the back half of the 80's unfolded. The fun matched the fury and the clothes were as loud as the guitars during the heights of Yuppie" culture, consumerism, and the aggressive musical pursuit of wealth!

Often referred to as the "wise swami" of hard rock, Martin pulls no punches. He labels fan-favourites like "Best of Both Worlds" as "undercooked jams," yet simultaneously argues the album is the "ultimate manifestation of the legendary Van Halen Brown Sound."

This time, we feature Sammy's first solo retail single, Flamingos Fly, from his first solo album, 1976's Nine on a Ten Scale.

Flamingos Fly was "gifted" to Sammy from Van Morrison, as Hagar and Morrison were both recording at the same studio (The Record Plant) at the same time. Morrison liked Hagar’s voice and essentially "gifted" him the song. While Van Morrison wrote the lyrics, Sammy’s choice to record them as his first solo statement feels prophetic in that the song is drenched in imagery of the Cabo Wabo lifestyle long before it existed, almost like this song was the subconscious - or conscious- blueprint for his "Billionaire Beach Bum" persona.

Come to think of it, did Sammy hit upon this lifestyle vibe before Buffet? Buffet only became recognized for his "island escapism" persona" following the release of the song "Margaritaville" in 1977, a full year after 1976's Nine on a Ten Scale! Also, if you listen to Van Morrison's version (released in 1977), it sounds wayyyy different!

Sammy wrote the song following a family retreat where he gained deep insights into how his children viewed their parents. It's a hidden gem that's hard to find as it was only released as a digital single on Feb. 25 2016 and has since vanished. Sammy describes the track as "very deep," dealing with his own upbringing, his children, and his grandchildren.

Unlike the band's more aggressive riff-heavy tracks, "Different Devil" is a textured, rootsy, and mid-tempo song that features acoustic guitar layering and gorgeous background harmonies. The song explores "grown-up" concerns within long-term relationships. Sammy’s lyrics address a partner wondering if there are better options elsewhere, using the central metaphor: "There's a wise old tale / 'Bout the same old Hell / Only the devil is changed". Hmmm....wonder if he's singing to a ex-lover or is he sending a sneaky message to a familiar-looking legendary guitar player?!??

As one of the two new entries, "Never Said Goodbye" finds the RedRocker waxing nostalgic about loved ones he never got to bid farewell to.

Inspired by a conversation with John Mellencamp about writing an "old-time standard," Sammy sent the finished track to Mellencamp, who praised it as "a classic."

Aside from being a huge Sammy and Van Halen fan, Ben is a killer Kramer & Gibson endorsed rock guitarist, as well as a recording and performing artist who gained notoriety with his dedicated following on Instagram and TikTok. Influenced by artists such as Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Poison, and Guns N' Roses, Ben formed The Ben Cote Band, and is now consistently touring the USA sharing bills with artists such as Bret Michaels, Slaughter, Lynch Mob, and Great White.

The Ben Cote Band has released five original albums, with the latest being 2024's "Celluloid Babylon," which included collaborations with Cherie Currie of The Runaways and Pete Evick of The Bret Michaels Band.

Drummer David “Bro” Lauser and guitarist Gary Pihl go way back—to the early ’80s, when they laid down the thunderous drums and scorching guitar riffs on Sammy Hagar’s iconic Geffen albums. Fast forward five decades, and their ALLIANCE is still going strong!

When Sammy joined Van Halen in ’85, Gary jumped over to the legendary BOSTON, where he’s held it down on guitar for 40 years. And when Sammy launched his post-VH solo career, guess who was his first Wabo? His "Bro," of course!

Out of that tight-knit musical (ahem) circle, "Bro" and Gary helped form ALLIANCE in the ’90s with singer/bassist Robert Berry and keyboardist Allan Fitzgerald. In this episode, they join the Bo-Hosts to chat about their killer new album on Frontiers Music, Before Our Eyes.

They also reminisce about recording VOA (and whether live footage exists!), the possible whereabouts of their "55" jumpsuits, dig into their recording process, speculate on a VOA band reunion in Cabo, and face off in a round of RedRocker Rapid Fire.

Where DOES the time time go?! Chickenfoot's incredible 2009 debut album turns sweet 16 this year!! This means in 2025 it too can now complain about driving 55 MPH and decide on Turnin' Left whenever it so chooses!!

In this celebration of the supergroup's EPIC debut album, the Bo-Hosts reminisce on that era in Sammy's life & career, and provide an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the making of the official animated music video for "Get It Up"! As some of you may already know, Bo-Host Darin conceived, produced and directed the video for the band alongside Sammy's lifelong friend and 2-time manager, the man everyone called "Carter". Darin shares making-of stories, a never before heard alternate-edit of "Get It Up", original production art, and reveals for the first time anywhere, concept artwork/tests that was supposed to be used for the sequel video, "Bigfoot", which unfortunately never came to pass due to the untimely passing of Carter. Plus, Darin also shares a some very interesting tidbits on other possible supergroups that Sammy could have participated in way back then!

"BALANCE" turns 30 today!! Wow, where did 3 decades go?!?
In this bittersweet episode the Bo-Hosts wax nostalgic on this most epic of albums and look back on what was a turbulent era for their favorite version of the band. The Bo-Hosts also discuss Balance's place in landscape of Rock N Roll circa 1995, the interesting origins of certain tracks, Eddie's personal challenges, his gear & evolving tone, and we also hear from friends & listeners on what the album means to them.
Sadly, Balance was Van Halen's final, full-length studio album with Sammy, and as we would soon learn, the cracks that are now easily visible were about to break wide open, setting the stage for, as friend of the show, Martin Popoff, calls "Van Halen's Dark Ages". As the saying goes, "Hindsight's always 5150!"

Thru this connection, Steve and Eddie started a friendship which started in 1977, and lasted 26 years.
