It’s Sex Positive September, and in celebration, we're diving back into our catalog to when Dr. Lexx Brown-James joined us to discuss Black women’s sexuality agency and pleasure. When this episode was initially released, Cardi B & Meg the Stallion had just dropped WAP and the single set the internet on fire. In a new timely release, Meg and Cardi are back with another hit, "Bongos,” a sex-positive anthem perfect for celebrating Sex Positive September. In this episode, Dr. Lexx and I tackled the stereotypes often associated with Black women's sexuality, shame, respectability politics, and agency's role in sexual liberation. We also explored ways to confront our sexual shame and foster healthier attitudes toward sexuality for the next generation.

Session 324: Mental Health Support For Military Families Sep 13, 2023

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Deciding to enlist in the military is a huge decision, and when you have a family, that choice may come with changing dynamics, tough conversations with children, and anxiety for spouses that are left behind. However, this isn’t a battle you have to fight alone. To shed some light on this experience, and share the resources that are available to military families, I’m joined by United States Navy Veterans Kasey King and Dr. D’andria Jackson, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, respectively.

In our conversation today, we discuss strategies for explaining military deployment to young children, ways for military spouses to practice self-care, and how to help spouses reintegrate into the home after time away.

How many of us can say that we have a friendship that is 5, 10, or even 15 years old? If you thought that was rare, how about being friends for most of your lives? For today’s session, we’re joined by lifelong besties of 26 years Lamaya, Aketa, and Keely. Dubbing themselves AMW for ‘America’s Most Wanted,’ this girl group has navigated moves around the country, the raising of children, and busy careers, all while still making time for sisterhood.

In our session today, you’ll hear the AMW crew talk all about their growth as a friend group from college to adulthood, ways to stay connected when your besties live far apart, and how they’ve managed to maintain their sisterhood in the midst of personal life developments.

    Session 318: Demystifying Menopause, Part I Aug 02, 2023
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Simply uttering the word “menopause” can result in feelings of dread for anyone born with a pair of ovaries. Hot flashes, sleepless nights, and painful sex are some of the many transitions that we associate with getting older and experiencing menopause. But menopause doesn’t have to be the secretive, painful experience that so many of us were raised to view it as, and today’s guest is one of the many Black women working to erase its stigma.

Omisade Burney-Scott is a seventh-generation Black Southern feminist, storyteller, and social justice advocate. She is also the creator and curator of The Black Girls’ Guide to Surviving Menopause. During our conversation, Omisade and I discuss how to navigate the transition into menopause, dealing with feelings of grief as a result of experiencing menopause, and how to start intergenerational conversations around the menopausal experience.
