The Final Frontier Jul 22, 2020

Show notes

It's cited by many fans as one of their least favorite Star Trek movies, but is it really that bad?

When Star Trek V: The Final Frontier hit theaters in 1989, it was on the heels of the wildly successful fourth movie that had a wide appeal. Expectations and anticipation were high, but the movie left fans feeling somewhat disappointed. We'll take a look at some of the challenges this movie had to overcome.

We'll also look closely at the things that work extremely well in this movie and why the movie might be a lot better than people think. Our feelings just might have changed about this movie in the 31 years since it was released, and we can't wait to tell you why.

Joining us to look at this movie is New York Times bestselling author and friend of the show, Dayton Ward! It's a conversation we hope you'll enjoy and, we promise, no fan dancing.

To Be Continued... Jul 08, 2020

Show notes

Some episodes of Star Trek are just so epic, they can't be contained to a mere hour of television.

The precedent started in 1966 with Star Trek's, "The Menagerie," and it's a format that occurred all the way up through Star Trek: Enterprise: the two-part episode!

Sometimes they're a cliffhanger to give us something to anticipate over the summer hiatus and, other times, they're stories that happen mid-season. In any case, there are things to love about all of them and we'll dive into some of that this week.

Joining us to talk about some legendary two-parters are Patreon producers Christina Werther and Chris Tribuzio! It's a fun discussion that we hope you'll enjoy. Plus, like the topic at hand, it takes more than an hour to talk about this fantastic topic!

Plus, since there's no possible way we could talk about them all, we want to know YOUR favorite two-parters! Let us know on social media!

It was an amazing night and we raised money to provide just over 56,000 meals to people in need! While our campaign is over, you can still help those in need by donating to Feeding America directly through their website.

THIS OR THAT

What were the choices Jonathan Frakes had to make in the game we played with him? See the images that he saw on the Trek Geeks website!

Coda Jun 24, 2020

Show notes

Star Trek has always told stories about the human condition and, this week, we look at an episode that truly explores "the final frontier."

"Coda" from the third season of Star Trek: Voyager is part time loop and part alien infiltration. In it we see Kathryn Janeway die over and over and over--and we learn things about her crew that we might not have learned otherwise. It is an amazing episode with layer upon layer of character building.

We'll dive in on this hugely underrated episode in this week's Trek Geeks and tell you why it's better than you probably think it is!

Plus news and discount codes from our friends at FanSets and Science Division!

Dr. Erin Teaches Science to Two Idiots Jun 17, 2020

Show notes

What happens when you take someone who is an astrophysicist and consults on Star Trek and subject her to explaining the science behind things to...well...us?

We're not sure, either, but we're pretty sure that her head exploding might be a possible outcome!

You might have seen her at STLV or maybe even in her online series, "Dr. Erin Explains the Universe." This week, we welcome Dr. Erin MacDonald to the podcast to talk about the science of things in Star Trek and whether or not some of these things make sense.

Plus, we'll talk about the rescheduled dates for STLV and give you an update on our online fundraiser for Feeding America in this week's episode of The Flagship of the Trek Geeks Podcast Network!

Lost Audio from Kingsland Jun 10, 2020

Show notes

It's only taken us four years but this week on Trek Geeks, we'll right a grievous error.

If you recall our 100th episode, "A Journey to Future's Past, Part I: Beaming Aboard Star Trek Continues," we told the story of our trip Kingsland, Georgia and visit to sets of this legendary fan film series. We told you about the people we met and how our love for The Original Series had been rekindled. We brought you a story of family. It was the most ambitious episode we've ever done: an audio documentary in the style of National Public Radio, and it's become a favorite among Trek Geeks listeners. It was an episode we still get feedback about, and it even led to us being a finalist for the Parsec Awards.

It was our every intention to bring you part two of that story, and then CBS started making more Star Trek. They launched Discovery and we started a second podcast. Then we started a network. Now with eight Star Trek series in some form of production, we decided that we needed to bring you the conversations from Day 2 of our trip.

So, in this episode, you'll hear from Grant Imahara, Wyatt Lenhart, and our dear friend Kasey Shafsky. Plus, we'll also have some audio of our final walkthrough of the sets before we said goodbye to the Starship Enterprise for the last time.

Plus, find out about our charity livestream with Jonathan Frakes from Star Trek: The Next Generation coming up on June 11th! Get all the details!
