Nannie Doss – also known as the Giggling Granny – was just another hopeless romantic who dreamed of finding the perfect man who would sweep her off her feet. As she read her “True Romance” magazines, her thoughts would drift off and she would imagine her ideal life – and to her, that meant, no kids, lots of money, a handsome husband……and, she would viciously eliminate ANYONE who got in the way of that dream, even her own family members.

Staying Safe: Spencer Coursen & The Safety Trap, Live From CrimeCon 2021 Jun 18, 2021

Hey ya’ll….here I am again, just….totally gushing to you about the amazing time I had at CrimeCon2021 in Austin, TX! As I said in last week’s episode, I was able to do some amazing interviews and meetups while I was there. Last week, I shared the interview I did with Karlee Bodine, whose Mother, Karen Bodine, was brutally murdered in 2007 in what is a STILL UNSOLVED cold case….so be sure to listen to that episode. And now, in this episode I’m shifting gears a little bit and sharing my interview with Spencer Coursen, which I also did live at CrimeCon.

This interview deviates from my normal discussion of murder mysteries and cold cases, and we were able to share a bit more lighthearted conversation, which was really nice.

So, Spencer recently released his new book, called The Safety Trap. In this book, Spencer discusses the fact that, although the times we live in are truly safer than ever, that presumed safety, can also give us a FALSE sense of security. Topics of the book range from home security options, to keeping your kids safe, and he urges ALL of us not to depend on OTHERS for own safety, BUT, he shows the everyday person ways to shoulder that responsibility ourselves.

Spencer’s CrimeCon sessions were informative, and entertaining… he’s actually a pretty funny guy – and he kept the CrimeCon audinces totally engaged with his real-world, relevant advice and anecdotes. If you missed him at CrimeCon 2021 in Austin, you’ll DEFINITELY need to catch him at CrimeCon 2022, in Vegas.

In January of 2007, the body of – what police would call - a transient drug addict - had been discovered along a frequently traveled country highway, near Rochester Washington. Her body was, intentionally posed in a shocking and vulgar position… Police would later identify the woman as 37 year old Karen Bodine – but, they got the details WRONG, because Karen was actually, a loving mother & daughter - and part of a pretty amazing family… one that was determined to set the record straight and get justice. This is True Crime IRL and I’m Kelli Berens-Brink, and THIS is the REAL – unsolved - story of Karen Bodine.

THE MURDER MINUTE: Who Killed Karen Bodine? Jun 03, 2021

I’m Kelli Berens-Brink, and this is the True Crime IRL Murder Minute.

Who killed Karen?

The body of Karen Bodine – a 37-year-old mother of three - was found the morning of Jan. 22, 2007. Her nude body was dumped on a busy road near a gravel pit, and detectives say her body had been posed by her killer.

The weekend before her murder, she had been hanging out with an unsavory group of friends… could one of them have killed her?

Police are confident that more than one person is responsible for Karen Bodine’s murder, and that it is likely someone she knew.

So WHO killed Karen?

Well - An unknown male’s DNA was recovered from a ligature found around Karen’s neck, and there were two tire tracks at the location where Bodine's body was recovered. As we’ve seen in other cases in recent years, where there’s DNA…there will VERY likely be an arrest one day.

Until that day comes -- anyone with information about Karen Bodine's death, as well as the days leading up to it, is asked to call the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office 360-786-5500.

THE MURDER MINUTE: The Death House of Greenwich Village Jun 01, 2021

THIS is the story of The Death House of Greenwich Village.

There’s a beautiful Brownstone brick home that blends in with all the others on West 10th Street in Greenwich Village… but the history that’s taken place inside its walls is anything BUT beautiful.

22 people have died in the home, referred to as the House of Death – and a few of its tenants are said to still reside there in the afterlife.

Several well-known names have dwelled at this residence – including, Mark Twain, who is said to still haunt the building.

Some pretty horrific things have happened here, including – Famous former attorney Joel Steinberg beat his partner Hedda Nussbaum’s six-year-old daughter to death in the house. Steinberg was convicted of first-degree manslaughter but was out on parole in 2004.

Besides this tragic death, the house was the site of numerous suicides and other tragic and mysterious deaths.

THE MURDER MINUTE - THE MACDONALD TRIAD May 27, 2021

Ever wonder what makes an otherwise normal person into a serial killer? Well, that’s a question that has plagued psychologists for years. BUT, we do know a few contributing factors can be a history of abuse, previous trauma, past head injuries, AND… there’s also a set of 3 factors that can be predictive of whether or not someone becomes a serial killer – and it’s called… The Macdonald triad. The Macdonald triad was first proposed by psychiatrist J. M. Macdonald, who believed that these three things – first, cruelty to animals, second, an obsession with fire-setting, and lastly, persistent bedwetting, are linked to violent or homicidal behaviors later in life. The Macdonald triad has been present in many criminals and murders, including the well-known serial killer Ed Kemper. So next time little Johnny reaches for the matches after kicking the dog and wetting the bed… watch out…..you just might have a future serial killer on your hands.
