Bend it Like Beckham (2002) w/ Alexia Arani, PhD Aug 25, 2022

Show notes

“Anyone can cook aloo gobi, but who can bend a ball like Beckham?”

This week we're talking about the teen girl movie that made all the athletic gals feel validated, all of the budding queer girls question their feelings on Keira Knightley, and gave Indian teen girls a chance to see themselves on screen as never before. We're joined by educator and podcaster Alexia Arani, PhD to break down this deliciously rich film. This is a real fun episode, especially because Harmony had no idea what the movie was even about because she had only seen very misleading poster art.

Dirty Dancing (1987) Aug 18, 2022

Show notes

"I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”

DIRTY DANCING turns 35 this year, so we're having difficult conversations about Johnny Castle and Frances "Baby" Houseman's relationship, dissecting what makes Swayze such a hunky leading man, and praising the groundbreaking abortion subplot that was decades ahead of its time.

As an added bonus, Momma Colangelo makes a little cameo appearance!

Note from the hosts: We absolutely had a Freudian slip and said "Paxton" when we meant "Pullman" while talking about INDEPENDENCE DAY. We had recorded our WEIRD SCIENCE Patreon episode (in your inbox on Friday!) right before so he was on our mind.

SORRY, MR. PRESIDENT!

Heathers (1989) Aug 11, 2022

Show notes

"Dear Diary, my teenage angst bullshit has a body count.”

This Ends at Prom is celebrating 2 years and 100 episodes by tackling one of the most highly requested films since the show's launch, the black comedy classic HEATHERS. We're exploring the ways this film completely changed the landscape of what was possible for teen girl cinema, why the film has become endlessly quotable after all these years, and give a very special thank you to our listeners. We couldn't do it without you. “Our love is God. Let’s go get a slushie.”

A Knight's Tale (2001) w/ Jess Carson Aug 04, 2022

Show notes

"Better a silly girl with a flower than a silly boy with a horse and a stick.”

We're kicking off the month with a trip to the medieval times for the anachronistic classic, A Knight's Tale. This is another one of those movies that on paper seems like a teen boy movie, but I don't know many boys who were watching Heath Ledger change his stars during their sleepovers. We're joined by the absolutely magnificent Jess Carson for this episode. Jess is a Twitch streamer and writer on The Flash on the CW and loves period pieces more than anyone else we know. This episode is so much fun. You're gonna love it.

Daydream Nation (2010) Jul 28, 2022

Show notes

"I know you probably think I'm a manipulative bitch for sleeping with two guys, but try looking at it this way: the sexual revolution is just like any other revolutionthere's gonna be casualties.”

This week we're talking about a forgotten teen film from 2010, misunderstood at the time for its progressive themes and imperfect protagonist. Kat Dennings' Caroline Wexler is the anti-manic pixie dream girl, and a character often regulated to being a "bad influence." We discuss our own "bad girl" moments of high school, in particular, inappropriate relationships with much older partners.

Teaching Mrs. TIngle (1999) w/ Kristen Rogers Anderson Jul 21, 2022

Show notes

"Who do you think you're fooling? You're so scared I can smell it. Your fear is the most predictable thing about you. You've lived your whole life in fear. Terrified of making a mistake, scared to death you won't get that A, that ticket out. Afraid you'll never escape your mother and her name tag. Or your father who won't return your calls.”

Kevin Williamson is known for movies like SCREAM and THE FACULTY, but today we're giving him his flowers for his solo directorial feature, TEACHING MRS. TINGLE. The Wives are joined by Kristen Rogers Anderson of the Guide to the Unknown podcast to talk about the maniacal power of Dame Helen Mirren, the sweetness of Katie Holmes, the undeniable talent of Marisa Coughlan's EXORCIST imitation, and uhhhh Barry Watson's really good hair. This is one of the most underappreciated teen films from the golden year of 1999, and we're here to figure out why.

Unpregnant (2020) Jul 14, 2022

Show notes

"WE'RE GAY AND WE'RE PREGNANT!!!"

If you're listening from America, you probably already know why we chose this week's show. We're here to talk about UNPREGNANT, an abortion road trip movie that tackles the severity of the lengths people are willing to go when they're denied abortion access, without ever feeling like a bad time. The world and the government are making us feel bad enough, we don't need a movie to make it even worse. This film was dropped on HBO Max during 2020 quarantine and went criminally underseen, but might be one of the best movies to watch to help process any feelings you may be having about Roe v. Wade being overturned.

Once Bitten (1985) w/ Brad Michael Elmore Jul 07, 2022

Show notes

"If you guys are so interested in my sexual failures, why don't you go have a few of your own?"

Happy Summerween, Prom Party! As part of our TEEN MOVIE HELL series, this week we're joined by the director of THE WOLFMAN'S HAMMER and the trans-inclusive intersectional feminist vampire girl gang flick BIT to talk about the 80stastic gender-reversed TWILIGHT predecessor, ONCE BITTEN. Together, the trio figure out what makes Jim Carrey's leading feature performance so great, imagine what life would be like as a vampire forced to exclusively feed on high school boys, and break down the brilliant vampire dance-off sequence that has to be seen to be believed.

Shiva Baby (2020) w/ Ariel Fisher Jun 30, 2022

Show notes

"Listen to your mother and don't marry anyone til you've slept with what, at least 10 people?"

As Pride month comes to a close, we're talking about one of the best releases of the last five years, the bisexual Jewish dramedy, SHIVA BABY. The Wives are joined by pansexual Jewish writer, editor, and all-around magical human, Ariel Fisher. Ariel gives us a rundown on Jewish culture, BJ waxes poetic about the ways Jewish and Italian families are eerily similar, and Harmony desperately tries to make sense of a movie she cannot relate to AT ALL.
