SPOS #775 - George Dyson On Nature, Human Beings And Machines May 16, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #775 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #775 - Host: Mitch Joel. Here is one of the more fascinating humans that you can connect with. George Dyson fancies himself as someone who makes boats, but he is also a technologist, historian, and one of the true polymaths in our world today. Dyson is the son of the theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson and mathematician Verena Huber-Dyson, the brother of technology analyst Esther Dyson, and the grandson of the British composer Sir George Dyson. Dyson's early life is described in Kenneth Brower's book The Starship and the Canoe. When he was sixteen he went to live in British Columbia to pursue his interest in kayaking. From 1972 to 1975, he lived in a treehouse that he built from salvaged materials on the shore of Burrard Inlet. Dyson became a Canadian citizen and spent 20 years in British Columbia, designing kayaks, researching historic voyages and native peoples, and exploring the Inside Passage. He nows lives in Washington state where he makes kayaks and writes about history, science and technology. His books are Baidarka, Project Orion, Turing's Cathedral, and his latest: Analogia - The Entangled Destinies of Nature, Human Beings and Machines. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #772 - Luvvie Ajayi Jones On Being A Professional Troublemaker Apr 25, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #772 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #772 - Host: Mitch Joel. I was really excited about the opportunity to spend some time with Luvvie Ajayi Jones. She is an author, podcast host, speaker, and someone who has been blogging just a little bit longer than me (there are not many of us left). Luvvie thrives at the intersection of comedy, media, and justice. Her debut book, I'm Judging You - The Do-Better Manual, was released to critical acclaim, and her new book, Professional Troublemaker - The Fear-Fighter Manual is another bestseller. It's hard to fathom, but Luvvie has been blogging for 18 years and covers all things culture with a critical yet humorous lens. That same razor-sharp voice spurred her wildly popular TED Talk, Get Comfortable with being uncomfortable, to almost six million views. Luvvie also connects with her audience through her social network, LuvvNation, where she is the go-to source for elevated conversations about all things buzzworthy and doing better at life. It serves as a safe space in a dumpster fire world, and has over 15,000 members. She has received numerous accolades including being chosen by Oprah Winfrey as part of her inaugural SuperSoul100 list as someone who "elevates humanity." She hosts a podcast called, Professional Troublemaker, where she has conversations with incredible people who have committed to living life loudly, with courage and conviction. Enjoy the conversation....

SPOS #771 - Martin Lindstrom Wants To End Bureaucracy Apr 18, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #771 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #771 - Host: Mitch Joel. When I first started getting interested in being a professional marketer, the work of Martin Lindstrom was always front and center... and for a good reason. Martin Lindstrom one of the world's leading brand and culture transformation experts. Time Magazine called him one of the "World's 100 Most Influential People." He's also been on the Thinkers50 list for more than few years. Martin continues to be an in-demand public speaker, and has authored seven bestselling books that have been translated into 60 languages (if you have not checked out Brand Sense, Buy-ology, Small Data, and his latest, The Ministry of Common Sense, you definitely should). Martin is still a marketing expert, but has been expanding his thought leadership into the truism that business needs much more common sense, a lot less bureaucracy, red tape, and corporate mumbo jumbo. His work is both thoughtful and humorous. And, after reading his latest, you will be constantly asking yourself, "what happened to common sense?" Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #770 - Charlene Walters On Launching Your Inner Entrepreneur Apr 11, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #770 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #770 - Host: Mitch Joel. Women and people of color are underfunded and under-index when it comes to entrepreneurship. There are both systemic and societal reasons for this (none of them are fair or reasonable). This needs to change. Charlene Walters is here to help. Charlene is an entrepreneurship coach, branding mentor, author and speaker. She developed a Digital Entrepreneurship MBA program, serves as a mentor to many, and is constantly fighting hard to get more diverse voices to start their own business. Her new book is titled, Launch Your Inner Entrepreneur - 10 Mindset Shifts for Women to Take Action, Unleash Creativity, and Achieve Financial Success. The truth is that the book's content is valuable for all of us. According to Charlene, "36% of all small business or franchise owners are women, and there are 13 million female-owned businesses contributing to more than $1.8 trillion in revenue. Now, with a fast-changing economy making traditional employment unsteady, there' s never been a better time for becoming a fempreneur." There's also never been a better time to support fempreneurs, and create a more equitable marketplace for all of us. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #769 - James Suzman On A Brief History Of Why We Work Apr 04, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #769 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #769 - Host: Mitch Joel. These past few years have seen many fascinating books in the non-fiction and business book genre. Look no further than the archive of podcasts and conversations that have taken place right here. With that, James Suzman's latest book, Work - A Deep History, from the Stone Age to the Age of Robots, seems to be the one that has me most excited (and the one I tend to recommend when asked). What Yuval Noah Harari did to explain humanity with Sapiens, James has done the same with work. It's a book that still rolls around in my mind like a marble (and it will keep you thinking too). James is an anthropologist who first wrote the book, Affluence Without Abundance - The disappearing world of the Bushmen in 2017. James was the first social anthropologist to work in Namibia's eastern Omaheke among "Southern Ju/'hoansi", where he exposed the brutal marginalisation of San people who had lost their lands to white cattle ranchers and pastoralist Herero people. James has worked tirelessly to help the communities in Namibia. In 2007, Suzman joined De Beers, where, as global head of public affairs, he developed the company's award-winning sustainability functions. In 2013 Suzman and Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales teamed up with Lily Cole to launch Impossible.com at the Cambridge Union. As we all ponder the future of work, let's dig deep into how we work and why we work. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #768 - Victoria Labalme On Risking Forward Mar 28, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #768 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #768 - Host: Mitch Joel. My friend and fellow speaker, Victoria Labalme, is a performing artist, performance coach, documentarian (her film, Muppet Guys Talking, is amazing), and author. She's performed for over two decades in film, TV, Broadway and comedy clubs. From there, she realized that helping people awaken their hidden genius and perform at their highest levels was her jam. Melding her skills gathered from the stage and comedy, she's help many distinguish their brand and find competitive advantage by blending art and business. She is in the Speaker Hall of Fame, creator of the Rock The Room program, and most recently published a small (but powerful) book titled, Risk Forward - Embrace The Unknown And Unlock Your Hidden Genius. In short, if you're not one of the few people in life who know exactly what they want to achieve, then this book is for you. Enjoy the conversation...
