Show notes

"I took a photo of us, mid-embrace. When I am old and alone I will remember that I once held something truly beautiful."

It's Harmony's birthday week which means whatever baby wants, baby gets. This year's birthday episode is Richard Ayoade's unconventional coming-of-age black comedy, SUBMARINE. The Wives Colangelo discuss seeing yourself in films that don't exactly showcase your lived experience, appreciate weirdo boys trying their best, and share a lot of personal stories related to the film.

From Justin to Kelly (2003) May 11, 2023

Show notes

Justin: "Hey, you're the girl from the beach."
Kelly: "My friends call me Kelly for short."

May-usical Month continues along with quite possibly the least favorable film ever covered on the show and one that has been loudly disavowed by the star. That's right, it's time for FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY. Harmony breaks down how this film came to be and The Wives Colangelo try their hardest not to short-circuit from laughter. SORRY, KELLY CLARKSON!

Across the Universe (2007) May 04, 2023

Show notes

“Do, do, do, do, do, do. Why isn’t the issue here who I am?!””

May-usical month is back with a vengeance ... and The Beatles! We're kicking off the month by celebrating Julie Taymor's psychedelic, underappreciated jukebox musical. We're talking about the adorable (and insufferable) coming-of-age experience of discovering The Beatles for the first time, why this film resonated so heavily with teen girls, and the fantastical approach the film takes to Vietnam and radicalization.

B*A*P*S (1997) w/ Lyvie Scott Apr 27, 2023

Show notes

“I want to take you out to dinner. Every time we go out we got to watch other people eat. Hell, I wanna eat too.”

If you haven't seen Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle Reid's B.A.P.S., you haven't lived. This week The Wives Colangelo are joined by Lyvie Scott to talk about the criminally underseen satirical comedy about two Georgia homegirls thrust into the polite white society of a wealthy man in Beverly Hills. Let's talk about why this film deserves to be a cult classic, and why racism pushed this hidden gem out of the reassessment conversation.

Raw (2016) w/ Vanessa Guerrero Apr 20, 2023

Show notes

"Why didn't you fight back?"

Coming of age isn't always about prom dresses and virginity pacts, sometimes it's a lot more... raw. This week The Wives Colangelo are joined by the brilliant Vanessa Guerrero to discuss Julia Ducournau's coming-of-rage masterpiece, RAW. Together they discuss why cannibalism stories are so prominent in teen horror, what it feels like to put on femininity as a costume, and why it's so satisfying to watch someone just rip something apart with their teeth.

We're diving into the grandmother of cringe coming-of-age films by tackling Todd Solondz's magnificent WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE. Join the Wives Colangelo as they discuss laughing in the face of trauma, why Heather Matarazzo is a natural treasure, and why only '90s kids remember what a screwed-up time it was to grow up.
