What can we say when we just want our drinking to be a non-issue? How do we turn down alcohol without making it a big deal for everyone around us? Can we use our tone of voice and facial expressions and body language to adjust the message we want to deliver? How can we tap into a powerful energy and shut down any further dialogue when we refuse a drink? Annie Grace answers.

A self-described “closet nondrinker,” Carolyn is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in working with people-pleasing perfectionists who struggle with anxiety. She uses brainspotting, a technique that leverages the close connection between our brains and our vision to bring relief from symptoms of anxiety, shame, overwhelm, trauma, and many other ways we, as humans, can feel emotionally and physically stuck. On today’s episode, Carolyn opens up about how she tried to keep her decision not to drink off the radar screens of the people she drank to fit in with, and how This Naked Mind and brainspotting have helped her create lasting change.

EP 286: Reader Question - Are you sober? Jun 06, 2020
    Show notes

“Annie, are you sober,” asked a journalist. It was the first time Annie had been asked the question. The assumption is that Annie Grace is sober. Right? But, what does sober really mean? And, does Annie consider herself sober?

Let me ask you a question. What is better than change? Lasting change, of course. If you've had trouble making change stick, either with alcohol or in any other area of your life, you are in for a treat. I created the 100 Days of Lasting Change to ensure that we don't just change for a moment, but we truly transform for a lifetime. This program is so close to my heart. Thousands of people have been through it, and their results are incredible. But don't take my word for it, check it out at thisnakedmind.com/100days.

EP 285: Naked Life Story - Melissa Jun 05, 2020
    Show notes

Growing up in Australia, Melissa had no idea how powerful alcohol was. Drinking first popped onto her radar screen around age 17 and she began partying the same way all her friends did - blacking out, getting sick, being hungover. It was what they did and no one questioned their behavior. Melissa loved the fun and always found people who wanted to drink. At 35, she decided to try moderating her drinking. A few years later she realized she was an “I’ve had too much, give me another” drinker who never intentionally refused a drink. It was time to change.

Are you looking to connect with like-minded people? Sometimes maybe you feel like you have all this information from doing This Naked Mind or The Alcohol Experiment, but you’re living in a world where people don’t speak your language.

That is why I created The Exchange. A place where you can really give back and get the support you need. If this sounds great to you, check it out at thisnakedmind.com/exchange.

EP 284: Reader Question - How can I support a spouse who's trying to live alcohol free? May 30, 2020
    Show notes

What can a wife to do support her husband who set a goal to stop drinking for a year, gave up alcohol for two months, and then she came home to find him drinking? Should she get angry? Give him tough love? Encourage him to keep trying? Leave him alone to wallow in his judgment and self-doubt? Annie shares her thoughts on what exactly constitutes success and how we can take what we interpret as failure and use it to our advantage.

Right now, for the first time ever, I am doing something that I think you will find incredibly valuable and amazing. Here's the thing, I've been asking myself, why do some people effortlessly stop drinking while other people struggle? Why do some people who haven't drank in years still miss it, still feel like they're missing out, still even feel a little self-pity? Why can't I do that anymore? What's going on? What's the difference? The thing is these questions have kept me up at night and I have spent years now diving into the science, diving into literally hundreds of interviews and thousands and thousands of surveys of feedback from people trying to understand why. What makes it different? I think I finally really understand it. And I've put all of this together into something that I believe is one of the best things I've ever created.

It is a modular membership program that is coach-led so that people can find freedom faster. I read recently that the average time from when somebody recognizes a problem with alcohol to when they solve it can be up to 15 years. I know that I get thousands of emails with people saying, "Man, I'm so happy I found your work. My only regret is that I didn't find it sooner." So I wanted to put everything I've known so far, all of the research, all of the interviews, all of your experiences, all of the stories into this coach-led program that is truly customizable for you. So if you need it for a month and you find your freedom, great. But if you need to be with us for longer, that's also fine. Right now, for a limited time, this program is at a massive discount just because I recognize what's going on with the world.

So if you are at all curious about this and you want to know more and you're ready to really make alcohol small and irrelevant in your life, once and for good to not only where you're not drinking, not stopping just at the behavior of drinking, but actually where it feels effortless not to drink. Where it feels easy, where you never feel like you're missing out, where you always actually feel like you're more joyful and happier. I know that's hard to believe, and it was for me too, but it's okay if you're skeptical. It works anyway. If you're curious about this at all, check it out, nakedmindpath.com. It's open right now. It's closing May 31st. So if you want to get in on this first-ever launch of this coach-led program, that is totally modular, that you can come and take as much time or as little time as you need to truly make alcohol small and irrelevant in your life, join me. nakedmindpath.com. I can't wait to see you there.

EP 283: Coaching Questions with Scott Pinyard May 29, 2020
    Show notes

On today’s episode, This Naked Mind head coach Scott Pinyard dives into four terrific questions, some specific to not drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic - they are: The longer we stay home, the more intense my cravings become; what can I do to stray strong? I think I’m ready to quit drinking but with the pandemic am I just setting myself up to fail? I was 30 days alcohol free when we started quarantining and I caved when I got anxious; how can I turn my anger into motivation? I did the Live Alcohol Experiment but as soon as it ended I felt to pull to drink; how can I stay motivated beyond the 30 days?

EP 282: Reader Question - Are you really having more fun in life without drinking alcohol? May 23, 2020
    Show notes

We hear it all the time. It must suck not to drink. Life must be so boring. But, did you know there is definitive evidence that removing alcohol does not strip away our ability to have fun? Did you know that it’s actually alcohol that steals the brain’s ability to have fun? Annie Grace explains.
