Tired: The Car Podcast For People Who Understand That Cars Are Bad

Want all the episodes? Subscribe at https://www.patreon.com/TiredPod to get the good stuff. One free episode every week, and an extra weekly episode for subscribers!

What’s the pod about? Look, cars are terrible. On a macro scale, their impact has been catastrophic, directly killing millions of people, contributing to a climate emergency that will kill millions more, and irrevocably reshaping our physical landscape in ways that have only made us more alienated from and hostile towards one another. On an individual level, their effects are equally ruinous, luring us with their promise of freedom into 84-month notes on blinged-out depreciating assets (if you’re like other people), or driveways and garages full of shitbox beaters and doomed projects (if you’re like us). Terrible! And yet we love them. They fascinate us. It’s enough to make a person… TIRED.

Peter Hughes, Rory Carroll, and Matthew Riley attempt to map out the contours of this paradox, with lots of detours along the way.

Episode 129: Vivid, Provocative, and Ragingly... Oct 18, 2026
    Show notes

Rory reports in from seeing the Jaguar Type 01, Peter briefly recaps Petit Le Mans and leaves us some final notes on IMSA for the season, and we check in on Brock Yates ca. 1999 as he grapples with the cultural image of the motorcycle. Wrestles, even. Grasping, etc. Rory's Jaguar write-up at Alloy: https://alloymag.com/jaguar-type-01/ Peter made a guitar drone record: https://peterpeterhughes.bandcamp.com/album/dissociation-loops Your producer pal Matty got a real job and it's really harshing his whole vibe, but episodes will continue to be edited after the 9-5 grind. Look forward to another Patreon episode soon, and also of course every time we mention ex-autojourno pod Tran Girlismo on the show, we gotta send you to Tran Girlismo: https://www.patreon.com/collection/1971037?view=expanded

    Show notes

Rory pitches the Alloy TV show and reports in from Goodwood, including chance encounters (positive and negative) and how it still manages to be cool & feel good. Plus, Peter reports back from IMSA... how's that going, man? Oh boy. As always, keep up with Rory over at Alloy! Here's that Muzquiz piece: https://alloymag.com/alternatives/ and Amy Shore's photos: https://alloymag.com/lens-goodwood-revival-26/ (p.s. if viewing that Goodwood recap on your desktop browser, just click and drag the photos with your mouse to look through Amy's cool pix!) Latter audio interstitial (instrumental) is a looping gtr intro from Peter's gig in Ithaca because I (matty) get to pick the music cues hehehe :) And you can hear more of his instrumental stuff here: https://peterpeterhughes.bandcamp.com/album/dissociation-loops Earlier audio interstitial with the line about "Debordian guile" is from "The 101st" by Franklin Bruno, released on Shrimper 7" A Sand Dollar Relief Map in 1995. (Franklin's newer band The Human Hearts has a new record coming out in November called Faith & Credit that is very good!!)

Also: more EV talk, which continues into episode 126... Rory's summer of misadventure is chronicled here at Alloy: https://alloymag.com/baffled/ Peter made a guitar drone record: https://peterpeterhughes.bandcamp.com/album/dissociation-loops Your producer pal Matty got a real job and it's really harshing his whole vibe, but episodes will continue to be edited after the 9-5 grind. Please consider subscribing to our show (episode 126 has anecdotes including boats, cult recruitment, and AO3) and also of course supporting ex-autojourno pod Tran Girlismo, which shares our vibes but has overtaken us in regularly scheduled updates: https://www.patreon.com/collection/1971037?view=expanded

Episode 122: Are They Still Having Fun Out There? Aug 08, 2026
    Show notes

Peter and Rory saw plenty of chaos and racing under caution at Watkins Glen... and then came Road America. Plus: struggles with agility at GM, and some wrenching talk! There's fun stuff in the pipeline! (But hi it's me your producer pal Matty, delays getting this episode up were totally due to meeeee and irl stuff, mea culpa, we actually have a big pile of fun digression stuff I'm going to sort through for a Patreon ep. And Rory's just call audio in the 2nd half of this one but hopefully there's not too much audio weirdness from editing that together. Thank you againnnn

Episode 121: Why Am I The Guy On The Roof? Jul 31, 2026
    Show notes

Peter and Rory bring a Watkins Glen anecdote, Matty explains why the pod is his only source of income again, and we ask: when the Air Quality Index does that, what exactly are we all supposed to... do? And of course, our usual links to this that & the other: You can sign up for an Alloy membership here: https://alloymag.com/sign-up/ Peter's got new music out this year: https://peterpeterhughes.bandcamp.com/album/dissociation-loops Your producer pal Matty would like to thank you all for sticking with us during the slow summer updates. We're trying to get back to recording twice a week! Production note, also: usually for music interstitials I've been using Peter's music, but just for on-topic funsies, the short interstitials in this episode include Nothing Painted Blue's "Going to Fontana" and an instrumental selection from Charlie McAlister (RIP) in "Darla Come Down From Jackson" from his classic Mississippi Luau, and also "Raise This Barn" by Wckr Spgt. There's also the other thing but that's in the background. It's fine.
