Those Conspiracy Guys — Comedy
Those Conspiracy Guys

Those Conspiracy Guys is a history, comedy and true crime podcast from Ireland produced and presented by Gordon Rochford and the topics discussed are varied and wide-ranging; from the speculations on the out-there conspiracy theories like aliens, time travel, and ancient civilisations to researched discussions on the more grounded, historical and provable conspiracies like political and financial corruption, scientific chicanery and secret government agency shenanigans.
In long-form group discussions; interviews with authors and experts; live stage shows and streams with an eager audience; and collaborations with other conspiracy creators; Gordo examines all the wildest notions and most unbelievable theories in the ever broadening genre of ‘conspiracy’. From the high-concept topics like inter-dimensional lizard men, complicated assassination plots and potential future technologies like alternative simulated universes; to the much more tangible topics like discussing serial killers and mysterious true crime cases; exploring the history of religions and cult leaders; and historically profiling the lives and times of some of the most influential people to have lived, and died.
Those Conspiracy Guys brings you on a light hearted and hilarious exploration of these fantastic stories through thoroughly researched and painstakingly contmeplated production; making it easy and fun for these sometimes heavy and complicated topics to be digested, with lashings of good old irreverend Irish craic from host Gordon Rochford and a cavalcade of hilarious comedians, committed creators and fabulously interesting guests.

Natalee Holloway Jan 19, 2018

Show notes

TRUE CRIME -
On this episode we talk about a mystery still unsolved and a cunning murderer who hides in plain sight, this is the story of the murder of Natalee Holloway. Natalee was on holiday in Aruba on a vacation from college and she went missing just 3 days into the trip. Her body was never found and since 2005 many reports, theories and even witnesses claim to have solved the case, but Natalee remains missing and a murderer still roams free.
Local romeo Joran Van Der Sloot was the prime suspect in the case at the time. In 205 he and his two friends the Kalpoe Brothers were the last one to be seen with Natalee alive as the left a small tourist bar called Carlos and Charlies. Picking up girls was a regular occurrence for these lads but that night went a little bit differently.
Van Der Sloot claims he left Natalee on the beach after some light sexy shenanigans and she was never seen again; so obviously Van Der Sloot was implicated in her disappearance. He denied the claims, then flip flopped and said he did do it, then told many versions of the story to police and even pretended to be his father on the phone to confuse investigators and convinced a friend of his to run a sting operation with a journalist. Seriously crazy stuff.
This episode has twists and turns, some unexpected moments and a load of unbelievable oversights by law enforcement!

Heaven's Gate Cult Jan 17, 2018

Show notes

DEEP DIVE -
On this episode we talk about one of the biggest mass suicides on American soil and an organisation that shook the American people to the core in the late 90s, The Heavens Gate Cult. Classed as crackpots and 'Techno Pagans’ the cult operated from 1976 until the mass suicide event in 1997 where 39 people died by ingesting poison laced applesauce, and lying down peacefully to die with a purple shroud over their face. This strangest of scenes was orchestrated by the cults leader Marshall Herff Applewhite who founded the cult with his wife and partner Bonnie Lou Nettles.
They allegedly met in a psychiatric hospital where Nettles was a nurse and Applewhite a patient. Suspected schizophrenia was the cause of Applewhite's mental maladies and when paired with Nettle’s support and somewhat similar delusions, the recipe for a crazy religious organisation was born.Using mysticism, theosophy and fundamental elements of many religions, Nettles and Applewhite created a UFO focussed cult that appealed to the more modern faithful follower. God and Jesus didnt do it anymore for people coming out of the swinging 60s and the promise of hitching a ride, body and soul, on a real honest to goodness UFO into another galaxy was a dream for these cult members.
After Nettles death in 1985 the cult belief system took a dark turn and self mutilations, like castration, began to take place. Polygamy, starvation, celibacy, and mind control techniques like regiments sleep and food and constant humming were all inflicted on the members of the cult in Bonnies absence. Applewhite hatched a plan and created a new doctrine where only the spirit would now be accepted into the spaceship and in 1997 they got their chance. The Hale-Bopp Comet was to sail past the Earth and Marshall convinced the followers of the cult that there was a spaceship in its wake; piloted by Bonnie Nettles spirit 12 years after her death. The all believed and went about video taping confessional suicide notes on tape and describing their justification for the mass suicide that was about to take place. We discuss the origins of the cult, the nature of the relationship between Applewhite and Nettles and the mentality of the members to take their own lives.

