Grease (1978) w/ Todd Gilchrist Feb 03, 2022

Show notes

"She looks too pure to be pink."

Our wonderful supporters on Patreon helped us reach our very first stretch goal, and as our thank-you, we're covering the one teen girl movie that BJ Colangelo struggles to be an apologist for, 1978's GREASE. In this whopping two-hour episode, The Wives Colangelo are joined by film critic Todd Gilchrist, an amazing human being and BJ's GREASE loving nemesis. Can Harmony stay neutral or will she be swayed by BJ or Todd? Give a listen to what may very well be the best episode yet!

A Walk to Remember 20th Anniversary Jan 27, 2022

Show notes

"Maybe God has a bigger plan for me than I had for myself. Like this journey never ends. Like you were sent to me because I'm sick. To help me through all this. You're my angel."

In honor of the film's 20th anniversary, The Wives Colangelo are busting out their Youth Group finest and talking about A WALK TO REMEMBER. In a rare turn of events, Harmony is a bit more kind to the film than BJ, but then again, y'all already know how she feels about cancer movies. Be our Only Hope, and enjoy!

Eighth Grade (2018) Jan 20, 2022

Show notes

“Do I make you sad? I don't know. Sometimes I think that when I'm older, I'll have a daughter of my own or something... and I feel like if she was like me, then being her mom would make me sad all the time. I'd love her because she's my daughter, but I think if she turned out like me that being her mom would make me really sad."

If you're like us, junior high was a f*cking nightmare and you couldn't pay us to go back to those years. Well, this week we're joined by the amazing Addison Peacock to dive into Bo Burnham's EIGHTH GRADE, and have what is essentially an on-air therapy session. There's some movie talk, for sure, but this movie brought up so many feelings for all of us that we couldn't help but talk about. We hope you enjoy this very awkward, very vulnerable exploration of what it means to be in junior high, and how it feels to think about after all these years.

Scream (1996) Jan 13, 2022

Show notes

“Don't you blame the movies. Movies don't create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative!”

Wes Craven's SCREAM has been terrorizing audiences for over 25 years. With the fifth installment on the way, we want to revisit the ultimate teen slasher. BJ talks about her life-long fear of Ghostface, Harmony talks about how SCARY MOVIE has broken her brain, and together they discuss the brilliant subversion of Kevin Williamson's script.

Not Another Teen Movie (2001) Jan 06, 2022

Show notes

Janey Briggs: "I read Sylvia Plath, I listen to 'Bikini Kill' and I eat Tofu. I am a unique rebel."

Mitch Briggs: "It sounds more like you're a lesbo.”

Now that Harmony has actually seen a huge chunk of the teen movie canon, it was her idea that we'd finally watch the movie that parodies them all, NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE. Together The Wives Colangelo discuss how this movie somehow aged better and worse than expected at the same time, the ineffectiveness of parody that hates its subject matter, and the saving grace of America's ass, Chris Evans.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) Dec 30, 2021

Show notes

"You just feel ignored for long enough and it's just nice to feel special sometimes."

We're saying goodbye to 2021 by discussing a movie that feels like a celebration, and makes you want to stay up all night, NICK & NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST. BJ talks about her love of the book by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, Harmony waxes poetic about the music of the film serving as an additional character, and The Wives Colangelo admit that they are absolutely each other's Nick and Norah.

Black Xmas (2006) Dec 23, 2021

Show notes

“You're my family now.”

In honor of the Christmas holiday, we're tackling the second BLACK CHRISTMAS movie, the high-camp slasher from 2006. BJ and Harmony disagree pretty vehemently on this one, and our friends from the Aughtsterion Podcast stop by to give a little more love to one of the most polarizing horror movie remakes in history. Happy Holidays, prom party. Don't make any cookies out of your mom's flesh!

Show notes

“People are scared of things that are different.”

Calling all weird kids and mall goths, it's time to relive our inner outsider feeling because we're talking EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. This week the wives are joined by filmmaker A.K. Espada to debate who this movie is for, relive the feelings of being made to feel othered, and dive into how Edward himself feels like a vessel for the alien experience of growing up as a teenage girl.

Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) Dec 09, 2021

Show notes

"Mom gave me this 9mil for my birthday, I'll always remember what she wrote in the card. "Jesus loves winners". That's why, no matter what I do, I aim to win."

Grab your tap shoes and put some vaseline on your teeth, because we're going to Mount Rose, Minnesota and talking DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. BJ talks a lot about her history as a child and teenage beauty queen, Harmony dives deep into the peculiar culture of Midwestern small towns where everybody knows everybody, both lament the glory of Kirstie Alley's incredible hair, and we discuss why we think this movie was a financial and critical flop upon release that eventually gained a cult following

Lez Bomb (2018) Nov 25, 2021

Show notes

"This is not how I saw my life. But it's so much better than anything I could've imagined. I wanna be with you."

In honor of everyone getting together to stuff our faces, avoid our families, and try to erase all of the lies fed to us during our elementary school educations surrounding Thanksgiving, we're talking about the coming-out queer holiday romcom, LEZ BOMB. We tell our coming out stories, talk about the weirdness that is introducing your partner to your family, and BJ cries a bunch. Enjoy!
