This classic exposition of Trinitarian doctrine eloquently sets forth the distinction yet perpetual communion of the divine Persons. Without explicitly calling the Spirit "God, " St Basil demonstrates that He, like the Son, is of the same nature with the Father.
Confessions is generally considered one of Augustine's most important texts. It is widely seen as the first Western Christian autobiography ever written, and was an influential model for Christian writers throughout the Middle Ages. Professor Henry Chadwick wrote that Confessions will "always rank among the great masterpieces of western literature."
The work is not a complete autobiography, as it was written during Saint Augustine's early 40s and he lived long afterwards, producing another important work, The City of God. Nonetheless, it does provide an unbroken record of his development of thought and is the most complete record of any single person from the 4th and 5th centuries. It is a significant theological work, featuring spiritual meditations and insights.
In the work, Augustine writes about how he regrets having led a sinful and immoral life. He discusses his regrets for following the Manichaean religion and believing in astrology. He writes about his friend Nebridius's role in helping to persuade him that astrology was not only incorrect but evil, and Saint Ambrose's role in his conversion to Christianity. The first nine books are autobiographical and the last four are commentary and significantly more philosophical. He shows intense sorrow for his sexual sins and writes on the importance of sexual morality. The books were written as prayers to God, thus the title, based on the Psalms of David; and it begins with "For Thou hast made us for Thyself and our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee." In Eugenics and Other Evils, Chesterton attacked eugenics as Parliament was moving towards passage of the Mental Deficiency Act 1913. Some backing the ideas of eugenics called for the government to sterilise people deemed "mentally defective"; this view did not gain popularity but the idea of segregating them from the rest of society and thereby preventing them from reproducing did gain traction. These ideas disgusted Chesterton who wrote, "It is not only openly said, it is eagerly urged that the aim of the measure is to prevent any person whom these propagandists do not happen to think intelligent from having any wife or children." He blasted the proposed wording for such measures as being so vague as to apply to anyone, including "Every tramp who is sulk, every labourer who is shy, every rustic who is eccentric, can quite easily be brought under such conditions as were designed for homicidal maniacs. That is the situation; and that is the point ... we are already under the Eugenist State; and nothing remains to us but rebellion." He derided such ideas as founded on nonsense, "as if one had a right to dragoon and enslave one's fellow citizens as a kind of chemical experiment". Chesterton mocked the idea that poverty was a result of bad breeding: "[it is a] strange new disposition to regard the poor as a race; as if they were a colony of Japs or Chinese coolies ... The poor are not a race or even a type. It is senseless to talk about breeding them; for they are not a breed. They are, in cold fact, what Dickens describes: 'a dustbin of individual accidents,' of damaged dignity, and often of damaged gentility."

St. Bonaventure, the Seraphic Doctor, and also called the “Second Founder” of the Fransican order offers this brief work on the way of holiness. Written at the request and for Blessed Isabella a Poor Clare and friend of Bonaventure (who was the sister of St. Louis King of France) it is a brief, but complete treatise on ascetical and mystical theology. Wit and charm abound in the work, such is the chapter where Bonaventure discusses chattering nuns and so is the seriousness of devotion in the Chapters on the passion of Christ. Preparation for death is one of the most important parts of life. During the Middle Ages, there were many poems and treatises published on this topic, and written for every sort of person. But during the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, this sort of spirituality fell out of fashion. Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino, known during his working life for his skills with law and argument, in old age found himself preparing for death by writing simple books that returned to the simple spirituality he'd been taught in childhood. They became bestsellers, and in death he came to be honored as a saint and a Doctor of the Church. This translation is the 1847 one by Father John Dalton, a Catholic priest.
It includes only Volume I, which gives precepts on how to live well while healthy, and does not include its 17th chapter (on devotion to the Virgin Mary) or Volume II, which gives precepts on how to conduct yourself when near death and includes the summing-up of the whole book. Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J. (Italian: Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino; 4 October 1542 – 17 September 1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. He was a professor of theology and later rector of the Roman College, and in 1602 became archbishop of Capua. Bellarmine supported the reform decrees of the Council of Trent. He was canonized in 1930 and named a Doctor of the Church. Bellarmine is also widely remembered for his role in the Giordano Bruno affair and the Galileo affair.

St. John Damascene, the 8th century Doctor of the Church known for his defense of venerating holy images against the Iconoclasts wrote a series of homilies on the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. These homilies are a wonderful combination of both praise of the Virgin and theology concerning her person. These homilies are not limited to being useful for the Feast of the Assumption, but expound greatly upon the human and divine nature of Christ, Mary’s Perpetual Virginity, her being totally immaculate, why the Virgin Mary died even if she was free from sin, and contain many delightful parables to explain the importance of praising her.

Pseudo-Dionysius - On the Heavenly Hierarchy
This book was the inspiration for most of Thomas Aquinas hierarchy on angels. It also inspired the gothic architecture, with Abbot Suger in Saint-Denis.
St. Benedict’s teaching found in his Rule and also from the accounts of his life from such authors of St. Gregory the Great made large impacts on the Church, Europe and the entire world. St. Benedict’s contribution remedied many problems that where found in contemporary monasticism at the time and developed a system of discipline and piety that was not just suited to a few limited men of great virtue but to every Christian. To be in the Spirit of St. Benedict, is to become a complete Christian. He also elevated the importance of communal prayer in the Divine Office more so than his contemporaries in monasticism which put greater emphasis on private prayer a trait that would stay with the Roman Church even to modern times. The exterior fasts and abstinence where similar to that of normal laity or what peasants would have done vs the extreme fasts of coenobites of Egypt. Those familiar with the authentic lives of St. Francis and St. Therese will see many similarities on his teaching on the spiritual life.