History of The Mormons Jan 03, 2018

Show notes

DEEP DIVE -
On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we dive deep into the history of one of the most popular religions in the US that is widely spreading around the world and came from the mind of one man with his face in a big hat, Joseph Smith and the history of The Mormons. In the very early 19th century a wave of spiritualism called the Second Great Awakening overtook America and the afterlife, religion and the occult were a fascination of everyone looking for titilation and an entertaining break from religious piousness.
Joseph Smith, from a family prone to visions, had God and Jesus come to him at age 15 and prophesise to him that he would be the leader of a new religion that would put right the wrongs of the church as it was. Using magical crystals and some golden plates that were shown to him by an ancient angel he was able to write the lost scriptures of the Christ after he moved to America and he preached this as the gospel truth
He gained many followers and soon thousands followed Smiths teachings. They would band together in villages, doing business with each other and eventually influencing politics. They were persecuted for their beliefs, including polygamy, and were driven from many towns and cities to the outskirts of the US. Mormons finally settled in the Utah territory, before it was part of the States, and made a quiet life for themselves there. Or so the history books would have you believe; but war and massacres abound as the Mormons fought for their independence while also killing a few travellers on their way to california for the gold rush
Using The Book of Mormon as their weapon of the lord their faith prevailed and they grew larger still in numbers. Arrangements with presidents and governors saw them safe in Utah and their slow spread worldwide has come from a network of powerful people in their ranks. Some even say this is a cult and the members are mind controlled, and borrowing heavily from many other religions and integrating some of the secret practices of secret organisations like Freemasons, its hard to totally dismiss that notion.

Jimmy Savile and The Paedophile Scandal Dec 19, 2017

Show notes

DEEP DIVE -
On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we talk about undoubtedly one of the worst and most prolific paedophiles in history; Jimmy Savile. We chat about how his high powered career at the BBC, his tireless charity work and his lofty appointments by The Pope and The Queen of England couldn’t keep the truth from coming out after his death in 2011 and reports of up to 450 men, women and children suffered at the cigar stained hands of this monster.
Starting as a DJ in the 40s and working his way through the ranks of the modern media, Jimmy Savile was at the forefront of what would become a broadcasting behemoth. The BBC went through an unprecedented scandal after Savile’s death and all eyes were on them, how they responded, others who were involved, and police investigations sought to discover Savile’s accomplices and maybe even his customers.
We talk about his early life, his propensity for psychopathy, the complicity of his underlings in the BBC and the institutions where he was installed as a charitable benefactor, the children hospitals and homes where staff turned a blind eye to the very obvious and unspeakable crimes he committed on the very young, the very old and even the disabled. With a veil of benevolence and a way with the media, Savile hid in plain sight and his victims only spoke out after confirmation of his death.
With the sexual assault allegations levelled against Savile, a dam was burst and many other more sinister crimes were alleged. The Metropolitan Police Service launched Operation Yewtree, one of dozens of sexual abuse investigations opened at the time, to try to find any links to still living perpetrators. Modern child abuse scandals like Pizzagate, also bear the marks of Savile’s actions and there are strong suspicions that he wasn’t even the top of the pile when it came to these horrific crimes.

Chikatilo - The Russian Cannibal Dec 08, 2017

Show notes

TRUE CRIME -
On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we talk about one of the craziest and most prolific murderers the world has ever seen; and one who was left roam the Russian countryside for almost 30 years without conviction, killing and eating his way through 56 victims in the most brutal and gruesome murders either side of the Iron Curtain, Andrei Chikatilo - The Russian Cannibal
Also known as the Butcher of Rostov, Chikatilo had a messed up childhood in a famine torn Ukraine. With maternal sexual abuse and some questionable choices in his early teens, Chikatilo resigned himself to the fact that he would never be normally sexual. He got away scot-free with the murder of a young girl near a hut he owned, and despite clear evidence, another man was arrested and convicted. Chikatilo, the killer, was born.
After a shameful youth and a bogus career as a teacher where he was consistantly ridiculed by the students, Chikatilo finally snapped and attacked one of his students and the wave of attacks and sexual nightmares began. He got a job that would keep him mobile throughout the country without much suspicion and he would attack and kill at will.
After capture Chikatilo would become one of the most famous murderers in Russian history and officially their first 'Serial Killer'. his courtroom shenanigans made it seem like he was crazy, but he was still tried and convicted. Mark and I discuss the upbringing and the psychopathic tendencies of this Soviet mad man and decide if it was his destiny to become this monster to dissuade so many more from going down this very dark path!

