SPOS #649 - Hyperfocus With Chris Bailey Dec 16, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #649 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #649 - Host: Mitch Joel. What's the move that you make after you graduate from business school? Many take a job and figure out if that path is for them, or if they need to strike out on their own. Chris Bailey got several job offers, but turned them all down. He had a different plan. For one year, he devoured everything on the subject of productivity. At the end of every day, he would write. This lead to his blog, A Year of Productivity. That was just the beginning. From there, he started to interview productivity experts from around the world, dug into deep academic and scientific research, and has conducted countless experiments on himself. A true guinea pig for productivity, Chris wants to become the most productive as humanly possible. After that, he wrote his first book, The Productivity Project. Now, he's back with his recently published sophomore business book effort, Hyperfocus - How to Be More Productive in a World of Distraction. Want to be more productive? Want to know what it really takes (and how to really think about it)? This might be the show for you. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #646 - Healthier Networking With Karen Wickre Nov 25, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #646 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #646 - Host: Mitch Joel. It's a pretty amazing life. Karen Wickre has been involved in the communications space for a very long time. She's based in Silicon Valley, sits on many boards and has even been written about quite a few times (check out Chip Conley's latest book, Wisdom @ Work for more about her abilities to be an executive whisperer and EQ guide). A veteran editor, curator, content strategist and connector of people and ideas, Karen is super-passionate about all forms of communication. She really has done it all from writing one of the very first consumer books about the Web (in 1995!) to working in content strategy for Sapient. With that, she is best known for being an integral part of Google's communications and public affairs, before moving on to become the Editorial Director at Twitter. Now, she is out on her own and has published her latest book, Taking the Work Out of Networking - An Introvert's Guide to Making Connections That Count. It's an excellent read for those who want to think differently about making connections that really count, and add value in their life by building out a strong community. Enjoy the conversation...

    Show notes

Welcome to episode #645 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #645 - Host: Mitch Joel. When I first met Dan Schawbel (many years back), my reaction was, "who is this kid trying to make such a loud noise?" The passion was oozing out of him. Dan had a real fire in his belly. What a wild and successful ride he has been on. He is the bestselling author of Promote Yourself and Me 2.0. He's a Partner and Research Director at Future Workplace, and the Founder of both Millennial Branding and WorkplaceTrends.com. Through his companies, he's conducted dozens of research studies on the workplace, along with some of the world's biggest brands. He's also interviewed over 2000 of the most successful people in the world including Warren Buffett, Anthony Bourdain, Jessica Alba, Sheryl Sandberg, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. SPOS #644 - Thinking Bigger With Stuart Crainer Nov 11, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #644 of Six Pixels of Separation.

I'm a big fan of the Thinkers50. It's a list of smart people who are (and have) made a significant difference in how we think about business and the work that we do today. Many of the past guests on Six Pixels of Separation are on the list. Dan Pontefract was kind enough to introduce me to one of the Thinkers50 co-founders, Stuart Crainer. Stuart is the former editor of London Business School's award-winning magazine Business Strategy Review. His book credits include The Management Century and a biography of the management guru Tom Peters (Tom is a personal favourite "thinker" of mine!). He has taught in the International MBA at IE Business School and in executive education programs around the world, including the Strategic Leadership programme at Oxford University. Stuart is a Visiting Professor at Warwick Business School. He is also the author of Atlantic Crossing, based on his experiences sailing the Atlantic. So, who are some of the best thinkers of the day? What are they working on? What are some of the bigger trends in business today? Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #643 - Emotional Agility With Susan David Nov 04, 2018
    Show notes