Operation Paperclip Nov 19, 2017

Show notes

DEEP DIVE -
On this episode we talk about one of the darkest patches on US history and a pan-atlantic collusion that could have been the driving force behind the global actions of military, scientific and political powers for the last 70 years, Operation Paperclip.
In the last days of WW2 the Nazi elite were wondering what their future would look like. Impending trials for war crimes would definitely be a possibility; and some took the opportunity by pawning their military and scientific knowledge in exchange for freedom and exclusion from prosecution in Nuremberg.
Operation Overcast and later Operation Paperclip was the US intelligence services plan to gain as much Nazi engineering, military, scientific and espionage intelligence they could before the Russians. Flocks of now ex-Nazis with no fuhrer to guide them, ran into the arms of the waiting US and Russian soldiers on both sides of Germany. They were interviewed and spilled all the info for a chance to be installed into US military intelligence, and in some cases, get to stay living in Germany spying on the USSR from their own home town.
The US has had a shady history at the best of times, but harbouring Nazis and cooperating with them as they greatly advance the space program, increase military might, give intel and previous files owned by the SS to the US intelligence community and eventually become revered members of western society, made a lot of people suspicious of the motives of these ex-Nazis.
Names like Wernher Von Braun, Josef Mengele, Arthur Rudolph and Klaud Barbie are just a couple of the 1600 scientists brought to the states for their knowledge. But on this episode we argue the ethics of sucha an information acquisition, how the scientific experiments done on prisoners of war can be not only flawed but just cruel torture; and the collusion of huge respected organisation to smuggle uninterred Nazis out of Germany to escape prosecution in a program known as the Ratlines.

Amanda Knox Nov 12, 2017

Show notes

TRUE CRIME -
On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we discuss the still mysterious case of the murder of Meredith Kircher, more famously known as the Amanda Knox case. Knox and her boyfriend Raphael Sollecito were arrested for the murder of Kircher in 2007 and spent 4 years in jail until their case was unprecidentedly thrown out and they were set free.
Kircher was brutally murdered in the home she and Knox shared in a small Italian town called Perugia. They were both on a study abroad trip and Knox and Kircher only knew each other for a couple of days. Knox also only knew her then lover Sollecito for a couple of weeks and made the case all the more mysterious.
A man called Rudy Guede, a known burglar, was also arrested for the crime as well as Patrick Lumumba, Knox's boss in her waitressing job. The police incompetence in this case was astounding and the real killer could still be on the loose. Many think Knox and Sollecito were guilty and the legal system in Italy was torn apart with the release of the two in 2011. The case went to the Supreme Court and the appeal fell in Knox's favour but not after her and Sollecito's lives were ruined by salacious tabloid press.
The facts in this one are very much left to interpretation and Claire and I discuss at length the intricacies of the case; the suppositions made by the prosecution including the public prosecutor who thought he was some sort of rock star, Guiliano Mignini. We also discuss the role of the tabloid media in the case and how they swayed the public to presume guilt. Knox is still thought by some to have 'got away with murder' but what do you think?

The West Memphis 3 Oct 18, 2017

Show notes

TRUE CRIME -
On this episode of Those Conspiracy Guys we discuss one of the more famous miscarraiges of justice with an Arkansas trio of young men, known as The West Memphis 3, who were convicted of the murders of three boys in the city of West Memphis, served 18 years in prison, and were released after a celebrity star studded campaign for justice allowed them to be set free under a legal technicality.
Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Miskelly Jnr were said to have brutally taken the lives of Stevie Branch, Chris Byers and Michael Moore in what was purported to the court to be a satanic paedophile sex ritual. These lads were put through the legal system ringer and evidence and testimony stacked up against them.
With new evidence, reinterviewing of witnesses, multiple documentaries and a concerted public effort to rebalance the scales of justice, the West Memphis 3 were released from prison in 2011. But the question remains, who did kill those three little boys? Fingers are pointed at many people involved closely with the case and even a few mysterious figures. Cormac Moore from the Project 10 podcast joins me to discuss the various theories and how the facts in this case were grossly misrepresented to convict some innocent people.