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #643 - Host: Mitch Joel. I'm just a superfan nerd for all things Susan David. I thought that her 2016 book, Emotional Agility, was one of the smartest (and most relevant) books for individuals and leaders. I had the pleasure of connecting with Susan and becoming friends in the past short while. If you didn't know, Susan is an award-winning Psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, co-founder and co-director of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital, and CEO of Evidence Based Psychology. Emotional Agility is a concept that Harvard Business Review heralded as a Management Idea of the Year (no joke), and has been featured... well... everywhere! An in-demand speaker, advisor, and coach, Susan has worked with the senior leadership of hundreds of major organizations, including the United Nations, Ernst & Young, and the World Economic Forum. Susan is also on the core faculty of the global program Homeward Bound, which culminates in an all-women expedition to Antarctica and is being filmed as a documentary. The program aims at increasing the influence and impact of women in the sciences. You should also check out her TED Talk, The gift and power of emotional courage (close to four million views!). I'm thrilled that she agreed to do this. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #647 - Break The Wheel With Jay Acunzo Nov 04, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #647 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #647 - Host: Mitch Joel. Jay Acunzo is the author of the book, Break the Wheel - Question Best Practices, Hone Your Intuition, and Do Your Best Work. He's also a show host and executive producer, as well as the founder of Unthinkable Media, which creates documentary shows with brand clients. In his past life, he was a digital media strategist at Google, then held multiple roles at tech startups like HubSpot. He also served as Vice President of Brand at the venture capital firm, NextView. In a world where "storyteller" has become a buzzword, Jay really understands how to tell stories - emotional tales of people and teams doing their best work. It's all about helping to inspire others to push past conventional thinking. With his new book, he wants to break the "best practices" model and get everybody into a new frame of mind. SPOS #642 - Shift Ahead With Allen Adamson Oct 28, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #642 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #642 - Host: Mitch Joel. Chalk this conversation up to the well-worn thought: "how is is that we had never connected before?" I have been a fan of Allen Adamson's work. His books, BrandSimple and BrandDigital were awesome (I still have not read The Edge - 50 Tips from Brands That Lead). Allen is a respected branding expert. He has worked with a broad spectrum of consumer and corporate businesses across a myriad of industries. He is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Metaforce, a marketing and product consultancy. How organizations do – or do not - stay relevant is the subject of Allen's most recent book, Shift Ahead (co-authored with Joel Steckel). Using first-hand accounts and case studies, Shift Ahead explains how the best organizations recognize when it's time to change direction, and how they pull it off while building their brands. So, let's figure this shift out! Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #641 - Planet Funny With Ken Jennings Oct 21, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #641 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #641 - Host: Mitch Joel. I'm a moron. I did not put two and two together. My buddy, Scott Stratten, let me know that a new book called, Planet Funny, had recently been published. I'm all-in on any non-fiction book that can bridge comedy, culture and things like that. Too many business professionals discount the value and merits of comedy in business, and how massive of a communications skill that comedy is (in short: study comedy if you want to get better at positioning, storytelling, communications skills, etc…). Plus, let's face it, funny equals happy… and we can never have enough of that! The author of the book, Planet Funny, has written over a dozen other books like (Brainiac, Maphead, Because I Said So! and many more). He also happens to be the winningest contestant ever on the age show Jeopardy! (And even lost to IBM Watson's artificial intelligence). That's Ken Jennings. So, yes, we discuss the impact of what he calls "peak comedy," but we also chat about his appearance on Jeopardy! and many other topics (as you can imagine, Ken is smaaaart). So, does your business need more funny? Yes… yes it does… and there's never been a better time to make that happen than right now. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #640 - The Current (And Future) State of Social Media With Ryan Holmes Oct 14, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #640 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #640 - Host: Mitch Joel. About ten years ago, an agency competitor reached out to me about a new product that they were launching to help individuals (and brands) better manage their social media and listening skills. The platform was Hootsuite. The entrepreneur was Ryan Holmes. For over a decade, Ryan has been the founder and CEO, and has helped grow Hootsuite into the world's most widely used social relationship platform, with 16-million-plus users, including more than 800 of the Fortune 1000 companies. Ryan is an active investor and advisor, whose Maple Syrup Mafia syndicate is dedicated to accelerating Canadian startups. A future enthusiast (with a love of VR) and the inventor of a low-cost standing desk, he's a hacker at heart - always looking for easier, better and more efficient ways to solve problems. Ryan is the author of the bestselling guide to social media for leaders, The $4 Billion Tweet. He shares his insights in Forbes, Fast Company and Inc. and ranks as a global influencer on LinkedIn and Facebook. Where's the state of social media at? Let's find out. Enjoy the conversation...
